G80 lockers only activate when you get wheel spin. Try turning one tire forward really quickly if it has a g80 then you’ll head a snap and your tires will lock

This is my favorite video series on TH-cam right now (or the abandoned mansion). I will admit, I'm a huge GMT400 fan so seeing this go together is very interesting.

Those big heavy doors are famous for dropping, I have a bar (homemade) to lock around the latch pin, and hooks in the latch mechanism allows you to pull it back up were it belongs . . Love these bodystlye Chevy. Im still amazed the cab corners are solid thats something u never see. Can't wait to see this beauty done...
That 454 is likely a GM service replacement. The aluminum valve covers without 454 emblem, the manifolds with the slits and the driver side manifold mounted oxygen sensor. It was very common for the TBI 454 motors to have the cam go flat and they were commonly replaced. You can decode the Julian date on the block back by the head.
The rear end G80 will only rotate both tires when it is in the locked position - the two tires need 200-300 difference in RPM in order for it to lock. Put the truck in neutral, have one person hold a tire and spin the other one as fast as you can. You should be able to get it to lock. You can also take the VIN to a dealer and they can decode the RPO (regular production options) for you and will be able to tell you the gear ratio and if it had a locker, among other things.
The difference in the door is due to interior changes - the burgundy door you installed is from a 95 and new GMT400. The inside stamping is different, and the exterior handle is different as well.

GM small-block and big blocks along with DIESELS are the BEST as interchangeability of parts as well as they last the longest.

My TBI 350 was running rough at 177,000 miles. It was a worn out distributer. Got over 200,000 now.
Mine has around 233 but the odometer stopped working like ten years... who knows lol
This is going to be a nice, hard working truck when finished.
Scottsdale was my favorite trim package (back when the trim levels had names).

David is a good man. G80 doesn't kickin until you spin some, my Yukon will do that also but if you have second person grab the other side and spin back you can get it to click in.
GM wasn't big on cab lights were they.

8:12 That doesn't work for the G80. The G80 is a regular open diff until the difference in wheel speed is greater than (some threshold that I don't remember). What you need to do is jack up the rear end and have someone hold one wheel (lightly but firmly) while the other person gives it a little bit of throttle. You could also shove a doorstop under one wheel or something like that. I didn't think my Trailblazer had a G80 in it for over a year after I bought it, but turns out it for sure does!

I'm not one to disagree with David, but the g80 will operate like a open diff when its up on jack stands. My 2 silverados did this same thing and they both had g80's
Not quite. It will be the same when turned slowly. If you spin it slowly then jerk the wheel the other side will lock and kick back. Or if you hold one side you can get it to lock.
@@robb1165 they are fully open when unlocked, the have a set of clutch packs like a limited slip with a ramped gear, so once the wheel speed difference is enough it locks and the ramped portion moves to press the clutches together.
@@davidmcdowell7791 That is why you can lock them when doing a test on the jack stands by suddenly increasing the rotation speed.
@@robb1165 I believe it’s 100 rpm difference causes the lock to occur.
I would get new weatherstripping for the whole truck. You can go to a pull-a-part junkyard, pull your own weatherstripping that’s in good condition off of a truck, and only pay $20-$30. I got a complete set of weatherstripping for my 04’ Cherokee for $20.

My '94 Olds Bravada has the "G80" RPO code but the original window sticker calls it "Posi-traction." Both wheels pull all the time regardless of traction so the code could vary more than the newer G80 code we all know.

When you spin a g80 equipped rear wheel, the other wheel will spin in the opposite direction, unless you spin it fast enough, then it will suddenly lock
I believe there was a design change on the doors after 94 and that's why the inner door panel didn't fit but other than that I can't wait to see how this truck turns out
Yup, after 95 the doors changed to accommodate the new interior.
Had a 97 1500 6ft bed with the 6 cylinder engine used it to mow grass with for my buisness was slow compared to my 04 f250 but I liked it never left me stranded.

Don't quote me, but I'm 99% sure that after 1990-ish all the 454s got the "styled" aluminium valve covers, and not all of them said "454 BY TONAWANDA".

