Although Keyleth and Vax and Scanlan and Pike are the 2 most prominent ones.
A few things: Keyleth had a crush on both twins at some point, but that blush is about getting validation and praise from Vex, who has been pretty harsh on her the whole time. She sort of idolizes her, because Vex is cool, confident, flirts with ease, comfortable with her body, everything Keyleth is not.
"I think I might have a thing for twins."-definitely pretty close to what Keyleth says to Percy after encouraging Vex to flash her titties.
there is no greatest girl crush on Vex than that of drunken Pike.

Minor Spoiler for the campaign, written in a way that spoils as little as possible:
When Grog is in one of his 1-on-1 fights, Vex asks the group, "Should I flash him? Can't hurt right?"
And Keyleth says under her breath, "I-it couldn't hurt the rest of us either..."
Percy gives her a funny look because she's dating Vax, and she says "What? I dunno, I've got a thing for twins."
The dragon they faced in the first two episodes was an adult dragon. The dragons coming their way are older, ancient dragons and dragons get significantly stronger as they grow older and bigger.
He was a young adult even. Several leagues below the rest. But I am not sure if that is the same in the animated series. If it is, then they should be way larger than Brimscythe.

@@dehro I'm sure they'll look proper in Season 2. Budget constraints and all that. No point putting a ton of effort and resources into one shot that'll probably be redone at the start of the next season anyway.
Fun fact, During their original DND campaign, Percy actually tried going into the acid to try and save the gun, and Talison(Percy's player) still hasn't forgiven Sam(Scanlans player) for destroying the it, even after these past 6-7 years. Cost wise I think it was worth like a small castle, but I could be wrong, gold costs get weird in tabletop games.
It was enchanted, which adds 1000 gold on top of whatever the cost was originally, not to mention there was no real way to enchant guns since it was one of a kind.

@@beoborf8877 I also heard he said both items used to enchant it were old and one of a kind, so that had to of also drove up its value by a good amount, but I could be wrong about this one.

One thing I love about this episode is how up to this point you could count all of Percy's shots before he reloads, which some of the writers have admitted that it's a bitch to keep track lol,
but once he gets taken over, uh, gun go "BBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"

Not quiet sure, but the gem in Percy's hand might be for an occasion when an altercation needs a more diplomatic approach.
The results are quite shocking.
Thing about "plot armor" - it doesn't exist in D&D. Especially not in the way Matt Mercer handles spells to bring back the dead... there's always a very real chance that a dead character is permanently dead. Not a spoiler... just something you need to build into your expectations.
Also - once Kiki is conscious, she's able to heal herself... at least a little bit.
Matt's revival spell is what I think would make more sense when casting, but maybe for veteran DnD players in terms of using this rule.
The kickstarter was originally to fund episodes 1&2 as a pilot so that they could shop it around and then it took off and they got enough money for 10 episodes (Amazon upped it to 12). That is part of the reason these 2 episodes feel different, they only committed to the Briarwood arc once the kickstarter started going crazy and they knew they would have the budget to do it.

No, the kickstarter was funding for a special that was like 40 minutes long. They ended up splitting it into 2 episodes though for obvious reasons. The reason why episode 11 and 12 have better action is because of the fact that those 2 episodes were funded by amazon.

My take on Percy and his demon...
Within D&D lore we have fiends (demons and devils - we won't get in to what makes them different) who use souls in various ways to essentially gain power. For some uses, the soul has to be corrupt (read: evil). There's some additional power advantage if the fiend can corrupt an otherwise good soul before collecting it.
When Scanlan asks who the sixth barrel is for... Orthax projects a shadow of Percy aiming the pepper box at his own head. That is both telling and deceiving. The intent isn't just to kill Percy (we see Orthax resist Percy's attempt to kill himself in this episode). It is to corrupt Percy's soul and then collect. Because Orthax is a deceiver. It whispered the secrets of the pepper box in to Percy's dreams and set an unspoken pact. Percy didn't just craft a machine of destruction unknown to those in his time, but a magical weapon. The names on the barrel are not a list of revenge but whispers from Orthax. Whispers that would lead Percy to kill innocents - to kill his own friends. In those last moments, Orthax is driving Percy to corruption. But Percy resists. And when Orthax turns to Percy collecting a soul he has every reason to kill, Percy shoots himself instead. Percy mames himself rather than do the one thing Percy has spent his entire life striving to do.
Orthax knows he... overplayed his hand. So the demon feigns defeat. If Percy had continued to use the pepper box, Orthax would have began anew. But then some small agent of chaos sweeps up the symbol of Orthax's deceptive pact and destroys it; severing Orthax's link to Percy.
The gem in Percy's hand is what whitestone is refined into, which counts as a substitute for magical components. Essentially, it's raw magical energy condensed into a crystal, so now Percy's future firearm projects have the ability to have magical effects. He had to blow a hole in his hand to do it, but he basically leveled up.

