    2:30 Just a correction: N64's Resident Evil 2 cartridge had a storage capacity of 512 megabits, not megabytes, which makes it even more impressive by putting a 1 GB+ game into just 64 MB.

    A couple suggestions for your next comparison videos: it's not really fair to use ePSXe for PlayStatation footage as it can't decompress backgrounds in the way they would appear on real hardware, official emulators, or even PCSX-r. ePSXe has barrel bottom decompression, macroblocks are a lot more in your face, and in general looks like crap especially when put against lossless sprites used to mask entity meshes. As for the N64 version, the artifact that you call dithering is actually video interlace (i.e. scanlines drawing in a pattern of even and odd lines switching every frame) and it's caused by how the N64 handles the 512x448 high resolution, which is still lower than 640x480 in Dreamcast, Gamecube, and PC ports. Dithering is what you would see on hardware that renders in 16 bits while trying to display smooth gradients by faking them through dot matrices.

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      So just a couplr things to say. First off thabk you a ton for all your suggestions, I alwaya look at them when people recommend some. To begin, unfortunately due to time, I wasn't able to acquire a PS1 copy, so i had to use an emulator for this. I am never a fan, but this was my first and only video i used PS1 emu footage. So apologies on my part there.
      And dithering is a 16 bit technique then....i see. Still learning some terms but bear with me on that. Just something i noticed on thr video, but i hope you enjoy the video and such. Definitely sounded like you did!

    N64 version also had extra files in the game that linked it more with RE3, RE0, and Code Veronica. It also allowed you to turn off tank controls.
    And it didn't have ALL the FMV cutscenes. Some were edited so that the same scene could be used for both Leon and Claire. For example: the scene where the helicopter crashes on the roof. In all other versions, the cutscene starts with a shot of either Leon or Claire looking up into the sky. The N64 version cuts that first shot so that the same cutscene can be used for both scenarios.

      To update my comment above:
      512megabits Mb is 64 megaBytes so 64MB. Most N64 games range anywhere from 4MB to 64MB, thats tiny compared to cds which store from 650MB to 700MB.
      so the compression that was done for re2 is impressive to say the least.

Got home played it, got to the basement and had to return it, so I saved enough money and 2 weeks after that I purchased a copy at KB Toys in the mall along with RE Directors Cut and I was immediately hooked. And to top it off in early 1999, capcom was advertising RE3 on TV, and I was like omfg yes! Bought it on its release in 99. Been an avid RE gamer since those days.

    Just a few small things. The N64 version runs at a higher resolution for field and models when it isn’t busy, but can drop to PS1 resolution depending on the amount of polys. The backgrounds are the lowest resolution of all ports/versions just stretched out to meet the higher screen resolution. The n64 version also has certain voice lines reused between different characters.You also forgot the files that you find explaining RE1s story for n64. I’m still amazed that version happened.

  • @Retro-Radar
    @Retro-Radar 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    What you refer to as 'dithering' is actually a graphical artifact called interlaced combing. Dithering is something else all together. Interlaced video allows for simulating higher resolutions, in this case 480i, while still only rendering 240 lines of pixels per frame. It achieves this by rendering every even-numbered line of pixels one frame, then every odd-numbered line of pixels the next frame.
    The downside of this, besides the typical jittery video associated with interlaced graphics, is that sometimes you'll notice this effect that resembles the teeth of a comb, like you point out in this video, where the even-numbered lines are noticeably ahead of the odd-numbered lines, or vice versa.
    This plays into why the Dreamcast is actually the best looking version of this game for most people playing on native hardware. The Dreamcast version runs at 480p (progressive scan, as opposed to interlaced) with a simple VGA cable. The Gamecube version runs at 480i natively, and requires either mods, external hardware, or a rare and expensive official Nintendo component cable to run in 480p mode.
    I know this is a 5 year old video, but I just find this kind of thing interesting and wanted to talk about it.

    • @Kelphelp
      @Kelphelp  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate your input man thank you, I will say though that this is the most commented typo of the video of it being interlacing rather than dithering, so I so get it now which I'm glad for.

