You have noticed all the clearcuted areas with treeplantations replacing the primeval forests, leaving Sweden with only 0,3% Primeval forest. We are tought in school how good it is with treeplantations and our nature preservation is adapted to the forest industries. actually many scientists work for the forestry and making up the rules...

I am seriously concerned about you not wearing a life jacket in the canoe. WE lived in Gällö, near Östersund for several weeks one summer. It was beautiful weather but the water in the lakes was very cold.

Yes, they regularly run (at least, used to run) ad campaigns to try and remind people to use "flytvästar" or life jackets on boats.

@BlackRain_ we have rabbits in our forest but are very afraid of humans. I see them very rarely on my daily hikes.
Not to be annoying, just like to add that it's not a bunny/ rabbit but a mountain hare, a completely different species. It is bigger than a rabbit, has longer ears and hind legs, and its fur changes color from brown/grey to white in the winter, while rabbits keep the same color year round. Hares are also not kept as pets. It would be an excellent moment to answer your daughters excitement with some education on wild life.

There are a two main reasons I love watching Dani's videos. First and foremost the content is unbelievably good. The scenery and wildlife are shown in glorious detail that both makes my heart skip a beat and at the same time slows it down as I just relax and chill out. Secondly and perhaps slightly unusual is her voice. I suffer from bouts of clinical depression and find that the sound of Dani's voice can help break me out of the cycle. It doesn't seem to mater what she is saying it is the tone, pace and just rexing atmosphere her voice generates. I don't think I could ever say a big enough thank you to her for the difference she makes in my life.
I would also add that the music tracks add to the serenity as well.

My thoughts and experience exactly! If that weren't enough, there are lots of gnats and midgets as well. I guess that's one of the reasons I like kayaking. It's a way to escape them. 😏

@@OlafPawbelt Well, I guess it depends on where you are and when. Hiking between Hemavan and Ammarnäs in late June was horrible in some places, especially around Tärnasjö because of the mosquitoes. Despite being fully covered and wearing a mosquito net it was impossible to stop there. Another nasty experience was when I was climbing with a friend for 4h about 20 km from Skellefteå. I had unprotected gaps of a couple of cm above each ankle. There were lots of midgets, so afterwards I had swollen rings on each leg above the ankles due to a couple of hundred bites on each leg.
@@FredrikGranlundkayaker bräms i worse in my opinion, but i don't really have issues with mosqitous, they land on me but barely do anything anymore, some years earlier they could bite but it disappeared as fast it started to itch

Smashing content, Dani, just damn smashing. I have been a follower from when you first started and it is wonderful to see your progress. Always was good, but everything is improving; the videography, cinematography, the music - all class. What I haven't seen mentioned as yet though, is... wait for it... your voice! Your narration, tone, and overall presentation is top class, and I can see [hear!!] your voice and narration making big time TV (especially here in the UK) at some point. I agree with your point about promoting yourself. It's a great way to make a 'connection' between you and your audience, and strange from your perspective I am sure it is, it is lovely to get to know you virtually. Keep up the great work. John

I totally agree with you. I see a lot of young and old making mistakes that I don't think they should. I believe everyone should have an investment plan that improves their financial stability. The investment can be your retirement plan or your future plan, whatever you want, but the most important thing is that you have an investment plan that pays off.

I remember seeing one of your first videos about the baby squirrels. Now 2 or 3 years later look at you. Not only do you create beautiful videos and photos you also got an amazing voice and clear way of speaking that is tremendously soothing / calming.

As for mosquitoes, it really can be helpful to wash all parts of exposed skin (mostly face and hands) in a cold stream or even with some collected dewdrops.
It cools down your skin and mosquitoes will lose interest for at least 5 to 10 minutes.
I was taught so by a Norwegian friend who is a forester in Hedmark, Norway. And guess what? It helped. Time and again!