Maybe the beginnings of Diplomacy
Percy used Diplomacy, and its shocking.
It's probably more likely diplomacy than a non descript magic-gun interface
Let me try to explain this, while plot armor is a thing in fiction, this show is based off a dnd game and there is no such thing as plot armor in dnd, everything is up to dice rolls, usually someone on deaths door can be picked up by a healing spell, but if they are dead they are dead, there are resurrection spells that can be very expensive to cast, but if you have the materials u can get it done and the person comes back... basically you can whack a mole in dnd if you have the spells and mats (usually expensive diamonds).... Matt Mercer the dm for Critical Role usually turns a resurrection into a skill challenge for his players, to make deaths and resurrections actually mean something... if they roll poorly in the resurrection ritual (usually a three part challenge) the person dies, if they roll well the person comes back... here she wasn't dead but almost dead so it just took some healing magic.
Now to try and explain breaking the deal Percy made with the demon, Percy is left handed and he shot his left hand, his shooting hand... he partially broke the pact by not being able to fulfill it by crippling his hand in the moment, and Scanlan severed the tie to the actual gun by melting it, breaking all ties to the demon (who was voiced by Matt Mercer).
Keyleth didn't tell Vax no, she just said not right now. Also the blush after vex complimented her was more "the person I want to be like is acknowledging me and encouraging me for the first time" than what you were probably thinking lol
The gem in Percy's prosthetic was residuum... Can't wait for season 2 those dragons are WAAAAAAAAY stronger and WAAAAAAY bigger than Brimsythe who is basically an adolescent in comparison to them, in dnd dragons get bigger and more powerful the older they are, and these new 4 are ancient dragons.
So they have plot armour.

Brimsyth the Blue Dragon is an Adult Dragon, those that showed up at the end are all Ancient Dragons.
the Shadow Demon that Percy is wrestling with is one of the weakest types of Demons in D&D

Was great going on this journey with you guys. I may have said this before, but it bears repeating. We Critters have been enjoying seeing people come into this show cold and come out just as excited as we are.
also, quick little side thing guys. this is based on a D&D game, they are speeding things up and trimming the fat on it for expediency, but it is still a D&D game, they are keeping the main story points. there is no such thing as plot armour.
Edit 1: so scanlan is a bard, the idea behind them is they get there magic through rhythm, movement and song. Keyleith as a druid draws her magic from nature. basicelly the herbs have to be magically charged, so scanlan used his thing to do it instead of keyleiths.

This is the big key difference between Demons and Devils in D&D. Devils only goal is gaining the souls of those whom they form contracts with, the end game is their ultimate goal. Demons, on the other hand THRIVE on corrupting mortals and feasting on their negative emotions until they're driven mad and brought down to their level, the souls are just an added bonus.

There's a carpet in Brimscythe/General Krieg's house with five dragons of different colors - the emblem of the Chroma Conclave. There's actually a pretty good look at it in the second episode. Brimscythe was the youngest and least powerful of the bunch.

13:15 in the campaign Keyleth touched the spinning ball of doom and only didn't get studied in like that guy because she rolled a natural 20 to pull back.

