  • This is a step-by-step tutorial demonstrating how to sew the Pelican Tote by Bagstock Designs. This is a great bag for beginners that will help build your bag making skills. This is a free pattern that can be download from the Bagstock Designs website at: www.bagstockdesigns.com. I have used cork and 100% cotton quilting fabric for the exterior and 100% cotton quilting fabric for the linings along with Wovenfuse 2 and Decovil Light for interfacings. I sew the bag with my Sailrite Fabricator industrial sewing machine, but this bag can be made on a domestic machine depending on the fabrics and interfacings you choose. I have included Timestamps below for each section of the video, so please feel free to skip around. I hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful. Please like and subscribe.

    This is my first time watching your channel but I have definitely subscribed. Thank you so very much for this wonderfully informative video. You are a wonderful teacher. A beginner could follow your instructions and make this bag. I wish I had a machine capable of making this bag. This may sound funny but I love the sound of your sewing machine. There is just something about that particular machine sound that is comforting and relaxing to me. I guess it is from when I started sewing at 13 years old and my sewing machine at that time sounded like yours. Your bag is beautiful. Please take care and stay safe. ~Barbara

    • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind comments! I do understand what you are saying about the sound of the machine. It reminds me of when I started learning how to sew on my mother’s 1950s Singer. I wish I still had her old machine! You can make this bag on a domestic machine depending on the materials your choose.

    I was wondering why the 2 open seams inside the bag. Then when I saw how easy the turning was as you pulled the bag right side out through the larger opening & then close it by pulling it through the zippered pocket opening, you just blew my mind completely! You are so clever!! Thanks for a wonderful video demonstration! Is there a chance you could do a video on adding a recessed zippered top?

    Great tutorial but it should be noted she leaves out the foam sewn in lining; something I wanted but did not notice was missing until it was too late. i was doing an 'experiment ' by not printing out the instructions and only using a tutorial. Lesson learned. Rosie is very talented and an excellent instructor. The bag came out very well and I am proud to give it as the gift for which it was intended.

    I have A little story that you might think is funny. But first thank you for this pattern I think it’s lovely and I will be doing it soon. The story: I was in the shower this evening and I had your video playing in the background. My dog started howling like she didn’t know where I was. I peeked out and scolded her and told her to stop howling and got back in the shower. When I finished, I got out and continued to listen to the video. Just then as I listened I realized my dog wasn’t howling but you were sewing and it was your machine that sounded like a howl only when the shower was running! I had scolded my dog for nothing! Don’t be upset…I just thought it was funny and the joke was on me!

I would like to use faux leather in place of the cork and use that for my handles too, being this is my first time sewing with it, how would I "press" the faux leather, or would you advise just using the cotton for the handles instead? TIA

    Hi Rosie, that was a great tutorial! Thank you so much for your time. I have one question though. I am a beginner at bags and this one called for the foam lining. I noticed you skipped so I am guessing it’s not necessary?

    • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pattern does call for form interfacing, but I chose to use different interfacings. As you make bags and become more experienced, you will see that you do not always have to use the materials that the pattern recommends. Foam will make a more structured bag, but with the cork fabric and Decovil light, I did not need (or want) to use the foam. Have fun making bags!!

    Your purse came out really nice. I love the zipper. I never knew zippers had multi-colors. Can you please share where did you get the zipper? Thank you.

    Thank you for the video. What brand machine are you using and that pressure foot, I've not seen one like it. It looks like a very skinny walking foot

    Thank you for the very thorough tutorial! May I ask a question about your Fabricator? Is the motor loud (or belt or ?) as you are sewing? I am considering the Fabricator .. thank you!

    • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Fabricator has a servo motor which is silent when the machine is turned on. You can hear what the machine sounds like in the video when I start to sew. I do not think it is loud, but that is relative to the person. It would be hard to tell what the sound level is just from watching the video because it would depend on how you have your sound level set to on whatever device you are using. But, in my opinion, it is no louder than any other industrial sewing machine with a servo motor.

      @@RosiesArtStudio thank you! I live in an area where there are no shops that sell industrial machines so I have to go off online assistance. I have heard o Ky good things about Servo motors. 👍

    I find it’s better to fold the prongs of the magnetic snaps inward rather than outwards. That way they don’t interfere with your top stitching.

    I really enjoyed the video. I also was wondering what type of sewing machine you used? Can this bag be made using the materials you used on a domestic sewing machine? I am new to sewing and have a basic sewing machine. Thank you!

    • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was sewing on a Sailrite Fabricator. The best thing to do is set up a little sample with the fabrics and interfacings you want to use in your bag and do a test on your machine. I do not know what machine you have, but this bag can be made on many domestics with the same materials.

    I recently purchased the Sailrite Fabricator and wanted to make bags with it. Beginner here! When you use the Mara 70 thread, what is your needle size? It’s probably listed on their website based on the Tex number….

    Why did you leave the pocket lining open on the bottom when you birthed the bag from the opening from the lining of the bag? I've only seen the pocket lining left open to birth the bag, but you left two openings, so I was just confused. Thank you I love this bag and I never miss one of your tutorials.

    • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is easier to birth the bag through a larger opening in the lining. The bottom of the pocket is left open because after you birth the bag, you can pull the opening of the lining through the pocket to close it. Birthing the bag through the pocket is difficult because the opening would be too small. I hope this makes sense.

    Love your tutorials! How long have you had your Sailrite Fabricator? Do you feel the learning curve is fairly quick or is it like the Jukis?

    • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have only had the Fabricator about a months. So far, I am really liking it. I have not had any issues with a learning curve, but I have been sewing for decades on many different machines. The machine is very much like the Juki 1181.
