- The IBM x3650 M1 is an awesome server,, and with the IBM M5015 Raid Controller it is even more awesome.
With this Ninja trick this 8 year old IBM x3650 M1 can handle 18TB,, $100 server, $150 controler and $10 cable,, and a fortune in HD's.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.
On your standard x3650 Backplane you have an SAS Extender normally on an Standard SAS Lane you can run up to 128Disks
. So that should not be a Problem at all, those "El chepo" IBM Controlers are only Limited in the Firmware so you should try to flash them with the original 3Ware Firmware instand of the IBM Firmware you have to identify first which you've got but this trick works very well on 3ware 9750-4I then you get more out of El chepo an! And remember 3ware was bought from LSI so this trick is working on LSI cards as well.
Just as I scored a second x3650 (2x X5365 3ghz, 32 GB, 2x 146gb disks) for 18 dollars off eBay! Cool stuff for a project! Once more a great video!
awesome video... the M5015 is the IBM version of the LSI 9260-8i raid controller. and either of those controllers will do 8TB drives. I had a M5015 with a HP SAS expander and 16x 8TB driver in a raid 6 for a little over 100TB usable space.
The reason you are getting 1.5 gbps link speed is due to the limitation of the SAS expander that is built into the backplane.
Try running the BoMC tool for machine type 7979 and it may find a firmware update for the backplane. Depending on the revision of the backplane you may get 3.0 gbps link speed. still not 6.0 but better than 1.5 :)
Another thing you can do is flash the M5015 controller with the LSI firmware (avago now) and it will speed up POST time. :)
(I used to work for IBM system X server support in Atlanta support center so I am very familiar with the x3650, M2, M3, M4, M5 and all other x series servers and bladecenter stuff so if you have any questions about any of that feel free to ask)
Hi lnxpro
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Привет, как для контроллера m5015 включить режим jbod и использовать диски без создания raid массива?
you could use 10tb drives with m1015 but only raid 0,1,10. Thank you for saving me having to test if this will work. As for the price of the 5015, in Canada, I found that it is cheaper to buy an entire M3 server with 5015 than just the raid card :)
Yup I'm finding the same as well
Thank you for posting this. I'd seen it a while ago but I have a 3TB drive I want to put in my x3650 model one so I searched for it. Good information. I always learn something out of your videos. Thank you.
Hi Tracy Scott
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
the IBM ServerRAID M5015 can be cross flashed to LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i as thats all IBM really did, they can use 10TB disks, however not sure the backplane would support it, food for thought
I have two of these cards, for my workstation and microserver, a lot more reliable than the HP 410's I used to use, interesting to know I can get 6 drives per port with that backplane, loads up eBay!
Thanks for this video and content. This is still valuable info in Sept of 2020. I got one of the IBM M5014 cards, and it seems that it is stuck only seeing max of 2TB per drive. So I am just going to buy a newer one. You said those were $150-ish in 2016 for the M5015, and it has sure come down now to $40-dollars on some places. So, easier to just buy a newer card, because mine was refurbished and much older. Again, thanks for showing us how to solve problems like this, Mort.
I do beleave that the M5014 is just like the M5015, but with a little less cache. You may need to firmware update it..
It's a great raid card, I got the 9260-8I running a 4x 3TB raid 5 :)
Hi Alex L
Thank You very much! that looks very similar :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
I have a IBM M5014 with IBM M5000 key and flashed as LSI 9260 to boot faster . Raid 6 works Great :)
I just bought an IBM x3550 m3 off of ebay, with no hard drives, dual psus, and 8gb ram, I am going to be putting a 240gb ssd in it, and 64gb ddr3 ecc ram as it only has one cpu, the one cpu is 4 cores / 8 threads @ 2.53GHz, so excited for it, got a new rack too!
Hi eheh 1ew
Awesome,, I also have a new server you will be seeing quite a lot,, I hope.
Thank you for watching! :-)
Maybe you can load synologyOS onto the bare metal of the server to replace the smaller one in the background? That is good news regarding the raid controller. I'd also assume that the on-board raid controller is updated fully as well?
Well done :-D. Dam firmware updates, picky.
