Because the top part of the cake must be hit 5 times, and recovers one hit when it attacks a team character, in other words, with only mario you will be stuck in the battle, no matter how much level you got.
I actually loved the fact that the candles required such a mechanic. They put did it on one boss, and didn't have gimmicks like that on every boss. So having one boss first way through made me enjoy it a lot.
There is not a point of no return in the Smithy Factory. You can go all the way back to the entrance no matter how deep into the factory you are. It is true that after you beat Countdown, the room won't have a way back initially. But if you leave and return to that room, you CAN go back.
I wish they'd included a way out of the factory dimension right before the Gunyolk boss. Or near that Toad merchant. A portal back to the overworld map. Because the way back out is GRUELING!
I love how peach is characterized in this game. It's almost like the movie, like you said she's more rebellious and more willing to take risks. Which are characteristics people usually give to Daisy and then complain that Peach has no personality 💀
The first time I ever played the game I was stuck at Mario's Pad, not knowing you had to walk to the little patch of grass jutting out to leave the area
"...And she also can hit enemies with a frying pan." Wait, wait, wait. A blonde princess in a pink dress that uses a frying pan as a weapon...I think Disney has some explaining to do!
Bowser is genuinely one of my favorite Mario characters, and it's all because in almost every single Mario RPG, he's just such a fun character. He's always goofy, kinda dorky, so full of himself, and yet always has his intimidating presence. He's so lovable, and SMRPG started that trend. Speaking of amazing characters in SMRPG, I feel like Mallow doesn't get enough love. He goes through such a character arc and genuinely has the most interesting story of the playable characters imo. I wish people respected him more. He'll always be my favorite Frog Prince.
@@tantacles Hey, guess what? By the power of the Randomizer for this game, you can just not select any of the randomization options, and just check the options of starting as Mario, and exclude all 4 other characters so they never join you at any point, and the randomizer fixes so you can defeat that BUNDT cake solo; it makes the candles not light back up once they go out. I'm going to do my first ever series of videos with Commentary in them, going through the "Vanilla" game, true solo, just Mario, with no punching bag other characters ever turning up. It removes story moments to make it more straightforward to just gameplay, but still, for the purposes of seeing the challenge, I think that's fine. Now, just because I think watching grinding is boring, and I don't edit what ever I upload, I enabled the Triple XP option, so the flow doesn't have to bog down anywhere too much.
Having played so many Super Mario RPG randomizers, I knew from the very start of the video that Cake was going to be the run-ender because of its gimmick. Sure enough, lol. It was interesting to see how the rest of the game unfolded at least.
The fight against Jinx 3 would have been interesting to see. I also thought attack items would have had a more prominent role in this challenge especially the Star Egg.
I knew right away when I saw the title I was like well you can't take party members out and we all know that its the equivalent of magikarp in mandatory double battles for solo runs. @@tantacles
You can get 100 coins on the Midas River, but not the first time you go down. There are frog coins on the waterfall in place of regular coins that time, and they don't count towards your coin total, even if you get every one. To get 100, you need to fight the current on the waterfall a lot, crossing back and forth and even scaling against some rock walls once or twice to get to the other side. On the barrel run, you just need to follow the pattern where the most coins are, and change lanes at the right time. And if you hit a single fish, your run is messed up.
The Banjo Kazooie music totally made me giggle during the sunken ship part lol. Awesome run! I'm super looking forward to playing the remake when it comes out, as I never played the original. Thanks for another awesome video!
Hopes for the remake: All magic works like jump in that it gets better the more you use it. In various ways besides just damage though. Like hp rain gains a Def up boost and evade boost to them. Rework characters some. Bowser gets some buffs. Along with Mallow. Hard mode. The game wouldn't hurt to have some new challenges as well. Mario getting costumes. Captain Falcon, Kirby, Link, Ness, Samus. And so on
Man I can't wait for the remake. Nostalgia usually doesn't ever hit me, but holy hell is it full force with the remake. I'm so excited - this and Dragoon were the two big RPGs of my childhood. I guess Mega Man X Command Mission (super underrated RPG) also can be in that lineup, but that was more during my teens.
