I did the boomba plate for a 2017 WRX and a rock got caught in the plate because the cover couldn’t be reinstalled. Once I removed the rock, everything worked fine. Just something to be aware of if you have issues with shifting after driving dirt roads.
That is worse than I feared! So is there really no mod that Billetworkz can include to allow for the old dust cover to go in? Could part of the old dust cover be machined off so at least you still have some protection?
Good video. Best one I’ve watched on the subject. When I ordered my 2021 WRX last year I ordered it with the factory short shifter. I like the feel of it and wonder how it compares. I would like to have a little bit shorter shaft. What do you recommend for that?
The factory short shifter is pretty subtle. To shorten the shaft you would have to replace your factory short shifter with an aftermarket one like Boomba or Billetworkz. Both of those will drastically shorten the shifter itself and will have shorter throws than the factory short shifter. Replacing this plate will shorten the throw but not shorten the length of the shifter.
idk what i did wrong, but after putting the plate and bushing in, i put everything back together and now i have a rattle. It won’t rattle when the clutch is it or if i downshift and let the clutch out slowly, but if i downshift regularly it rattles like crazy.
I suspect what was described as a "cotter pin" often called a split pin, actually was a different kind of fastener. Probably an e-clip or something similar. A cotter pin has to be phisically bent to keep it in position and shouldnt be used again for that reason. Someone correct me if I am mistaken. A bit of a shame that the shield had to be abandoned. What a rip off the STI shifter was.
Not being able to put the shield back over the shifter plate makes me not want to consider this, all it takes is one stray pebble getting up in there to give you a half day of work
Hi I was wondering which rims those are on the wrx in the video also could you send me the rim dimensions and offset also the tires size etc would greatly appreciate it love the set up

the shifter plate is held on with two roll pins. Did you remove both before attempting to remove the plate? If so, sometimes they get stuck on there with age. A blast of penetrating oil should do the trick!
Any update on keeping the cover off or having a solution to make it fit? I ordered the Billetworkz complete kit and I’m nervous about doing the plate now.
I'm not a fan of notchy gearshifts but I hate the wiggle in 1st and 2nd. Do I just install a shifter stop and call it a day or would the full kit remove the notchy shifts?
The full kit will be a lot more notchy. The shifter stop is great to remove the wiggle. if you don't like notchy shifts but want a shorter throw, I would do one or the other; either the shifter itself or the plate. The plate alone will give a shorter throw, make it slightly more notchy but definitely tolerable because the shifter itself stays at factory height. Doing the shifter alone will shorten the throw and be a bit more notchy but a little more noticeable because the shorter shifter wont give you as much leverage. The full kit will drastically shorten the throw, and the shifter height which will make it much more notchy compared to stock.
@@ImportImageRacing thank you so much for that explanation! I do like the factory height so changing the plate would be the best option for the shorter throw for me. And worst case it's not a huge expense to change it back ☺️ thank you!
The pin is actually two separate pins, one inside the other. Remove the smaller internal pin first, followed by the secondary pin. Two separate punch sizes are needed.
just did mine had a similar issue. hit it for alost an hour, inner pin came out outer pin wouldnt budge...pb blaster is your friend. soaked it and let it sit for an hour, then came right out. 2016 wrx
I swear without a lift this is the worst install Ive ever had to deal with. Getting the stupid pin back into the plate and aligned is the most frustrating shit. This seems like a design oversight not providing an aftermarket pin or a heat shield for this plate. I hope it's worth it when its finally done, I am ready to throw a hammer through a wall after hitting this stupid pin only for it to fall out.
one or the other in terms of bracket or plate. www.importimageracing.com/products/kit-shiftshort-1-import-image-short-shift-kit-solution-subaru-wrx-2015-2021
You can certainly do both, just a matter of preference! Each one will give you shorter crisper throws. The plate wont change the height of the shifter however the shifter will. Combining both will make it very short and notchy. So if that's your thing you can do both!
Cobb shifter plate the cover fits back over for people worried about that
I highly recommend the full kit! Every shift was perfect and much better for both daily and occasional “spirited” driving…. Billetworkz hands down.
Thanks for your support!
I totally agree with this comment 💯
I wish Acuity made a shifter assembly for these. Had one on my old Si and it was by far the best shifter I ever used.
Way better tutorial than the billetworkz TH-cam channel. That guy in their video is a freaking goober.
We like him! But glad you enjoyed our content 😊
@@ImportImageRacing y'all were very detailed in every step. Ay good job fellas, take five! 😂

@@KuyaPow626 I think you could possibly get it fabricated. It’s worth a shot or at least contact Billetworkz for more insight.

I am a little nervous to torqueing down the transmission carrier. Any recommendations? I've heard people back the torque specs down to be safe.

I swear next video is going to be how to install a sequential transmission 🤣
LMFAO
Will this get rid of the mushy shifts between 2nd and 3rd?
between that and the upgraded shifter it definitely helps tighten it up to how it should be!
Im unable to remove Shifter plate pin, been punshing for hours any tips?
The pin is actually two separate pins, one inside the other. Remove the smaller internal pin first, followed by the secondary pin. Two separate punch sizes are needed.
Any tips if that roll pin won’t come out even with a quality punch? Worked it for 20 minutes and didn’t budge

What is the rationale for NOT re-installing the dust shield?????????????????
It doesn't do a ton, so we elected to not re-install it.

No

I only have jackstands, can I get under there easily enough? This is pretty deep under the car which is intimidating work.
What did you end up doing? I'm also feeling intimidated by these installations, having to go deep under the car.
Why not just do the whole kit?
We will be installing the short shifter at some point but just showing the plate as a separate video for the people who only want the plate.
