- In this week’s episode I have a finished sweater to share with you and I think that its not only going to melt your heart but its also going to make you want to cast one on right now, and the best part? It’s a free pattern. Next we are going to talk about casting on some kids sweaters, if you don’t have little ones in your life don’t fret these patterns come in adult sizes and they are cute. I am going to share my failings on an abounded cast on, and fill you in on some future cast ons and plans for this year’ s autumn fall season.

Completely agree with designers listing the amount needed in grams. Did they use the entire 200 grams or only 175? Also when designers don't put any information on the Ravelry page (I want to know if the yarn I have is going to work for the project before buying the pattern), when they list a letter size (xs-xxl) and not the finished dimensions, and when the pattern comes in English but the Ravelry page is another language.

In case this helps: suppose the pattern says you need 300 g sandnes Sunday. A search on the website tells you a ball has 235 m per 50 g. 6 balls (300g) x 235 = 1410 metres. See meterage on the yarn you want to use (let's say 210 metres per 50 g). You divide 1410 (metres from the pattern for your size) by 210 (meterage per ball on your yarn). You need 6.71 balls (50g balls) so 7 to be on the safe side. It's still an approximation, but should give you an idea.
This is the maths, but it's nice when patterns say something like 'or if using another yarn you require x metres in x weight of yarn'. Lots of smaller designers manage to do it, including in some free patterns. I can work it out myself if needed but when I'm paying for a pattern it rubs me up the wrong way when they could have done that one step for you. Most people aren't going to use thenexact yarn the designer used.
The amount of handholding knitters these days need is mind boggling. I'm so glad my formative knitting years happened before the advent of the internet. I learned by doing and trying different things and figuring it out and now nothing knitting related can scare me. Not a thing.
I honestly feel sorry for these folks who are in over their heads just trying to do the math for yarn requirements smh
@@MelusineWinter While I agree with you about the amount of handholding people need these days, I also agree with the person above you. The pattern designer needs to take into account that people will not always use the recommended yarn, and so as a matter of course (especially with paying patterns) equivalent yardage should be included.
It is fascinating that yarn amount given in grams instead of meters since you have to calculate number of skeins when using a different yarn than the pattern anyway.
I have to totally agree with the frustration for patterns that only list number of skeins of yarn used. Like, you said, I get it... but for me I don't want to have to research a yarn, find the yardage and try to compare to the yarn I plan to use... I could go on, but you seem to understand 😅
Also I loved the show Unreal, awesome cast, the drama is so juicy and I will say it definitely sparked my interest in reality tv for a while. I never hear people mention, but I would definitely recommend it.
I don’t think not listing the yards needed has anything to to with the Sandnes Garn affiliation, it’s a cultural thing. It’s simply not common in Skandinavia to list yards needed, patterns always list expected yarn use in grams. I’ve knitted for 30 years (mainly Norwegian and Danish patterns), and I’ve never in my life calculated yarn use by meters/yards for a single project 😂
KAT thank you for this it was my suspicion that it might be the case. I love her patterns many I have knit multiple times, I think I’m good at approximating yardage but sometimes wish I knew more exact amounts so I can use left over yarn, I love hearing that you’ve never calculated meters it made me smile , I love seeing all the different ways we approach patterns and knits thanks for being here 🖤

I totally agree about the PK frustration. Especially for example when it says 200g. Does that mean you used all of 4 balls or only a small amount of the 4th, pretty annoying. I do love all of her adult sweaters I just wish the smallest size in her patterns were smaller, I personally don’t waring something with that amount of positive ease and most of those are textured and don’t have it in me to re-math it
Maureen that is frustrating! I might have some good news for you as I purchased both the Lyon junior sweater and the Lyon sweater and I think you could use the junior pattern for a smaller bust circumference and check the length of arms and body if you need to lengthen those that should be an easy modification

I recently emailed a German designer with a question about yardage for one of her patterns, which only listed the number of skeins of the yarn it was designed in. She replied within a few hours, and the next day I noticed that she had edited the pattern details on Ravelry to add the estimated yards/meters for each size. I almost didn’t purchase that pattern because I didn’t think I would have enough yarn.
I wonder if Petite Knit also has this information readily available and would provide it upon request.

I 100% agree that it is annoying when designers just list grams! I am doing enough math already when I am standing in the yarn store.

As a norwegian knitter I think math is the sacrifice you gave to make when using a different yarn than the pattern. All Scandinavian patterns the amount is given in grams or balls. It also expected that everybody working in a yarnshop is completely comfortable with doing the math to change yarn
Intersting as every Petiteknits pattern I have purchased indicated the yarn weight in grams yes, but always gives the yardage per 50 gram ball. Not sure what this issue is for you
Check on Ravelry how many yards are in the yarn PK uses. Then you will not have so much math.

Frog it. By the time you would finish it After you finish the kids sweaters....you are going to want full length sleeves. You have a habit of holding your cuffs in your palms so if you mske it go with long sleeves. I do like that orangey color for you. I dont watch fsshiin shows but I think the idea of a video that shows how designers are using knitwear always sounds good. I am SLOWly working on my "No Limits" but I've been under the weather a few weeks and it looks like it will be another few weeks til I can get some real work done on it. I'm just too tired to pick anything up so the videos have been a comfort. Thanks.