De-forestation still looks bad, and there are other ways to do it that leaves more trees left. But it is all about money. And it is important to understand that the forest was the engine of Swedish industry, much like coal was in the UK (and that left big scars in the landscape and lots of pollution).
And even if you see a lot of de-forestation, there is a lot more forest in Sweden now, then like 50 years back... And most of the forests in Sweden are planted to be "harvested", but it takes some 70-100 years at most places.
Actually Sweden had never so little forests, (Watch More Of Everything Documentary) it's a lie that forests are increasing, plantations are increasing .

@@Skogen594 A sad reality is that the huge part of forests in Sweden are planted, there aren't that many wild forests left outside of nature reserves and even those are not fully protected.
@@SvengelskaBlondie . Even the forest industry claims that most of Sweden is plantation so they can cut it, however the truth is that less than 10 percent of Sweden is plantation and more than 90% is natural mixed forests, only lacking very old trees.

Regarding large bodies of water: Please, wear some kind of PFD (Personal Flotation Device). It can be a swim west, but if the water is cold you should wear a lifejacket. A lifejacket because the cold would make you gasp, get a lot of water un your lungs, and is going to drown.
[I'm from Sweden] I've also noticed the difference in handling of wildlife by watching @wildlifeaid channel for several years. For herbivores I guess one difference is that we have a large population of them that is hunted - an mildly injured roe deer that gets euthanized off hunting season is still some meat. In the UK it seems the rescuing is in the city/suburbs (or maybe I'm skewed by the area @wildlifeaid is in). I also seems to be under a strained budget they operate - in Sweden with less people I don't think a nationwide covering wildlife aid could work.
I've also have a theory that humans tend to the wildlife when it's rare but get more and more aggressive the more it is a problem. The UK seems to be on one end. Sweden we do hunt more (for meat and predator control) but it's regulated and orderly done - the full human capability is not unleashed. On the far end of this is the pest control - like in the US with feral hogs. Helicopters, vehicles, automatic rifles, night vision/thermal vision etc.
The wild boar population spread in Sweden needs to be stopped otherwise it will shift more and more to the US style. Wild boars aren't on the main menu for our predators either (analyzing droppings I think came to that conclusion). Basically the wolves will eat all other wildlife and livestock before really going after the wild boars, so more of them is not a solution as someone else in the comments suggested.

If you've got Japan in mind, here in Nagoya, it's not overly citified, in the surrounding areas (here in Meitou-ku, it's really nice), and it's not much farther towards more forested areas. I'm probably the only mix of Indigenous Canadian and Scandinavian person here, and such blood **CRAVES** nature LOL The bamboo/evergreen forest across the street is a haven for me 🙂

Hi Dani! I'm not sure how sweeden operates. But be aware that if you buy a forrest of a certain size, you might be obliged by law to run it. You can't just leave it. But you're pretty smart, from what I've seen so you probably looked into these kinds of issues already. Best of luck!

