I had to join the army when I was a young man.because I failed the entrance test for the Air Force . I still got my chance to fly in airplanes. Ended up in the parachute regiment.🇬🇧best job I’ve ever had.

This needs renaming to "5 reasons why you will find army life difficult". I served 24 years in the UK Armed Forces from age 16 and entered with minimum qualifictions. I left with a Bachelors Degree in Technology, vast amount of experience, a second language studied at first year university level, and a handsome lump sum of cash with a pension at 40 years of age that just keeps going on (Kerching!!). Not to mention friends who I keep in touch with and meet up with now and again. Why did this happen? .......Opportunity and a nurtured competitive spirit. My neighbour from childhood days is now a UK Immigration legal officer and he joined the Police, then Army and was probably one of the first black cadets in both forces all those years ago. He lives in his crib in London and has made it becasue of ability and again opportunity. If you honestly think you can do better than what's going on at the moment, then join the UK Armed Forces.

Just about to complete 37 years in the British Army. Don't listen to whatever anyone says. Form your own opinion, be respectful and don't expect respect, earn it through your deeds. It's not for everyone and I can honestly say I have never encountered racism. Bullying I have encountered first hand when I was much younger, but it's not tolerated and help is always available. The vast majority of my Brother and Sister servicemen and women do not, I repeat WILL NOT stand for any form of bullying. Give it a go if your thinking about it... it's a great life for those who embrace it.

Man, if I could go back in time and join at 18 I would. I never knew what I wanted to do I did have a interest in the military. But at the time, women weren't allowed to be 'soliders' however, they were allowed in the army but it wasn't role's I was interested in and couldn't afford to give up my job at the time but something I may or may not have got accepted for. Now I'm a 30 single parent with a small child so will never have the chance, my son and his needs will always come first. But as I said, if I could go back, join at 18 and then have my son now to say I've done it, that would've been great 😂 but oh well, plod on I guess 😂

Some great advice there. Had to smile about the one about gambling. On a troop/equipment train to Soltau, three of the men in my compartment were looking for a fourth man to play poker. I could not play poker. Come on they said, "it's easy, we'll teach you." I was over the moon winning most of the first games. Then it happened. They took most of my money. Never again.

Just giggling watching this.. I joined at 15.. we had racism, but no drugs no gambling and if you didn't work at getting fitter stronger etc you where in a world of pain. We got paid £10 a week £5 of which was held back for saving and kit and what money was left some had to go to the section Corporal who when pissed demanded money for more drink.
So it wasn't your fellow recruits you had to look out for but the bloody training staff lol

Then you could join at 15 which was the school leaving age. Trust me a lot has changed in the army, then it was normal to get a DMS boot in the ribs from an instructor, I have seen corporals kick recruits so hard they lost teeth. If you where Scottish you where called a jock bastard, Irish a paddy bastard Welsh a taff bastard. We where standing by our beds as usual, lockers open for inspection by one of the Officers. He asked me if I was a right footer? I said yes Sir. He said good i don't like left footers .. I thought this guy takes his football seriously. A few boys down the line he asked a Scottish soldier the same question, left footer Sir. He kneed him in his balls and as he lay on the ground writhing in pain he said I don't like left footers.. I only found out later a left footer was a catholic lol.
In those days you joined your Jnr Regiment and mine was an elite one so you trained and where treated as a man.
Good luck and don't worry things like that don't happen now, but work hard, don't stand out for all the wrong reasons, never steal, lie or cheat because you will be found out! But it's a great life and well worth doing. One other thing, keep your mouth shut and your ears open.

Trust me there are many more, but don't want to bore or scare you. But I will say how tough our physical training was, just to give you an idea. Every morning we would go for a 5 Mile run, during the runs we had to run over the top of an old WW2 bridge, made more difficult by the corporals jumping up and down on the middle beams, it was called confidence training but it did little for my confidence lol. Then bunny hops and carrying another soldier on your back. Then after breakfast into the gym where you where put through press ups, rope climbs, weight training etc oh and one little treat.. you would ly down in a row, the first soldier in the line would then run over each soldiers stomach. Then weapon training etc etc. You lost weight gained muscle and died each time you got into your pit (bed) Yes it was very tough and it was not much easier when on you joined adult service. ( I transferred to a different corps so had to go basic training again Groan) We had one Corporal who would lift you by your ears.. trust me it's painful. Our escape and evasion exercises had one get motivator, if you got caught you got a kicking lol I made sure of my skills and never got caught lol.
Yes the army IS different but if I could do it again I would

I was posted to RAF Gatow once for a few weeks. I had came back from a tour of NI ( Op Banner) the day before so when I walked into the RAF canteen dressed in a combat smock, flying trousers complete with knife and flying boots everyone stopped eating and looked at me. It was a sea of grey uniforms lol. But I have to say the RAF meals, accommodation etc was far superior to the army. They also had 6 bars on camp ( though I got barred from 5 of them lol)

I joined at 15 in 1961 ... £1 10shillings - we had to pay a shilling "barrack damages" and set aside some of the princely sum to "credits" (savings) for when we went on leave. Passed out into the regulars 17 and a half and got a massive £6 a week.... it was great only Aden was kicking off so all the rest of the world was peacekeeping until 1969 and then flaming Ireland. I was lucky and had a real "Soldier of the Sixties" experience.

