I've been watching a lot of *Super Mario Sunshine* retrospectives lately. I was 11 when the game came out in 2002, but my parents didn't buy new games often, so I replayed the ones I had, including *Sunshine*, on and off until the Wii was released. Listening to these videos feels nostalgic, comforting, and relaxing-it's like hearing people discuss a part of my childhood that feels personal and unique, yet relatable to so many others.
I feel like games in the late 90's/early 00's went through loads of changes both ocarina of time and wind waker, super mario 64 and sunshine, pokemon gold and silver, starfox adventure and resident evil 4 being diferent too.
The original Sunshine kinda reminds me of Here Comes Niko. Helping people and learning about the island while collecting enough coins to move onto the next part. Seems super layed back. Sonic Adventure type humans who react to the world would have awesome too
Despite its flaws, it's still my favorite of the 3d mario games. Interesting seeing the evolution of this game. I was already in my late 20s when this game was released but I never knew about a lot these scraped version insights. Very interesting.
Super Mario Sunshine was my favourite Mario game, mostly cause unlike the other games like 64, and Odyssey (I’ve never played Galaxy), you felt like you were really changing things for the better with the shine sprites slowly bringing back the Sun. Now whilst I thing the original concept wouldn’t have been as good I would love a Sunshine 2 where we visit all the old levels plus the levels we already got just with more updated graphics. So basically a modern hybrid of the original Sunshine idea and the Sunshine we got
"Y'know Mario, we're both middle aged men, so lemme be honest with you... Life...takes you to weird places. If you'd told me a year ago, "you're gonna find yourself locked behind a comically absurd number of doors, elbow deep in icecream, unable to get it outside and to your daughter who you cannot afford to disappoint" I would've probably cried in the the corner for 30 minutes. The only reason I'm NOT crying right now is the cold is numbing my senses, and I may be developing frostbite. I'm losing hope, Mario. I'm losing my daughters love, my job at the factory, my grasp on reality, and soon, my hands. I'm not sure what left I have to loose, Mario."
i know this is a little unrelated, but i actually recently met charles martinet (marios voice actor) at a comic con to get my copy of sunshine signed, and he told me that sunshine was always his favorite, and that he wished nintendo made 4 sequels to it
Sunshine has always been my favorite 3D Mario despite all of its jank. It just has such a lovely feel to its world and it feels so real and alive. Speaking of favorites, I just want you to know that Grotle is also one of my favorite pokemon. No reason why I'm sharing that. :)
I've realized recently how important it is to support smaller content creators so I just wanted to say I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you for the work you put into it!
Super Mario Sunshine is one of my favorite games of all time and is a super important piece of my childhood. I love the beta and cut content for this game and this video showed me so much stuff I had never seen before. Thank you for making this!
Interestingly enough the Goomba seen as an unused model in Pikmin that was briefly shown towards the end of the video, STRONGLY resembles Kug! This seems to further prove that Sunshine and the potential GameCube era of Mario would have used those Goomba designs and made them into a prominent Goomba variant in the series.
I love how thia video refers to the fire chestnut like its a horror that should be locked at the bottom of the ocean. Because that's exactly what that creature is.
57:00 I suspect if Sunshine got an extra year, it’d have run at 60 FPS. It’s pretty obvious why they cut the frame rate, look at the E3 2002 water and you’ll see what I mean, they added pretty impressive reflections that must have tanked the framerate. Now locking the frame rate over an impressive graphical effect wasn’t always the most common thing to see on the GameCube, but it was extremely common on the N64 and I can’t help but wonder if that mindset carried over a bit, and if that would have changed given extra time in the oven (and the chance to look at other games releasing around that time)
Great video!!!, tried to refind goku after watching because I swear it's in one of them chapter transitions. it's sad I couldn't find it Great video!!!
Tbh I do get the vibe that OG Sunshine might have turned out to be a disappointing game just because of the whole "doing menial tasks to help NPCs" thing instead of a collectathon might have ended up as a pretty boring game. Also considering how jank the final game already is I think it was for the best to shift it to something traditional.
Dude I remember watching portable when he did his Luigi’s mansion beta restoration. One day he had released like a song or a concept video of some kind and I remember commenting about how a full Mario sunshine beta restoration would be awesome. You have no idea how surprised I was when he linked me a video to the trailer for it like 2 years later I had forgotten all about it😂
For those asking about the voiced dialogue being heard on one ear only, I can assume it’s for the sake of evoking that retro vibe that was experienced in the last century, where CRT TVs were commonly used and only had a mono input; hence, why you tend to find old footage from decades ago online that can only be heard on one ear. In fact, if you paid attention to how the thumbnail and each cutscene concept looked, there is a filter on top of them that gives it that old school tv look of having scan lines across the screen. While the mono audio doesn’t really bother me that much, I can see why this is jarring for some.
Mono audio can still be played in both ears, mono simply means the audio is all mixed toghether in one channel while stereo is mixed in layers which allows for stuff like playing certain sounds in one direction to give a deeper sense of physical space to the sounds while in mono it would simply play on both ears. I think they might have intended to make the clips sound mono but accidentally made it so it only plays on one ear, that's also why you see those videos where the sounds play on one ear only.
I would have loved to get to experience the completed version of Sunshine, with working trains, airports, humans, soul coins, bigger cities, posh areas and even more to do. It's my favorite Mario game so knowing that there was even more to it than what we got is devastating to me

No, all glitches shown in this video can happen in the GameCube version, the first clip is literally on GameCube hardware please stop stating that they are problems with 3D All Stars, they are not, that is not how emulation works, Sunshine has glitches and that's ok
I grew up with the trauma of never being able to find the Green Yoshi on the manual, i used to think as a kid thay there was a secret fruit that would make him green that i never found Lol!
