Great video, really enjoyed that. I actually think Mario Bros might just be my favourite game ever. I loved it myself as a teenager nearly 40 years ago (both in my local arcade and on my C64) but in recent years it became the game of choice for me and my daughter, who is now 13. We've been playing it for years together since she was about 5 and it's still now the first game we go to if we visit a retro arcade as there's nothing like playing on an original cab. There's something about the two player mechanics that mean it's the arcade game that makes us both laugh the most - getting in each other's way, bouncing the other playing into enemies accidentally etc., it's just a really silly and fun game.
Thank you. You are right, it is just silly fun especially in two player mode. Always trying to make it to the next screen and rooting your teammate on as well

My local corner convenience store had the cabinet and I'd always play it. I loved it cause the sound was turned up, and the cabinet had great speakers (great sounding bass, etc). Just an FYI, I believe when you were showing your MAME footage, you're missing some sound samples. There's a sound sample file you can grab which adds them back in (particularly the sound when Mario/Luigi's moving/running, etc). The sound adds a lot to the experience of the game. I love the GBA version as well, and it's great to play on the Wii U Virtual Console (on the TV!). Probably one of my favorite versions, only wish I could play local coop on the same screen (the original GBA supported link up cable via 2 GBAs for multiplayer). It's great that the Switch has an Arcade Archives version, and the Virtual Console (NES) version for the 3DS is awesome cause you can game share AND then play local coop with 2 3DSes over local wireless. Wish the Switch version did the same!
Thank you. I wasn't aware I was missing any samples, I will have to fix that. Now that you mention it though, I do recall this game was first emulated in Mame 25 years ago that we didn't need to download the samples for the sound to work properly LOL completely forgot about that. 3 notable differences in the gba version are replacing the shell creepers with spinys, the ability to run faster by holding the B button while walking, & the ability to super jump like in Super Mario Bros. 2

I still play this! Quarters in Salt Lake City has it, and I took the first place spot on the top scores. I also had the Atari 2600 version, I found the NES cartridge, and I have the Arcade Archives version on my Switch.
I played Mario Bros. at a Mazzio's Pizza back in the mid 80's through the early 90's. It sat right next to Data East's Shoot Out. I bought the Atari 2600 version at our local Venture Store (same place I got Solaris, Millipede, and Kangaroo). Funny thing though is that other than Mazzio's there really was not any other place that had the arcade even at the main arcades throughout the years in my hometown.
I used to love going to venture and that's a store I have not thought about in 25 years. This was in a lot of our arcades and bowling alleys growing up
I guess I shouldn’t be too shocked that you overlooked Dave Sharpless’ “Mario Bros. VGA” for DOS. It’s an unofficial port, but I grew up on it, and it’s honestly pretty good. You should absolutely check it out sometime.
This has to be one of my all-time favorites. I often wonder why Nintendo has not come out with their own line of arcade cabinets like Arcade1up or iircade which i think would be awesome if they would start to market these classic games. Let's face it these games are over 30 years old and would be big sellers in the home arcade cabinet market. Imagine all of Nintendo's games lines that could be produced.
yea virtual boy, I think I have a total of 50 bucks invested in mine including all the official games from Electronics Boutique and KB Toys, still works like a champ ... cause you can only play it for so long before going crosseyed and having a seizure, quick glance on ebay looks like I could pay off the rest of my car ... but its only a year away so ill keep it until my children throw it in the dumpster when I am dead
From what I understand, only the North American home console market was actually destroyed by the crash, the North American and European home computer and arcade game markets were only weakened temporarily, and in Japan nothing happened at all.
Had this for the Apple 2 back in the day and thought it was the best arcade conversion I had for the system. But I really started to play in the GBA era when it seemingly came as a bonus in half the cartridges Nintendo put out.
It's sad that the original Mario Bros arcade game only got remade (that I know of) in the GBA remakes of the Mario games. It's still a fun game to play even today.
There's actually a pseudo-remake in the NES Super Mario Bros 3. If you're playing with a 2nd player and access the starting point of a world map, you access a secret mode where the two players fight each other in the arcade game Mario Bros.