@@avengersassemble887 Damn right. I need more Marino in my life. I've thought about it, and personally, I want a sequel that takes place right at the beginning of the Elf Wars. You can see the transition period in the design between the X-era and Zero-era reploids - I want that explored even more.
Great video! Can't wait for the remake. I'll be like a kid on Christmas when it drops~ Funny anecdote, I wasn't old enough to pick this game up when it launched (I was born in 1990), but my best friend's older brothers had a lot of SNES games. They didn't have Super Mario RPG but I rented it once and loved it. So we tried to find it at a local flea market (I was probably 9 or 10 at this time) and we stopped for lunch before we got there. During that time we were at lunch, someone went to that flea market, sold their Super Mario RPG copy to a vendor there, and I was able to buy it. Perfect timing. If we hadn't stopped for lunch, I wouldn't have found it.
Just beat this game with my 7 year old son. It was fun going back to memory lane with this game and it got us excited for the remake coming out in November :D Loved your video btw, that's a hell of a challenge haha.
SMRPG is my favorite game of all time and I love seeing challenges this to make it harder. Awesome video! Keep up the good work! Also Dry Bones can actually be killed with any magic attack including jump.
Random: I remember my friends told me to put the lazy shell defense on Peach, because you want to keep her alive to revive and heal others. Well, I put the lazy shell defense and attack on Mario, and he was really strong.
First reaction was "Yeah, duh. The game's super easy." Then you reminded me the cake existed and...well...right. Yeah. That. Maybe if this were Legend of Dragoon, where the speed stat determines how many turns you get vs. an enemy's, but nope. One turn for each round of combat per character.
Nice video. :) I adored this game as a kid and it’s nice to see I’m not the only one, based on the overjoyed reaction to the recent announcement of the remake.
Never thought i'd type this but for you Tantacles i'll make an exception. #ForeverAloneMario Edit: Fun fact about the Hotel, pay for the highest cost room and stay like 10 times so you overstay 9 days that you can't pay for. You then become the bellhop and you can make Flower Tab/Box Tips every so often from the guests, This is how i maxed to 99 FP back in the day. Not many know about that feature most just break their own record at the whack a goomba to max FP.
I have done a Mario RPG run of each character (Hacking them in form the start while also having my friend code it so you can only have one person in your party. It is slightly glitchy as you still have three party members on screen but they don't have any turns and cannot be attacked.) If you get knocked out the game softlocks.(Since you still have party members that the enemies cannot attack) second iteration had them enter with 1 HP and poisoned, so they faint on their turn. Both were a run ender at bundt So yeah, instead of working it so that one fight gave you proper stats, we just removed the top half of the cake. And then Dodo happened... In the end, we just redid the whole valentina fight. It took him a lot of programming but he got something that actually worked out very nicely. It felt refreshing too. Johnny also challenges you 1 on 1 right from the get go. Super suit also unlocks at the same time as Lazy shell. (He put it in a chest in the same area. since in a solo run with another other than Mario, you can not get the Super Suit. Since you can get it BEFORE lazy shell, he put it with Lazy shell. (We were tempted to put it even earlier, but in the end we just kept it there.) So I did it with everyone, I could not beat it with Bowser or Mallow. Peach was tough but i pulled it off. Geno was about as hard as mario. We also added a bomb shop in moleville. Locked until Johnny is defeated. You can buy bombs, they are pricey, (More than they were in Seaside town) but you can also purchase rock Candy's for 600. A few more edits we made was a new map area which is the entrance to smith's factory (the assembly line area) and s springboard to the world map (Go clean up everything you have not finished yet, like Culex, And Culex second Battle. (We did a rematch. He has 9999 HP. And when you bring him down to triple digits he fully heals (Once) along with getting all 4 crystals back.