The fact that the chain chomp ultimately helps you in SM64 and in Link’s Awakening cemented them as cute in my imagination. The puppy chomps and momma chomp just being a pianta’s naughty, dirty pets in Super Mario Sunshine also makes them cute.

Never once did I think that someone could be scared of a chain chomp.
For a doc about Chain Chomps, surprised there was no mention of Link's Awakening. You actually walk the chain chomp in that game driving home the dog theme a little clearer than their SMB3 appearance.

Fun Fact: something similar happened to me.... but the dog broke off it's chain. I was walking on the sidewalk in my neighborhood, this ferocious dog was barking loudly at me and I did have a dreadful feeling that it might come off it's chain. Then a couple seconds later, it did and came towards me. Then, the owner came outside and told me not to move.... and either because I was retarded or I figured he knew his dog better than me, I stood almost perfectly still and sweating in fear.
