Full disclosure: Thinkcar sent me this demonstration unit and pays a commission on sales.
This is my first impression and review of the all-new Thinkscan 689BT. It was just released and you get the first look at it.

Great video Steve and I love the lifetime updates. That is unheard of. Thank you for sharing. I think I may have to look into one of those.
Heck yeah! Thanks Tony.
Just bought one based on this review and the code still worked!
@@ColeTrickle_51 nice!
I bought the Toyota specific Launch X431 Elite and im pretty sure it has free lifetime updates. Either way, a Bluetooth scan tool with free updates is still great news.
You’re right, it is lifetime. I should’ve said the Thinkscan is the first all makes scanner with lifetime updates.
@@ToolDemos nitro scan tool by xtool has 3 models that are lifetime updates and have been out for over 5 yrs now. It’s probably not well known because it is only sold through authorized distributors and cost $800 for the lowest model to $1700 for the highest model.
I bought the same Launch x431 Elite for Honda/Acura. I programmed a smart-key for a 2012 Acura TL… I was sold for life!
@MrSamPhoenix yeah, I've tinkered around with the tool a bit more, and the key programming function alone is worth the $129 that the scanner costs. It also gives you access to all customization features and atf temp range. Great little scan tool.
Amazon listing shows 2 years free update. Most of them I see 2 years free. Then expensive for each year after that. Still deciding on one???
3:53 unrelated, but the 🐕 🌬 had me cracking up the tool looks interesting. I'd like to try one out myself. it looks like a winner!
Heck yeah! Our son bought me that shirt, it’s awesome.
I have Thinkcar reported to FTC & state attorney general. It is a Chinese company with a office in Ontario, CA. The problem with their products is data collection & transfer back to China. These things can collect & store tons of data & is there any risk since private transportation is back bone for America economy. I am not saying that this product is bad, but just needs scrutiny.
I’m interested to find out what they determine. As far as mine is concerned, I never signed up with an account, never gave any of my information. I just turned it on and it works.
@@ToolDemos Was it ever connected to WIFI & if it did, how much of data was transferred & to what IP addresses. What DNS were used & all the IP addresses used are traceable. All this data can be part of 21st century intelligence where AI can make sense of all the meta data collected!
You’ll be shocked that a lot of the Android smartphones from the same country pretty much do the same thing. But we’ve been using them for years. They’ve definitely collected a lot info already.
Cool scanner, even cooler t-shirt!
Haha thanks! Our son gave it to me.
If you go to setting's, screen off time, you can remove customer icon off screen.
@@101boily thanks 👍
Thanks - code still works
Glad to hear it!
Got mine about a week ago, Love it. There is a way to take that icon off in the settings (the one that bugs you) :D
Right on, thanks!
Thanks, found it in "settings"-"universal" -then turn off "customer service center"
Very nice..🔥
Thank you! Cheers!
Hello there,
I have checked a couple of video reviews including yours in order to corroborate if the 689bt has the car battery status in the notification bar and apparently it doesn't have that feature as the 689 wire version does have.
Yeah, it’s one of the main things that person needs when working on a vehicles with a scantool. And from what I hear they’ll push out an update to include this feature.
@MrSamPhoenix the company has released two system updates that made things even worse, when you receive an update for any brand the system deletes the version you had installed and doesn't tell you which is the new version of the brand. I haven't found a way to eliminate a brand installed that I don't need.
They haven't add the car's voltage status in the notification bar.
Great video! I do have a concern though. Other reviewers have reviewed other scan tools that can also be found on Amazon, and have noted that those manufacturers don't necessarily sell the tools they bought or are reviewing on Amazon/EBay within the US/North American market. As a result, those tools don't necessarily get along very well with domestic vehicles when it comes to bi-directional control. Have you had any such issues with American vehicles with this tool? I may comment on another video you've posted with this specific question, directed at that specific product, but for now, I'm interested in your experiences with domestic vehicles, bi-directional controls, and the 689BT. Thanks!