If only it supported local coop, it'd be perfect [the original supported the link up cable for multi-player which sadly isn't supported here, same screen multiplayer, etc])
The 1st time I saw this cabinet in the lobby of a department store the attract mode had me fixated so much my family wandered away and I didn't notice. I remember freaking out and crying. Instead of going to find them I turned back around and continued to watch Mario Brothers whilst bawling.
My older brother and I would love to play this together on the NES and, when we got the '83 version, on the C64. We would decide before a game if we were working together or as enemies and sabotage each other. We never changed our minds halfway through the game, but accidents did happen. It was always fun, regardless of how we played it.
Back when I was just a little kid getting my feet wet with video games, I had the Atari 7800 version. My mom actually pushed me to become comfortable with technology in general. Eventually, she even stopped playing video games against me because she knew I surpassed her ages ago... but sometimes, if one of us finds a Galaga cabinet, I might be lucky enough to get her to try again.
Played this game many times on many systems, including the Apple II version in elementary school. I still love the NES version; my wife got it for me for Christmas a couple of years ago and I played it for hours. The execution varied across the different ports but the core gameplay concept is so simple, basic, intuitive, and fun.
The original Terminator movie came out in October 1984, The Search for Spock came out in June of 1984, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was released in May of 1984, and The Neverending Story released in July of 1984. Only Return of the Jedi and Superman 3 were released in 1983.
I had Mario Bros for my hand-me-down Atari 2600, my friend had the NES one. Even as a little kid, I always thought the "wafers" were a weird touch. Certainly they could have just made a squared off gold shape and called it a coin, but I think the programmers just wanted to play around with some color function. And small correction, the last name "Mario" actually premiered back on the live action segment of an episode of Super Mario Bros Super Show. Luigi got a certificate to get one free dance lesson from Shabbadoo (!) and "Luigi Mario" was on the certificate. I'm sure they used that Mario last name in another episode, but I can't remember quite off the top of my head where.
The love I have for the Mario brothers. Feels like yesterday o saw this in the arcade at the old Pizza Wheel and my dad and I had tons of fun playing it.
I love your updated review of Mario Bros. My favorite arcade classic. Thanks for your videos! One thing that I noticed when you showed the NES gameplay is that the sprites look closer to the original arcade version than the NES version I played on my Switch. Though you showed two NES versions, neither looked very similar to the NES version I played. Weird.

Oh man! I remember that commercial! Gee, thanks for putting that back in my head Patman lol! Now, I'm going around singing "Mario, where are you?" like I did when I first seen it. Nobody paid any attention when I sang it as a kid, but now, my friends are like what in the hell is wrong with you?🤪🤣 Great vid as always my man! Bringing back the good old nostalgia of simpler and funner days! Edit: The turtles, when they get hit, on the Spectrum port look like they're having a Grand Mal seizure, and the ones on the Amstrad look like they're whacking off! 🤣
16:21 Something’s gumming up the plumbing, poor Luigi’s in a bind, giant turtles out to get him, creepy crabs are right behind, fighter flies, jeepers, yipes, they’re all coming up the pipes! “Maaaaaaaario, where are you?”
@@bleirdo_dude Back in the 90's my local arcade sometimes had the old Atari Star Wars vector graphics game on free play. I loved that game. It was the only game they ever had on free play.
The pow block was an item u can hit in the unlockable super mario bros 1 stage in Super Smash Bros for N64. It later became an item in mario kart Wii & super smash bros for 3ds & WiiU. The slip ice was renamed to Freezie & was also an item in super smash bros melee & onwards. It was also a hazard in a stage in mario kart double dash
The first version I played was on the Atari 7800 and I was impressed with the graphics being very close to the NES. Then I owned and played the NES version. I sadly never got the opportunity to play this on a arcade cabinet but I would absolutely would have loved to play the arcade version.
It seems like you doubled the cultural reference jokes in this video, and I, for one, approve, especially the Kris Kross joke. 😅 Mario Bros. Is quite the fun game.
If you could include homebrew you could include the Colecovision Homebrew Mario Bros, very well done version almost arcade perfect,it even has the intro music and level tutorials. The only kind of weaknes in it is the enemies are single color,I guess due to the limitations of the system.
I loved it at the arcade, but never found a home game to play (I saw a mini-game in one of the Super Marios, but it wasn't the full game). The Atari 2600 looked bad. I've read comments by people saying they never went to the arcade as a kid, so I guess they didn't know any better when they loved playing games ports or conversions at home! They should have done an ad-campaign for the 5200 or ColecoVision saying, give the 2600 to your annoying little brother, here's the system for you!
Enjoyed Mario Bros in arcade and on 2600. 2600 version let you step on slipice as melting and dispose of him instead of punching from below. Seeing it now, it has not aged well. Lol. Like just, it is a fun co-op AND a "try to off" the other player game.
pat this may be off the beaten path but i think i may had come across a home/hobby brew for radio shack community tandy back in 1987/1988 never found more about it since i saw it only once

