No mention of When the Pawn by Fiona Apple? One of the greatest singer-songwriter records ever and a great example of an artist with real generational talent. Definitely a big snub for - she’s even got Apple in her name!
The way people feel about Taylor Swift fans I feel like is even more true about Beyoncé's fans. It feels like they force us to put her up there with the greatest artists of all time. She makes good pop/r&b music, but I don't feel like her music deserves that level of acclaim.
Understand the opinion but definitely not.. if that's your personal view point I can see why cause of fans but besides how any fanbase can can be it is deserved and earned in Beyonce case. I recommend listening to lemonade alone like another comment said. i say it would show you Alot and even more so if you watched the film with that album the message and visuals are out of this world, the topics of marriage struggles, racism, womanhood and more are so powerful And unlike Taylor Swift besides just being popular and having streaming numbers with Beyonce there actual impact and changes to the landscape of music with each album drop since self titled with the music, films and just unhuman work ethic , performances and overall talent, she really is one of our very few mega stars especially from her era still living today making culture shifting work, while in theory she should be slowing down or getting worse she just keep putting out even better work, And even more so then fans, critics and many artist even on this very list look up to her and stand up for her cause the work she does is truly inspiring, even at awards shows where many times now when she was nominated for album of the year and other artist nominated AND spoke out after her being snubbed. Literally Adele won a few years back and said she couldn't accept the award cause lemonade was THAT monumental. Opposed to a Taylor like mentioned for example that won 3 or 4 times now (once over Kendrick to pimp a butterfly of all things) granted she makes great music for her audience but her music didn't hit the same level as a Kendrick not Beyonce (she literally looks up to her) or tackles these important and still relevant topics racism issues, black empowerment, queerness and LGBT awareness and more all done in a great and moving way! I also recommended Renaissance from Beyonce! Very great and forward thinking album that honor's queer culture so well! But yeah imo that's few of the biggest differences between those two
My snubs: Mbv- loveless/mbv Title fight- shed/floral green Kendrick-tpab/damn Daft punk- random access memories Gorillaz-plastic beach/demon days And probably about a thousand more
I will say, I just really like to hear you two talk about your own music histories. Graydon especially has a perspective on jazz/funk that you don't hear a lot of on Music TH-cam, and it's valuable
no emo, hardcore, metal, shoegaze, post rock, or any truly alternative music was here. every “rock” album included was the sort to be sold on a T shirt at kohls
I always think this about top 100 lists. obviously music is entirely subjective so it’s hard to determine THE best album etc. but it often feels like these lists are the best albums that are mainstream enough for people to know about. there is almost certainly 100s of albums out there that are objectively better than many on this list that would never show up because they aren’t known. kind of the issue with trying to objectively rank an art form ( like how do you logically compare an emo album to a hip hop album) but it does feel like they’re ranking common preference rather than quality. mainstream music isn’t objectively better but that’s what these lists will always reflect
@@clarasbeans agreed, also a list that includes a lot of underground artists won’t be marketable because people won’t identify with it as much. people want to feel vindicated and validated and see their favorite artists and albums on a list like this. When you put underground music on a list like that, you risk marketability and shareability.
Wish you were Here, Any Black Sabbath Album, Dirt - Alice in Chains, The Black saint and the sinner Lady - Charles Mingus are all major snubs, some other albums I personally would like to have seen and would absolutely derserve to be on here are Qotsa - Songs for the Deaf, Freddie Gibbs - Piñata and Promises - Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points
If we’re being real, there’s no way Paranoid by Black Sabbath doesn’t crack the top 100. It’s one of the first metal albums ever made, AND one which is iconic to this day.
as a lifelong Taylor Swift fan, I think she deserved an album on the list, but I don't think it should've been 1989 and I think whatever Taylor album was on the list should've been in the bottom 50
I think folklore should’ve been on here because it’s just better in terms of storytelling, lyrics, sound, uniqueness, etc - I love all her albums (to different degrees obviously) but 1989 is an album that should have been lower, i think they only did it because it’s such a popular album - like any Taylor fan will tell you that it’s not her best work even if it’s their fav
Music is subjective. What a bunch of music dorks and snobs think is irrelevant. If you want to put a Taylor Swift album high up in your top album list then do it.