I’ve heard about this problem. I haven’t experienced it yet with this tool or any of the others that I’ve tested. I’m not sure if it’s because they got it from a bad seller or if they made a mistake. It could be that they either didn’t update the tool or chose the wrong manufacturer. For some car makes you can choose USA Europe, or Asia.
I have a 2012 Jeep Compass with a failed ABS Module (DTC C2200). Does anyone know if the 689 scan tool will be able to initialize the ABS module/complete the required drive cycle? Thanks for the video.
@@maverickmikekauai3515 their coverage info says there is an ABS reset function, not sure if that’s it or not.
Hi, I would like to know if ECU can be flashed? Supported?😊
This won’t do flash programming, but it will do PMIs on certain modules.
Will this scanner work on a 2016 Ram 1500 4WD? I dont see "Ram" in its coverage but see Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep. Ram seems to be it own category now when looking up parts.
Yes it will, you’ll find it under Dodge still.
Hello, I would like to know if it works in key programming? It is not written in the coverage on the thinkcar website.
Yes it does, on certain cars. Toyota is a good example, I looked up a 2013 Highlander and it will do: all keys lost, transponder code erase, remote match, and key registration. Not all makes give you this much access.
Will it provide the immobilizer pin on those certain models?
@@mattmew4299 I haven’t tried yet, but if you look at new NASTF rules - it’s probably going away. They want to restrict all immobilizer work to people who have locksmith credentials.
Cabin methane detection sensors front & rear....
Wife: “Honey, why is the cabin methane detector beeping?”
Me: “It was the dog!”
So can this tool replace the required MDI2 that needs to be used on GM/ACDelco in order for the crappy ACDelco software to comm with the BCM and other modules???
Yeah, it can do about 90%. Reprogramming, you will still need MDI2 or some other J2534 device.
Can this do the cylinder compression test you did on the Ford and graphing of each cylinder to show firing issues? Appreciate your time with these videos.
Yes, this scanner can do that. Thanks
Is this compatible with suzuki vitara 2018, 1.6L gasoline? I bought a foxwell GT60 which says compatible with suzuki vehicles but eventually cannot detect its VIN automatically.
@ I’m afraid I’m running into the same issue. It says that it can, but I don’t have a Suzuki around here to verify.
Do some scanners bleed only front brakes ? Or both ?
@@Richard5873 scanners bleed ABS systems. Those ABS systems control front and rear brakes. But if you need to bleed a brake caliper, that’s still done by hand.
A few things that bother me about this scantool.
1. It doesn’t show the car battery voltage on the top of the screen when working on cars like the wired version.
2. It definitely costs above $500 (about $625 before coupons).
Fair
@ToolDemos Quid Pro Quo to turn off orange customer service ball go to settings /universal /bottom slider to off "customer service center" i need help finding transmission fluid temp. if you have seen this setting please post thanks ..... or maybe ill just turn on customer service ball and ask 🤔
Thanks. On Toyota, it should be listed under engine live data. I’ll check when I get back, but I think that’s right. You’ll want AT Temp A.
@ToolDemos found it thank you I used your coupon code and used it on the manufacturer website plus their $100 rebate got the whole thing for about $470 with free shipping Good deal
@ that’s a great deal. I’m glad you found the data pid.
Hello
I was thinking to buy the thickcar 689bt and i just would like to know if they have updated the device to see the car battery on the status bar
@@elliebalid9005 no. Only on the corded version.
What auction allowed you to bring in your scanner and where??
That auction happened to be a county government auction. But if you go to dealer’s auctions, they’ll let you scan their cars also.
@ thanks for the reply. To my knowledge not all dealer auctions allow you to bring in a scanner.
@ oh, that sucks!
Is this there most new version? IF not whats the next level up one ? Will this work on a 2001 Excursion V10? Curious if it will reset timing? On my V10 will it tell if I have an injector issue or spark plug issue for my slight misfire?
