I think The racoon leaf and tanooki suit are two different powerups in super mario bros 3. The one you show footage of, the more common racoon leaf only gives you a spin attack and flight, where as the tanooki suit is much rarer, and in addition to the powers of the racoon leaf allows you to down+B to turn into a statue and avoid damage for a couple of seconds
Fun Fact: something similar happened to me.... but the dog broke off it's chain. I was walking on the sidewalk in my neighborhood, this ferocious dog was barking loudly at me and I did have a dreadful feeling that it might come off it's chain. Then a couple seconds later, it did and came towards me. Then, the owner came outside and told me not to move.... and either because I was retarded or I figured he knew his dog better than me, I stood almost perfectly still and sweating in fear. I thought I was about to fucking be torn apart. Thankfully though, the dog eventually got bored I guess and ran off. It's interesting how me and Miyamoto of all people shared such a similar experience, but trust me: I wish I didn't. In fact, I wouldn't wish that kind of psychological scar on anyone.
haha, I definitely see what you mean! On TH-cam right now, videos seem to perform much better if they're around 15 minutes or so. Some people reach that by telling a story really slowly, but I figured I should just add a bunch of extra information instead. That way I'm not wasting people's time!
Yeah, I have to second this. At first was rolling my eyes expecting you to somehow pad the video out despite giving us an explanation in the first four minutes but I'm really pleasantly surprised to see that I got what the title and thumbnail dragged me in for and way more.
still easy to guess its origin, personally i asociated it right, because the types of dogs are often mentioned and/or parodied, for example in movies or general narratives about dogs (i'm from germany maybe this is different at other country)
Haha yeah, but a dog about to bite you is scary non the less. I've had dogs hurt me countless times in the past and developed a bit of a phobia of them. I still find dogs adorable, but if one is loose or barking at me I panic and might cry. Kids are easier to traumatize and sharp teeth lunging at you...are well sharp teeth.
I grew up seeing a bit of the Mario cartoons, so when I heard the actual names of the koopalings I was really confused, I could've sworn Wendy was name Kootie Pie and that one of the blue haired ones was named Kooky.
13:56 Given that the English/US names were likely chosen late in the game's dev cycle, and that an animated film series (especially back then) is a long production process, it could well be that the the names for the animated series were already baked-in by the time the game was released. You'd have to find out what was initiated as a project in what order to be sure.
For a doc about Chain Chomps, surprised there was no mention of Link's Awakening. You actually walk the chain chomp in that game driving home the dog theme a little clearer than their SMB3 appearance. Also the SMB3 manual stated that the Koopalings are Bowser's kids, but then gets redacted years later.

The one you show footage of, the more common racoon leaf only gives you a spin attack and flight, where as the tanooki suit is much rarer, and in addition to the powers of the racoon leaf allows you to down+B to turn into a statue and avoid damage for a couple of seconds
They’re inspired by the same thing, and I think that’s what he wanted to get across.
You can use the statue to stomp certain enemies
Great work, once again Big T! I had no idea all the Koopa Kid's names were all from one guy. What an amazing opportunity for Brooks!
Lol, i just saw it in the video

Bye bye baby blue, good punch out joke!
yeah, hippos are some of the most dangerous animals to humans
Because Miyamoto got scared as a child by a dog and the dog got pulled back by the chain.
There you go
Metal Mario 64 -Saul lmao I bet he is being waaayyy more over dramatic then he needs to be XD
Seriously thank you.
@@UBvtuber Well at least you get to make your own Mario enemy now! What is the name?

I find it crazy how the people at Nintendo take so many real life events of hobbies and turn them in to games. It’s crazy how creative they are
"Today lets talk about the chain chomp origin... Also the hole design process of mario 3" (good video btw)
haha, I definitely see what you mean!
“For Larry, there was no real life inspiration. Brooks just thought that he looked like a Larry.”
*sad larry noises*
Larry King: (walks away)
It's very easy:
The german name is "Kettenhund" (Ketten = Chain; Hund = Dog) and a dog barks, simple.
oh man, i have wondered why they don't know that these things are dogs.
@Chef oiL Ich bin Schweizer, darum auch mein Spitzname auf You-Tube "Swiss Cheese"
But its german name isent it's original name
still easy to guess its origin, personally i asociated it right, because the types of dogs are often mentioned and/or parodied, for example in movies or general narratives about dogs (i'm from germany maybe this is different at other country)
i like to think the koopa's cartoon names are a phase they went through as young kids
I don't know what you're talking about, man. Hippos are absolutely intimidating.
For real. They are insane
@@-Twotonepony-
This guy gets it
There jaw's are REALLY powerful so yea they are pretty intimidating
They aren’t carnivores. Plus just put some poison in it’s mouth jk. But they can KILL
@@melissaardon2294 It's exactly that they aren't carnivores that proves hippos are evil. They don't kill to survive. They kill because they want to.
"A dog barked at him" seems like a mildly traumatic event.
It was trying to straight up attack him and was only stopped by its leash being secured. (At least according to the story)

I would just assume that someone had a really weird looking dog at home.

You'd have to find out what was initiated as a project in what order to be sure.
or they changed the names because they just wanted to.
Maybe rename this video to something like "Origins of iconic Mario 3 Enemies" idk
Ok, this is -the best- my personal favorite video game history channel on TH-cam.

What about the gaming historian.
“He just looked like a Larry” I agree
"A more literal translation would be calling the enemy a 'woof woof'"

to be honest i never really thought of the barking too much, since i grew up with the german name "kettenhund" which literally means chain-dog. so i always thought that it barks because its a chaindog

Are you telling me people in Japan are walking around thinking dogs go "wan wan"?
If you think that's weird, the sound a baby chick makes in Spanish is "pio pio".
It doesn't sound like bark bark either.
@@metaltom2003 Swedish chickens say pip pip.
In germany we itz wau wau or wuff wuff
In Japan, a dog whimpering sounds like, "Kyuun kyuun" and cats go, "nyan nyan"... Apparently.
I remember when I was a little kid, I called Chain Chomp “doggy”. And Link’s Awakening only added to my reasoning.😆