1989 had a HUGE influence on the pop music that came after it so i’m assuming that’s why it’s here. that said, i think it’s wayy way too high on the list
I feel like Riley's point about The Swifties being the reason for Taylor in the top 20 explains more about the list than just that placement. There are a ton of contemporary female artists with rabid stanbases on this list (Taylor, SZA, Lana, Billie Eilish, Rihanna, etc.) who's inclusions ramp up interactions with the list due to back and forth online reactions of approval/outrage to those placements. Inclusion of other albums by currently popular artists (Bad Bunny, Drake, Travis Scott, Tyler, etc.) just make it more clear that this list exists predominantly to boost interactions via baiting fanbases rather than honestly gauge the history of popular music.
I agree with my dad, who said there wasn’t nearly enough synth music, like Depeche Mode or New Order. He was happy with the Nine Inch Nails inclusion tho
snubs for me: Simon & Garfunkel, The Kinks, The Who, The Police, Peter Gabriel, Any Motown act other than Stevie and Marvin, REM, and my #1 - Van Morrison.
Slipknot self titled was one of the most influential albums in nu metal as well as Joey Jordison being one of the most influential drummers. And toxicity by SOAD not being included blows my mind
I really appreciate you guys talking about Clics Modernos! I'm from Argentina and that's one of my favorite albums of all time. Glad you enjoy it as well.
Johnny Cash, The Weeknd, Lil Wayne, Funkadelics, Willy, Waylon, Simon and Garfunkel, Black Sabbath, sooo many artists that should have been here. Instead we got Bad Bunny lmaooo
For me, the crazy omission is Since I Left You by the Avalanches, the way that album flows and takes you to so many places makes it my favorite album to listen to front to back, its incredible
graydon said everything i was thinking about country not being on the list, down to red headed stranger being the obvious pick. I'd also include jolene, live at folsom prison, and the townes van zandt self titled at least
I think Waylon deserved a spot somewhere in there too. Like even as someone that doesn’t know country too well he has such a reach and such a way with words
would have loved to see at the drive in, the mars volta, danny brown, death grips, sophie or green day, was honestly shocked that there was no toxicity, hybrid theory or any of the first few black sabbath albums. a lot of artists were right to be on there but not the album i'd pick from them (kendrick, tyler, nirvana) also, the fame monster definitely belongs on the list, that album is 🔥 and surprisingly influential to the trajectory of popular music the past decade or so
This is such an interesting video because you can tell that Riley and Graydon are not doing bits. Don’t get me wrong. I love their bits, I am just glad to see them talking how they really feel.
Or Judas Priest, Pantera, System of a Down, Deftones , or Linkin Park I’m not so big of a metal head that I’m super upset with metal being underrepresented. However, there were amazing metal albums that were snubbed.
I know you guys don't really do reaction videos to albums or artists, but it would be super cool to hear your thoughts on some world music that you might never have heard of. Maybe let your subscribers or the patreons submit an album from their country in their language and then take the time (cause it will take time lol) to listen to it and look at lyric translations and then do a bracket showdown of them or a tier list
One of the albums I thought of that I think absolutely deserves a spot somewhere on the list is Marquee Moon by Television. An absolute classic and perfect album.
@@natefroggy3626 i’m sure you’ve at least heard of live at folsom prison by johnny cash. black saint and the sinner lady is charles mingus and it’s generally considered one of the best jazz albums of all time. Watermelon man is Herbie Hancock, graydon mentions it in the video. CSNY is Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, another group that was very popular in its day, but actually if any album was going to be on here it would be Crosby Stills and Nash. Paranoid is by black sabbath and I think you would at least recognise the title track. Seminal metal album, created like 30 subgenres of metal, really subtle and tasteful stuff. Tommy Iommi is the goat fr.
Tbh im happy with #1 because I grew up on 90s R & B, so that would probably be my #1 too. Riley mentioning that this album was new for a lot of people was a shock to me tbh bc I've been listening to Lauryn Hill since I was a kid.
nothing pisses me off more than his music taste. floyd is so influential and its insane for someone who likes radiohead so much to be so anti pink floyd considering how similar their music can be.
