I’d like to elaborate: Nagatanien is the name of the Food company that you spoke of. In fact, Nintendo had a partnership with that company for promotional stuff with it’s own brand of food (Mario Curry, Mario Ramen, and Mario Furikake). The two modes in Kattekita Mario Bros. Are “Original Mode” and “Nagatanien World”; Nagatanien World is what you must play on to get the prizes after taking a photoshoot of your victory. Nagatanien World also gives you a second chance at playing more of the game, hence the Slot Machine. This game introduced collecting coins, it introduced hitting blocks by jumping against them, it introduced turtles, pipes, fireballs... A lot of people call Super Mario Bros weird for having a lot of random elements, yet they seem to forget half of it is from this game.

As a side note for the GBA version, if you find the early levels too easy it's because once you get good at them you are supposed to do combos: if you setup multiple enemies and kill them in a row you get way more points and stuff! It's that kind of mechanic new players can safely ignore but adds that little something to make great ones plan ahead. If you mess up you set-up the enemies level up, so it's a risk vs reward thing too!
Surprised he didn't mention that, but maybe he didn't know. I always enjoyed trying to line up all of the enemies to finish them off in one full sweep in the early levels. Racked up a lot of points and a couple of extra lives.
After you passed the NES era, I was absolutely ready to leave a cheeky 'you forgot Super Mario Bros 3's battle mode!' comment, but I stuck with it and lo and behold, you didn't forget! Great video, and thorough too!
The GBA version of Mario Bros will always be my childhood. That being included with the Mario Advance games gave me plenty of extra entertainment as a kid. Great production quality, I'm glad I finally found this channel recently!
I haven't gotten to the GBA part yet, but GBA was my childhood as well. I remember either me or my brother got a high score, then like 12+ years later I started playing it, and I beat the high score, and I felt amazing. I was like ''take that nerd!'' haha x)

Trivia: the person responsible for the unreleased C64 version of Mario Bros. is the same person responsible for composing music in the original Gex: Greg “G-Man” Weber. The reason as to why the game didn’t release is simply because of the North American Video Game Crash of 1983; he couldn’t find a publisher. However, because he worked on this game-he finally got his foot in the door! You can check out G-Man’s Blog to read about it (even how Gex was one of those “projects from Hell”).
I love these arcade rerelease ranking videos you do. I think the differences between these releases are really interesting, and not a ton of people on TH-cam cover them to the extent you have. I know you got really into Pac-Man a while ago, would love to see one on that.
Your combinations of Goomba with real footage is immaculate, that deserves its own mention. This is yet another video I will be watching/listening to many times over while I am playing a game or something. :3 The GBA version was such a nice surprise addition to the Mario games on that platform. I played it for hours.
Another nice detail about the GBA version is that you only need one cartridge to play the multiplayer mode. I remember one time my brother, dad and I played it on our GBAs. Like you said about the difficulty, I didn’t find it challenging until the 60s and even then it has continues. All in all it’s a decent time sink and definitely my favorite version of the game.
I just moved out of my parents for the first time and into a new apartment, and one of the first things I did was watch new TH-cam videos from my fav channels on the big ass TV downstairs. Like this and the new RebelTaxi, I felt right at home

I wonder if the reason the original nes game flickered so badly is the way they did the floors. They move, and it was super early so the moving background tricks weren't used it. It's possible they were ALL sprites which would massive chug the console.

I usually hate these "stick a cartoon on the screen and pretend it's the one talking" videos, but you actually ANIMATED the mouth, which makes it so much more convincing. The GBA version of Mario Bros was how I was introduced to the arcade classic. Suffice to say, I love that version, despite some of its faults. Revamped controls, boping tunes, and a chaotic multi-player mode makes it one of my favorite GBA remakes.

