One thing about Lonely Goomba videos that I love which no one brings up a lot is when he puts his face over stock images. It really adds a lot of charm.
now I've been playing alot of Pizza Tower recently, which takes its main inspiration from this game. And rightfully so, Wario Land 4 is great. I do think its greatest strength is not overstaying its welcome. It's tight pacing is so great that it never once stops being fun. I will agree that a handful of levels more, even just making the Golden Passage a full world instead of one level, would've helped a lot. Regardless, it's a great game. Before I had played it, I thought it would be an ok experience, but this game is truly Wario's greatest achievement, in my eyes. Though, after playing Pizza Tower, I do quite wish that the escape from the Golden Pyramid after the final fight against the golden Diva would've been playable as well. A game like this just lends itself perfectly to culminate in a Metroid-style escape sequence.
Someone made a whole video about the ost. Lots of music and sound effects are chopped up and put back together to save space. Like the "Hu-hu-hu-hurry up" is just one "hurry up" pitch bended and played a few times. And the karaoke song is actually just a few syllables stitched together to make the illusion of a full song
Considering that really bad audio quality is hard-coded into the rendering so it can't be improved by any kind of better speaker, I assume GBA does some magic with sample bitrates. It's not that it's bad, it's like carving art out of the end of a matchstick.
@@MusicMan32K yeah some are defenitly compressed samples lile the bell noise at the begining of hurry up appears to be a super compresed sample of the opening of pink floyd time and i beleive the tension synths during the intro sections are compressred samples of pink floyd on the run albeit edited
There’s also a backwards version of the song, and iirc the GBA has only 2 sample channels and the original gameboy’s stuff (ie. 2 square wave channels, one wavetable synthesiser and a noise generator). So making both the full lyrics and the backwards ones sound passable is a feat
The only other GBA game that has a song with lyrics in it is Klonoa Heroes (Sign of a Hero), except it divides the lyrics in phrases and it has a fully streamed CD quality version of it in the official soundtrack (part of which was used in the game's commercial).
@@Emery_Pallas, it has multiple sample channels that work more similarly to MIDI, but they're mixed into two DAC channels by the CPU (often for stereo sound; so if only one channel is used, it'll be in mono). The original four Game Boy sound channels (2 pulse waves, one waveform/rarely samples, and one noise) re included as well, but like the sample sound they're generated through the CPU. All of the GBA's sound isn't handled by a dedicated sound chip, but by the CPU. This is why the sound is often low quality.
I can no longer think of the Wario Land series without remembering the dream I had where I installed "Wario Land 5: No More Butts +" onto all the computers at college (among other things.)
Dude, I am working on a Wario Land Review Series for two years now and your review for Wario Land 3 even changed my overall opinion of it. You really enrich my youtube-experience!
The bosses on S-Hard basically require performing the speedrun strategies to beat them in time. It really forces you to get good at skipping their waiting phases.
If you want more Wario Land 4 and don't mind emulating, play the romhack *"Wario Land 4: Parallel World".* Pretty much Wario Land 4-2, and it's _not_ kaizo-level difficulty at all. It's great and on par with the original game.
This game is like a perfect balance of Wario Land 1 as well as 2 and 3. it has the traditional platformer gameplay of 1 and the transformations of 2 and 3. That's why I love this game and it's I think the best in the series (haven't played shake it yet and 2 is my favorite not objectively best tho).

I have been waiting so long for this video where you go even further in depth with this classic gem! The original video was great, but no that I have now played the game on Wii U for the first time and loved it for so many different reasons, I needed a new-styled Goomba video about it.
I bought Wario Land 4 with GBA, and it blew my little kid's minds, seeing such graphics on a handheld. No other GBA game after that came close to the standards Wario Land 4 set, and it still is one of my favorites: I thought it was just nostalgia, but I played it recently again, 100%ed it for the first time, and it feels like it was released yesterday. An absolutely timeless gem.
It was awesome of you to revisit this game and make a another review! (remastered review?) Ignoring the CD music, almost all of the level music are bangers. Some of my favorites are: Hall of Hieroglyphs (so funky!) Palm Tree Paradise Monsoon Jungle (goes great with rain, also those guitar 'chirps'!) The Toxic Landfill (at one point in my life, I hadn't played the game anymore for years and then out of nowhere I get this rockin' song in my head) Toy Block Tower (so groovy!) Crescent Moon Village (goes pretty hard in its' second part) Hotel Horror the "Hurry Up" song during the end of a level and of course the intro itself.
The CD music is also great just on a comedic level, you expect to unlock the songs in the levels and instead you get mostly a bunch of experimental ambient noise tracks made with 2 sample channels and a gameboy, with little to nothing to do with the actual game.
Where It all began and the main Inspiration to both Pizza Tower and Anton Blast!!!! I'm a lonely scientist With a brain tumor Guess I'll play this Gameboy For the rest of my short life!
This is my favorite Wario Land game and I've played it so many times I could remember some of the bosses' names after a long time since my last playthrough, but I never checked hard mode, I thought it would be play the game again with less health or the enemies would need two hits to beat them or something, thanks Goomba, now I know there's more Wario Land 4 to play.
I admit, I downloaded Wario Land 4 from the Wii U eShop because of Living with Wario's iconic scene being a meme at the time (and I'm glad you brought that clip up here XD). I was pretty excited to see you review it when I saw that teaser.