@@agirl9041 it bums me out cause I would love if they were to talk about them at all, but that will never happen since Riley doesn’t like them and Graydon doesn’t like them enough to ever bring them up.
i think because there were better grunge albums (nevermind by nirvana is top ten) and pearl jam didnt influence much outside of grunge, which wasnt that popular for more thatn 2/3 years
Just wanted to say I checked out the Labi Siffre album and holy shit what a hidden gem. That shit was so beautiful and thanks for mentioning it. Def a top 100 album of all time
Ten by Pearl Jam is my personal biggest snub. I understand Nevermind has more impact as a grunge album, but Ten is just as good. Additionally no RHCP, Black Sabbath, 2001, TPAB, Led Zeppelin IV, and so on is crazy
Y’know, as big of a fan I am of Queen, I cant really think of an album that could fit in the top 100 of all time. I guess maybe either A Night at the Opera or Queen II. Maybe even A Day At The Races.
I feel like it’s gotta be intentional. Like someone at Apple absolutely knew putting a few wild out there takes in-between a handful of universally agreed upon picks is a sure fire way to make one of these ”top albums” lists go viral and get people talking
Television - Marquee Moon Big Star - #1 Record Built to Spill - Perfect from Now On Nick Drake - Pink Moon Elliott Smith - Either/Or Weezer - Blue Album King Crimson - Red GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas Green Day - Dookie My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Slint - Spiderland Madvillainy But at least they had Bad BUnny
I'm kinda thrown off by the lack of not only traditional jazz but jazz fusion. I thought ONE of the three Headhunters, Heavy Weather or Bitches Brew would've been guaranteed. Hell if they wanted to be a little more hip they could've had The Inner Mounting flame but that's just me.
Music has been around for so long that such lists are crazy to me. They should limit them, like best 100 albums from the 2010s, 00s because so much great music has been made recently that it's frustrating to constantly see the same albums over and over and over. Like yeah, abbey road is great, the chronic is great, purple rain is great but do I need to be reminded of that again?? So many good modern albums get snubbed because of our constant need to shoehorn the same 70 ones. It's okay to admit that the new generation makes good music too. And that will also serve as a great way to contrast how sound has changed over the years. Also, renaissance is beyonce's best album
You’re so right on Renaissance being Bey’s best album, but like I think 3 Beyoncé albums on the list would’ve been too much and Renaissance is still pretty recent. All 3 of them are no skips for me but I think self titled should’ve been a little higher up. at least top 20 if Taylor and Adele were up there (Adele would agree)
@@bertramwinkleofficial I just worry that renaissance will never make it into such lists no matter how amazing it was, (especially that tour!) just because we'll have to constantly be like, renaissance above purple rain?? Or sth like that. No space for future, jpegmafia, polachek, jessie ware, even folklore should be given a chance in the conversation, like low 90s. Let the newbies shine. Let's celebrate the legends in separate lists
the craziest thing to me about this list is that they listed taylor swift but like as someone who lives with swifties it’s not even the best taylor album. where is folklore? hello speak now? has anyone seen evermore anywhere?