If someone were to visit Sweden and would like to see the sights you have in your videos (the countryside I guess?), where would we go? I'm a fan of the City but I absolutely love the quiet side. As I grow older, the more and more I want to pack up and live on a homestead far away from everyone.
You won't get any proper answers with so little input. Nature like Danis home area, can be found much further to the south if going to the correct area. There's really no ideal route, as anything you'll try shouldn't dissapoint in any way. Avoid going in winter, as it is too dark to experience it with lack of sunlight, especially if you would visit further north. Mid June is nice usually, as it doesn't tend to rain too much. But it can be cold. There are days that reach 30 and I've even experienced light snowfall when celebrating Midsommar which is around 20th June.
You can search google for "land cover in the nordics map" which takes you to a site representing it well on where we have forest (or: where we don't). And then "sweden population density map" which gets you a map from yellow to red on where people live. I think you get a feel for how the country is then.
If you like nature and still don't want to be too far from cities, then the region called Småland is quite a good choice. There are still quite a few deep and old forests left, kept as nature reserves. One such forest is located just outside the small town of Mullsjö, there you can find undisturbed forest as well as lots of animals. Certain parts had quite a big chance of encountering not just deer but also elk.
Scania isn't that great of a choice due to the heavy prevalence of agriculture (a large part of agriculture is done there).
Pretty much most of the country is gonna have lots of nature, Sweden is 70ish percent forest. You don't even need to go that far up north to see allot of animals in nature, you do however sort of need to do that if you want to see wolves (the few that we still have). Bears are sort of the same, they tend to stay more in the mid/north parts of the country. Go far enough north and you will encounter reindeer.
My best tip is to look at a map and then choose a region and search region + naturreserv, there's quite allot of nature reserves you can visit and see animals at.
I get that hunting is something you can have issues with coming from the UK as I guess there it’s more of a sport or recreational activity. It can be here too, but many hunts for the meat and to be honest that’s more “humane” then how cows and pigs are kept for slaughter. And as we don’t have enough big predators to keep the deer’s, boars and moose’s population in check it would lead to big problems if we didn’t cull them by hunting. Farmers crops would be eaten, same with trees plantations (regrowth after lumbering projects). Wild life car accidents would get worse etc. Sweden has so much forests and is sparsely populated, especially in the North so hunting is essential for keeping a balance. The hunting quota is strictly regulated to keep the wild life population on healthy levels too.
Same with the lumbering industry, as it’s one of the things we export and without it there would be way less jobs available in the north part of Sweden. Much has change with machines that make less damage to the ground, lumbering is regulated and research has been ongoing to save fauna and animals. I don’t know if the balance is correct, some say we have to much young forest at to few old, untouched forests and that might be right. But it all comes back to that the forest is a resource we need to take care of and protect and in the same time it’s vital as a income for people and Sweden.
With the climate changing, our forests are vital for our survival and the younger the forest is the more vulnerable it is.

Hunting in Sweden is a far more complex topic… I understand herbivores need to be controlled. Why? Because they damage young tree plantations and the population would quickly (in a few years) grow to trophic imbalance. Loss of wildflowers, tree saplings struggle to establish, etc. But nature should work in an equilibrium but historically in Northern Sweden, there should be wolves. But they’ve been hunted to extinction because they predate on reindeer which are livestock. The swedes also hunt the other predators- bears and lynxes. So now we “have to” hunt moose. But really it’s a short term solution to a historic problem. And this is a common problem in most countries, the UK including. What I really detest, is hunting whatever you can, our local beaver family was recently shot. My neighbour used to hunt squirrels before I arrived. Another neighbour shot a fox cub “because it was there”. You cannot eat a fox cub. Completely pointless.

I remember driving to work at night, I worked night shift at a place 50 km outside of town, driving thru a mix of agricultures land and woodland and thru the extra headlights of my car I could count to 12 to 14 pair of eyes on each side of the road. It was deer that was gracing on farmland, and this was only one spot. There where several more. The deer population had exploded after the fox population had been severely decreased due to a mange epidemic. Traffic accidents from collisions with deer sky rocketed, as the smaller roads can’t be protected by fences and if you driven on these smaller roads you know it nearly impossible to protect against these kind of accidents. The deer is hard to spot as they blend in to the environment and they move very fast. The more animals you have the more they have to move around to get food, thus increasing the risk of accidents as the often travel in dusk or dawn.
Predators like wolves and bears seems fun to have as long you don’t have to encounter them while walking your dog or have farm animals that you don’t want to be slaughtered. Wolfs and bears doesn’t belong in areas near populated areas and only people in big cities where non of these animals roam thinks that we need more of these predators. So do you want a living countryside where people can live and work or do you want a countryside with only summer houses with electric fence to fend of the boars?
The Hunters exam isn’t just a couple of days, you have to do a written exam and then practical exams for shotgun and then for bullet that you have to pass. In the past most male hunters already had experience handling and shooting as we very trained in the military as conscripts. But I agree, to many forget the that “a bullet never fired is easier to regret”! I used to hunt several years ago, but found out I doesn’t like killing animals I don’t desperately needed to eat, so I quite. I did meet people that was a bit to trigger happy for my taste, I more then often had to let the animal go as I didn’t have a clear kill shot. But most of the hunters I’ve meet has a genuine interest of preserving the forests and the wild life. We have hunted for hundred of thousands of years, it’s in our genes, depicting it as something unnatural or evil is dumb, but modern hunting needs to regulate and I guess we need to constantly work on that.
@@DaniConnorWild I think we have a gap between the cultural identity and the modern hunting reality in Sweden nowadays. Landowners are often too old or urbanised to actually carry out a successful control only by hunting their lands. The problem is even worse in southern Sweden where we have other deer species with only arbitrary control of the populations. In northern Sweden where moose and semi domesticated reindeer dominate, there are regulations and qoutas that acually keeps the deer populations down better. In southern Sweden where the lands are mostly owned by small private owners it is totally arbitrary how much of the roe, fallow and red deer (and wild boar) that is actually hunted every year. Here, you can have every other property not being hunted and controlled at all. The rest are often being hunted more like a sports activity, often only in theory, and not so much to actually control the populations. If people cannot accept larger predator populations we need to have a more regulated hunting policy forcing landowners to cull their wildlife better. The forest ecosystems are definately not in balance now.

