  • Sizzling hot gamjatang is hearty and savory which makes it always popular at the dinner table. The soft fatty meat picked from the gaps between the bones is especially tasty. Full recipe: www.maangchi.co...

    Maangchi! My dad died earlier this month and my family was devastated. The day after his passing I went to the local Korean store to get ingredients and made several dishes - one each night including cheese dulbak. They say that food is love - well I put my heart into these dishes. I believe that in a small but significant way your recipes helped my family to heal. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything that you do.

    I used her recipe several times over the years. It’s solid. The first few times I eyeballed the ingredients and the timings. The measurements are important and steps are very important. Do not skip cleaning the pork bones. Don’t guess the spice measurements. Gamjatang one of those weird soups where it has a lot of complex flavors that need to be balanced for it to be truly outstanding. It’s not like beef stew or chicken noodle where you can eyeball everything. It can vary immensely from person to person or even the same person cooking it twice. I have yet to find a gamjatang that was as good as the one I had in Korea outside Cp. Humphreys in the villa, but this one is a close second!

      @@Maangchi I'm curious? When you were in Toronto, was it in the 80's?
      That is when I had my first Korean food at a restaurant called Ichiban, near Christie, if I recall correctly. Yes, that sounds Japanese, but they offered 'Korean and Japanese food' to attract the public.
      Is that where you had 'the best' Pork Bone Soup'?

    I've been following your show for a long time now and have even influenced my family to watch your videos. I will always be amazed in how much Korean culture put so much respect in every ingredient they use, but especially in vegetables. Even a vegetable main dish gets paired with vegetable side dishes. Watching your videos also reminds me of how my Mom cooks also! Coming from a Filipino household, I'm sure many people can agree that nothin beats homecooked meals. So thank you for sharing your delicious Korean recipes! 👍

    Fun fact for those who kinda know some Korean:
    some of you might know that Gamja감자 in Korean means potato. You (and even some Koreans) might think that Gamja tang means potato tang(soup), since this dish has potatoes in it. However, Gamja here does not mean potato but refers to the pork bones (actually not sure if it means the meat trapped in the gaps between the bones or the bone itself...).

    There was this Korean restaurant near my place that served delicious gamjatang. My boyfriend and I loved it so much we ate there almost once a month. We went back 2 months ago only to find out that it was closed, permanently. I was sad because it was the only restaurant that serves gamjatang. Most of the restaurants here specialize only in samgyupasal, kimchi jiggae, etc but not gamjatang. Good thing I found this recipe! I tried it today and it almost tasted like the one in my fave resto before, only better! Thanks to Maangchi, I can now make delicious gamjatang at the comfort of my home. 🤗

    I just made this, and the soup came out soo delicious!! I honestly think that the perilla seed powder is absolutely essential... the creaminess really rounds out the whole soup.
    I definitely suggest adding ingredients in to taste as well. I ended up adding a little bit more fish sauce, doenjang, gochugaru, gochujang to make the flavour more bold and spicy.

    • @Maangchi
      @Maangchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, congratulations! Yes, perilla seed powder is very important in this recipe!

      @@Maangchi Moslem cant eat pork. So maybe we can substitute with cow bone instead?
      And i still dont get, whats the point to rinse the Nappa cabbage in cold water after being blanched.

    • @crypticlolita
      @crypticlolita 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fajarloa2109 I think it's to control the amount of water in the soup since the cabbage contains a lot of water itself. I didn't blanch it, and just threw it in with the seasoning sauce and green onions and it turned out fine!

    • @제정은-f7j
      @제정은-f7j 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fajarloa2109 We always use pork bones for this recipe but I don't see why not!
      The napa leaves are blanched because the leftover water contains a strong smell that overpowers the stock/stew.