33:02 I was wondering whether SMB3's version would show up. The thing I always loved about this one was the extra bonus game with the coins coming out of the pipe and the one where you kick the ?-blocks away. I have an NES cartridge of Mario Bros. lying around somewhere. My cousin used to play it a lot. But at the top of my head I don't know if it's the original version or the EU one since I'm European. Should check on that some time.
It sucks for me that ZX spectrum version was my first ever mario bros game, back then I didn't know better but I enjoyed it. I wouldn’t have even known that an unreleased remaster of Mario Bros was better than the official release if it wasn’t for this, if I can point out, insanely high quality and well made video. Timing's insane; I just started playing Mario Bros. GBA a few days ago, and played the original arcade cabinet at a classic arcade bar last November with all original hardware, and display, and I got to say they are both just as good for their own reasons! Nice upload!!
The slipices in the 2600 version can be taken out while they’re freezing platforms. This actually awards you with more points than just hitting them from below.
I never played the arcade version until the "anyway you can era" and the learning curve over how differently it controls than most other versions is intense. I can never seem to get the hang of it, because the NES version was always on my mind. I did also play the Atari 2600 one quite a bit, having the hand me down system and all. And I get the feeling they could very well do standard roundish coin shapes, but whoever programmed it wanted to be fancy and do a color layering thing on the "wafers." They were supposedly just dealing with a lot of pushing the system graphically near the end, and they at least had some decent effects. Just...wafers? Like those weird cookies with the frosting in between flavorless, styrofoam-y crisps that are always stale even out of the package you only eat if there's no other cookie in the house? They better had be the expensive European kind that actually taste good.
I always thought of the "wafers" in the 2600 port as credit cards. I suppose they could also be wafers of silver, although what wafers of silver would be doing in the sewers of New York in the 1980s is beyond me.
The Atari "wafers" or coins are there because of the sprite limitations. The Atari has an extra feature (often called the ball) that is being used for the coins to avoid using a sprite, but it can only be square, as it is a repeated line.
Never even knew half of these versions existed until now! I wonder why Nintendo keeps these under wraps when were subjected to the NES version... although the GBA one goes pretty hard. Also 32:47 THERE I AM GARY!

Fun Fact: Kaettekita Mario Bros (or The Return of Mario Bros) was made in collaboration with Nintendo and Nagatanien (a japanese food company that is the sponsor of this game). It was part game part contest where (according to the koopa) After reaching 100,000 points, players are given promotional codes that can be mailed in to a raffle for a pack of Super Mario Bros. 3-themed playing cards. At 200,000 points, players are given another code for entry in a drawing for a Super Mario Bros. 3 cartridge, which released one month earlier in Japan on the Family Computer. All players who sent in codes also had a chance to win a Super Mario Bros. 3 keychain. This promotion was active from November 30, 1988 to May 31, 1989. Also the slot machine would give you a second chance like two matches give you 1 life, three give you 2 lives and getting Nagatanien (永谷園) gives you 4 extra lives.
Interesting to see how these Mario Bros games have influenced the rest of the series! There's an interesting lack of the crabs and flies in later games though. Wonder where those went...
Most of Mario Bros’ enemies have been relegated to the spin-offs. You sometimes see Freezies and Sidesteppers in Mario Kart, Mario Party and Mario Golf (the crabs even made it to The Origami King). The Fighter Fly faded into obscurity. It’s last major appearance was Superstar Saga, though an unused model suggests that it would’ve returned for Mario Power Tennis.
I adore these videos! It is so cool to see some of the classic early 80's arcade games and how they were ported in so many weird ways for the hardware at the time. Great stuff!!!!

Thank you for reminding me of those amazing playing sessions with my Mom when I was like 9 or 10, we'd play the VS. Mode in the Super Mario Bros. All Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3 for hours, she got really good and it was a challenge to beat her. I never imagined there were that many versions of the game, I thought they way less than the Donkey Kong versions of the other video.

I’m probably the only Freezie fan in the world, but there’s just something pleasant about them. They don’t appear much but it’s always nice when they do. Fighter Fly is also quite good but they seemingly quit the series after being cut from Mario Power Tennis.

What I like about ports is that every one of them have a unique style and limitation.

You really are doing great! Good narrative voice, amusing humor, great designs, and a pet-peeve of mine that you overcame: You made a nice final results presentation! I usually hate these "stick a cartoon on the screen and pretend it's the one talking" videos, but you actually ANIMATED the mouth, which makes it so much more convincing. God, I hate when they're just still images wiggling around.

