    USS Boston SSN-703.
    The Barents Sea, North of Murmansk.
    20th of December 1984 - 2000 Hours.
    Today's video is less of a combat report and more of a lite tutorial to help you understand how some of the systems in Cold Waters work and how the UI displays that information. I wont be going over all of the UI elements in this video just the key points that you will need yo be efficient in combat.
    I hope you enjoy!

      MagzTV so I engage a surface ASW fleet and they are heading full speed toward me, I am at about 20 KYD from the task force, I obviously can't just go full steam and expect to win and I also can't get around them fast enough to silently reposition what should I do.

    If your anti-submarine patrol gets wiped out by a single submarine, it officially fails at being an anti-submarine patrol.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      In truth ASW patrols are extremely vulnerable. Most combat simulations I've read about with an ASW fleet hunting a dedicated attack submarine with intent to sink will require a 10:1 ship advantage with air support and should expect to loose half there number in real life at minimum.
      In reality ASW is more intended to spook a submarine forcing it to disengage and leave the area or risk of being revealed. They rely totally on the Submarine not wanting to have it's presence known. If the Attack Submarine is looking for a fight however. . . . well to give you an idea on how dangerous they are a single modern diesel electric submarine (A German 206A class if I remember correctly) was able to sink a US carrier and several of her escorts without being detected during a Wargame a few years back. That's one Submarine vs a Carrier group with ASW escorts and they never detected it even as it was sinking them.

      CountArtha That's why ships sail in a screen, they are there to protect the HVU and essentially be cannon fodder in the event a sub attacks. The real threat to submarines are other attack submarines. ASW surface units are actually very ineffective at tracking submarines, as a sub has to be very close to the surface units for them to be able to track them. Long story, short. There are two types of boats. Submarines, and targets. If a sub wants wants you dead, you're dead.

    Launching wireguided torpedoes straight at enemy combatants when you are undetected is a mistake. You should launch at an angle and the turn the torpedo into the target, so that it appears to come from another location. It was standard Soviet tactics to counterlaunch towards an incoming torpedo, which can catch you if you are indeed directly behind it.

    One thing I do appreciate is that the sound waterfall does encourage visual ID of surface ships. A couple of ships (the Krivak 1 and the Kashin being the prime example) look very different, but have very similar sound profiles (the 4 easiest to detect bars are the same on both classes only the 5th is different). In the above example the ships also have very different capabilities, the Krivak having towed array, better sonar and SS-N-14s (the Kashin doesn't have stand-off torpedoes).

    • @ChaosphereIX
      @ChaosphereIX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if you have to ID them via visual, then you are doing something wrong. Modern attack subs should never get close to the surface unless they are preparing a missile strike.

    Well done It explained a lot.
    Only thing I would change in the game is the response time of the opponent. Example Helos up within 10 min game time or when on patrol 1 helo up at all times dipping for every 2 ASW ships. Active pinging as soon as ASW vessels detect the torpedo; Communication between ASW vessels as to your location or estimated location; One ASW vessel sprinting while the other is listening etc.
    In this case you caught the vessel with a tail in its sprint good job.

    From "Refresher Training" at Guantanamo in 1971 (before it became a prison camp). . . I was on a Coast Guard High-Endurance Cutter - about the same size as a frigate, but a bit slower and much less heavily armed. We had a pretty good hull-mounted sonar but no towed array, and only ship-launched Mark 46s as anti-submarine weapons. The training sub (maybe the last "conventional" i.e. diesel-electric in the Navy inventory) had us from the time we left the dock. AKA no chance in Hell.
    The conventional wisdom was that for surface ships to have a chance against about any submarine you had to have two ships with towed array plus one aircraft. (A helo with a dipping sonar would do.) And ASROC - by the time you got close enough for a ship-launched Mark 46 is was way too late

    Magz, one major note: ships cannot deploy helicopters. The ones on the deck are for decoration only. The helos for each "battle" are set in the game files, no ship deploys or reloads anything. 1-2 for battle groups with up to Kara ships, and 2-4 for groups containing Moskva or Kiev.
    In over 25 finished campaigns, I have not ever seen a ship launch or reload a helicopter. Ever.

