      As an artist (digital painter) who is just learning Blender now, I relate with the frustration. But one neat thing I experienced when learning how to paint digitally was that repetition, not quality, was key. As long as I could force myself not to refine each project too much, and just say "this looks like [insert favorite inappropriate word] but I accomplished my goal; now let's do it again", over time, it really paid off. My first digital painting in Photoshop took something like 30 hours, and over about 2 years, I got it down to 8-10 hours. Your mileage may vary, but I think it's universal that we all get better with practice. :)

    An evil part of me actually considered giving this a thumbs down, just so I could finally be the first at something. But this was brilliant. I've been considering creating some robotic characters, and I would have had a heck of a time because I automatically would have used automatic weights and spent hours weight painting to get it to look right. But this absolutely makes sense! Thank you.

  • @alejmc
    @alejmc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This one was epic. How does assigning the bone vertex weights on one side of the mirror knows to assign the weights on THE OTHER BONE at the other side? Coming from 3dsmax, I don’t think that would work out, a mirror symmetry is an exact copy and shares all the values.
    Also, it has dawned on me, that I actually have bought and used a few of the sound/music packages! I didn’t realize it was that same “Imphenzia” from the unity asset store until I dug deep down to the beginnings of this channel.

  • @StormWolf01

    I've never worked in blender, or in anything related to 3d graphics, but i just want to say that it's frustrating to see someone do in 10 minutes what would probably take me one full day (if i had to guess). And i'd be proud if the result was anything like this!

  • @dongiovanni1993
    @dongiovanni1993 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. And some observation.It's hard for blender to calculate an armature deform. even if there are clean 1.0, 0.0 groups. For such robots it's cheaper to have each part as separate object parented to the bone (no armature deform modifier). If you want to have a lot of them in the scene, and you want to animate them in real time it might be a solution. If it's not the case, just ignore it. =) To copy rigged one use alt+d with all the parts and the rig selected. It will preserve the relationships. After that just assign a new action to the rig (if needed). It saves memory a lot, because each mesh is stored just once.

    Actually, the Locust could destroy some of the larger mechs pretty easily, when playing a defensive mission. Though that's only because the A.I. was terrible, because it moved directly toward your base and allowed a locust to get behind the enemy mech and take out its legs.
    EDIT: By the way, I really do appreciate your videos. I like the fact that when you say it's going to take ten minutes, it actually takes ten minutes without a time lapse or skipping parts of the process. I have seen many videos where it states that they're doing it in x minutes, but that's only because they speed up the video. Plus, I also like how your models are not overly complex. Thank you.

    Now I'm really interested in walking animations.
    I know nothing about how to do it at the moment, so I'm curious how you get the character to have a walking anim, a starting anim, a stopping anim, and a jumping anim blending all together seamlessly. The example that comes to mind is GTA V. It has adaptive animations, to a small extent. Face-up and face-down _lying-down-to-standing_ animations or the ability to land on your feet when ragdolled. The game is designed to find the most suitable animation from a selection and using it appropriately.
    I'd like to make that myself.

  • @ChrisAllenMusic

    Terrific tutorial, as always!
    Question: around 7:45, when you create a lower leg, the first thing you do is to duplicate a face from the upper mesh. Is that so that you can have a detached set of vertices to parent to the lower leg bone? You seem to also do this step for other independent parts, just want to make sure I'm understanding...

Somehow, i forgot to shift-D to make the hand (i was too extatic using E and S). When i selected the arm and pressed L, it selected all the faces of arm & hand. And had to assign a new vertex group myself.

    How did the newly added vertices get animated? Shouldn't you need to assign them to bones as well?