Motor and trans in those trucks are just about bullet proof
If you have a G80 you have to spin by hand the tire like you did but faster 100rpm difference to activate the locker. If you do have a G80 the wheels will lock for a second when spun fast enough. I know this I own a 2018 Chevy with G80 and I spun one rear tire increasing momentum getting it faster and faster and the wheels lock for a second and the tire stops immediately.
Seeing this old truck getting brought back to its former glory is awesome!
There's an Afrikaans saying that says " 'n Boer maak n plan" which translates to a Farmer can always make a plan/work it out, this is very true here..

The posi test is true for a posi limited slip clutch pack. The G80 is a locker. Jack one wheel up in the air and put the truck in neutral spin the wheel as fast as you can it should lock and kick your hand back. You can also jack one tire up and spin the RPM slowl in drive with the engine on and you will feel it kick in - just be ready to hit the brakes!

Not that this is a Z71 package but Chevy's that have the Z71 package have came with skid plates, G80 Locker and rancho shocks. I have had several vehicles with a G80 Locker and have had nothing but good luck with them. My stock 99 sierra has one and made it through 14 miles of trails last winter in 2 wheel drive when a stock TJ wrangler had to be put in 4 wheel drive several times that day. Makes a world of difference in traction.
When you showed the rpo code sticker, it has the code L19 which is the factory tbi 454 code from back then. I have a 93 1 ton that is the exact same way with the exact same code
paint the rims the original silver. You have a gorgeous specimen there sir. I have a 96 like that. I have had it for a long time, best truck ever made!
My 1996 Chevy s10 4x4 has the RPO code for a G80 locker and I’ve seen from off-roading, especially in the sand that both rear tires do spin, but when I lift the rear off the ground the wheels do spin in opposite directions like an open diff so you should pull the diff cover off to see if someone put one in that 14 bolt. My buddies 2007 z71 4x4 GMC Canyon has the RPO code for a G80 as well and when he lifted his rear off the ground the tires also spun in opposite directions like a open diff would.

My 2001 GMC Jimmy 2 door 4WD has the G80. It's amazing, when it doesn't grenade...

I think the 90’s produced some of the best looking American pickups ever produced. All three manufacturers were really on their game.
Just to let y'all know a G80 is a open diff function. So the simple Jack up and hand spin test won't tell. Now with out rpo code and without pulling the cover. Raise both wheels off the ground. Start engine put vehicle in gear. At idle slow one wheel down. The locker will engage when the difference in wheel speed meets lock up conditions. There's lots of good info out there just look it up. The Old limited slip systems you can tell by the method they used in this video but not G80 style of lockers.
Had a 1990 454ss that the distributer wore out also. The valve covers didnt say anything. Also had the locker in rear.

Rough running engine could be distributor, EGR valve, the o2 sensors, cam shaft, timing issues, spark plugs, vacuum leaks. At least thats what i always start with.

Eaton G80 (grenade 80) has a pawl that activates when the rear wheels feel either 150 or 200 rpm difference from one another which activates the pawl engaging both wheels granting you limited slip. They call them grenade 80's because when the pael engaged they sometimes explode. So Powderkeg is a fitting name. 🤣
Lol they only explode when some kid does burnouts in the high school parking lot. If you don’t do stupid stuff like that they’ll last forever

Does the exhaust manifold on the other side have the split between the ports? If not then maybe the driver side manifold was replaced because of a likely crack with a later updated one. Check part numbers.

Or they just replaced the exhaust manifolds with aftermarket. The driver's side had a bung and they didn't find anything better to fill the hole with than a random O2 sensor. I think it's M18x1.5 and I think lots of things fit possibly including a spark plug. Or get a proper plug.
For the valve cover...who knows, could just be replacement valve covers, too.
The bodies on this generation was a big deal in weight saving . I think the dimensions changed over the long lasting previous gen..
My MGB would have reduced slip if it was really cold. The transmission was difficult to shift too.
How plentiful are GMT400s in salvage yards there? Would a replacement bench (or buckets) be cheaper/easier than recovering the original bench?

That test might work on limited slip, but not on a locker.
I got an 88 chevy k1500 with the same driver's door problem
Finally someone returning a truck to it's original condition.
Go back and spin that wheel faster in the air because the g80 needs one wheel spinning a certain speed faster than the other to engage. Its not a true limited slip.
I agree the test wasn’t done right, but if it doesn’t have the rpo code it probably doesn’t have a locker
By the way my truck had that same exhaust same bolt pattern and it had two temperature sensors I would like to know more if you're finding exhaust sensor
