    Great video! For photographers, the iPad is a great tool if you adopt a mobile workflow so it’s much more dependent on your workflow than making the OS more functional. For example, using Lightroom mobile is very capable and can be used to manage a photo library but it’s a different process compared to a laptop and Lightroom classic. Just different tools and use cases for different needs

      Indeed. For me I use Lightroom CC versus Classic. Which more of the CC features would be in the iPad version. You are right thought it’s about workflow

    I’m coming from a 2nd Gen iPad Pro 12.9. It has been a workhorse for me. Unfortunately I’ve cracked the screen a few times and the battery is just about worthless. I used it as a laptop replacement for many years. I bought a MacBook Pro 16” about a year after I got into photography to use as my workhorse. I ordered an 11” iPad Air today. For me, until LR and some other apps offer full features I couldn’t justify the price of another iPad Pro. I still use my iPad as my main “computer” for email TH-cam web etc. it’s coming from Costco so if I made a mistake with the air I’ll just return it

    iPad is not a competitive product to the Mac; it's an extension of Mac. The best way to use iPad within Apple eco system is to do light tasks while you're outside and complete it later when you get back to your workstation.
    I love to shoot wirelessly to my ipad and my clients love to pick up the ipad and do culling right on the spot. It's a more 'hands on' experience than a Macbook and of course it's lighter.

      Yes I agree but this is a first for the iPad to actually have the fastest chipset in Apples lineup. When I was there they took time to really explain the intricacies of the M4 and the way they were describing it, I think the iPad will change sooner than later.

The new pencil pro with squeeze is really nice, but I hope for double click, triple, and hold click feature. Now my old Air 2 become media machine to save battery of new iPad.

    Couple of questions: 1) have you tried the nano-etch surface, and if so any comments? 2) how do we calibrate the display (or at least get somewhat close) to fit in with the rest of a color calibrated workflow? Thanks.

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great questions: yes I’ve tried it. I was initially sent one for review but after using it a bit in the UK I opted for the standard display. Two reasons: first, since these OLED displays capture true blacks and rich colors it’s easier to edit to that vs a screen with less contrast and slightly muted colors which the Nano textured glass gives you. While this great for outdoor scenarios or uncontrollable lighting conditions to edit with it I personally feel is a bit more challenging.
      Second, I don’t like the gloss border around it. I feel have it all at Nano textured or gloss. I understand the cameras are an issue but it detracts from the viewing. Also the viewing angles are a bit limited with Nano Textured.
      Yes there is a reference mode in the advance part of the display for color calibration and you can fine tune the display to your liking.

    • @boblozano
      @boblozano 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@btonelli thanks for the observations. Think the partial nano-etching would end up bugging me a fair amount, plus have concerns about muting the colors. Add to that open questions about the durability of this new etching process when subjected to heavy use, went ahead and switched to the non-etched surface. Have had iPads since the og, but think enough things have come together to give it a serious go as part of a hybrid Lightroom classic (where all images are stored and kept) and lr cc (for images that are actively being edited). If it works out for at least some video editing that would be a bonus,.

    • @boblozano
      @boblozano 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@btonelli update: after playing around with the nano-etch surface in person and the ordinary one for a few days, ended up deciding to go with the nano-etch surface after all. Mostly about texture and usability while editing, and yes the visibility in situations where I won't have any control over the ambient light.
      Concerns over durability remained, but discussed with folks at the Apple Store and they noted that applecare would cover degradation of the nano-etch surface.
      The nano-etch device just arrived today (must produce in *much* smaller volumes).
      OTOH my wife is very happy with her equivalent iPad Pro for more basic usage.

    Like you i been using the M1 iPad Pro 12.9 with 1tb for all my photo editing. I bet i use it 8 to 10 hours a day since it came out. But mine is starting to slow down and it's starting to overheat really bad which Apple support said it is my USBC charging port which is causing the overheating. So I pre-ordered the new M4 iPad Pro 13 with 1tb and the apple pencil Pro it should be here in 2 days. I am really excited for it to show up get back into a nice steady editing process. Since my iPad Pro started to slow down I picked up and been using the Samsung S9 Ultra with one terabyte and 16 gigs of RAM. The oled display is phenomenal but the only thing bad with it is the color gamut is not as accurate as the iPad and I have to tweak the colors before giving them to my clients on my Mac PC. But i plan on keeping the Samsung S9 Ultra for my video editing simple drone footage and my new m4 iPad Pro 13 for photo editing. • @btonelli
      @btonelli  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The M4 should be much better for you in many ways. As far as importing depends what system you use and files. I tend to import directly into Lightroom so that is software dependent in some ways, but will try a few different methods and get back to you.

    At the end it’s a decision everyone must make based on their own needs.
    A MacBook Pro will probably always have more room for even more performance, they do have 8 high performance cores now, and maybe with the M4 they’ll get 10 or 12, who knows?
    Bit than what are people doing with their devices and how much performance do they need? A lot of users will probably be more than fine with that configurations, others will need or want more power.
    The same is true with the software capabilities, both OS and apps. Some will be fine with iPad OS, which in itself is probably still the biggest limitation, others will have problems with them.
    But one thing really puzzles me, other than a marketing point of view - do we really need iPads to get thinner, or would a slightly thicker iPad with a slightly bigger battery and no camera bump for it to lay flat on the table even without a case not have been the better way? Honestly I’d have preferred that, but I’m not the one making these decisions 😉😂

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Valid points.
      The M4 has 9 and 10 performance cores now. The 10 comes with the 1TB and 2TB configuration.
      Yes most people never really maximise their laptops or tablets but the same can be said for cars, etc. most people only use a percentage of that power for their needs the rest can be based on Vanity or just the desire to have the best.
      iPad OS has been limiting thus far, but I feel that may change this year. This iPad is too powerful not to maximise it.
      As I mentioned I think the thin aspect is more about what the future holds with this new type of chipset vs anything else. Call it the “halo” product to show consumers this is what we can do and that tech will bleed into other devices in the future

    We need iPadOS for touch usability. As everyone should know, desktop OSs are not finger friendly. Look at the compromises Microsoft had to make in order to get Windows to work in the Surface Pro. It’s one reason (besides the high prices) why they’ve never sold well. I’d like to see more macOS features come to the iPad, even if it’s just to the bigger screen models, but not the macOS UI. It’s just a few weeks now, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.

    • @btonelli
      @btonelli  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes agree, but also to the point of Microsoft, I would say their marketing and distribution channels for the Surface products aren’t as streamlined as Apple’s. The balance of keeping vendors happy while creating their own products made for some odd decisions.

    Great that you mention the truth about the cameras. Other TH-camrs make a huge deal out of it and in reality I believe nobody use the cameras in iPads. I have almost all generations and my kids also , and all the pictures are from their phones , not their iPads. Pretty sure Apple see the stats on their servers and realize nobody used the wide camera and thus get it pf it. Great call for Apple. All of the WDDC AI features should run fine on M1 and up chips. There is no way the AI features are M4 specific since that will just alienate everyone on earth until maybe in 2 days when small % of people get M4 iPad Pro. As expected, I think WDDC will be overhyped on the AI features coming. GPT-4o (HER) announced today will run on any hardware, no one will care about the local AI stuff unless you are using the creative suit to do automatic content generation.
