    This is all well done; cleaning all that stuff out, etc. I guarantee all the tins are full of crap that will hamper air circulation, hence overheat the engine. After all the gunk you found at the bottom of the crankcase and the knock we heard when you first started it; I advise not to run it again to prevent catastrophic failure and breaking internal parts.

      @@CTmoog What is baffling is that it had the knock when you first started it; then after you serviced it it went away for a while and then later it came back! Re the cross threaded spark plug you can use a Helicoil when you service the heads for the rebuild. There’s still hope. And those German Bosch plugs might just need a cleaning and can keep on ticking.

    Clean the injectors, adjust the lifters, don’t tear it down just yet, I’ve had 914’, and 911’s. The exhaust leaks not helping, engines not getting correct back pressure. Timing off too. ADJUST BEFORE TEARDOWN!

    you should remove the injectors SNAP THEM WITH A 9v battery and shoot some carb cleaner through them then reinstall them to see if they start working. Then rebuild the engine. Injection system seems to be working. DONT HOLD THE BATTER ON THE INJECTOR SNAP IT!!!!! they run on 1 to 3 volts. putting 9v to them will ruin them if you hold it on there. Also spray electrical contact cleaner on EVERY injection contact.

    Definitely rod knock! Time for tare down and rebuild with Darin. I’m going to have to do that on my 914, soon, but she’s my daily, until I can get my VW Beetle across the finish line, for real. Every time I think I’m done with the restoration, something else breaks or leaks or fails. I’ll never do another restoration. That was hell and too expensive. I should have bought somebody else’s “finished” project, it would have been less expensive.

      @@CTmoog Rosie is a 1975, and was a 1.8 EFI.
      She was converted to Weber carburetors when the PO could not make the 1.8L EFI work on the 2.0L engine he built. Searching the internet, one will discover the EFI for 2.0L is different than that of the 1.8 & 1.7.
      Because the 2.0L EFI was hard to find and more expensive than converting to Carburetors, Rosie is now carbureted.
      Im glad you’re working with Darin. I wish I could afford to have him build me a 3.0L flat6 Porsche engine. Because of the problems with my bug, I’ve learned the line bore is one of, if not the most important parts of rebuilding the motor. As for any other options, reliability & durability are top on my list with 914’s, because the transmissions suck, and it’s too easy to stuff it into 2nd when going for 4th at high load & RPM, thus spinning a bearing, tapping a valve on a piston, or if you’re lucky, just breaking a valve spring. I’d love to have a g50 or even a 915 transmission in mine. Dreams…

    I LOVE this!!!! My first car was a 1969 VW Type I (Bug) and many of my friends had similar cars (my rich friend had a Karmann Ghia and did body work, but no engine work). We rebuilt and modified the engines several times to make them faster (mine was faster than a Porsche 912 in a race MANY decades ago). I considered buying a 914 (really wanted the 6 cylinder), but I was tall back then and could not fit. This brings back a LOT of memories and we used the 'How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive' manual', since there was no internet. We had issues with the 'soft' metal in several engines and had machine companies do a 'heli coil' thread repair. This brings back a LOT of memories. THANK YOU!

    CT, you took quite a bit of time trying to get that engine running in the car when you first picked it up. Why didn’t you change the oil before trying to get it running? You should have run a compression test on it before attempting to start it. The way you’re approaching this really is the wrong way. Also, if you don’t already have one, get an automotive lift. That will speed things up for you pretty dramatically 👍🏻

    Did you start it up after you changed that last plug? It had a bad miss. Also did you clean the fuel injectors? Lastly that knock might be the clutch or something like that.

    • @CTmoog
      @CTmoog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey James, no I didn't. I will try that and clean the injectors. Maybe that will help. It seemed like the knock wasn't there at first and then it was really bad...But there was a few mints where it sounded pretty good.

  • @christophersmithsonian3350
    @christophersmithsonian3350 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Try replacing that bad plug and also a cogged injector. Or a few clogged injectors will cause a knock. Grab a cut piece of garden hose to put to your ear and to each cylinder to figure what cylinder is knocking LISTEN through the hose like a Doctor to your ❤

    Hi there, Mr.CT.. Playing with fire,ah? Yooo, just adverted danger, grinding clamps on the engine wet in fuel, car and your shirt wet on the back... man, you're playing really hard! I'm not such a risk taker as the situation might become very entertaining instantly.. and you might start some wildfires in Florida... that would be quite a change.. =) Also I like to live dangerous, just in anoher way.. We are all red under the skin! Nice experimenting, but it really runs on 2 cylinders. I think it's time to crush the nut and crack it open. Who knows what you might find inside?! Let it be a surprise. =) Keep on!

    8 dollars for a can is nothing. We pay around 20 for that amount of oil here. I put full synthetic in my oldtimer. Like the previous three owners did. Works like a charm apparently on my 78’ volvo. It’s always nice watching your videos, sometimes trying some stuff. And in my head I’m already like oh no, that’s not how it should go. But then I remind myself that I know jack shit of most of the other things. It’s fun exploring and trying things out you haven’t done before. Not being too perfect about it on TH-cam. Love that. Keep going, learning a lot from you as well

    This is the luckiest guy! He soaks the floor with gas from numerous leaks, and could have saved some time locating the leaks if he had reviewed his own video! He then get his butt soaked! Fortunately, the whole thing didn't go up in flames when he used the cutting wheel on the clamps! Yes, he is one lucky dude. I'd laugh, but burns are no fun, and hard to get over. As to the rough running, Auto Pilot has some good points, and the injectors could be the source of your troubles, or the plug that you may not have changed, since it didn't want to come out. Also VW's, which is what this engine is, are notorious for valve adjustment neglect.

  • @garymallard4699
    @garymallard4699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fuel injection is high pressure...compared to carb pump...clamp the damn lines...return you put in a container....high pressure flow for fuel injection!
    Yes you get some pressure before injectors and returning to tank...

    Considering it had been sitting for decades, had an improperly pressurized fuel system, and an audible massive vacuum leak, that engine actually ran relatively well. I'm surprised that it ran at all.

    Weren’t you already aware of the engine running like shit and having a bad knock. I knew that before the show even started. You could have saved the 4 gallons of gas that you leaked all over the floor and across the room when you were staring into space. Light a match!

    Are there any bare connectors or metal that can short out under that fuse panel sitting on your car??
    stick some rubber or anything non conductive under it to be safe...make sure nothing can ground out to body ....you don't want to cause more problems...a floor mat or truck mud flap is enough to do it...cardboard too...but that is flammable..lol.

    You better quit while you are still alive. In all this time you still haven't thought to pull the valve covers or check the compression. Probably stuck valves.