Weird.
Not sure, I'm sure I use the proper ROM but maybe not
I Love Nintendo and most importantly Mario Bros and the Arcade Too Anyway You Did a Amazing Job to Go Back and do a Remake of This Video of the History of Mario Bros Good Job PatmanQC Applause!! Applause!! 👏👏
16:21 Mama Mia!! That's One Wacky Commercials of Mario Bros for Atari Game's
I Love Manga and Anime and Ever Mangaka or Manga Book's But What's That Manga Book Page Come From Anyway? 5:07
I Also Love Symphony and Opera Music Like This One Here From Musician Instruments Symphony By Mozart 9:44 9:51 9:58
LOL, good call
23:00 "No, Sir. I didnt like it"
Blajajaja. The horse on the old Ren And Stimpy show
Excellent, I'm glad somebody got that joke :-)
16:21
Something’s gumming up the plumbing,
poor Luigi’s in a bind,
giant turtles out to get him,
creepy crabs are right behind,
fighter flies,
jeepers,
yipes,
they’re all coming up the pipes!
“Maaaaaaaario, where are you?”
One of the greatest commercials ever :-)
When talking about the Original NES Version, you showed footage of the PAL Only Classic Series version instead. Other than that, great video.
I hope you and you family are feeling better, Pat.
The family is better for the most part but I'm still recuperating, thanks for asking
Challenging, and with high replay value. Great old-school game.
Holy 🐄!
You encountered a game that took nickels? 😋
You bet! It only lasted a few weeks until the emptied machine out in all these nickels came pouring out :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries 😅
@@bleirdo_dude Back in the 90's my local arcade sometimes had the old Atari Star Wars vector graphics game on free play. I loved that game. It was the only game they ever had on free play.
@@58jharris Cool game, and arcade.
One 80's arcade gave a free play for a Wendy's meal purchase receipt (same owners).
Always loved this arcade game, definitely spent more time with the NES port, though. Still play it all the time.
It's a lot of fun
This was one of those ones where it wasn't nearly as fun without a second person.
Everything is usually better with two players that I found this one still enjoyable by myself
I like Matt Pat's gaming theory that Jumpman is actually Mario and Luigi father.
Glad you are on the mend!
The graphics are very good for an arcade game
I agree especially for an early 1980s game
I love that the Switch has exclusive Nintendo Arcade Archives.
Awesome thanks Pacmanqc great work
Glad you enjoyed it, Thanks
This is without a doubt a classic!
I agree 100%
Blood Bros.? Bill & Lance? Billy & Jimmy? Blade & Striker? Paul & Vince? Ohh Mario & Luigi... almost had it.
The first version I played was on the Atari 7800 and I was impressed with the graphics being very close to the NES. Then I owned and played the NES version. I sadly never got the opportunity to play this on a arcade cabinet but I would absolutely would have loved to play the arcade version.
It was a pretty good conversion on the NES
Booberiffic!!!!! Now THIS is why I watch PatmanQ!!!
LOL, thanks My friend
Oh man....
Mario bros...
How did he go SO long without doing this video.
But it's finally here 🙌
Hope you enjoyed it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries still enjoying it your videos never fail
Thanks. One my favorite games ever. Despite what you said, I loved my 5200 version best. Also had it on 2600 and C-64.
That's okay, opinions are like butT holes Everyone has been and these are all just my opinion :-)
It seems like you doubled the cultural reference jokes in this video, and I, for one, approve, especially the Kris Kross joke. 😅
Mario Bros. Is quite the fun game.
Thank you, it is a lot of fun especially in multiplayer
This is also on Nintendo Switch Arcade Archives by Hamster.
Thanks
If you could include homebrew you could include the Colecovision Homebrew Mario Bros, very well done version almost arcade perfect,it even has the intro music and level tutorials. The only kind of weaknes in it is the enemies are single color,I guess due to the limitations of the system.
It's really good but I don't usually include homebrew for that simple fact
Great video, Pat. Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!Thank you
1:29 Nice to see one of my fan art I drew many moons ago.😁
Excellent work, glad your name is on ttheir
Your opening alone is like blue fungi for the soul. Hope is all well brother. WC is 2 sweet. 🤘
Thanks brother
I get a kick out of the fact that they cribbed the "Car 54, Where Are You?" theme song for that Atari Mario Brothers commercial.
So did I, it was pretty funny
Wow, I never knew there were icicles in the later stages of the arcade version! Guess I wasn't as good at this game as I thought.
I would like to see a firefly in super Mario GoKart Racing
That would be cool
I discovered Mario Bros. at a local pizzeria back in '86. It was quite the game.
Yes it was
The NES is the winner IMO. Atari 7800 is decent, but suffers from bad sound.
Yes, I would probably agree if it was the pal version with the cut scenes we were talking about
I go for the arcade mame version and no other version. It's hands down one of my favorite arcade classics alongside with donkey kong.
Indeed, it is the best one
Thanks!
How nice of you, thanks a lot!!
Is it just me, or does the Apple 2 version of Luigi look like the Joker?
Nice, I didn't catch that
Enjoyed Mario Bros in arcade and on 2600. 2600 version let you step on slipice as melting and dispose of him instead of punching from below. Seeing it now, it has not aged well. Lol. Like just, it is a fun co-op AND a "try to off" the other player game.
Odd... I was always a Mario Bros. fanatic and this is the first time I recall seeing falling icicles in the game.
Because it only occurred in later stages and most home versions didn't have them
Didnt you make a video of this game already?
The third video I ever made was MarioBrothers and it was about five minutes in length. Clearly I hadn't found my stride yet
pat this may be off the beaten path but i think i may had come across a home/hobby brew for radio shack community tandy back in 1987/1988 never found more about it since i saw it only once
My favorite version is still the Game Boy Advance version because of the smooth control.
Yes, it was really fun
Well, I'll be. A Kriss-Kross reference in 2022. What a time to be alive!
Lol glad you enjoyed it
