THIS IS IT!!! the spider that traumatized me as a kid! i remember being at daycare, in the sandbox below the backyard play structure, when i looked up and saw this! its been 15 years, maybe. crazy to see it again after all this time!
I use to see golden orb weavers all the time here in Florida but these past 2 years almost nothing. I love them. They just hang around. During the rain they hang upsidedown on their web so the rain flows over them and down their legs so they don't drown. They do bite but it just leaves an itchy little bump. At least on me it did.
I hate spiders but I live near the city and I never seen a golden orb spider unless it was out in the country side and even then I don’t see them, I actually ended up having one in front of my front door at my house. Our "invasion" of these spiders happened 3 or 4 years ago in Savannah, one summer their were hundreds of them, the next year and since you only saw a few. I imagine they came right through our ports.
I have saw a few of these. I’m in South Carolina. I just lumped them in as a species of garden spider. I like them bc they build webs around my chicken and livestock pins to catch flies.
this isn't the logic. these spiders pose no harm to humans. that does not mean they pose no harm to other insects and spiders in the region. if a species is introduced somewhere, and doing so makes competition/predators for native species of insects/animals, the introduced species is invasive.
I was a spider gambler when I was a kid, of all the spiders I've seen. This particular one is the most useless and harmless kind. I have many of these around our house back then and people just ignore it doesnt even matter how big their web is. It's just plain useless, I've tried poking it with a stick or making it fight each other but they dont. I love watching them in their web during rainy days.