That was a succinct and relatable presentation. My only criticism: the omission of personal fitness, PRIOR to joining. I served in the 80s and it was made clear, at selection, that running was key. Four months prior to joining, I worked up to running 4 miles to work, each day (the final 2 months in army boots I'd acquired); this (for me) took the shock out of the initial weeks of PT. Happy Days :)

    • @paganphil100
      @paganphil100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Daniel WOODRUFFE: I suppose it depends on which branch of the army you want to join. If you plan to join the infantry, especially elite units like the paras or marines, then physical fitness will be more important than some other qualities (for example, technical and / or mechanical skills).......however all soldiers will need to have a minimum fitness level so the more you have, the better it will be for you.

I came into the army with a great attitude, following every instruction, lisrening to my superiors. I actually enjoyed phase 1 and two training, and ny first year in the army was epic. Then one day, I met a warrant officer, or two, who were absolute dickheads with their ranks and called themselves, "old school" as an excuse to bully and treat others below them with they type of disrespect you wouldn't even inflict on your worst enemy.
Since then I have a very hard time taking things with a pinch of salt and have developed a very defensive attitude that's really not easy to break. I've been in and out of the med centre with mental health issues, I have a difficult time keeping relationships healthy, I struggle to sleep sometimes. This has been going on for years. So yeah, cheers for that British Army.

My 5 reasons not till join the Army.
    1. Your going till face prosecution by the government for doing yer job 20-40 years down the line (Northern Ireland veterans an some Iraq veterans is under this process)
    2. The government will leave ye on the streets homeless an place so called "refugees" in social housing an benefits before ye.
    3. Having the slightest right wing political stance ye will be deemed till be "racist, sexist or homophobic" even if ye condemn these things.
    4. Being demonized by the recruitment adverts these past few years by getting the weak till join up.
    5. Physical fitness tests have been dumbed down till the point were the fat, lazy an the slow can join taking from the army's new fitness tests for phase 1.
I am 18 an I wanted till join but the recent events especially this past year or so has completely put me off. Don't get me wrong but I do support an love our troops no matter if they are Army, Navy or Air Force but this is pathetic, being a Northern Irish lad the prosecution of NI vet's has sickened me after defending our people frea IRA murders.

HellHound93 Are you white? I strongly assume and certain that you are as whites just love to claim that racism is over despite the fact that they have not and never will experience it in a predominantly white society! White love to speak on behalf of blacks and tell them and others that there is no racism, it’s just absurd and ironic!
If you think that racism = racial slurs/ insults then you are extremely uneducated, narrow minded and naive and are part of the problem. Modern day racism is different from racist insults! And there is plenty of modern day racism in the Army, the only thing that changed is that it is not openly done anymore and it is harder to detect.
One example for modern day racial discrimination is that Commonwealth (predominantly non whites!) recruits are not allowed to choose from all the job roles available; they then pick one of the shit roles available to them and then when they turn up for assessment /BT the white man tells them they cannot get their chosen role and either wait (which for mist is not an option which the white nan knows) or go to infantry ( where the Army lacks numbers and need to stock up). Whilst their fellow white applicants from UK ain’t limited and also get the role they applied for - funny huh, that’s not racism or racial discrimination to you??? I definitely agree with you on racism, the gambling habits, and drug usage. Any of those three and that individual needs to go packing, like yesterday.
As far as training and attitudes, I think those are things that someone one going in can adjust over time, simply because of the fact that they’ll be almost forced to. Of course nothing ever applies to everyone (so there are out lyres). But, I believe (for the most part) people going into the military are already somewhat prone to want a challenge. So, I think that if you are going in and may have an attitude or training problem that is something that can be addressed and fixed. Just a thought.

Re apply, go to your doctors. And ask them to Wright you a letter. Saying it was not depression but anxiety. Big big diffrance and it was due to lack of work that got you down, and Bill's goin out etc. And if you dont want to do that. Apply again and when asked if you previously applied or are ex forces the answere is nope. Give a diffrent addres to previous. And when asked if you have suffered with depression the answere is again you guessed a big nope. Now it's up to capita to check your back ground out. They dont check every single person. Everyone has a bit of anxiety now and then. The doctors just put it down as depression on papers and it ruines youngsters lives. Society has bread anxiety the government need to get a grip of this and realise what its created. As its ruining youngsters lives. If people dont get help then they suffer. And because they get help they suffer again when they want a job in the millitery. They created the name ADHD, in my day I was a twat was doped up in medication for being a twat. It's simply not fair. So why not bend rules. What. Are they goin to do, send you to prison because you want to serve your country. Bend the rules mate think about your self life is a game you be player number 1.

I've suffered for three years with severe "mjental health" issues. Severe scarification and self harm. For the most part recently, I have been training, reading, training, reading and valuing my self and my potential. However; my biggest fear is that when I do decide to move forward into the army to develop all the skills (combative and non combative) that they teach you, that they will decline by application. Is there a general way of judging those with such history, or do they judge you on the merit of your character and how many years you have been devoid of any self harm?

@@liverpoolscottish6430 A lot, lot better of course these days. And I think the growth of aforementioned "illnesses" may and underlining MAY have had something to do with leading a very restricted life in some senses. It's not stressful situations that led me to harm, anyway. It was never caused by an unfocussed, hysterical state. A very different kind of self harm. But it's irrelevant now as I'm moving forward with each sunrise.