(Which are buffed) (He gives you Uber Charm, which is Qhartz charm, just boosts your attack more and gives you a passive heal.) We added a boss rush as well. Just outside monstro town. You don't get anything special (Not even experience) from it but it is a cool challenge. If you do beat it you do get 999 coins. It only goes to axem rangers (and only opens after you beat them) I have sadly lost the hack years back when my computer got fried. I have reached out to my friend to see if he still has it but he has told me if he does he does know where it is. (And he is not even sure if it is accessible. Originally it was on a floppy disk. But he thinks he put it on a thumb drive.) It was a passion project for us. My ideas and his programming skills, along with some ideas of his own (Like a boss rush) (Oh, and attack scarf is not Mario locked) Final note (We added an item to the game that boosts the speed of the user by 250. We gave these items to party members 2 and 3, so they go before enemies and faint.) We also later added some other items for characters in Bowser's keep. Items and equipment, which we later removed. Also don't feel too bad, i have only done 100 super jumps twice in my life. Once on console and once on emulator. I usually just gamegeine teh item into my game now as i don't like doing the 100 super jumps. (I make the attempt every time, but i usually fail.) e
Whoa I had no idea Jump increases in power the more you use it. I've always just dropped it pretty much as soon as I get Fireball. I'll have to use it more in the remake
Indeed, I knew it got a little bit more powerful with each use until it capped. I didn't know the cap was so High though. I never bothered as I got super jump pretty early
I remember playing this game in my childhood and literally only upgrading HP and still managing to beat the game. I didn't understand why you wouldn't want to max out health 😂
found you recently and I've really been enjoying your style and the stuff you cover! you put a lot of effort into your work and it shows in the quality
i like your challenges, not only because are entertaining but the music selection from other rpgs is sublime, you know where to put every theme to match what is going on stream =)
honestly your knowledge of the game (before the remake made all this knowledge obvious) is quite impressive, such as knowing that there is jump elemental type or that using jump many times slightly increases its strength and getting secret op items as you go. it's a shame that you didn't get star egg tho cuz it would make this run a lot easier and less tedious cuz you wouldnt have to kill every enemy 1-by-1
My favorite way to grind in Barrel Volcano is to get the Star Egg in Grate Guy's Casino (which is a grind in and of itself) and reroll the purple Spiny encounters until you get a formation of three of them plus two rock things (might be the other way around?) and then use the Star Egg to wipe them out because they all have less than 100 HP. Quick and gives good exp. Also it's way faster to get Kerokero Colas by doing the music stuff at Tadpole Pond. The juice bar there will start stocking them for 200 coins after you teach Toadofsky all three melodies (from Frogfucius's scroll, the Moleville miners and the dancing star from Monstro Town).
Who'd have thought that seeing a snazzy shirt would lead to finding one of my favorite creators in a long time. Tentacles, you're amazing and your content simply rocks. 🤙
Something I like to do is, right before Belome 2, there’s a star in the temple followed by a second star you can buy. I get them both, then die on purpose to Belome. You keep your exp and can get both stars again and do it as many times as you want. I mean, you probably don’t want to do that for this particular challenge, but it’s good to remember. :p
Great video! I really enjoyed it. I looked back through your other vids, and they're not exactly my usual fare, but you've got my sub anyways for your shout out to Moon Channel.
I don't validate this as a Mario-only run. If the other characters are present, they're absorbing attacks meant for Mario. If you want a true Mario-only run, you have to somehow use exploits, if there are any, to bypass getting the other characters.
