Oh Paper Mario 64, what a wonderful game it is, all the time and care put to it shows that. This game was my first ever rpg and everytime I play it I feel joy beyond comprehension.
Despite how much TTYD, Super, Bug Fables and other great indies expanded its concept and ideas, this still is my favorite Paper Mario.

What's appealing about the system in this, TTYD, Bug Fables, etc., is that with all of the relatively low numbers involved, it's much more feasible than in other RPGs to plan out entire battles in your head beforehand.

If Nintendo games are manufactured as some special "nintendo only" peripheral (Cartridges,DS Games, Wii U cards, gamecube cds) then the publisher's have to pay liscensing fee per unit made. Blew my mind its smart I guess maybe a little malicious as it can't be that much but I'm sure it adds up.
Also anyone remember gpoing to cheatplanet to look up the recipes for this game? We had just gotten a printer as kids and decided to print out all 54 pages on Paper Mario. Good times :)

Unfortunately, my Sega fanboyism at the time caused me to avoid the N64 (when it was new) like the plague, causing me to miss out on the first Paper Mario, so when new Saturn releases dried up in 1998, I switched to PlayStation! My anti-N64 stance was so big that when I had a meltdown over a PlayStation game I rented in April 1999, instead of switching to N64, I decided to get my Mega Drive back instead! I eventually dropped my anti-Nintendo stance, leading me to get a GameCube in 2003! Got Paper Mario TTYD for my birthday the following year (to make up for my US import Nintendo DS not arriving in time), and during the first exposition before the game begins, I imagined Luigi saying his lines in his 90s DiC voice! (Mama Luigi did NOT factor into this, it was just the voice I most associated with Luigi)

SMRPG and Pokemon Blue were my first forays into JRPGs... And FF7 with my old pal, but I didn't own a PS1 at the time. I think Nintendo's Mario quirks and whimsy, paired with platformer-adjacent gameplay and timed hits, made the genre accessible to a lot of Westerners. And at the best time too: Square's golden age. Paper Mario ensured that Mario RPGs would stay.

Really wish Nintendo, Tanabe and Intelligent Systems would go back to what this original vision for the series was instead of focusing on advanced visual effects with realistic paper materials, almost exclusively core Mario characters with very strictly regulated designs, the few original character having to directly relate to paper, and gameplay that reinvents itself every single game. You made a point to say that PM64 went out of its way to stick to the core Mario cast but I disagree. It focused on a traditional Mario plot but it had plenty of original characters AND even the partner designs are not allowed in the newer games now. Compared to modern Paper Mario, this game is original and creative af in terms of its characters. They're all organic and fit nicely into the Mario world too.
