This is so weird, but Groon said No to Grog when he said "It's my heart". For some reason a lot of reactors took that as "oh it's nothing sentimental at all". But it IS his friends. The point Earthbreaker Groon was trying to make is your strength doesn't come from inside you it actually comes from other's in Grogs case that's where his true strength comes from. Like he just said in Episode 9, being big and hitting hard don't make you strong- it's sticking up for the little folk, that's what makes me different from them. :)
I think it's both. Grog's strength comes from the love for his friends and desire to protect, but against their enemies this is not enough. Brute strength alone doesn't cut it. That's why Groon pushed him further. In this fight he needed to learn to trust his friends and see the value of teamwork. (what supports this theory is that Grog got his brute strength back BEFORE understanding the lesson about his friends)
Plus when Grog said "my Heart" to Groon, he didn't really mean it, he was just trying to guess the answer to the question. He needed to understand the the answer before he could make it right, and the first step of that had been admitting he didn't know, so he could get the pay off when he did realise it.
At the arena, Grog meant his physical heart. As evidenced by saying “muscles are a trick answer ain’t they.”
@@LocalMaple Nope, as the quote goes "This is one of them trick questions. You want me to say my muscles or my Rage, but I know it's my heart, that's my real strength." Grog can abstract enough to know it's not just physical things that Groon may be refering to, he is dumb but also pretty wise stats wise. His mistake was trying to use cunning to solve Groon's riddle rather then truth.

Now the answer is his strength comes from the love of his friends. That was the right answer. The one you're thinking about from the monk was when he said no to his strength coming from his heart

@Cap Tin As far as Herd combat, he didn't break any rule. She never directly attacked him or attempted to aid Grog so she wasn't a combatant. She was a prisoner being executed. Herd members captured her, and no Herd member attacked Grog. The only rule in their 1v1 was that it went until one of them died. No other rules were in place, so no rules were broken. It's not a fair fight, but it's not breaking the rules.
@@ShadowyFox_86 Bringing anyone into a 1v1, no matter what their 'role' is (prisoner) before the result of that 1v1 is resolved is still interfering with the match. By your words Grog has even less reason for anyone to criticize him for breaking a 1v1. My point was Grog did nothing wrong by letting VM attack (They mostly targeted the rest of the herd anyway, rather than Kevdak directly)
Grog's strength comes from his love and the desire to protect his friends. That's why he gets his muscles (brute strength) back when Pike is in danger, BEFORE understanding the lesson. This alone is not enough against their enemies however, so that's why Groon was not satisfied by this answer and pushed Grog further. He needed see the value of teamwork and what his friends could add. Only by combining their strengths can it be enough to defeat the dragons .
About Vax’s daggers, in the game at least, he had an item called the Blinkback Belt. Whenever he threw one of the daggers stored in the belt it would reappear in its sheath.
The artifact has space to link 3 different daggers.

@@brianewing5778 NGL, with Deathwalker's Ward already giving Vax a speed boost, Whisper just making you teleport to where its thrown seems weak in comparison. Though the Fear Effect is a good accentuation to Vax's schtick, I hope they change it a bit in the series.
Like a triggered Shadow Walk skill to make Vax seem like Death itself.

His power comes from his friends, thats literally the answer lol He tried to use rage and his heart as reasons against Groon, and the dude said nah then pummeled him.
I had to look down shaking my head laughing. But they got it a minute later.

This was easily the best episode of the whole series so far, for me. Huge ups to titmouse - the whole ep is amazing, but that shot of Percy on the roof with fire behind him is lowkey one of the rawest animated shots I’ve ever seen

Not quite how it went. Grog had 1 hit point BEFORE the attack/landing. He took 20 points when he landed, so it knocked it unconscious.

This fight is so fucking cool and Vax's daggers are not magic, but the two belts he has, one that teleports the daggers back and the other that turns into a snake.
Actually, all three of his daggers are magic. One of them they've lit up several times to provide light. In the stream, each dagger has something different as far as magic. One is poisonous, one lights on fire, and the last is magical sharpened.
@@ShadowyFox_86 yeah, I saw it in the campaign, in the series it's so rare to see that they are magical, that I even forget, the only moment that I remember that it was shown that they are magical in the series, is when Vax uses his fire dagger, when they meet Osysa for the first time.

I love, like Scanlan player, Sam Riegel literally said, that Scanlan is practically Eminem,Dr.Dre discovered Eminem and Scanlan was discovered by Dr.Dra,Eminem has a daughter named Hailie while the daughter from Scanlan is called Kaylie.
I never put together the Hailie/Kaylie thing.
The name Dr. dra is clearly a Dr. Dre reference, but his design and his whole bands aesthetic is much more Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, the band from the Muppets, which fits because Sam was always doing sort of half parodies of classic and modern pop hits.
Funny thing is that Matt admitted in tonight's watchalong that he didn't know this particular setup and Scanlan's daughter being named Haylie was actually a happy accident.
Fun Fact: Scanlan Shorthalt was based on Slim Shady.