In the post-campaign wrap up the cast and fans got to ask questions to Matt and the gang going arc by arc. During the discussion of the Briarwood arc Matt said that had Keyleth failed that save, she's gone. 100% gone, instant death on the spot. Just sucked in without any trace of where she went...until they traveled to the Shadowfell to go stop Vecna (the Whispered One in this show) by raiding his home base city of Thar Amphala (and listen closely to Delilah's spell while summoning him here, she calls it out by name). Once they arrived, Vox Machina would have found the zombified form of Keyleth roaming around the undead realm, having been trapped there all those episodes ago when she touched the sphere.
So now that you've seen it, I can explain a couple of things. The 6th barrel wa sa never meant for Percy. If he had finished his list, another name would have appeared. Then another. And another. Itd be an endless cycle of death so that Percy could have continued to feed Orthax's soul. Every person that Percy killed with that gun had their soul devoured by Orthax. Destroying the gun severed Percy's pact with Orthax that he had unknowingly entered into.
It's a bit of both. The empty barrel *is* meant for Percy, but not for him to shoot and kill himself.
If Percy had killed Delilah, Orthax would have gotten a new meat puppet to continue harvesting souls for him, as you said - by name after name appearing on the Pepperbox. Until the puppet dies of old age or is killed/destroyed. And Percy's soul would be somewhere in the Abyss as Orthax plaything.

Everyone was so excited for that line to be animated, because it WAS on stream and in the game. Slightly different context but still there. Even Laura Bailey, Vex's voice actress, tweeted about it as the Kickstarter wrapped.
Yes the Dragons that are coming are significantly stronger and older than Brimscythe.
You mentioned at 16:34 that they packed a lot into this episode and into this season in general. That is because they spent approx. 40 hours of play time during this arc of the campaign and had only 10 episodes to fit it in to.
Without going to far into spoilers, the scene with Orthax (the demon) was almost completely different in the game. Give it a watch, both versions are great!
I will go watch campaign 1 if I finish campaign 2, but I don't have time to watch 135 episodes worth of DnD which are 4 to 5 hours long sadly.

This show is based off a d&d campaign and Matt Mercer is ruthless.... there is NO plot armor in this show. Anyone can die at any point. The main difference here is that in the stream it was Vex that went down.
Well, very technically speaking, there are _some_ class feature specific plot armors that function more as a “you’ve completed the game/advanced this far, if you manage to die at this point it’s really your own fault,” but as that caveat is left in to begin with, it’s not functionally proper plot armor.
But that is more of a general thing to the game itself than particular to the show.
A good DM can kill any party at any point. And if you don't believe that, test him/her. Players think they're invincible... they're not.
@@ryanbrooks8045 Exactly. All it takes is "oh hey, this lair that you're in has this thing that negates a certain feature or ability you need to survive" and such. Hell, there's a rather infamous moment late in campaign 1 where due to circumstances of where the party was and a certain individual going down to having to make death saving throws, had they died due to a bad roll Matt realizes after the fact that it would 100% be campaign over. There was no recovering from where they were had that character died there.

Anyways the best part about the whole Scanlan throwing the gun, in the campaign, that's exactly what his player did, not because he actually thought it's what needed to be done, but because Sam, Scanlan player and VA (AND DAYTIME EMMY WINNER), is just a major troll and wanted to fuck with Talisien, Percy's VA. Turned out it was the correct move. Absolute golden moment.

I both love and hate how they ended it lol bc in the dnd campaign the dragons did an ambush/surprise attack one after another rather than just all showing up at once, giving that we can fight off 1 dragon, oh two showed up, can we still do this? three Alright we're in dire situation, last one shows up, we're so so dead.
Yeah this flying out of the sun from a distance makes it look like they'll have at least a minute or two to prepare, plenty of time to teleport the important people out of there. In the game they just dropped from the sky with nearly no warning.

The plague mask is real, and it has some pragmatic use too, as well as a mood/concentration tool. It can filter toxic fumes.

Twelve episodes in and the girl still thinks Scanlon is called "scallion," which would mean he was named after a green onion! LOL
Keyleth actualy really admires and respects Vex'ahlia. She sees her as quick-thinking, strong and confident -- all the things Keyleth would like herself to be. So Vex showing faith in Keyleth's abilities instead of giving her a hard time, as she has in the past, means a lot to her.
Everything you said is perfect, but I think Vex _always_ had faith in Keyleth’s abilities. You’ll notice in earlier episodes Vex would call on KeKe to do something in battle, so she _clearly_ sees Keyleth as a powerful and worth teammate, she just didn’t like Vax and Keyleth becoming a couple because Vex has trust issues and _(initially)_ thinks any stranger who shows her and Vax kindness has an angle.