Hey, I like the subversion of the pinball stage...Though it's a personal thing. There's just something about classic pinball tables that invoke feelings of childish nostalgia. Like the few times I ever got to go to a play-place or arcade-like place as a young child, I'd always see machines like these around. And a lot of times, I'd be the only one in that section and I'd enjoy the serenity. The best memory is when I was put in a play-place at a beach resort and I'd be in the play area relaxing and looking around while others were playing star wars games (which I wasn't good at) in the main area. The sound of the ocean waves, the beautiful day and the bright colours of the play-place and the toys/machines around me. I don't know, something just felt right about it. And the pinball zone from Wario Land 4 brings that memory back.
WAAAARIO! I adore this game's immaculate bizarre vibes, it's such wonderful inspiration both for spriting AND audio! Game's so dang good that it inadvertently became its own genre of platformer- with Pizza Tower and Anton Blast existing as proof!
I’m really glad you commented on my videos cos it’s now lead me to your channel and I’m loving it. It’s actually something I can enjoy and watch with my kids. Most they stuff they watch gives me an aneurysm.
2:53 I never noticed that, but it's pretty obvious if one were to just look at the background, it's a pretty cute reference to the upcoming Nintendo system too I'd say, considering this game came out in August and the GameCube game out in September both of 2001.
The original review of Wario Land 4 from years ago has a special place in my heart nostalgia wise. And this review is great too. You even kept the disease ridden water joke in Toxic Landfill, a joke that’s stuck with me for years. Seeing it again got me pretty happy. Edit: This review doesn’t feel the same as the original without the Sapphire Passage musical number I’m not gonna lie.
One of these days, Nintendo will realize the literal gold mine they have on their hands, only to for it to be too late... because it had been pilfered by Wario.
Can we request Goomba singing the beach song for Wario 4 fully please? Your singing was severely underrated. A great video for the great last portable Wario game before we go back to mediocrity and a somewhat fun albeit short Wii game.
I believe it’s possible on every boss apart from Spoilt Rotten which I believe is still impossible. But on other bosses it’s so difficult I’m pretty sure they intended you to use items

Wario land 4 was my first experience of the GBA, played one level on it in town at currys and asked for a gba for Christmas specifically with wario land 4. It was the best Christmas ever with wario land 4, super street fighter and mario kart super circuit and I still play these games a lot.
You could honestly take the same thing you said about Wario Land 4 coming off of an already perfect game and being just as perfect and apply it to this video, coming off of your last Wario Land 4 video, Goomba. It’s like you just took everything that we already loved about your last video and cleaned it up and made it much more formal and detailed, which we really like a lot. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Omg this was the first Wario game I've played, what an amazing game it was so wierd and bizarre and different and it was so good! I was getting tired of the same Nintendo platformer formulas, this was a breath of fresh air for me and to think it was out for about 20 years now. 10/10 would recommend, thank you Goomba for reviewing this!
Another game that did a Frozen Level mixed with a Factory Level was Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. It's more of an old, abandoned weapons factory, but it works out pretty well. Even has a giant Metal Slug homage boss battle (And some KickAss music, both prior to the factory and inside it).
When I played this game back when I was a kid/teenager, listening to the songs in the sound room always filled me with dread. It made me feel like the world was about to end.

3:14 inspirational words from the one and only goomba
14:05 reminds me of that one Wario Ware 3 level where the whole thing is just made of gold balls and spikes with little to no theming
Great video goomba your wario vids have all been amazing keep up the hard work chap😊
One of these days, Nintendo will realize the literal gold mine they have on their hands, only to for it to be too late... because it had been pilfered by Wario.
15:45 I know the ones (everyone agree with him it will keep him sane)
25:15 holy shit! It’s Wario’s iconic truck from Game & Watch Gallery 3’s Mario Bros game!
Can we request Goomba singing the beach song for Wario 4 fully please? Your singing was severely underrated.
A great video for the great last portable Wario game before we go back to mediocrity and a somewhat fun albeit short Wii game.
28:26 no I demand a stand alone video of you singing that uninterrupted that’ll then spring into a solo album. That was beautiful 😭
26:22 It’s possible. Every boss has a trick that lets you hit them more times than usual. I didn’t play the minigames once that playthrough
I believe it’s possible on every boss apart from Spoilt Rotten which I believe is still impossible.
But on other bosses it’s so difficult I’m pretty sure they intended you to use items
@@TheLonelyGoomba Bum rush him with R and make sure you shoulder tackle instead. Repeat until I think 3 health left jump over bum rush again
Edit just watched someone beat him, JUMP OVER AT ONE HEALTH
Wario land 4 was my first experience of the GBA, played one level on it in town at currys and asked for a gba for Christmas specifically with wario land 4. It was the best Christmas ever with wario land 4, super street fighter and mario kart super circuit and I still play these games a lot.
13:12 I think Kirby 64 also had a frozen factory level. I could be mistaken though
I recommend that everyone watch Automatic Pause's Wario Land series retrospective, very good channel and videos.
It's amazing that this game and the other games in the Wario Land series is what created Antonblast and Pizza Tower a thing
15:39 I know what you’re referring to but this reminds me much more of LEGO visually. Gameplay-wise it’s a board game though.
Phenomenal! Can’t wait for The Shake Dimension!
I'm going to add "shish" to my vocabulary for no other reason than it sounding funny.
I did not expect a DoobusGoobus cameo.
(commented here as well to raise that engagement)
When I played this game back when I was a kid/teenager, listening to the songs in the sound room always filled me with dread. It made me feel like the world was about to end.