    • @MagzGTV
      @MagzGTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's because there is no takeoff or landing animation. Look closer in the future and you will notice that a ship will have a helo on deck, and then later it wont have a helo on deck.
      The helo was deployed from a ship but as I just said there is no animation for it much like there is no animation for the towed array so it's just "pop" in the air.
      Helicopters do have supplies but they act like, actually my best example for how the helo AI works is much like the AI for aircraft in WoWS. The ship the helo is assigned to gives it orders, if you kill the ship and the helo has not received an instruction it will just exit the area once the ship has been sunk, if the ship has given the helo an instruction it will carry it out until it runs out of stores or until it has completed the instruction in which case it will as above fly away and de-spawn.
      And since you want to compare at this point I've finished the 1984 campaign around 37 times with pretty much every stock 1984 campaign boat and a bunch of modded boats as well along with around 6 passes of the 1968 campaign with almost all runs played on elite.

    • @ChaosphereIX
      @ChaosphereIX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not doubt your credentials Magz. If you are making a video, you know what you are talking about. I will look closer in future campaigns.
      However, my experiences are different from what you describe. Even with ships that have a helicopter, they do not launch it. Again, why is there only one helo airborne when there are 3 ships that have helos on their decks? Why do helos never seem to go to reload, they just hover over you not reloading, even when their home ship is still alive? Why are there never more than 4 airborne with a Kiev, Kara, and other helo-carrying escorts in a task force? After playing with the files, increasing the number of ships, sometimes double to their amounts, the number of helos remained the same. Nobody launched more, reloaded any that were airborne, even when I was pinging away, dodging torpedoes, raising radar, surfacing, etc. No matter what I did, they did not launch more helos, or reload the ones that were empty.
      Again Magz, I do not doubt your experiences and your knowledge, I will look into this further. Perhaps my game files are corrupted?

      @@ChaosphereIX How much real time does the scenario take? They may well be shorter than the typical time it takes to recover and re-arm the helo. Also, not every helo embarked may be "up" and capable of flight ops.

    "All hands to battlestations!" What does this mean in-game? I had hoped it meant that it would dump me into combat immediately, at max range. However in my experience it seems to have me spawn very close to the enemy, anywhere from 8000 to 15000 yard range.

    about torpedoes.. since most torpedoes have enough TNT equivalent to a paveway bomb(250kg+of tnt) the boom is very destructive,even one torpedo could "break the back" of even the biggest ships if it hits the right place.. even modern day depth charges have roughly 180kg of tnt, and as we all know getting a direct hit with a depth charge isn't the point of them(although would be a bonus), but to literally pummel the sub with shockwaves to break it apart..and movies aside where you'd find a uboat surviving wave after wave of depth charges is quite unlikely, since with movies it has to be entertaining and not like real war where the munition used is actually designed to kill its target quickly and effectively, its quite logical to assume that the slim chance the sub has to survive is if the torpedo detonates next to it(even then it could cause multiple compartments to flood or worst case scenario the bulkheads to collapse and the sub is instantly destroyed)...OR if for whatever reason the torpedo is a dud and puts a sizeable dent in its hull..but a direct hit, even in the perfect scenario with all compartments shut would definitely cause flooding in some compartments and others would be instantly flooded due to water pressure/size of the damage etc and the buoyancy of the sub would be FUBAR, could blow ballast assuming the tanks weren't damaged, but in the end the sub would eventually be sitting at the bottom of the ocean floor..long story short you do hear of people surviving a gunshot to the head but its really, really, reeeeally unlikely, so 1 torpedo should easily down any sub no matter the size..and if it does somehow survive,most of the crew would be dead and the sub so burdened with water, you could count it as a kill since itll never see the surface again

  • @DWPL89
    @DWPL89 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Those certain areas of the submarine are almost 100% of said submarine, thus double hull. :D Well, screw you can safely hit. The problem was with MK48 having the biggest warhead size in the game (funnily enough, the only torpedo in history that WELL described on the web) and that kind of made balancing between subs and surface really hard to do. Now they almost all go down with one hit, safe for capital ships.