I guess that battery supplied memory strip near the back is saved configurations.
All serious raid controllers use battery backed Ram, I believe it saves cached data waiting to be written to the disks in case of power loss. If the server hasn't been used in a while it will complain that the battery is flat on next boot the config is NOT lost.
Thank you i didnt know that :-D
Im not into servers, but memory kept alive with battery is usually important, pending hdd data you say, clever arnt they :-)
Hi zx8401ztv
Intelligent Li-Ion-based battery backup unit with up to 48 hours of data retention:
ServeRAID M5015: Standard in the option part number
So if the server losses power in the middle of writing data,, you have 48 hours to power it up :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Yould use 6x 10TB archive drives. Maybe youll get them sponsored if you ask nicely.
Can you make a video about upgrading your jbod:s so they also can take larger disks?
Is the 2TB limit only on the x3650 M1. Does the M2 or M3 or M4 have the same limits?
Hi troyBORG
Thank You very much! As you see in this video it depends on the controller.
Thank you for watching! :-)
Cool video. Good to know for the future.
Hey thanks for your video, were you able to find out what the max drive size with the M5015 is on the latest firmware ? I assume 3TB is not the max.
Hi Florian Becker
This will help : th-cam.com/video/3OZSpgpAubg/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for watching! :-)
Great, exactly what I needed to know :-)
Very interesting video.
It seems the link for the cable is no longer good. Any chance you an provide a link for a similar cable? It was not easy to see the name, model, or any of that for the cable in the video either.
Thank You :-) Link to SAS cable has now been updated,, Thank You!
@@MyPlayHouseYou are welcome, I appreciate the update. Indeed, I am in the US so I simply saw the name of the UK store name (10Gtek) and found the US based version of the store. Thank you!
Great video as always
Hi FoxelVox
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Interesting video as always. If you are looking for fairly cheap raid controller that supports 2TB+ drives, maybe HP P410? I have one and I heard they support 2TB+ drives with firmware update, and it isn't too expensive.
Jerzyna aKwei I had many issues with P410 before I got the M5015, batteries and ram go bad, motherboard not supported or not showing every time on boot, i went through about three before giving up on them, I say avoid and get the IBM/lSI, a lot more reliable
I don't get why the raid card only allows for Sata 1.5GB connection speed if the card came from a M4. Should it not be 3? Or is the 3TB SAS drive only 1.5? Or it a limit of the server its in? Also is the server your testing it in fully patched for firmware? Great video.
Could be a limintation of the Backplane.
Hi RexorProxer
I also thinks it must be the backplane. Both disk and controller is 6Gbit.
Thank you for watching! :-)
Do you do virtual hosting out of your house?
Hi douro20
I am planing to do that.
Thank you for watching! :-)
I found this interesting article about one of the other cards, the M1015 can be converted to a LSI9211-8I to unlock some features that IBM has disabled. www.servethehome.com/ibm-serveraid-m1015-part-4/. It supports 6Gbps speed 3TB drives I think and looks to be cheaper than the M5015. (EDIT: Apparently it doesn't have cache)
I think that this have something to do with the legacy and the UEFI BIOS maybe the newer card is compatible whith UEFI and the old one is not
Why did you put the new raidcard in a 7945 to be upgraded?? i was hoping so much to see you upgrade it on a M1.
Hi Henk Kok
The BOMC for the M3, did not work on the M1 and I did not want to build a new "old" one.
Thank you for watching! :-)
As you know i got 2 M1s laying around here, still needing to update the firmware on them. But no luck sofar. Then i saw this movie and that opens some opportunities.
My Ibm m1 contains both a dual-port 4gb fiber HBA, and it would be nice to add the M5015 raid controller. Then it would be possible to create a fast storage SAN box to integrate in VMWare through fibre optics. That was my idea ... thanx for the response 👍🏼
Henk Kok You need an old BomC for this model : www-945.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/systemx/downloadFixes?parent=System%20x3650&product=ibm/systemx/7979&&platform=All&includeZip=false&function=fixId&fixids=ibm_utl_bomc_2.31_windows_i386&includeRequisites=1&includeSupersedes=0&downloadMethod=ddp
I am going to be trying out vSAN on some x3650 M1,,, but you need three for that.
