What are your thoughts on who we should reintroduce next? Lynx? Wolves? Let me know!
When I went to Rhum in around 1990 the gameskeeper, along with at least a couple of wildlife organisations, was pushing for wolves to be reintroduced to the island. His reason was that he hated having to kill so many of the deer every year to keep their numbers down to something viable and that wolves would do that for him, giving him more time for his other duties. His argument that the two would find a natural balance made a lot of sense, as well as the point that if they were released on an island wolves wouldn't spread to any human areas.
Sadly Rhum has changed a lot since then and is far more of a tourist attraction so less suitable for wolves.
More wolves and fewer 'game' animals would make a huge and beneficial change to Scotland's ecosystem.

Living in Canada I am so grateful that we have Wolves and Lynx! But even here some people still have a negative opinion about Wolves. I even had an IG 'argument' with someone who said that Wolves are evil. I have to shake my head at such nonsense but when I looked at their IG picture I believe they were cattle farmers so hence their point of view.
@@francineh.7825 Cattle kill more people in the UK than any other animal. I think tigers need more territory - seeing as we can't get scimitar cats back from extinction. They would keep the deer in check.
Beavers were reintroduced to British Columbia by Eric Collier. They have now made their way all the way into Vancouver and thrive around Jericho Beach. They do amazing work for nature.
Beavers were re introduced here in The Netherlands in 1988, and are doing very well. If that's possible in such a small country, it should be a breeze in the UK!
Hi Dani. Yes i love to talk animal so way not Beavers. Im not an expert of any kind but im grown up in northen Sweden and have been in the woods hole life. Animals should have their plase and respect than we can live with them. You cant just go infront of a baer and say hay there mlve your ass from here because i own the land or i will build here. Than mr Baer will bee mad very very mad and i understand. Same with Beavers but if we have a haelthy mix all have plase. What do you think?
There are some concerns though if they aren't threatening dykes (especially in Limburg I believe), but I don't think it makes much sense to compare the Netherlands to the UK anyway to make such a statement to be fair. It's not just a matter of a country's size.

I live in Canada, where the beaver is our national animal, in a relatively wild area and I would love to see beavers come back but people here will kill them every chance they get. Such stupidity.
In Switzerland in 1977 141 beavers where released by private persons. 1978 only 111 survived. think was around 2008 when i actually saw one, then they had multiplied to about 1600. in 2020 it was already 4900. beginnings are hard, and it takes a few decades from reintroduced animals to really reclaim the land.
The beaver is a master environmentalist. We love them in Canada in our great north. They do such wonders to our environment.

Where I usually fish here in Sweden, I usually see big beavers and big huts. They tend to dam up all sorts of watercourses.
It's so good to see these things happening. I was interested to see that efforts are being made to return cats to the wild. Here in Australia we are trying to rid the environment of cats. The feral cat problem in Australia is enormous and they have been responsible for the extinction and decimation of small native fauna. Early settlers (and some not so early) introduced many species from their homelands that found Australia very much to their liking and they have proliferated. Anyway Dani, keep up the good work. Hello from Northern California. Recently, and unfortunately I can not remember were I heard, Beavers where going to be rewild back into nature...We need it, like we need all wild life. Some of Us humans, personally have a disregard for nature, for wild life and the beauty it naturally provides.
Thank you for the interesting video. I now feel almost privileged that we have beavers again in Hesse for a few years now, as well as wild cats and - yes - wolves again, too.

I lived for more than two decades 2 hours south of where your house in Sweden is. I bought a house with a lake, and only 5 houses surrounding it, a paradise fir wildlife and me. Two beavers lived here as well. I heard a boom in the middle of the night but thought nothing of it as many hunt here. Sadly I noticed one beaver was missing, the neighbour thought it his right to kill whatever he liked it seems. The one beaver lived on but eventually that too was gone, probably to find a mate. This just shows how many treat the beauty of nature, refusing to enjoy and live with it. But it us better on a higher note. Enjoy Sweden when you get back, va truly free and wonderful country.

The rewilding of wolves is a very controversial topic here in the Netherlands. They were introduced a few years ago, but problems are starting, especially for farmers that are losing sheep to the wolves. There will always be a clash between humans and wild animals, because the tendency of humans is to want benefits, but dont want the negative sids effects. We need to learn to coexist ❤
I don't know much about beavers, I just know that your voice is so relaxing I could listen to it all day.