2:07 Did you forget to equip Mario with the Shirt and Jump Shoes? According to Amazing_Ampharos, Croco's bomb inflicts 15 HP damage onto Mallow equipped with the Pants and Antidote Pin, and Mallow is physically frailer than Mario… On that note, it would be better to simply spam Fire Orb until Croco cries, "Uncle!"-4-5 times should be enough. 4:12 Since Bowyer can cast Sleep, wear the Wake Up Pin. Also, Bowyer locks buttons based on what your party does. Under the rules of the Single Character Challenge (SCC), according to Amazing_Ampharos, "If you use either two physical attacks or one physical attack and one magic attack, Bowyer will lock Y. Otherwise, he will lock X. Note that 'magic attack' does not include HP Rain. Mallow mostly doesn't need to think about this, but Mario and Geno, if ignorant of this, will likely perish as they discover that the X button is perpetually locked. Be sure to use these tactics to unlock X when you need to use a Mushroom." 5:11 You clearly forgot to equip Mario with the Punch Glove. Did you also forget the Mega Shirt and Work Pants? 7:04 One thing you neglected to mention is that Punchinello is normally immune to Jump (unless Mario is equipped with the Jump Shoes) and can cast Sand Storm exactly once. Buying an Able Juice (from Rose Town) before this battle will allow Mario to wear the Jump Shoes and keep using his highest damaging attack. 8:07 The Goodie Bag is found at the top floor of Booster's Tower. Once obtained, your "dummy characters" may no longer defend. It may also be worth fighting Booster for fun, then resetting to win the valuable Amulet. 8:18 Every solo character should equip the Wake Up Pin for the Knife Guy and Grate Guy battle since the latter can put you to sleep. Bundt can also do this, so the Wake Up Pin will be needed there as well. 9:00 Bundt (33:17) and Valentina (15:39) are the two mandatory exceptions to the SCC. In Amazing_Ampharos' version, you may equip two "designated hitters" with armor but no accessories. Mario, Geno, or Bowser may have Mallow heal them during the second phase but not the first or third. I was able to fight Bundt with two characters since Bundt can only relight one candle. As long as one character hits Bundt, it loses a candle; if two, then two candles. Thus, two characters are all that is needed to defeat the second phase of Bundt. Once Raspberry is left, then return to the SCC rules. 9:18 Mario, Geno, or Bowser playing a SCC should bring Yoshi Cookies on a return trip to farm Max Mushrooms from Sacket. 9:54 See Ya is only a waste of an item slot. The Scrooge Ring is more useful for Ultra Jump enthusiasts. 10:25 Greaper is immune to Jump, but otherwise, everything in the Sunken Ship has weak Magic Defense, so Mario's Jump is still your main means of fighting. 10:32 Dry Bones is immune to physicals but is one-hit-knocked-out (OHKOed) by any Special Attack, so Jump works against it. 11:10 The Safety Ring is critical to the SCC; the latter half is much more difficult without it. 12:49 You neglected to mention the Jinx sidequest. According to Amazing_Ampharos, Mario should be able to defeat Jagger and the first two Jinx battles. If determined, Mario could also defeat Final Jinx since Jump remains very effective. Be sure to defeat Final Jinx before Barrel Volcano, since the Jinx Belt (+12 Speed, +27 Physical Attack, +27 Physical Defense, Instant Death protection) is very valuable against the lesser monsters and the Axem Rangers. 13:57 The Safety Ring reduces the effectiveness of many enemies in Nimbus Land to nil. 15:39 For the second exception to the SCC, Amazing_Ampharos allows a fully equipped Bowser (or Geno if playing Bowser's SCC). 16:44 I personally banned the Lazy Shell (weapon) during my run; it is that OP! Keep the Lazy Shell (weapon) on your first Mario SCC, then restrict yourself on the second run. 17:50 Mario's turn is normally before the Kaiser/Czar Dragon's, which would force him to take the full damage from the Helios. If you equip the Amulet, Mario's turn will be after the Czar Dragon's, so use Ultra Jump to destroy the Helios. The Safety Ring is the safer option, while the Amulet is a more aggressive one, which could enable you to save precious Max Mushrooms. If you are really aggressive, consider the Jinx Belt, which could allow you to blitz Zombone. 18:31 The Axem Rangers are beatable at Level 17 as long as you come prepared with the right equipment (Jinx Belt for Mario), items (a Yoshi-Ade and a few Max Mushrooms), and strategy. Axem Pink only uses Petal Blast if another Ranger is retired, so defeating her first removes it and her healing out of the picture. Axem Green is easy to smash, and a single Jump retires Axem Yellow. The Jinx Belt's huge physical defense buff enables you to better withstand Axem Black's bombs, but avoid his Spritz Bomb counter against specials by sticking to physicals. 