This is the best episode by far, the fight, the badass shots of vox machina, and grog raging are some of the best TV I've seen in awhile.
But really though in the campaign, Vex flying in to medivac Grog was a gutsy call that paid off. Pretty epic moment.
There's not enough appreciation for Scanlans song during the fight! Sam Riegel was KILLING IT!!! 🙌🏾👏🏾🎶😌

As someone who saw the stream way before this episode it's amazing how accurate it was. They walked into a situation that was supposed to get themselves all killed and a couple of lucky rolls and the smart teamwork like that PokeBall toss in the sky along with the highest roll possible at that very moment from grog to solidify their victory is what made this even more epic.
On the Dagger returning , there is an item in DND Bracer of Flying Daggers it summons two magical daggers that u can throw and it never runs out of daggers, not sure if Vex is using it but the bracer works in a similar way.
And on Grog's rage that was not a normal rage it was a Frenzied Rage basically doubles the damage but you also take more damage.
And the final attack from Grog was a Natural 20 on a Reckless Attack if remember right that did around 40 to 50 points of damage.
The returning daggers in this case are due to the Blinkback Belt. Each of his daggers are separately magical (fire, Poison, and just extra damage) that just return when thrown.
The Fey Realm is crazy when it comes to time. Hours could pass, or days, weeks, months, years. There's magic that can prevent that temporary distortion, but it's not the most common.
Grog really has a cool arc. He just comes out of what is an addiction to power and finds how strong he can be when he works with his team. Like the Pokeball air drop from Vex is the perfect example. D&D is built around working as a team.
As far as the daggers, they're magic on their own, but the returning thing comes from a magical belt Vax has. They automatically return to his belt or his hand. Definitely a cool detail.
The Knuckles are a cool Vestige. They let you grow in size (close to double your height), plus the lightning damage from the fists. The Herd doesn't really view them as a traditional weapon, so that's why he doesn't take them off. Sadly, the kind of barbarian he is, he only takes half damage from everything (except for psychic damage).
Herd combat is a weird thing. Like the Pike/Scanlan thing isn't considered breaking the rules because they're not fighting Kevdak and he's essentially executing a prisoner when he goes after Pike. It may not be a fair fight, but it's also not against the rules that were set. That's the downside to Grog fighting a smarter and stronger opponent.
And yeah, Grog's strength comes from his friends. He's not just relying on himself but realizing that when he has a team that's got his back, he's a lot stronger.
The dagger thing is that the belt teleports the daggers drawn from sheaths hanging from it back to either the welders hand or the sheath after a short time.

About Vax's daggers, it's the same 3 daggers that come back to his belt. I dunno if they've all been demonstrated, but only mentioning what I remember, one can light on fire - he's used it in previous episodes as a light source.
Technicly, Kevedak broke the rules of single combat when he attacked Pike, as Grog was still alive.
Not really since it's a herd combat, yeah the rules are wonky but kevdak didn't broke any rules

The rage just kicked in Wilhelms remedy, what caused the rage was his friends.

So in D&D grog is of the barbarian class and one of their strengths is going into a "Rage" which is super OP because it cuts all damage dealt to them in half and other stuff that I don't remember rn lol

Scanlan is 70-ish and pike is 30-ish at this moment, gnomes live between 350 to 500 years
He has a belt that does that.

Grog ony rage when his friends are in trouble, so his strength actually come from his friends.
Fun fact. The herd originally had 100 members. Then umbrasyl attacked leaving them with 60 members when this storyline happened in the campaign. So it was grogs 1v1 and 60 herd members vs rest of vox machina in the background.
12:35 Before Grog said "My heart" but he said it in a "I'm trying to be clever but I don't actually know why the thing I just said is right" kind of way lol. He needed a little time and a bit of getting his ass kicked for him to actually learn where his strength comes from.
He was on the right track but he was kind of bullshitting to get Earthbreaker Groon to stop kicking his butt lol. Groon was like, nah, you're not pulling that with me, You're going to Actually learn a lesson, not just mouth some pretty words that you don't understand.
i love that despite having a negative charisma modifier, Grog was always able to talk big smack when he wanted to piss you off.

Well we talked about it and thought about it and thought they would take a unique route. Thought they covered that when he got beat up by the old man earlier in the season.

Rage is a mechanic, not a reason. The challenge, the call to VM, the pokeball tactic and final blow... "At dawn we plan," "We're all cows..." Kaylie's reveal (without the nudity and bondage), all straight out of the stream.

As for the episode, pretty underwhelming that Grog's strength is being able to call his friends to jump his opponent but the fight made up for it.
TBF, Kevdak being a Bear Totem Barbarian makes him resistant to all kinds of damage except for psychic. So he's way tougher than initially thought.
It's not that his strength is in "being able to call his friends to jump his opponent." That's being really reductive. It's the basic lesson of D&D: you win because your team shores up any weaknesses you have and opens up opportunities for you to shine. Like the Pokeball drop, which is literally what happened in the game and is the only reason there wasn't a party wipe.
His strength comes from his friends. That's the lesson. You don't fight on your own, you work as a team. There.