🍃Here in Canada beavers are in abundance they are so important to the eco system and it is great the UK is re-introducing them back into the wild. I live near the SpeedRiver in Guelph Ontario that goes along a community trail path for bikes and walkers and the other day during my morning walk I saw that a beaver was cutting down small trees along the trail. It is the first time in 17 years that a beaver has been in this river that is basically in the middle of a city. It is great but i hope the conservation authority doesn't trap it and relocate it, but will see. 😊❤🍃
Inspiring and beautiful. There is a beaver habitat rewilding effort here in the central Willamette Valley of Oregon. It's very successful so far, thanks in part to a public education effort. One consideration here is that beaver habitat can reduce the damage done by wildfires, which are a large and growing problem in the American west.
If you ever come to Alberta Canada, there are many places you can go to watch for Coyotes, Various large birds including Pelicans at the northern end of their migration route, Marmots, Elk, Moose, Prairie dogs and maybe a few beavers and Muskrats in or near various rivers.

Hey Dani, thank you for this lovely video, I think there can’t be enough of such programms to reintroduce animals back where they belong. It’s very sad 😢 though that people have made the mistake to hunt them till there are no species left. Nature’s benefits are hugh with the variety of animals and keeps the balance in order. Great job to the Beaver Trust and European Nature Trust 👍

I am reading Eager the Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter. Highly suggest reading it. I learned Beavers are a keystone species which I never understood but glad to say I know do! Livning in small city in Sweden. When i was a kid beavers was something you read about in school. Now i have a 5min walk from the town center to where the beavers live. I believe that most people like them but they do cause problems from time to time. They did cut down a friendship tree gifted from finland. And they tried to dam the runoff water from half the city.

Beavers are high on my wishlist of animals I want to photograph and film. I know of a few spots with beavers nearby, some where there is clear active signs, but even after camping out there for hours, I have yet to spot one in the flesh.
To spend time with the worlds rarest wild cats must have been amazing.
Who doesn't love Beavers! They are cute, entertaining, industrious, clever buggers! Master builders. I cud watch them all day long! It's their innate ability to construct perfectly formed Dams, some of them are massive! From piles of twigs n sticks, leaves, and mud that fascinates me! It's like Human Creativity to build, create, design, invent......where does this innate creative ingenuity come from!? If you can answer that question, you'll probably discover the secret of the entire origin of the Universe! 😮👍❤

OMG! 10 shows are coming up on this channel! World is a great place in spite of the doom and gloom in the news, we - Dani's fans - will get 10 shows for free! Everybody should support her fantastic work in all possible ways. I have written it here before - this is top notch quality wild life photography - best in SWEDEN - surpassing all of the past legends we have (Klum, Lindblad etc), I just wish that she got her own show on Swedish TV so the old folks not so tech savvy could enjoy all here wonderful little stories. HUGE SHOUT OUT TO DANI for giving us this story from Scotland. I am so looking forward to the next show. Buy her calendar! Give her a "swish" or whatever. This work we will support. I hope you stay in Sweden! By the way, even though the beavers in my forest has created a real mess - I can now accept a little detour to avoid their havoc - without the cursing - I now learned how they contribute to the nature.
Out here in Portland, Oregon we have the Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge. There is a huge pond that is due to beaver activities. I saw a tree that was felled with clear beaver marks on it. I hope to return and see them. Also, the Oregon State animal is the beaver.
I have never heard of a Scottish wild cat they look just like a tabby here in the states!! So very cool learning about all of these animals I have always loved learning about stuff like this!
Those captive cats are quite domestic looking. Actual wildcats in Scotland have quite flat, stubby faces with quite a stern look, and are noticeably more muscular.
Which bright spark thought to release/rewild beavers into a London park. Have you seen what releasing beavers into southern Argentina has done? A massive area of delicate forest has been destroyed as there is no control. Rewilding may work in Scotland, but any where else is asking for trouble. Rewilding does not mean sticking them in a big enclosure either.

This is so cool.
There's a lot of work happening in the western half of the US to do similar things. Beavers, bears, bison, wolves, etc. weren't extinct there, but they were certainly severely depleted. There's not as much happening in the eastern half, which on the one had makes sense. It's where most of the US population is. But on the other hand, there's still a lot that I think we could do and that would improve quality of life across the board. A lot of what I see being done on the east coast is water related, like removing small dams and building up oyster reefs. Good stuff, but I'd like to see more. That said, some progress is being made. Apparently there's even a beaver dam on the pathetic, mostly parking lot run-off stream that I live near.

