I remember playing DK Jr. Math in Animal Crossing for the GameCube and it basically recontextualized the experience for me. As it is within Animal Crossing, it makes the game come off as a fun math distraction from the main gameplay. Hahah! So, in that game it’s given me a decent time and kept me somewhat stimulated.

Honest to god, I’m surprised Donkey Kong Jr never got a Commodore 64 port. That thing sold like hotcakes, being the best selling individual computer ever made, so a DK Jr. port for the C64 would be a no-brainer!

Fun fact: DK JR has a cartoon, as does donkey Kong himself. It was part of a block alongside I think Qbert, Packman, and even Frogger of all things back in the 80s
DR JR was also voiced by Frank Welker aka Fred from Scooby
You're correct with it being paired with Q*Bert and Frogger, but the 80s Pac-Man cartoon was made by Hanna-Barbera while DK Jr, DK, Q*Bert, and Frogger (along side a couple others) were produced by Ruby-Spheres.
Pac-Man also aired about a year before in 1982 with the others being 1983 if I remember.

I've played the NES version and the Game & Watch Gallery versions. I actually enjoy the G&WG versions more because of the quick pace and score attack. Feels less clunky, too.

Regarding Donkey Kong Jr., Diddy Kong's design was originally developed for Donkey Kong Jr. during the creation of Donkey Kong Country. However, Nintendo rejected it due to the societal norms of that era. Rare preserved the design but had to introduce the new Donkey Kong Jr. as a distinct character, leading to the creation of Diddy Kong. Nintendo continues to use Diddy Kong in place of Donkey Kong Jr., not only because he has a more appealing appearance but also because he embodies the intentions they had for the latter's new design.
Atari is just went through an entire character arc with dk jr from spitting second worst version of Dk jr on 2600 a mid 8 bit family computer version TO A SECOND BEST DK JR PORT EVER

When I was young I loved playing Donkey Kong Jr (specifically the 7800 one) more than Donkey Kong I must admit, I also have the Game & Watch one too
I think the problem with walking off ledges can be explained. When people programming a platformer then they put some extra help/cheats to help the player with the game and make it feel less unfair. They code it that when you walk off a ledge you can still jump for a short period of time, that's called "coyote time". I think that might be missing.

You're not kidding about that being a lot of donkey Kong Jr. There's more donkey Kong Jr in this video than any attention that's been given to him by Nintendo and almost 20 years. Awesome video once again!

I played the NES version and Donkey Kong Jr. Math as they were unlockable furniture in Animal Crossing on GameCube, and played the version in Game & Watch Gallery 3.
It's always interesting to see how different some of these ports can actually be. I think this might some of my favorite content of yours.

Are there enough versions of DK3 to do a video? You have Arcade, NES, and e-Reader versions (plus a sequel from Hudson for home computers), but there's no ColecoVision, Amstrad, 2600, 7800, Commodore 64, DOS, Famicom Disk, or Game & Watch versions of DK3.
A better choice might be Popeye, the 1982 arcade game. It has at least 10 distinct contemporary versions due to Parker Bros porting it to everything they could get away with. You could even through in the "reimagined" versions from Namco in 2008 and that eShop monstrosity from 2021.
On the bright side, if Lonely Goomba is willing to expand his criteria beyond Nintendo arcade platformers, there are some great candidates for this series. Games like Pac-Man, Frogger, Galaga, Xevious, and Dig Dug supposedly have 20+ distinct versions.
@@Salnax Actually, there IS a Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong 3 (though it plays NOTHING like the arcade game), plus our host could include Greenhouse if he feels cheeky, since that game marks the debut of Stanley the Bugman.

Incredible breakdown! Believe it or not, there's another officially licensed version you didn't cover that might be worth it's own video. In the 90s and 2000s Nintendo licensed out these little G&W style keychains called Nintendo Mini Classics to a company called Stadlbauer. They looked like tiny Game Boy Pockets and came in a few colors. There were several games including Donkey Kong Junior, Mario's Cement Factory, Parachute, Zelda and Super Mario Bros.

Most of the Mario/Jumpman confusion is due to the Kongs’ weird aging. The Mario featured is meant to be the Mario, as games like Odyssey have implied.