Meet Thordak The Cinder King. An Elder Dragon before WoTC invented Elder Dragons.
Some DnD basics on dragons, there are three types; metallic, gem and chromatic, Metallic are good, gems are neutral and chromatic are evil. The common chromatics are red, blue, green, black and white. Each have a different breath weapon; red is fire, blue is lightning, green is poison gas cloud, black is an acid stream and white is frost. Evil dragons venerate/worship Tiamat, a five headed dragon, one head for each color, that is supposedly the original mother of the first of the chromatic dragons. Different campaigns call her by other names. It is not a trademarked name by WotC, so they can actually use her name in the show if they want, unlike Vecna who was the "Whispered One", Bigby's Hand which is the spell Scanlan used many times. I am not sure who the "Everlight" or "Dawnfather" are, but I am sure they are the trademarked names of some campaign deities, though if I had to guess, Dawnfather sounds like Pelor from Greyhawk as "The Dawnfather" is a way to reference him. Perhaps someone who kept up with Critical Roll can answer that.
The Dawnfather is in fact Palor. The Everlight is Sarenrae.

Just a quick point, Brimscythe, the dragon that slew garrisons of soldiers and nearly spelled the end of our heroes, was at most an Adult Blue Dragon, but in all likelihood still an adolescent. The four that are currently closing in on the Cloudtop are *ANCIENT* Dragons, and dragons get *SIGNIFICANTLY* more powerful with age.

I won't spoil what Percy's new hand gadget does but I will tell you that it's called "Diplomacy". The gun he was working on is called "Retort". He also still has "Bad News" which he finally completes around this time. (There's "Manners" too but that won't come into play until much later.) Percy's weapon name game is on point. They're all very appropriate names and they exude the pomposity that you expect from Lord Percival Fredrickstein Von Mussel Kowalski De Rolo III.

I think the 'gem' in Percy's hand is most likely a piece of Residuum Glass. I know that the guns he makes in the future are magical weapons, so maybe the Residuum provides he magic power.
It's probably the show's version of a device he created in the game, the Diplomacy gauntlet. As for what it does... won't spoil that.

Others have said but in a campaign, which this is based off of, death is a very real possibility. 1 bad turn off the dice not playing on your team and a character can end instantly. They really showcased this with the issue with the doors. For whatever reason this group constantly fails checks to simply open doors or pick simple locks. That's what really made this show special. No one and nothing is safe
Oh, just in case no one mentioned it yet (but someone probably already did at least on last episode): Percy's demon and The Whispered One are two different entities with very different power levels. As in a lower demon and a god different.
I've got a bad feeling those Dragons are here for revenge.

The slight it symbolize against dragonkind though, that is not something that can be borne without retaliation!
So... the problem with the last Briarwood was solved... and the problem of Percy, too... btw: I loved the encounter of Vex with the Rakshasa, also.

The Vax?Vex thing is literally a shirt, lol. Vax is the brother, Vex is the sister. And as far as the D&D campaign goes, yes Vax & Kiki get together, also Vex marries Percy. But they have said what happened in the Campaign doesn't mean it will 100% happen in the show, but I highly doubt they change up the relationship stuff.
They really misunderstood Kiki's blush, she's blushing because she's a shy person, and doesn't handle gratitude well.

A: Cassandra is a rogue, and, canonically in D&D, even the most basic of rogues have the ability to move VERY fast in the space of six seconds... and Cassandra's not a basic rogue. She's on par with Vax.

some people saying "oh no, Keyleth is blushing because she had Vexs approval and she admires her bla bla" Its not wrong but she did have a crush on Vex! They obviously made her blush because she had a crush, they wouldnt put it like that on the show and not mean that. I dont mean that she was in love with Vex, but she def had a crush! Also Marisha confirmed it. Also I think that was their way of making Kikis bisexuality explicitly. Otherwise the public would never know.