    • @ChaosphereIX
      @ChaosphereIX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mk48 does have a large warhead, and the largest in the base game, but that is because in the base game the Soviets dont get the 53-65M, the 65-76 "Whale," or the uplevel warhead for the USET-80. Soviets have some big damn torpedoes meant to sink carriers in one or two hits. Also, the Spearfish has the same size warhead as the Mk48 too. Regardless, surface ships vs a modern sub is a lopsided engagement anyways.

    • @DWPL89
      @DWPL89 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't understand. Mk48 has roughly the same warhead size in real kg (circa 300) as any other torpedo in the same weight class. But because on some sites its explosive material is literally mentioned in name and kg equivalent is 600 kg of TNT therefor in game it is twice as effective as USET-80. In fact even if 65-76 would be in game, going by available sources, it would have only about 750kg warhead (equivalent of TNT). Thus balance is difficult. So in realism mod for CW value for Mk48 is lowered from 550 to about 450 kg.
      Also 53-65M is normal 533mm torpedo (unlike 65-76, indeed 650mm giant), I do not see why its warhead would be bigger and afaik there is no such thing as uplevel warhead for USET-80. Some just assume it uses similar explosives as Mk48.

      It's a guy making Modern Submarine sims on his YT channel. He is basically THE guy to go for Dangerous Waters content - the gold standard of Modern Sub Simulators. He's been promoting and streaming Cold Waters for so long now, I wouldn't be surprised they gave him a chance to shine here.
      That said, it was one of the most basic concerns from the very start, normally you would have the voiced notifications from your officers, like in all sub or ship sims. In Sub Command or Dangerous Waters it was hard to play without them, especially when you are focused on one or other aspect of the game, like looking on map, or watching over surface via periscope.
      aaand... it contributes to immersion, but yeah, I hear you, it might get cheeky given the commentary.

    hmmm....In real life I'd call You very cowboy'ish captain... my first shot would be on bearing about 270-280, under layer.... then when fish had a bearing to target about 40-50 bring it to course to target (still he knows nothing about torpedo and you) and as close as possible to him move fish over the layer and acivate sonar on it. Why? You still have cable contron on it, torp under layer is much more hard to detect, when its finally detected - enemy captain sees is from wrong direction so even if he shots his own "thats all i can do" torpedo - he shots it in completely wrong direction, and finally IF he even do radio-com and pass your suspected position to his friendlies - he gives wrong one.
    Anyway - love your Vids and greets from Poland (Europe) - keep up a good work!

      +10 means they will probably detect you, anything under +10 you are safe. To gain a contact you/the enemy need +10, and to keep it the signal needs to stay above 0. So only two numbers to keep in mind: 10 and 0.

      The numbers represent the decibels above and below the noise that ship makes/ the ambient noise in the environment. Negative values mean that the ship cannot hear you at all as the noise around or the noise of their ship is louder than the noise you are emitting, while 0 means are on the threshold of being detecting and you need to tread lightly otherwise it will detect you. As chaosohere says ships and subs alike will usually detect you at a value of positive 10. The values go from -50 to +50 however this limit can be exceeded.

    i really am against the use of mods for various reasons, but some of the mods i see for this game really should just be checked for balance and realism and implemented into the game. the reallism mod though sounds bad though, if a sub is designed ti be able to take a torpedo hit provided it doesnt hit certain places, but the reallism mod just says fuck it lets ramp up the chance of a one hit on your sub regardless of where it hits, thats not realistic and so the name "realism mod" is stupid and misleading

      Actually, a one hit kill is more likely than not. Damage effects cascade. Often beyond salvation. Remember the conditions the sub exists in. High pressure salt water, really bad for electronics and electrical systems.

    "Kiloyards" broke my tiny tiny American brain. Because of is wacky metric-English system nonconforming. On one hand it's like, "hey why the hell not?" But on the other hand it's like, "how dare you!" One thing's for sure, no matter how obvious it may be, that is literally the first time I have ever heard someone say it in my life.

      Yeah, Because nautical measurements for most world shipping both military and civilian are done in nautical miles, yards and knots.
      That's just the way it is mate.
