- Transplanted my single port 1600cc Type 1 for a 2056cc Type 4 in my 1971 Karmann Ghia using Joe Cali's recipe. Without his manual I would never had attempted it....for those who are thinking about it.....do it!! You wont be sorry...I laid a 3foot patch of rubber leaving my garage on my very first launch!!!
Great video! I found a 69 Ghia that was heading to the scrap yard to be crushed. My son and I are working on it together 👍 That motor would get us in to much trouble!😂✌️I have some videos up and will be putting up more as we progress. Hope to see you on the road 🛣️✌️
RTLEE1, I did a quick online check and, good news! They are still available at Jake Raby's "the type4store"....check website at: type4store.com/products/cooling-system-accessories.

'thanks !
I still have my conversion manual from Joe from 20 years ago. I have a Raby alternator stand and will build another type 4 soon. 1911 cc turbo
all that drama an ya aint gonna start it? uh.... doooood..... unfair!
Joe Cali's Upright Conversion Manual has instructions, measurements and drawings on how to chop a Type 1 generator stand and weld a base to it. I don't have the equipment or knowledge to weld aluminum so I opted to buy this unit.
I believe a pancake T4 sucks in 810 liters of air per (I think) second. SC and Super 90 Porsches did 310. Do you know how much air is drawn through your engine?
I am thinking of buying a Karmann Ghia Convertible, if I can find a really nice one! I've had two 914's with the 1.8 L and have driven the 914 2.0L, wow the 2.0L in a Ghia sounds like a no Brainer. In my opinion, this combination could put the Ghia in the Porsche 356 League. I love the idea!
Thanks! I would never go back to the original 1600cc. I actually have a back-up 2.0L in case anything happens to this one. The Ghia weighs less than 2000lbs so it moves really nice with the rebuild components; I think I picked the perfect cam, compression ratio and carb/exhaust combo for a decent street engine. I plan to post a new video to show everyone how nicely it starts, idles and accelerates. Thanks for your comments!
Besides the engine bolting on to the gear box using four bolts. is there extra support at the front of the engine, ?
Yes, I added a front engine support. I have another video posted on TH-cam titled "Porsche 914 Type IV Bus Engine Mount for Karmann Ghia". I used a VW Bus front engine mount "moustache bar" with modified hangers. I really recommend the front engine support because the extra torque could twist the transmission mounting fork.
I need my engine to look like this one
where did you get the alternator stand??
I got from Jake Raby's Aircooled Technology. I bought this about 4-5 years ago, I don't know if he still sells components of his DTM kit or if he only sells complete packages now. I got the degreed Type 4 pulley from cip1.

what carbs and manifold did you use ? kadron bosals???
+RTLEE1 Yeah, these are Kadrons, with 40mm throttle bodies, and 32mm venturies, custom jetting set up by Jeff at The Kaddie Shack. With my set up I could have gone with 44mm/34mm but I wanted more crisp low end response at the sacrifice of higher RPM HP. If you go with Kadrons, phone The Kaddie Shack & Jeff will use your specs (engine size, comp. ratio, camshaft, geographical elevation, etc) to send you the right size jets. The manifolds are "shorty" Kadron manifolds I found on The Samba.com.
+OldJetJock Oldjetjock ok I will do that when I get to that point I looked at their website and they had variety of options I like your throttle linkage too ,,I have the manual as well I don't need or want webers mine is just going in a dune buggy I like your set up