21:26 With the Lazy Shell (weapon), Mario will not need to use the FP restoration from KeroKeroCola that much, so farming Max Mushrooms from Sacket (Star Hill), Fink Flower (Land's End and Bean Valley), or Ameboid (Factory) is a more efficient use of your time and resources. 22:12 Every time you enter Bowser's Castle after Barrel Volcano, the contents of the six doors are predetermined. Under the rules, you may use the Save Point to peek inside each one until you know which ones you wish to clear. The Battle Courses are rather resource draining and can leave you weakened for the Kamek/Magikoopa battle later on. Amazing_Ampharos recommends that if Mario SCC wishes to clear one Battle Course, then clear the one that begins with the Terra Cotta battle. 23:45 Any part of Exor (eyes, Neosquid) that is not defeated (and allowed to restore both HP and FP) will eventually run out of FP and cease to be a threat. Unless you have a quick means to eliminate Right Eye (Exor's right, your left), leave Right Eye alone to limit its use of Dark Star. Fortunately for Mario, he can OHKO Right Eye with a single Jump, leaving Exor vulnerable to Jump or the Lazy Shell (weapon). 27:26 Smithy's Tank Head has Magnum, which forces a choice between the Jinx Belt and the Safety Ring for any SCC. Physical characters like Mario would prefer the Jinx Belt's physical upgrades. Just be wary that Smithy's Treasure Head becomes a factor. Mute and Poison are not a big deal. Able Juice or Muku Cookies can treat Fear. If cast with Scarecrow, then just Jump until you are KOed or survive. Mario can exploit Smithy's Treasure Head's weakness to Fire with Super Flame (be sure to restore HP and FP before a potential Scarecrow). 29:11 Safety Ring, Yoshi-Ades, and Max Mushrooms are needed by Mario SCC for Culex. Because Culex and the Crystals' Magic Defenses are weaker than their Physical Defenses, Special Attacks that target multiple enemies are the most efficient means of defeating them.
Thanks for this great writeup! I've never heard of amazing ampharos, but it sounds like we have different rules for solo runs. I'll have to take a look at some point!

While I agree with the overall message about tipping vs. a living wage, it actually _does_ serve a purpose, in this game. If you tip the toad bellhop every time he comes in and tell him you had a great night's sleep when you're checking out, he'll give you another free gift, which can occasionally be really good.

4:44 Sounds a lot like the gym battles in Pokemon Indigo League. First couple badges are obtained pretty early on, but then several side plots take place and leave the seventh and eighth badges to be pushed aside until the next Pokemon anime, Adventures in the Orange Islands.😉
i was going to do mario-only last year when i replayed this game, but i gave up when i found out that the game revives all dead party members after every battle...chrono trigger does the same thing, and it's SUCH a pain to start every battle by killing them again. it makes sense to do it your way, with just wasting their turns....
@@tantacles i wonder how difficult it would be to find/create a game mod that doesn't change anything except to remove the auto-revive? or maybe it would be possible to do it with a gameshark code...like the opposite of invincibility, it would just flag specific characters as permadead
Cathy? I remember Birdetta being the name she likes. But then, i think this is a different Birdo entirely than the one in Mario 2. Loving the FF6 music!
You can solo with anyone. Kind of. Enemy fp is a lot less than you think. Now, no time hits and no equipment makes the entire game a bit bored. No recovery. No treasure boxes in area till the next star. Use basic equipment. Level up stats that, shouldent help character that well.
As always i say if you need to use other party members (I.E. solo fights in LoD for example) then it is not a viloatiom of the rules because otherwise the game is unwiniable due to issues that cant be over come So if using Bowser is nessary for Dodo brian and boob lady then the extra help on the cake is nessary
The Dodo fight literally only uses your middle character and Mario can't be moved so I was wondering how he would handle that. Usually I stick Bowser in the middle and Poison Gas Dodo and proceed onward.
`20:20 The reason defending didn't work on the Breaker Beam is because you already had a buff to defence. If you hadn't buffed defence, then defending would've had an impact on the damage taken.