My DK junior cocktail arcade machine that I have was one of the first arcade games I ever bought when I was younger so it holds a special place in my heart! It’s awesome seeing all these different versions of it!!
That was a fantastic video Mr. Goomba, I didn’t know DK Jr. had that many ports. Don’t think Donkey Kong 3 has as many ports as the other two.
Great stuff! I enjoyed the fair approach you provided when reviewing these ports. Around ten years ago, you probably would have given all but the arcade version very low scores.
Donkey Kong Jr. Math was actually one of a trio of educational titles that Nintendo aimed to put out based on their other existing titles, but it ended up being the only one released in the West. Of the other two titles: Popeye English never made it outside of Japan due to the fact that it was for teaching English words to Japanese speakers, and Donkey Kong Music was probably just too ambitious for the Famicom hardware that it never saw release at all (and so we sadly missed out on seeing Donkey Kong, Mario, and Pauline all performing in a band together).
Thank frick I never played the never released BBC Microt that killed the second stage and made the death animation cringe!

Intellivision Limbs flicker because they just took Dk jr's single vine pose and change the side every frame to create the illusion of a new sprite.

This was a fun watch! When I was really little, there was a Donkey Kong Jr. arcade machine at the theater near me that I would play sometimes, so I actually have a lot more memories with DK Jr. than the original Donkey Kong. Other than NES, I never played any of these other versions. It's interesting to see all the differences.

Man, this was a trip! I use to play DK jr on my GBA with my younger brother using the E-Reader and cards on long car rides with the family. DK jr was always in the shadows of the original donkey Kong, but I honestly prefer the second one because it feels more relaxing (imo) whereas the first game is more of a rush to me. Thanks for the memories goomba! 💯

I think you've found a great new niche man, don't really see anyone cover these old ass arcade games and their billion versions! Love watching 'em for the history aspect.
I always have the original Game and Watch version next to me and occasionally I do whip it out to play for a few minutes, and it's gratifying trying to get to the key as fast as you can and racking up as many points as possible.
I also have to say that I'm surprised that an educational game got as high as it did on the list which is honestly pretty cool. It made me wonder if other games of this calibre like Professor Pac-Man might be any good as well.

Donkey Kong Jr. is a game I never got to play, but I need to try it out sometime
For fun, I rewatched the first two videos in this series to see which platforms had the best versions overall. So without further ado, here are the scores Lonely Goomba gave each of the versions, organized by console, in the order of DK/Mario Bros/DK Jr.
1. Arcade (10/10/10) - You got to hand it to the originals.
2. Game & Watch (8/8(?)/10)
3. Atari 7800 AND NES (7/7/10 and 8/7/9) - Funny to see Atari do so well, considering how the 7800 was the NES's biggest non-Sega competition at one point.
5. Atari 8-Bit Computers (7/10/6)
6. ZX Spectrum (6/1/6) - Mario Bros weighs down the ZX Spectrum quite a bit.
7. Atari 2600 (2/5/2) - Considering how Coleco sabotaged these games, this isn't surprising.
Other platforms that have done well in this series (but do not have all 3 games) include the Coleco Adam (8/X/9), the Famicom Disk System (X/8/10), the Famicom Mini series on GBA (8/7/X), and Colecovision (6/X/7).
Betcha 10 to 1 he'll cover Donkey Kong 3 next, EVERY SINGLE VERSION
Next you should do a video comparing every single version of Nintendo's Popeye arcade game! And once you've run out of Nintendo arcade games to play every version of, you could do other arcade games like Asteroids, Centipede, Defender, Dig Dug, Frogger, Galaga, Galaxian, Joust, Miner 2049er (which I know wasn't an arcade game, but I would still be willing to watch a video about it), Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Paperboy, Pole Position, Q*bert, Street Fighter II and its revisions, and Tetris!

If there's this much of DK and DK Jr. I can only imagine how many other versions there are of other games thaf Nintendo made back in the day!
A lot of the reason DK and DK Jr had so many versions was that they were made before Nintendo was heavily invested in making their own hardware. And since Nintendo didn't really have any major hits before DK in 1981, that leaves a fairly small window of games that would've gotten too many distinct versions.
That said, there ARE quite a few distinct versions of Popeye, because of its 1982 release date, and Super Mario Bros, because it was so huge back in the day and has had plenty of love more recently as well.
Games like Donkey Kong 3, Urban Champion, Tennis, and Excitebike also had a number of versions, but much less than the likes of DK, DK Jr, and Mario Bros.
I was thinking you might miss the Game & Watch version but nah you had it too - that's the one I had as a kid. The crocodiles are actually bear trap like things called Snapjaws.
