Well he did not cricize the habit itself, radher the degree of indulgence. Its like there is nothing wrong with a beer on the weekend but I might commwnt if you drink a gallon every day, even tough I also enjoy it from time to time. And I myself am hoarding tobacco even tough I smoke maybe a tin per month. Its not getting any cbeaper or mor available so Im making reserves when I can😁

@@TommyRepulsed You make a good point. He was being a bit excessive with it. It may well have been the primary reason he associated with hobbits. He liked that good herb they had more than the Bree stuff, or the plants found growing wild.
It also sets up the fact that he had dealings with the Shire, setting up what would be the chapter where Frodo and the other 3 Hobbits would have to retake the Shire (a scene cut from the movie, as Saruman originally dies there by his aide's hand and not at his tower)

It's interesting to see how the pipe smoking was so much more frequent in Fellowship, in contrast to the remaining trilogy. I think it signifies how as everything in the story is coming to a point, there is so much fewer times at which the characters can rest. As the minor conflicts arise more frequently, and the major ones draw closer, nobody has time to smoke their pipe. Especially Sam and Frodo, not to mention Aragorn and Gimli, what with all the trekking and running they're all doing.

Or they ran out of pipe weed, which wasn't as common outside the Shire.
In the book they actually got some time to smoke after Isengard was taken, with Pippin giving Gimli a spare pipe while he and Merry catch the three hunters up on what happened to the two Hobbits.

That definitely makes sense. As I've become more aware of pipe smoking and Tolkien's love of it, I think it's a symbol of relaxation and the idea of home. So while it is later throughout the trilogy, it's more heavy as a Shire thing because the Shire represents home and relaxation

Actually I bought a LOTR pipe at Amazon, best pipe I ever smoked and Canada has a lot of good Pipe weed.
@@Videssos1 I saw those pipes because I frequently buy things from Amazon. I would have gotten one or more of those pipes, but I quit smoking in the early 1990's.
There is just a way The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have this welcoming feel about them. A feeling that one can't help but yearn for. Maybe its a feeling for returning to a simpler way of life, or just plain simple living. But its a welcoming feeling, a warm feeling. Like the fullness of a meal.

@@FadedOxide the Hobbit is totally doable. It’s much shorter than the other books and the writing style is different. It’s much more accessible. There are also some phenomenal audio books out there on account of its fame

Yeah, the hobbit life feels like a very quiet and Chilled life, sure you probably still have some Work to do but what is just the most beautifull thing about the Hobbits is that they dont seem to have any ill will against eachother and the whole Community really is like a big friendly family, other than our Modern society where you are always pressured to be someone you arent and all people are far away from eachother and absolute selfish f*cks, the Hobbits way of living just seems to be ideal, sure they have no great luxury and are basicly in the middle ages but life is also easyer.

I completely agree, and I would say it is the best adaptation aswell knowing what to leave and what to cut.

I used to smoke a pipe when I served overseas in the Army. My Old RSM (a Yorkshireman) once told me, "you can always trust a pipe smoker"

@@davidrausch7941 times change my man. When I was a teen, getting a girl to go see a spiderman movie would be pretty difficult, yet on the no way home screening I went to I felt like the majority of viewers were 15YO girls so maybe you'd be surprised about the popularity of fantasy movies as well 😁

Re-reading tolkien as an adult made me take up pipe smoking. I love just sitting on my porch in the winter and just slowing down doing nothing as I just stop for an hour or so and enjoy it.

I don't smoke myself, but Tolkien enjoyed doing so. I'm glad that Peter Jackson didn't play politically correct and purge it from his trilogy. It's a part of the tale and should remain.

I'm glad the Hobbit also has pipesmokimg in it, but as I was making a similar compilation I noticed that Martin Freeman was fake piping (pipe in mouth, never exhales any smoke) so I've seen no point in making the video...
@@nonick969 while I'm no fan of the current political correctness and wokeness, I don't think that was the intention. Remember that in LOTR you have the Aragorn-Arwen romance and it being interracial has no political subtext in my opinion.

Besides, it is ultimately the actor’s choice to actually smoke or not, isn’t it. Perhaps Freeman simply exercised his good right to not actually smoke. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@-----REDACTED----- Excellent actors are willing to sacrifice much more than a few puffs of smoke (worth a walk in london during rushhour) to bring a character to life. Sure it is his right to protect his health but no-one forced him to take the role, nudity, losing-gaining weight, going trough drama amongst other things. While I think Martin Freemans portrail of Bilbo is one of the better parts of the hobbit trilogy, I feel like pipesmoking is a part of the character and should have been present onscreen more then the compulsory first scene. I don´t recall seeing Bilbo with a pipe ever again in the whole trilogy unless it was old Bilbo at the very end, a different actor. I do not disagree with you, I just don´t like the choice they made.

The fellowship trilogy got me through the toughest years of my life.. I can't imagine a world without LoTR.. even to this day whenever I'm down or under the weather I know exactly what I'm gonna watch to help me feel better.