That river at the end of the film was beautiful. It reminds me of some stretches of rivers around the northern quark in Sweden. Since you live in northern Sweden, I would propose that given a chance, you should make a trip to the Lögde River, possibly one of the most beautiful rivers in northern Sweden. It is unexploited, undisturbed with a completely restored catchment area including all tributaries. It mostly runs through wilderness with almost no villages, roads, or anyone living nearby. This leads to an abundance of wildlife in and around the valley, with some spectacular meanderings and rapids cutting through deep sediment. It discharges in the northern quark, about 45 kilometres south of the city of Umeå.

Magic as always Dani, I have spent a lot of time in the Cairngorms, and whilst the Tay River is a large fishing river, I can certainly see the scope over a broad potential region. I was last Ski Instructing there in 1986, the year of the Siberian Storm, -20C, rivers frozen over, I several times walked home from Aviemore to Carrbridge through the Forest at night, coming across Roe Deer, etc. At elevations therefore a suitable place to start would be a challenge. Tripple yes's on Lynx, and Wolves. I miss them from Norway and Sweden. I also met and stayed with Mikkel Atsi, the Sami Reindeer herder for a week! Great work Dani..........
30 years ago there weren´t a lot of beavers in Sweden. They were very rare and you could only see them in the northern parts of the country. Now they are litteraly everywhere. Around Stockholm there are beavers in almost all lakes and there are so many of them that they have to hunt them to keep the population down. Were I live we had a family of beavers move in about 15 years ago. They had babies a couple of times and they are supercute. Sadly the female got hit by a car and was killed. I think beavers are really cool animals but they do make a mess sometimes. I read about a family north of Stockholm that got all there apple trees cut down in the garden while they were away for the weekend, lol.

we have a red squirrel reserve / sanctuary around 12km or so from my home at a place called Formby - on the outskirts of Liverpool. It is a large forested area which joins directly to Formby beach and squirrels have been spotted in the sand dunes.

Beavers where reintroduced in Sweden 100 years ago having been totally extinct for 50 years, there are an estimated 130,000 beavers in the wild in Sweden today and hunting beavers has been allowed since the 1970's
These days its quite common to see both beavers in streams and rivers as well as signs of beavers many parts of Sweden

Fascinating about the Scottish beavers, their multi-chambered dams, and how they're a keystone (?) species in the overall ecosystem. I've seen wild beavers in Seattle, WA, USA at the UW Horticultural Center's Wildlife Sanctuary . In the same little park I've also seen deer, pheasants, redwing blackbirds, pelicans, mergansers, Green Herons, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Nesting pair of osprey, salamanders, Cedar Waxwings, Bohemian Waxwings, Northern Pintails, Greenwinged Teals, Killdeer, Bufflehead, Pine Siskins, Red-shafted Flickers, Kinglets, Wood Ducks, King Fishers, Western Tanagers, Cooper Hawks, and many more. I'm looking forward to receiving your 2024 Red Squirrel Calendar, which I'm expecting sometime in the near future. Thanks! Jenny

Next time you go to Sweden i do hope you would make a video about lynx. Haven´t seen you made any about them, so far. They are shy and difficult to cought on film. But it is an wonderful animal

Thank you for another wonderful video, this time, on beaver reintroduction in the UK. I was wondering whether you might be interested in filming the platypus in the wild in Tasmania. Not easy to see in the wild but I was lucky enough to be shown them in a small stream near the old Deloraine wildlife zoo in north western Tasmania when I was a student at the University of Tasmania doing a Science degree and my participation was because of a small project in the biology component of the degree. I am not sure whether the little zoo is still around but platypus definitely live in the area of Deloraine. I'd love to see such a video made by you from an old Tasmanian resident, now in the UK.
Dear DanI Love wildlife and your photography. Appreciate you being able to stay still and silent. I realise that you would more than likely NEVER check out a channel called "The facts by How to Hunt" however the creator, Steve Isdahl, who is Canadian of Swedish heritage, is a really good wildlife videographer in my opinion. Bears, deer, elk, etc. and a sound human being. His footage of Vancouver the mts etc is beautiful

Just be prepared for your deer population to drastically diminish if wolves are reintroduced. It’s one of the trade offs.

Beavers were extinct here but they came back in the last 20 years naturally. They are coming into cities now there is a family of beavers next to the biggest railway station in this country.