Actually you can beat the cake with just mario you would just need to do a ton of grinding to get ultra jump or ultra flame I can't remember which you get first but both moves can hit multiple targets on the same turn. So if you wanted to do all that grinding it is technically possible to beat super mario rpg with just mario.
You should have only used the Jump attack in every fight that you could. The jump damage boost carries over from one battle to the next. That's how speed runners use it to their advantage in low level speed runs.
I think gimmick fights are always the exception. If having to use another character is a run ender then I think alot of RPGs would be unbeatable with a single character. Imo you did it!
Great video I it was very entertaining question have you play Skies of arcadia legends? It would cool to see a challange run with only Vise (the main character) though theres a moment were you dont play as him but you can do the same thing you did with bowser on this run
technically not "only mario" though since the other characters draw the fire from the other enemies away from mario, to do this properly youd havta make a new hack (which there are some really good ones btw like mario rpg: armageddon) still though your accomplishments on this run are impressive

Hard mode. The game wouldn't hurt to have some new challenges as well.
Mario getting costumes. Captain Falcon, Kirby, Link, Ness, Samus. And so on
These are all great ideas. How about Rosalina as the hidden character that you find on star hill?
the Mario rpg remake is the game that has me considering buying a Switch, so thanks for making me want to play it even more
Do it
It was during the race up Booster Hill that I realized that this run was going to be impossible.
Bowser is a goddamn treasure in the Mario RPG games
Except for Sticker Star.
Finally, someone who appreciates command mission
A command mission enjoyer I see
Command Mission was lit, it was X9 to me and I want a continuation.
@@avengersassemble887 Damn right. I need more Marino in my life. I've thought about it, and personally, I want a sequel that takes place right at the beginning of the Elf Wars. You can see the transition period in the design between the X-era and Zero-era reploids - I want that explored even more.
Thanks for the video, I haven't seen any of mario RPG before so this was really interesting.
Great video! Can't wait for the remake. I'll be like a kid on Christmas when it drops~
Funny anecdote, I wasn't old enough to pick this game up when it launched (I was born in 1990), but my best friend's older brothers had a lot of SNES games.
Lunch: officially the most important meal of the day.
STEP ASIDE, BREAKFAST!
Just beat this game with my 7 year old son. It was fun going back to memory lane with this game and it got us excited for the remake coming out in November :D Loved your video btw, that's a hell of a challenge haha.
Who is your son’s favorite character, though!
SMRPG is my favorite game of all time and I love seeing challenges this to make it harder. Awesome video! Keep up the good work!
Also Dry Bones can actually be killed with any magic attack including jump.
My fave of all time, too! Is it November yet!?!
00:58 I love Chrono Cross. that's the song from the Zelbess.
All magic, including jump damage, one shots dry bones. Dry bones are invincible against physical damage but die to ANY magic damage.
Thank you!
Random: I remember my friends told me to put the lazy shell defense on Peach, because you want to keep her alive to revive and heal others. Well, I put the lazy shell defense and attack on Mario, and he was really strong.
Too bad that the cake single-handedly sabotaged any hopes of single run
😭😭😭
Dry Bones die to any special attack. I remember just jumping on them and them dying.
First reaction was "Yeah, duh. The game's super easy."
Then you reminded me the cake existed and...well...right. Yeah.
Top 5 games of my life, no doubt.
Mallo wasn't a Tadpole? I've been lied to my entire life.
Yeah, he’s actually a bus
Wait whaaaaaaaat?! You can bounce back the eggs back at birdo?!
I swear i keep learning new stuff about this game even today.
Loved the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest music in this video!
One of my favorites
It gets a bad rap for being too easy but nobody can deny that battle theme kicks ass.
Never thought i'd type this but for you Tantacles i'll make an exception. #ForeverAloneMario
Edit: Fun fact about the Hotel, pay for the highest cost room and stay like 10 times so you overstay 9 days that you can't pay for. You then become the bellhop and you can make Flower Tab/Box Tips every so often from the guests, This is how i maxed to 99 FP back in the day. Not many know about that feature most just break their own record at the whack a goomba to max FP.