Yes, in Sweden we for some idiotic reason shot injured animals, rather than trying to save them. My wife and I live right next to northern Europe's largest cemetery, which is surrounded by a lot of forest. During the summer... maybe three years ago, a deer had managed to get stuck between two bars in a large gate going into the cemetary. The whole neighborhood get involved in trying to save the deer. We got word that someone was going to send a hunter to "take care of it", and everyone in the neighborhood was like "HELL NO!". The deer was so tired, and had basically given up getting loose, and it was so scared. We managed to sneak up from the back and insert a mini car jack between the bars and carefully pryed them apart. At first the deer didn't understand what was happening, and like I said, it was so tired from trying to get loose from the bars. Someone was brave enough to tickle one of its back paws (does deer have paws?), and off it ran! Everyone was so happy and touched by how it sprinted away. It was free again! We still see a lot of deers roaming around all year long, and I believe one of them is the one we saved that summer.
Oh dear, They taste so good, venison is a delicacy.

Dislikes about Sweden? Swish! It’s a nightmare for us ‘Foreigners’ you can’t pay for anything anywhere……honestly not even us Finnish tourists can pay at flea markets and smaller places. We really need a Nordic system not just a country mobile payment system!

@@TheSigmaQueen It is! So many places won’t accept credit cards….and yes it’s fine if you happen to be near a cash point. This is mostly because buying privately everyone uses Swish mobile pay.

Just a quick word about hunting. I eat meat and i rather eat meat i know come from an animal that has had a good life like a wild moose than a cow from some huge farm where they spend their whole life in a confined space.

Well, I think we need some context here for non sweeds... 😊 First I love to be in the forest too. 🎄 But "Deforestation" sounds like a "permanent down cutting of forest", like Amazonas. To be clear, that's not the case in Sweden and Sweden are one big forest with some exceptions. 😅 Most forest in Sweden are "farmed" and planted. There is cutting downs when the forest plantation are ready and it's strictly regulated. Beside that there is an forever ongoing argument about best practice and different interest, owners right and ecology. I think the conflicts are escalated too due to the right of roaming. I have friends of both sides. /Sweed

Regarding potentially injured deer: yes, they are routinely shot, as are essentially all injured wild animals. However, the animal does not go to waste as they are usually used as food by the local hunters. (At least if it is safe to eat the animal, it could have some disease that makes it unfit or food). If I remember correctly you are a vegetarian, so you don't eat meat at all. If you are not a vegetarian (or want to try meat), deer is a very tasty meat, with much more taste than any factory-grown beef. Elk is not far from it, as is reindeer.
As for the forestry industry: without it the north of Sweden would die within a few decades. Nothing north of Gävle or thereabouts would have the financial muscle to survive without the forestry industry. Some few places would survive, eg Kiruna (it has a large iron-ore mine to keep it going), but any small town away from the Norrland coast would be doomed to a slow death by depopulation, and this would spread to larger towns eventually killing everything.
Sweden is losing about 1-2 percent of forests to clearcutting, mostly mixed natural forests, every year. Watch More of Everything - film about Swedish forestry. There are many lies out there, and people still doing it.
