I've never seen anyone do this but I figured it out myself years ago. It just makes sense. It's like when sewing pillows....you need to sew a curve down to the point instead of sewing a straight line. A straight line will give you long, empty pointed corners where a curved line hugs the pillow insert, filling out the corners. Little tricks like this give professional results!

I don't cut the corners. I prefer to leave the corners and fold the fabric to get the triangle shape and then measure and mark your line. Sew on the line then cut the triangle off leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. What's nice about sewing is that it's all personal preference. This is a great tutorial for those that like to cut the corners out.

Superb tutorial! I enjoyed watching the video because your explanations of every step were so clear and your camera angles and audio were just right! So many tips! Thank you!. I only make pythagorean pouches these days because this design results in a rectangular pouch, whereas the typical boxed corner pouches (2 rectangles sewn together and corners then boxed) result in a narrower bottom and wider top, the opposite of what is practical.

I've made probably 20 of these bags and have been SO frustrated with how my top corners by the zipper are always folded in or pinched-looking. Never occurred to me to topstitch only where the zipper starts. Thank you for this tutorial, you helped me troubleshoot quite a lot! 😁

Oh my goodness! Not only the boxed bottoms, but several of your sewing processes, such as sewing in the seam allowance then pivoting to sew the topstitching, also blew my mind! I thank you for persisting in your 3-D trig, thereby helping the sewing world!

Amazing explanation of this problem. I’m 74 years old and been sewing since I was 4 years old
and I’ve made 100’s of bags/pouches and never realised that was what I needed to do to rectify the situation. I’ve always just shuffled it about and cut off the excess. Thank you for explaining it.