The GBA version of Mario Bros was how I was introduced to the arcade classic. Suffice to say, I love that version, despite some of its faults. Revamped controls, boping tunes, and a chaotic multi-player mode makes it one of my favorite GBA remakes.
The L.G. sure works hard to entertain us. Why hasn’t Bowser given him a raise yet?

I have an NES cartridge of Mario Bros. lying around somewhere. My cousin used to play it a lot. But at the top of my head I don't know if it's the original version or the EU one since I'm European. Should check on that some time.
It sucks for me that ZX spectrum version was my first ever mario bros game, back then I didn't know better but I enjoyed it. No I'm not joking I actually liked this when I first played it lol

Timing's insane; I just started playing Mario Bros. GBA a few days ago, and played the original arcade cabinet at a classic arcade bar last November with all original hardware, and display, and I got to say they are both just as good for their own reasons! Nice upload!!
The slipices in the 2600 version can be taken out while they’re freezing platforms. This actually awards you with more points than just hitting them from below.
I never played the arcade version until the "anyway you can era" and the learning curve over how differently it controls than most other versions is intense. I can never seem to get the hang of it, because the NES version was always on my mind. I did also play the Atari 2600 one quite a bit, having the hand me down system and all. And I get the feeling they could very well do standard roundish coin shapes, but whoever programmed it wanted to be fancy and do a color layering thing on the "wafers." They were supposedly just dealing with a lot of pushing the system graphically near the end, and they at least had some decent effects. Just...wafers? Like those weird cookies with the frosting in between flavorless, styrofoam-y crisps that are always stale even out of the package you only eat if there's no other cookie in the house? They better had be the expensive European kind that actually taste good.
I always thought of the "wafers" in the 2600 port as credit cards. I suppose they could also be wafers of silver, although what wafers of silver would be doing in the sewers of New York in the 1980s is beyond me.
Thanks to you, Goomba, I am feeling inspired to buy the Arcade Archives version of Mario Bros. Seems kinda cool!

These kind of videos are an interesting piece of videogame history that isn't normally talked about. Really good stuff!
The Atari "wafers" or coins are there because of the sprite limitations. The Atari has an extra feature (often called the ball) that is being used for the coins to avoid using a sprite, but it can only be square, as it is a repeated line.
Never even knew half of these versions existed until now! I wonder why Nintendo keeps these under wraps when were subjected to the NES version... although the GBA one goes pretty hard.

Fun Fact: Kaettekita Mario Bros (or The Return of Mario Bros) was made in collaboration with Nintendo and Nagatanien (a japanese food company that is the sponsor of this game). It was part game part contest where (according to the koopa) After reaching 100,000 points, players are given promotional codes that can be mailed in to a raffle for a pack of Super Mario Bros. 3-themed playing cards. At 200,000 points, players are given another code for entry in a drawing for a Super Mario Bros. 3 cartridge, which released one month earlier in Japan on the Family Computer. All players who sent in codes also had a chance to win a Super Mario Bros. 3 keychain. This promotion was active from November 30, 1988 to May 31, 1989. Also the slot machine would give you a second chance like two matches give you 1 life, three give you 2 lives and getting Nagatanien (永谷園) gives you 4 extra lives.
This has become my favorite subseries of yours.

There's an interesting lack of the crabs and flies in later games though. Wonder where those went...
Most of Mario Bros’ enemies have been relegated to the spin-offs. You sometimes see Freezies and Sidesteppers in Mario Kart, Mario Party and Mario Golf (the crabs even made it to The Origami King). The Fighter Fly faded into obscurity. It’s last major appearance was Superstar Saga, though an unused model suggests that it would’ve returned for Mario Power Tennis.
I adore these videos! It is so cool to see some of the classic early 80's arcade games and how they were ported in so many weird ways for the hardware at the time. Great stuff!!!!

Thank you for reminding me of those amazing playing sessions with my Mom when I was like 9 or 10, we'd play the VS. Mode in the Super Mario Bros. All Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3 for hours, she got really good and it was a challenge to beat her.
I never imagined there were that many versions of the game, I thought they way less than the Donkey Kong versions of the other video.

Since it wasn't said for the last version for those who may not know and wondering where to find it. Luigi bros was added to Super mario 3d world during the year of luigi and was unlocked once you completed the game. It is even in the Nintendo Switch port in Super mario 3d world + bowsers fury