I would love to see your upcomming video about vSAN !
wow just now I realized you actually use an anti-static wrist band
no need to reply, man
Could you please link the ibm express application for x3650 m1 I love your videos and happy holidays :)
Hi Tech University
Thank You very much! I have a video about the : th-cam.com/video/U6OouiyLuHc/w-d-xo.html
And the software can be downloaded from IBM and Lenovo: www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=tool-bomc
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse This is for the ibm x3650 m1 your favorite server ?
Looks like Host12 requires some love ;)
Hi Mac/au
Thank You very much! It is not completely satisfied with the AMD x16 card that I have put in the x8 slot :-/
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse But is VMware liking it is the main question?
ECC ram on normal desktop motherboard .will it work ??
depends on the board and processor you are using. ECC will not work in anything with i3,5,7 you need xeon processor fot that to work and then you need motherboard that is capable of handling ECC ram. Also most motherboards that can support ECC supports un-buffered ECC and these are different from Registered ECC used in normal servers. You need to try R. ECC in your motherboard, if it boots up good, if not then you are out of luck. For example my asrock X79 extreme6 with xeon E5-1650 works with Registered ECC even though the manual says it wont work.
Hurmm..... My friend say. ECC ram will work with xeon processor even motherboard not support ECC. because, ram controller is inside processor. Is that can be true.?
Their's a few i3/Pentium/Celeron 1610T for example that support ECC memory but its also down to the motherboard to support it.
Use a MB that is designed for what you need, ECC is important, be sure it is working correctly
I looked into a NAS solutions a year ago and settled on a Supermicro X10SL7-F motherboard LGA1150
14 drives can be connected no problems 6x SATA 8x SAS
Have Fun
PS Running the SAS controller in IT mode P16 on freeNAS OS
what doi do about resolution errors on an hp proliant dl 380 g4, what monitor would you recommend, none of mine work?
Hi eheh 1ew
If the monitor has been disabled in bios,, there might be a jumper on the system board,, to reset every think :-/ But the G4 is really one or two generations to old to be really fun.
Thank you for watching! :-)
its a resolution error, ive tried using an old emachine monitor from 2006, an old dell monitor, and an older flatscreen samsung monitor
Also, i got the servers for free, you can have one if you want, i got too many proliant dl380 g4's my uncle is a datacenter manager at americanmessaging.net they recently went virtual with a lot of their services, so they upgraded all hardware and my uncle sent me a huge pallet of servers.
I know that you host the Moovy web servers, so I was curious, what internet speed do you have that allows you to host a website like that? I have 100Mbps down / 23Mbps up, I run a few websites on my home servers. I connected to the moovy website and it loaded very fast, so I am curious what speeds you are getting.
Hi eheh 1ew
Well Moovy is not taking many resources, right now I am not hosting it,, it was moved some time back, when I needed to upgrade my server,, and we haven't moved it back yet. But 100/23Mbit would be more then fine!
Thank you for watching! :-)
Is this server compatible with regular SATA drives? Thanks
Hi -Navy
Yep : th-cam.com/video/nlT85Xf1AsQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for watching! :-)
Great! Thanks a lot!
The last time I got the same error 162 and 163. Since then no video and no post. Do you have any idea what can caused the issue? I had installed vmware 6.0 and it was working fine. Even while booting the server no power in USB keyboard and mouse.
Hi Brandon Watson
Sorry I have forgotten what I did in this video! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
In the world of Raid cards its really not that expensive. When they get up to the thousands that is crazy. You need to get one of the new 10Tb drives to see if it will run.
Scott
Hi Scott Downey
Thank You very much! 10TB is not best value,, right now :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
wy i need use a battery with raid controler ?
It’s mostly a high end Enterprise thing,, to prevent data loss in the case of power outages.
How hard would it be to turn a regular computer into a server
Hi JKish And Friends
Not hard,,, but you get quit an quality difference when you get an old server.
Thank you for watching! :-)
2,7TB < 3TB
I always had problems with the battery of the RAID Controller
Apparently that controller's utility hates TrackPoints... lol
shamelessly getting the first comment in :)