I agree with a bunch of the picks riley and graydon said but id also like to say that while expected, this list had like absolutely no punk and metal albums here besides london calling and master of puppets. I get that these types of critics arent really big into these genres but there SHOULD have been some ones here. My picks would be for punk: My war by Black Flag (damaged could also do, but i think my war would start a more interesting conversation about the type of music that was inspired by it, like sludge metal, grunge and more) Static age by the misfits (classic classic album that gives u the best of early punk, the energy, attitude and songwriting are all in its peak form) Bad brains by bad brains (the quintessential hardcore punk album really that inspired every single person in that scene, it also has all this reggae genre fusion in it so it really could work as a critics choice. Also they are an all black punk so some more representation would be nice) Repeater by fugazi (if u wanna show a different and more progressive side of punk and the post hardcore scene, i think that this would be a really great pick. Fugazi are some of the most prolific musicians and their work outside of the music also is just as important REALLY should have been here imo since its also a critics pick) Jane doe by converge (this is a very critic bait album but for top 100 i understand that it might have been a bit much (especially since theres no heavy music here) but its a classic that really pushed the boundaries of heavy music and deserves to be here) Spiderland by slint (HOW IS THIS NOT ON THERE. Im not even the biggest slint fan but this is such a no brainer idk how this missed the list) Plastic Surgery Disasters by Dead kennedys (fresh fruit could also work, dead kennedys are a must and if this was the only record of these on the list id be fine with it. Perfectly encapsulates the best things of the genre) For metal id say: Number of the beast by Iron Maiden (really one of the most iconic albums ever, from the cover to the songs its just really the essence of 80s metal and it should have been on the list) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath by Black sabath (im putting this one here cause its my favorite but like... how is there no sabbath here thats crazy. I think their most deserving here would be paranoid or master of reality) Sound of persevearence by Death (this never would have made it but i think death def deserves to be in the conversation of having albums in the top 100 oat. Chuck was an incredible songwriter and their music hits a nerve that no other band rly does) Toxicuty by SOAD (Rage against the machine was here so ig that covered it but i think this album def deserves to be on the list, even if my fave is the debut) There are a lot more albums and bands that are just as deserving but i think this would cover a good ground. I dont think that theres a universe where all thess could have been in there but a few of these should have made the cut IMO to atleast acknowledge some others sides of music. All in all dignan had a gun on the executives face so the list was rigged
Really bothers me that no one is mentioning Since I Left You by The Avalanches like that is one of the most revolutionary albums ever made and it's incredible so why is no one bothered it never showed up
Insane .... but Beyonce cracks the Top 10. This is an insult to the industry, all musicians and listeners and makes the panel that made the list look like frauds and imbeciles.
Labi Siffre is alive and well bud! Agree he deserves a place on this list and that's my fave album of his too. But he's still very much in the present tense, there's time to give him his flowers 💐
People do this with Grace Jones too (another glaring omission from this list imo), people talk about her in the past tense when she's 76, still formidable and releasing music and collaborating with cutting-edge younger musicians.

Yessss love that
Apparently the folks at Apple are not prog rock fans. Sorry Genesis, Yes, Rush... also where the heck is Joy Division?
I will say, I just really like to hear you two talk about your own music histories. Graydon especially has a perspective on jazz/funk that you don't hear a lot of on Music TH-cam, and it's valuable
Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen was snubbed
This is just true
REAL
Real
enormous facts
Putting 1989 on there and not emotion is criminal
no emo, hardcore, metal, shoegaze, post rock, or any truly alternative music was here. every “rock” album included was the sort to be sold on a T shirt at kohls
No van halen either😂
Wish you were Here, Any Black Sabbath Album, Dirt - Alice in Chains, The Black saint and the sinner Lady - Charles Mingus are all major snubs, some other albums I personally would like to have seen and would absolutely derserve to be on here are Qotsa - Songs for the Deaf, Freddie Gibbs - Piñata and Promises - Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points
i would do Jar of Flies personally but yeah no aic is wild especially with nevermind in the top 10.
Fair take
If we’re being real, there’s no way Paranoid by Black Sabbath doesn’t crack the top 100. It’s one of the first metal albums ever made, AND one which is iconic to this day.
if they were only going to put one metal album it should have been paranoid instead of master of puppets
@@rndmbs even though it should have both
The fact that In Rainbows, TPAB, and the fact DOOM wasnt even on the list legitimately is grounds for a fist fight
as a lifelong Taylor Swift fan, I think she deserved an album on the list, but I don't think it should've been 1989 and I think whatever Taylor album was on the list should've been in the bottom 50
Personally I think they should have reserved a spot just for “seven” even tho it’s a song
I think if it was folklore in that spot instead people would have MUCH less of an issue with her inclusion.

Since I Left You - The Avalanches, Entroducing... - DJ Shadow and Donuts - J Dilla missing is so sad to see :(
Plunderphonic bros... we lost

Pink Floyd is probably my favorite band of all time and it always makes me a bit sad that Riley actively dislikes them.
nothing pisses me off more than his music taste. floyd is so influential and its insane for someone who likes radiohead so much to be so anti pink floyd considering how similar their music can be.
@@agirl9041 it bums me out cause I would love if they were to talk about them at all, but that will never happen since Riley doesn’t like them and Graydon doesn’t like them enough to ever bring them up.
