I've never seen anyone do this but I figured it out myself years ago. It just makes sense. It's like when sewing pillows....you need to sew a curve down to the point instead of sewing a straight line. A straight line will give you long, empty pointed corners where a curved line hugs the pillow insert, filling out the corners. Little tricks like this give professional results!

I don't cut the corners. I prefer to leave the corners and fold the fabric to get the triangle shape and then measure and mark your line. Sew on the line then cut the triangle off leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. What's nice about sewing is that it's all personal preference. This is a great tutorial for those that like to cut the corners out.

This is a really nice video and easy to follow. One suggestion I’d have is to use a lining with a definite right/wrong side to help see which side goes up where. Thanks.

Natalie, i used your better boxed bottom technique on a new pattern I recently purchased and made for my friend. It worked out so well!! So easy to match up the ends and it made the bag stand up perfectly!! Thank you so much for showing us this technique. I’ll convert all my boxed bottom bag patterns from now on.
