A much needed tutorial! The circular clip for the shifter ball is supposed to be turned in situ, after which it and he shifter come out together. Installation is the reverse- put the clip around the ball and drop both into the receptacle, then turn to lock in place.
Unlike all the American videos that go on and on and don't show what you need to see, your video is funny and demonstrates what fails and how to replace it. I will be removing the gearbox to replace my clutch, rear main oil seal and starter so won't have the aggravation of getting that pin out of the metal selector cup. Keep up the good work fella.
*Best thing I did to my M3's was fit a Samsona sprung shifter but as you rightly say, you need to replace all the bushings etc. Zero slop and insane precision. Also fitted uprated gearbox mounts. It was that good I could almost go in dry!*
Hey Danny.🖐 Just a few quick notes here. The mekanik put in all the labour to make the GB nice and precise again and I'm sure the driver will be pleased. But, the highest regards go out to the writers. These chaps are in top form!👌 This one was action packed with more twisted references than an episode of The Simpson's and our favourite man from Canuckistan combined.👏😂 There's a lot wrong in the world right now with high inflation, incompetent politicians, etc., but if nothing else, you should find solace in knowing what you do brings a lot of joy to at least one old grumpy bastard.👍😉 Cheers, Dan.
The plastic socket for the shifter has two tabs on the side that locks the piece into the two slits on the alloy piece. So they come out pretty easily if you give them some taps with a screw driver to rotate it clockwise. You can see this on the old socket you knocked out
Being able to watch someone take apart their car and get a first hand view on what it looks like gives me the confidence to try myself Please don’t ever stop !
That white ring you were hammering to get out actually has to rotate to install/uninstall. If you haven't rotated to install, than you can pull it out on a spirited shift very easily. Check it! Unless it is different from the M3 one. I,ve done that on my e46 M3, switching the lever with a 330d one and M5 knob. Feels great!!
I manual ZF swapped my E36 two years ago, and i did this + an Ebay short shifter. I used a poweflex oval bushing instead of the OEM. The short shifter makes it even better. Gear shifts are crisp and nice. None of that wobbly gearshifter you typically see on older BMW's because the bushings are blown out. You'd be stupid not to do this if you got the transmission out. Get a ZHP gear knob from a 330i ZHP as well, its weighted.
I just purchased an E46 M3, how difficult was it to change the gear knob? I bought the car to learn how to wrench, look forward to your response. Cheers 😊
A job i keep putting off but really do need to do is this! My sons recently bought a similar car to mine but with only 70,000 miles on it compared to my 160,000. The shift quality difference is very noticable!
Thank you Big Dan. Out of all the other manual transmission removal videos, yours is the only one that walks us through the removal of the pin in shift mechanism. That was the final release peace for transmission removal.
How the hell do you get the pin into the “dodgy bastard” that was 40 pounds? My pin is damn tight and impossible to press through thej hole any advice?
If you have the box out at some point you can get the bits to fix the detents from BMW. Makes the lever return to centre just nicely! Good fun video. Cheers
The facelift has two of those pissing clips at the front. I changed the front rubber bushes for poly as well and lost the will to live trying to get the pins back in while on my back on the drive while it rained. What I’d give for a ramp and being able to work inside ☔️ The white plastic part twists in and out if you get a screw driver either side until the locating tabs line up.
Haha I couldn’t get the ball out either smacked it out with a hammer and it bent the bottom of the rod like a flat spot in it. Replaced the ball socket put it all back together cleaned and greased the lot and it feels brand new now honestly feels like a gated manual it’s brilliant I think bending that bush also helped 🤣
@@dannyDC2 yeah to be fair were used to the BMW tax now so can't complain really. Just now I'm thinking do I spend the extra 30 quid n get the trans tunnel mounted one 🤔

Ive never known any different , both my e46's have been similar, so Ive just gone out and found mines got about an inch of play, So thats another thing added to my list of things to fix.
Most folks just break the plastic parts on the cup to get the ball out in the car. :) Everything I have read/seen says the ball should be lubed up before putting into the cup.
Well... "feels crap" is an understatement 😂 i heard a bang going from 4th to 5th, shes now stuck in 5th but gear stick is not connected, cant change gear and it just spins around in circles.... will this video help me fix that? Aha
@@dannyDC2 thanks I think I’ll stick to oem then.. my gears feel pretty stiff getting into gear on my e36 especially going into reverse and when I pull it back into neural it makes this loud DINK sound what could this be if you know? Thanks
Dear friend I took my e39 520i to a mechanic to check my position sensor but when I left suddenly I noticed that 5 th gear WS loose just sloppy going into 5th now I don't remember anything like that I think it had some tension you know like reverse would it be easy to like switch mine for some other my car has 112,000 kilometers so still healthy I got a feeling some monkey bus has taken place I mean how hard would it be is it possible I want to be sure before I do something crazy
So my 77k mile M3 is a ****ing pig to change gear, especially when it's stone cold. Is this the fix? I wouldn't say it was remotely sloppy, just hard to go from neutral to 1st and 2nd.
Thanks for this Dan. Got an E39 with a sloppy shift, so considering doing this (on floor!). Would vagueness always be down to the linkage, or could it be down to something within the gearbox too?
I can't seem to find your video of you doing this on the M3 Dan. Few questions - did you do the same job, ie drop the exhaust, prop and box to get to the clips?
Can't believe I first attempted this job 9 months ago and back looking for advice... How did you pull the c-clip off the brass looking bush at the front? Is there a specific tool you used? I've currently got the car on axle stands and the cats off. Fitted new shifter and white ring shaped Bush and the rubber rear one. I didn't do the 2 at the front as couldn't see how to get the flex disc off. I'm at the stage of putting it all back together as it is better just with thay 545i shifter, but it's bugging me the last 2 bushes are sat there telling me not to give up.
done this without taking the exhaust and driveshaft off. I'm not recommending it! If you have the possibility, get that shit out of the way and lower the transmission a few cm if you can.
I'm hear for the mr2 spyder but I am committed to Dan and his epic battle against entropy 🤣
Googling a lot of words lately but that's a good en

Didn't know Dr disrespect had an E46! Top video mate good to see your back 👍
Watching a Danny video with Hendrix in the background? Ahhhhhhhhh yeah!!!
I'm not a BMW Ultimate Driving Machine enthusiast. But I enjoyed every second of this one Dan. 😂
This is a very useful video and I plan on doing this this summer. Thank you for helping me keep my 97 Z3 still on the road. Cheers and God bless
Hilarious and informative - will bring plenty a BMW fan to the channel seeking a toit shift.
Watched the knob removal back at 0.25x speed. Was not disappointed.
Funny episode!! Personal favourite was when you removed the linkage near the start exclaiming “get out ya bastard”. Tickled me 😂
Good to see your knob is nice and stiff now.

My 530i is coming due for a new clutch. I think this is a must do while I'm in there!
How many Haynes spanners is the difficulty ? after seeing someone with a level 3 BTEC I do not recognise that as a training level
Honestly i put a $28 ebay short shift unit into my e46 m3 and i am blown away how solid and acurate it has been.

I think you rotate the white shifter base bushing to remove it and insert and rotate it to lock it in place.

for anyone about to do this don't use tap out the ball/shifter and plastic cup you spin it and it slides right out together

Lets make it feel good. yes sir. this is love.
Need help !! I've changed all these parts but my shifter sticks to the right so goes straight into 5th and I don't know what to do 😢
ive done that on my mx5. it was very much worth it as well. fully restored the superior shifter feel of a mk1 mx5. no need for short shifters.