Biblo blows a ring, Gandalfs breaks the ring with the Elven Ship (foreshadow), also in Unfinished Tales Gandalf blew 9 rings enclosed by a greater one, hinting he knew of Sarumans desire to find the ring and or emulate Sauron

January third needs to become a holiday in honor of J.R.R Tolkien's birthday, for inspiring the new generations of tobbaco pipe smokers, he is one of the few keeping the hobby alive

I wonder how much pipe smoking will be in the Amazon series? I think it is supposed to be set in the second age so I don't know if pipe smoking will have been as common. I hope so, it is nice to see, especially since pipe smoking was a big part of Tolkien's writing, he didn't like to write unless he was smoking lol, probably also why many of his characters smoked is because he liked to. Also great job putting all this together!

Bullshit. Hobbits smoke pipeweed likes its going extinct, Getting rid of pipeweed would be getting rid of a very important part of their culture.
No, no pipe weed. Or at least, no smoking. Pipe weed came from Numenor (which existed in second age) and was brought over to Arnor and Gondor, where it was called Sweet Galenas but was only grown for it's look and fragrance. Hobbits were the first to smoke it, but they didn't enter the picture until long after Numenor existed. I'm sure Sweet Galenas will be referenced, but that should be all.

That's the point of Tolkien's writing, after all he is the man who said "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world" Sauron is not important, not really, give it 2 or 3 ages and he will be forgotten, but the joy everyone gets while eating a good meal? Or the one they get when they can enjoy a good pipe? That's something that no amount of ages can destroy

to be honest, it was not my idea to use it as a transition, I saw it in the lutr of teh rings parodies. If I were to do it again I´d probably rethink some ot fhe edits because based on other comments, some potheads misinterpret the intentions and I completely didn´t see that coming :D honestly this video is doing way better then I expected.

There's a small nice detail of Gimli having a clay or meerschaum pipe, as a dwarf, compared to the hobbits and humans who use wooden pipes. It also seems like hobbits, who are more carefree, are more likely to have churchwardens.
I am not entirely convinced that is is merschaum, could be just a lighter wood or coloured. But if we look for an in world ecplanation, there might be a suitable mineral the dwarves would know and mine. I actually like that thought.

I never noticed until today that Aragorn had a whole bunch of burnt matches on his table in Bree. I also heard that Viggo insisted that Aragorn would have a small utility knife and that the sword's sheath was the logical place to put it, and that became part of his costume. I wouldn't be surprised if Viggo himself suggested the burnt matches on the table as that would be the natural state of a table where Aragorn had been smoking for hours and hours.

You can tell the author was a pipe smoker. But it fits the story line very well. I must admit on a lazy summer evening letting your mind wonder whilst slowly puffing on your favourite pipe is very relaxing with the added benefit of no pesky Orc's to spoil it.
I like the older movies because of the warmth it gives off, the real sets that they build, the beautiful landscapes and the minimum use of greenscreen.
It had a more realistic and serious feel and a heaviness too it.
I know it's been 20, but calling LOTR older movies makes me in turn feel older as well 😂
Anyone who has ever dug in a garden in England has probably found a small clay pipe at one time or another. They were buried all over the place when I was young.

I bought my first pipe in 1957 when I was 16 and went to the cinema to smoke it. Sadly one could not sit in the cinema watching LOTR smoking one's own pipe
Well, at least we still can enjoy it at home, but going to cinema and being able to smoke a pipe or even just riding the train in the summer and smoking in the cabin must have been nice.
Of course lots of people smoked but most smoked cigarettes. Even so there were quite a few pipe men about.@@TommyRepulsed

For all the uninformed folks: they aren't smoking cannabis, but the Middle Earth version of tobacco.
This is pointless, I've argued with potheads in the past about this topic but they will just ignore every argument you give them. If they want Gandalf to smoke ganja, that is what they'll think no matter what.
I've actually deleted the most deadend argument I had here because when everything else failed the guy started calling me names...
Obviously if Tolkien said it’s tobacco it’s tobacco… but the acting at the very least implies that their “tobacco” is making them giggly and hungry. Maybe the actors were not aware they were supposed to be smoking tobacco? it’s a legitimate observation by those who are informed on the effects of smoking cannabis. The acting clearly implies cannabis effects even if the material is canonically tobacco.
Or maybe middle earth tobacco is more of a blend.

If I ever was to take up smoking (which I probably never will, I like my lungs) I'd definitely go with pipe smoking. It's just so much more refined looking in my eyes than a cigarette, plus you can get all the interesting flavours
I won't pretend pipesmoking is healthy or anything, but since you mention lungs specifically, are you avare that pipesmoke is not meant to be inhaled? (neither does cigarsmoke), you can do whatever you like, some surely inhale it, but usually it is just puffed.
MacQueen pipes makes some neat LOTR inspired pipes. I prefer cigars but these movies make me tempted to switch. Lol.