😂
I have done a Mario RPG run of each character (Hacking them in form the start while also having my friend code it so you can only have one person in your party. It is slightly glitchy as you still have three party members on screen but they don't have any turns and cannot be attacked.)
If you get knocked out the game softlocks.(Since you still have party members that the enemies cannot attack)
second iteration had them enter with 1 HP and poisoned, so they faint on their turn.
(We were tempted to put it even earlier, but in the end we just kept it there.)
So I did it with everyone, I could not beat it with Bowser or Mallow.
And when you bring him down to triple digits he fully heals (Once) along with getting all 4 crystals back.(Which are buffed) (He gives you Uber Charm, which is Qhartz charm, just boosts your attack more and gives you a passive heal.)
We added a boss rush as well. Just outside monstro town. You don't get anything special (Not even experience) from it but it is a cool challenge. If you do beat it you do get 999 coins. It only goes to axem rangers (and only opens after you beat them)
I have sadly lost the hack years back when my computer got fried. I have reached out to my friend to see if he still has it but he has told me if he does he does know where it is. (And he is not even sure if it is accessible. Originally it was on a floppy disk. But he thinks he put it on a thumb drive.) It was a passion project for us. My ideas and his programming skills, along with some ideas of his own (Like a boss rush) (Oh, and attack scarf is not Mario locked)
Final note (We added an item to the game that boosts the speed of the user by 250. We gave these items to party members 2 and 3, so they go before enemies and faint.)
We also later added some other items for characters in Bowser's keep. Items and equipment, which we later removed.
Also don't feel too bad, i have only done 100 super jumps twice in my life. Once on console and once on emulator. I usually just gamegeine teh item into my game now as i don't like doing the 100 super jumps. (I make the attempt every time, but i usually fail.)
e
You can beat the cake battle with only Mario if you master the super jump. Unless I'm mistaken.
I’m far too unskilled for that to ever happen but if you have a video I would LOVE to see it
Only logical thing now is to do only mallow in the remaster
Lol all the Chrono Trigger music in the background :)
Always!
If you keep one of the little sharks alive during the johnny battle, the battle is much easier.
This actually makes it harder in a solo battle because Mario gets fewer turns per round so more chances to miss action commands
@@minostaurian “why do I need Jump when I have SUPER Jump” 🥲
I remember playing this game in my childhood and literally only upgrading HP and still managing to beat the game. I didn't understand why you wouldn't want to max out health 😂
Are you Chuggaaconroy? lol
He is called SUPER Mario for a reason :3
I've been staring into Marios cold, dead eyes for half an hour and
it changed me. I will never be the same.
If it’s brown it might not be an eye
But it winked at me.
when i was young, i beat the game by just filling my entire inventory with pick me ups. seemed pretty busted. can't do that on a mario only run, lol.
found you recently and I've really been enjoying your style and the stuff you cover! you put a lot of effort into your work and it shows in the quality
Thank you!
i like your challenges, not only because are entertaining but the music selection from other rpgs is sublime, you know where to put every theme to match what is going on stream =)
Thank you!
honestly your knowledge of the game (before the remake made all this knowledge obvious) is quite impressive, such as knowing that there is jump elemental type or that using jump many times slightly increases its strength and getting secret op items as you go. it's a shame that you didn't get star egg tho cuz it would make this run a lot easier and less tedious cuz you wouldnt have to kill every enemy 1-by-1
My favorite way to grind in Barrel Volcano is to get the Star Egg in Grate Guy's Casino (which is a grind in and of itself) and reroll the purple Spiny encounters until you get a formation of three of them plus two rock things (might be the other way around?) and then use the Star Egg to wipe them out because they all have less than 100 HP.
More money efficient to get 5 kolas at the inn. 😉😉

I think you did it :) the cake is a very reasonable exception to the rules
Why should it be an exception? It can't be skipped, it's an impassable roadblock on this ruleset.

I should have done it XD

Doing this challenge but with mallow or bowser ought to be interesting. Or i guess any of the other members too
I think we’ll get there. Gonna try to do at least one of these before the remake.
@@tantacles yassssss!