    I think a lot of people discount the quality of n64 re2. The game’s sacrifices were decided upon the idea that the game would be played on a CRT, meaning many of the differences you wouldn’t have even noticed at the time it was released. It truly is an impressive port, and it’s very difficult to see some of the differences on a crt.

    • @Kelphelp

    That stripes in movement actually are not dithering, but interlacing artefacts. Other systems had them, too (except Dreamcast when played in VGA mode, don't know if the Cube version supports progressive scan via component), but maybe your capture equipment had a harder time deinterlacing the N64's signal.

    @ghaleon128 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Several point that people NEVER discuss about the DC version (for some unknown reason...) that make it the best are the addition of a concept art gallery, a 3D model viewer, and the fact that all the cutscenes are remastered to run at a higher framerate AND lose the black frames above and below the image on all the other versions that give them the appearance of a widescreen image when in reality, you're seeing less of the whole picture on the top and bottom of the screen. The DC version's cutscenes are displayed as full-screen, showing more of the whole picture. You can see it briefly in this video, but it's a point no one ever touches on in these comparisons.

    I've always much preferred the GameCube versions of both RE2 and RE3. I've also been looking forward to getting my hands on the Sourcenext version of both games. From what I've seen, RE2's Sourcenext version has been worked on by a certain modder for a long while and have applied many useful patches for it. They haven't gotten the chance to do similar fixes to RE3's Sourcenext version since they don't have a legitimate copy of the game. Really wish someone could apply similar patches to RE3's Sourcenext since RE3 is my favorite out of the original trilogy.

    A important correction 3:54 this is NOT dithering this is interlacing artifacts because as you showed you are using the higher resolution mode which is 480i. Dithering are small points of noise applied to the image to give an impression of more colors in cost of less image clarity, PS1 relied heavily on this trick not N64. You also wrongly said that only half of Leon is rendered that is also not true. That happens because on interlaced image such as 480i only half of a frame is send to the screen but the frame rendered does not change

    Personally the N64 is one of the best ports IMO. Nintendo was so good about making up for shortcomings. The N64 version of RE2 also had a lot of new files and costumes. Have you ever seen Duke Nukem 64? The original game had a LOOOOOOT of nudity and things that otherwise had to be censored on N64. That being said, instead of just removing everything, they were creative and made it these references into other funny references or new locations. Like one level is literally called "Red Light District" with a pornography store, strip club and bar. In the N64, its a gun store, restaurant, and kitchen.

    Additional to the N64 version, there are several cutscenes which have been doctored, to remove the "specific character" that is being played, meaning that you just recycle the same cutscene.
    For example, the helicopter crash onto of the RPD. This usually has a brief clip of Leon or Claire's reaction to it. That is simply cut, and the same sort of thing is true of ANY "character specific" scene, clearly as just another trick to save on space.

    • @ChiruKobra
      @ChiruKobra 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1st person mode it such a game changer. In some parts it makes the game way easier, allowing you to get past zombies way faster than tank controls could. On the other hand, it's quite disorienting with the fixed camera angles. If, for example, you're trying to get past a Licker and the camera keeps screwing your controls, you could have an unintentionally tense time.
      I say it's worth experiencing those controls at least once if you're an RE2 fan.

    • @Dargonhuman

      @@ChiruKobra Agreed, though if memory serves, in the PC port, the first person controls "lock" the direction you're moving into the new screen so long as you're holding that key down during the transition, then reorient themselves when you let go.
      For example, if the screen you're on is oriented so Up goes East, then the next screen has Up going South, the game locks the controls so Up is still East in the new screen until you release it and it changes to South.

      @@Kelphelp Capcom did make a JoJo fighter and was porting it some in the late 90's. They certainly weren't strangers to it.

    Looks like I really lucked out. I got my copy of RE2 back in 2011 for about $11.

    this is one of those games that epitomizes my love of video games. i really liked the n64 version because of the cheats. i suck at resident evil games, but love them anyway. so that invincibility cheat helped suck ass me through the experience of the story at least. plus the n64 version just has a mystique. the n64 game that shouldn't exist. the impossible n64 game. two playstation disks on an n64 cartridge? it can't be done! but here it is.

      Those cheats are actually on every version but the original vanilla one on PS1! Totally agree, having those cheats on makes for a fun playthrough to speed through.