Am I psychotic for thinking Ten would be on the list? Pearl Jam??? Surprised me they didn’t slip it in for it’s sheer impact on grunge

I'm kinda thrown off by the lack of not only traditional jazz but jazz fusion. I thought ONE of the three Headhunters, Heavy Weather or Bitches Brew would've been guaranteed. Hell if they wanted to be a little more hip they could've had The Inner Mounting flame but that's just me.
ants from up there snubbed
them thinking flower boy is tyler's best album and also it being so low is lowkey insane to me
Im not that into country, but no Dolly, Johnny or Willie is kind of nuts.
Or just look for the list of contemporary albums and don't demand the all-time list be flooded with new ones?
Long Season by Fishmans getting snubbed from the snubbed albums mentioned
the craziest thing to me about this list is that they listed taylor swift but like as someone who lives with swifties it’s not even the best taylor album. where is folklore? hello speak now? has anyone seen evermore anywhere?
I agree with a bunch of the picks riley and graydon said but id also like to say that while expected, this list had like absolutely no punk and metal albums here besides london calling and master of puppets. I get that these types of critics arent really big into these genres but there SHOULD have been some ones here.
My picks would be for punk:
My war by Black Flag (damaged could also do, but i think my war would start a more interesting conversation about the type of music that was inspired by it, like sludge metal, grunge and more)
Static age by the misfits (classic classic album that gives u the best of early punk, the energy, attitude and songwriting are all in its peak form)
Bad brains by bad brains (the quintessential hardcore punk album really that inspired every single person in that scene, it also has all this reggae genre fusion in it so it really could work as a critics choice. Also they are an all black punk so some more representation would be nice)
Repeater by fugazi (if u wanna show a different and more progressive side of punk and the post hardcore scene, i think that this would be a really great pick. Fugazi are some of the most prolific musicians and their work outside of the music also is just as important REALLY should have been here imo since its also a critics pick)
Jane doe by converge (this is a very critic bait album but for top 100 i understand that it might have been a bit much (especially since theres no heavy music here) but its a classic that really pushed the boundaries of heavy music and deserves to be here)
Spiderland by slint (HOW IS THIS NOT ON THERE. Im not even the biggest slint fan but this is such a no brainer idk how this missed the list)
Plastic Surgery Disasters by Dead kennedys (fresh fruit could also work, dead kennedys are a must and if this was the only record of these on the list id be fine with it. Perfectly encapsulates the best things of the genre)
For metal id say:
Number of the beast by Iron Maiden (really one of the most iconic albums ever, from the cover to the songs its just really the essence of 80s metal and it should have been on the list)
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath by Black sabath (im putting this one here cause its my favorite but like... how is there no sabbath here thats crazy. I think their most deserving here would be paranoid or master of reality)
Sound of persevearence by Death (this never would have made it but i think death def deserves to be in the conversation of having albums in the top 100 oat. Chuck was an incredible songwriter and their music hits a nerve that no other band rly does)
Toxicuty by SOAD (Rage against the machine was here so ig that covered it but i think this album def deserves to be on the list, even if my fave is the debut)
There are a lot more albums and bands that are just as deserving but i think this would cover a good ground. I dont think that theres a universe where all thess could have been in there but a few of these should have made the cut IMO to atleast acknowledge some others sides of music. All in all dignan had a gun on the executives face so the list was rigged
For real no slint is insane
I didn’t even think about Slint being on here but now that you mention it your right
Really bothers me that no one is mentioning Since I Left You by The Avalanches like that is one of the most revolutionary albums ever made and it's incredible so why is no one bothered it never showed up
Sgt Pepper has been consistently considered the single greatest album of all time for decades and it didn’t even crack the top 100
Insane .... but Beyonce cracks the Top 10. This is an insult to the industry, all musicians and listeners and makes the panel that made the list look like frauds and imbeciles.
Regency bias is crazy on this list- no way are Beethoven, Rossini AND Liszt better than Bach
Bach is the GOAT.
This is going to be so good. I love you guys but I can’t handle many more long form videos about 2005-10 comedy movies right now 😭😭
Labi Siffre is alive and well bud!
Don't bury our icons when they're still alive and creating - older and dead are not the same thing!