I don't validate this as a Mario-only run. If the other characters are present, they're absorbing attacks meant for Mario. If you want a true Mario-only run, you have to somehow use exploits, if there are any, to bypass getting the other characters.
Opinion acknowledged.
I set the rules for the challenge, then I do the challenge. Then I make a video about it.
@@tantacles that's true. It's your run so it's your rules. 😊👍
There is no point of no return. You can leave no matter where you are
Eyyyyyy that would have saved me like 3 hours XD
Be sure to use these tactics to unlock X when you need to use a Mushroom."
5:11 You clearly forgot to equip Mario with the Punch Glove.

I hadn’t thought of this but it’s quite true
i was going to do mario-only last year when i replayed this game, but i gave up when i found out that the game revives all dead party members after every battle...chrono trigger does the same thing, and it's SUCH a pain to start every battle by killing them again. it makes sense to do it your way, with just wasting their turns....
Yeah… I think that’s how I’ll be doing runs of any game where characters are revived post battle in the future.

You can solo with anyone. Kind of. Enemy fp is a lot less than you think. Now, no time hits and no equipment makes the entire game a bit bored.
No recovery. No treasure boxes in area till the next star. Use basic equipment. Level up stats that, shouldent help character that well.

@@tantacles ah also! Just got Discord Yesterday (my friend got me to) so your the first channel i have followed!!

I was surprised it waa feesable (i had a feeling the cake would be an issue). Nice challenge though!
As always i say if you need to use other party members (I.E. solo fights in LoD for example) then it is not a viloatiom of the rules because otherwise the game is unwiniable due to issues that cant be over come
So if using Bowser is nessary for Dodo brian and boob lady then the extra help on the cake is nessary
Appreciate the support!
The Dodo fight literally only uses your middle character and Mario can't be moved so I was wondering how he would handle that. Usually I stick Bowser in the middle and Poison Gas Dodo and proceed onward.
He broke the rules when he gave Bowser braces
Bruh, you’re not wrong, but Mario wasn’t able to be in the battle. By this metric, I also broke the rules when bowser attacked dodo
Always going to love the Chrono Cross and LoD music inclusion. Thanks for the video and the descriddly-do!!
`20:20 The reason defending didn't work on the Breaker Beam is because you already had a buff to defence. If you hadn't buffed defence, then defending would've had an impact on the damage taken.
Ohhhhhhh
Actually you can beat the cake with just mario you would just need to do a ton of grinding to get ultra jump or ultra flame I can't remember which you get first but both moves can hit multiple targets on the same turn. So if you wanted to do all that grinding it is technically possible to beat super mario rpg with just mario.
You should have only used the Jump attack in every fight that you could. The jump damage boost carries over from one battle to the next. That's how speed runners use it to their advantage in low level speed runs.
I maxed it out eventually!
@@tantacles awesome video by the way.
@@speedy_brennan Thank you! I'll be streaming the mallow only run on Wednesday if you happen to be around.
4:07 How embarrassing it must be to lose a fight to a doll.😅🧸
Yup. Run failed. Geno ended it.
I think gimmick fights are always the exception. If having to use another character is a run ender then I think alot of RPGs would be unbeatable with a single character. Imo you did it!
I mean, thats kind of the point of these things, if you can easily win the game with 1 character, why would you even use the other ones?
If it can't be skipped then there's no exception, run's dead. Being a gimmick is irrelevant there.
Then he should probably just stop trying and making challenge runs right?
I was NOT expecting the Anetra cameo 😭
Are you telling me I've waiting 2 weeks for an upload and this is what we get!?!?!

Great video I it was very entertaining question have you play Skies of arcadia legends? It would cool to see a challange run with only Vise (the main character) though theres a moment were you dont play as him but you can do the same thing you did with bowser on this run
I adore skies of Arcadia legends
technically not "only mario" though since the other characters draw the fire from the other enemies away from mario, to do this properly youd havta make a new hack (which there are some really good ones btw like mario rpg: armageddon) still though your accomplishments on this run are impressive
Very true. I don’t hack, but I really want to play the rando