Yes, this tool was introduced earlier this year. The Expert 195 is a step up. I’m not sure what you mean by reset timing, but it will perform a lot of functions on your Ford excursion. Here is a great starter video that will explain what you can expect a scanner like this to do and what it won’t do. th-cam.com/video/FKX6IcbhOyA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5IyJ_4RwLspFdfHD
@ToolDemos Thanks a Million
Expert 195 could not find it on their website, tried chatting with someone, that didn't go very well.
@ the Expert will be found on their other website thinkcar.com . It’s tailored more towards professional users.
Is the bidirectional functions free?
Yes everything is included and ready to go out of the box.
What happens if there is a break in the BT connection while in the middle of coding?
I see they also offer a wired version. Thanks
Good question. My guess is that you’d have to start over again.
Swipe down the screen then toggle off the cust serv icon.
Thanks. I needed that.
What years does it cover
It depends on make/model, but I searched Toyota Camry. It has every year from 1998 'till 2024
can it change the odometer?
No. At least not on any of the cars I’ve used it on.
Will this do key FOB reprogramming?
It can program some cars to accept your key fob. But it can’t program the actual key itself. On their website, you can scroll down just a little bit and find the coverage section. It will tell you if it can do the programming on your car.
where can I get this for under $500.00? The price I could see was over $700.00. Please let me know. thanks
@@dveloso150 they were offering a special discount when it first was released. I guess the price went up since then.
Thanks
Will it program keys
It will learn new keys to your car, or delete keys out. Depends on the car though, some makes don’t allow it.
I checked the coverage on their webpage and unfortunately looks like it doesn’t have any Immobilizer programming capacity at all….confirmed with brands and cars I have programmed keys to even with cheaper scanner and this one doesn’t. Not a deal breaker but something to be informed about.
Three days ago I did an all keys lost on a 2005 Acura MDX. It worked just fine.
It should have that functionality, unless you have a modern European car. Especially since other scantools like the Launch CReader Elite has such features.
@@ToolDemosI think he might be referring to Smart-Keys. But I’m sure it can program those too. Especially Honda/Acura vehicles.
Can this scanner can read the original mileage of the car to know if its tampered or not? Thank you
Yes and no. Some cars only have it recorded in the gauge cluster. So it varies between car models.
would this be able to program a 2012 lexus es350 key ?
Yes, this has key code erasure, initialization, and registration special functions for your ES350
@@ToolDemos thanks for the response
@@ToolDemosbetween this and the Autel MaxiIM IM508S if u have experience with it what would you pick ?
I don’t have experience with the IM508S, but I will say it’s a completely different tool. There are many capabilities on the Autel that you will not find on the Thinkscan. Programming keys, and doing circuit board level (EEPROM) repairs are very powerful abilities, but are out of my league. I don’t have a locksmith ID, which will very soon be a requirement, and I have no interest in repairing circuit boards. If those are things that you will doing, the easy answer is buy the Autel.
EDIT: there is a difference between programming keys and coding a key to your car. Both scanners will code a key to your car, but only the Autel will program the key itself. (if you have a blank key that needs to be programmed.) So it all depends on what car you’re working on.
@@ToolDemos thank you for the response and mainly just programming keys to cars not much more
Lifetime update is only if they issue any updatr for this model. They don't specify any update schedule ot time frame. So if no update available, we dont have to pay...FREE😅😅😅😅
What auctions do you go to? Public? Dealer? And where? I like my autel scanner
That was a public auction. I also like insurance auctions, one day I’ll do dealer auctions. Haven’t used an Autel in a while.
@@ToolDemos I’ve bought a few cars at dealer auctions. Less crowded! I’d like to get back into it! Have to find a good auction in the north east!
I dropped thinkcar for topdon.
Do you like the Topdon better?
Why the music? Why, bro?
Dang it, was it that bad?
I think the music adds a bit of professionalism and nowadays it’s pretty much expected.
I would like to buy a scanner I don't know where here in Mozambique. Does this scanner detect all Japanese cars? Is it in Portuguese?
Yes, it does all Japanese brands. Yes it does have Portuguese.
Does it display battery voltage
No, not at the top of the screen. The wired 689 does do that.