@59:31 That reminded me SO MUCH of the "genius" kojima. He really tends to talk a lot, and I get the feeling that most of his accomplishments have been nothing short of miracles. Anyway, this was quite fulfilling and enjoyable!
Great video, and these beta clips and unused mission dialogs are fascinating. For my part, I feel like we got the better game. It was only the second fully 3D mainline Mario game; they could have gone anywhere after 64 but I'm glad they didn't. It's basically the gameplay of SM64 but with better graphics and a wider, tighter moveset. Totally addition by subtraction, here.
Amazing video! This was really informative. I honestly love how weird Sunshine is, and it's nice to learn about things such as the dialogue for the scrapped human family. I always thought it was cool how they were originally going to have human NPCs on Delfino Island like the humans in Sonic Adventure. My butt is firmly planted in a seat as a subscriber now. I'd love if you made videos talking about Sonic Adventure or especially Mother 3's development like you hinted at. They're super fascinating as well. Like how Sonic Team used real-life pictures of South American temples as textures in SA1&2. I wish the EarthBound 64 prototype would leak someday as well...
I am forever fascinated with Sunshiene’s beta as there was so much that changed or got left out. We desperately need a beta build of the game to leak so that all the unused stuff can finally be explained. Also, as much as people seem to dislike Tramplin’ Stu, I think his concept was interesting and if they had made the design more ‘cute’ and replaced the third eye I’m sure the author of this video wouldn’t be so disgusted by him. The human family is also very interesting as we only had a brief low quality glimpse of the daughter and I’m super curious to know more. The train system would be an interesting thing to see too.
The real lore is Nintendo wanted to create a powerful weapon. Mario posessed a jet pack with blowing power and h2o. Luigi posesses sucking power with a vacuum and ghost energy (fusion). Together they create yin and yang and can create forcefields with their backpacks combined.
Mumsy is so SAVAGE.... I remember as a kid, trying every fruit to get a Green Yoshi, i was so sad the only way to see one was pretty much drop him in water. He turns green before evalorating..
Amazing video Mz! It was cool to learn about so much content for sunshine it was my first Mario game so having some cool fun facts is nice. I do wish Yoshi stayed normal. I was also confused why I couldn't get a green Yoshi.
I was almost done with this video when I noticed this has so little views...HOW?? Like bro I'm so surprised i thought this would have so many more views, it's so well edited and well made. This is one of the most through videos on the topic, and you did a great job explaining stuff, especially how you depicted the unused dialogue. This video is a good mix of fact and opinions on the beta of this game. Please make more videos like this, this was such an awesome video! Incredible work!!
Okay, just gotta say: The people who voiced the characters did an AMAZING job! Not only does it just sound awesome in general - it somehow also actually sounds like it could've been in some weird, alternate timeline version of the game.
if you guys wish to see what the scrapped levels looked like from people's interpretations, go play super mario eclipse!! its a very fun romhack which adds these and even the train station!
Game grumps playing the pachinko level was 100% the correct video to play to show the fuckery that went on with the collision in this game lol. AND I REMEMBER AS A KID WINNING THE BLOOPER LEVEL AND DYING WHILE TRYING TO GET THE SHINE SO MANY TIMES LOL

Kug looks like he was drawn by Bowser Jr. , so maybe he was a painting that moved around or a type of enemy that he created with his paintbrush
44:05 The GioGio's Bizarre Adventure caught me off guard sooo bad omg what are they doing here
Awesome work on the video! Having the cut missions formatted with dialogue and the characters made me so immersed haha
He turns green before evalorating..
i love videos like this about games like mario 64, this is gonna be great!
Amazing video Mz! It was cool to learn about so much content for sunshine it was my first Mario game so having some cool fun facts is nice. I do wish Yoshi stayed normal. I was also confused why I couldn't get a green Yoshi.
You reminded me that the gap between 64 and Sunshine was only 6 years, that's insane
I hope earlier versions (or concept art) could possibly shown at the nintendo museum that’s gonna open up soon
All E3 and Space World levels are playable in the post-game of Super Mario Eclipse!
maybe noki bay was going to be enterable from ricco harbor
Wow it’s such an aesthetically pleasing look I wish we got the beta tbh thank you for this video
Incredible work!!
bro it's 2 days old, how many views were you expecting?
lolll stop riding him
Holy fuck the Mike Matei reference left me shellshocked. That was the most unexpected thing in this whole video.
I freaking love Super Mario Sunshine I smoked so much weed playing that game. Ganja and sunshine.
“Nikos dad” gives me big siegmeyer from dark souls vibes with how hopeless he is with tasks
You need to get big, this was amazing and thorough
17:54 I strongly suspect this character was voiced by Melvin Forrest, NOA's QA department manager. He sounds exactly like him. Wild.
I clicked the video so fast. Love this game. Great video!
Great video on my favourite Mario game! I hope this blows up on TH-cam, well made video!!!!
I am SO happy the family scenarios were cut. They were very annoying lol
Sunshine recently got a HUGE mod that was needed and made the game 10x better.
Thanks for making a video on this really specific topic, I’ve always been interested in this games development. Time to watch this video over and over and over and
I remember the adult direction quote was due to the pressure Shiggy was getting from mature games on PlayStation.
