    I find that the BMW's Gear Assist Pro on my 2017 GS does perfect downshifts, including into first, but when going up through the gears it is not that smooth unless I am 'giving it the beans'. I have learnt that when nonchalantly going up through the gears it is best to just throttle back a hint on each up shift. The combination of the Assist Pro cutting the ignition and me cutting the fuel makes for perfect gear changes. Hey Ho.

    7000 miles on the 2018 K1600B with Assist Pro, great addition to the bike. No more helmet banging with shifting.

    I tried it on the S1000XR and really like it. I've had a couple of quick-shifters on a K1300S and S1000RR, but never tried the down-shift system until now. And you're right, it's great. I don't feel you have to make particularly firm upshifts, but the engine does need to be accelerating and not cruising or rolling off to get the smoothest shifts.

    I have to say, on my 2016, now with a grand total of 2500kms, -my replacement R1200GS- is still running in. The Quick Shift was never used by the 1st owner I can feel. Many bikers order it, but are frightened to use it. First few times can put you off!… False all sorts. Touch the clutch in QS, or make the wrong throttle action and things go rather wrong. I learned but it did confuse me (and the computer!) and I’m not sure the gearbox loved me either! Once you’ve got the idea, it’s great to work with. I never QS into 1st or out of it. I use QS for 2 - 6, and VV.
    Anyway, round 2 , I’m running that bit in now too , very gently. It’s actually smoother than my late 2017. Yes, the blipping throttle action on going down gear, does raise a smile. It’s a very quick double de clutch! LoL. What an old fashioned term. I think we modernise that by ‘blipping the throttle’, same as you would do on a fully manual bike! Love it, QS, as do I love Cruise, Rain Mode, Amazing GPS to balance out the unreadable clocks (accept the tachomoter!) but I like the dash. Hill Start Assist is also really great! & all those modes. The Ultimate Motorcycle has been made. How can it be improved on now?

    Got this on the RT - the missus loves the up changes as a passenger. She says the acceleration is almost seamless (maybe I'm just crap at manual changes lol)

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's it like going down the box? ...and at low speed?

    • @sootythegeezer6406
      @sootythegeezer6406 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fine going down the box if riding spiritedly. I tend not to use it at low speed (old habits die hard). After more than 40 years on bikes every facet of my being still screams 'NO' at me when I go to downshift without using the clutch, but I'm getting over it. I do agree that you mustn't try to change half-heartedly with the gear shift assist pro - BMW have designed this with the 'sh*t or get off the pot' principle i.e. if your going to change gear, then DO IT; don't just tickle the lever.

    Great info TMF. Thanks! I've just plonked down a deposit on a 2016 R1200 GS. The only option I didn't get was Keyless Start (which I thought was a bit of a gimmick). I was debating the Shift Assist Pro worried that it might put undue stress on the clutch/transmission. The sales manager at my Motorrad said not worry (famous last words). He also said that I shouldn't use it when tootling around town, only during hard acceleration or deceleration. Your thoughts?? I ended up ticking the box and getting it anyway. After watching your video I think that was the right decision. Again, thanks for your videos, you have been more informative than the staff at BMW!! Keep 'em coming!!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike, the gear shift assist pro is great fun, I particularly like downshifting with it. Like all quick shifters it works best when the bike is under load (ie up shifting with the throttle pinned open) and because of that I imagine you won't use it in normal riding in the low gears....of the three bikes I have with quick shifters the BMW is the clunkiest in this respect. Well worth having though, unlike the keyless ignition (I agree a bit of a gimmick). Have fun and enjoy the new bike :0) TMG

    You make that WC boxer with the extras sound SOOO good!
    I bought a gently used 2009 GS last Oct as my second bike. I've only ridden 20,000 Km since then with nothing but smiles. Ha, even in the monsoon down pours this week here in Arizona were better than the ones I tackled on my CBR250. If anything happened to GooSe I'd hop on a new GS as soon as I could.
    But that new GSA with the extra fuel would be icing on the cake :)

      RCFlyBoy314 Hey RCFlyBoy314 nice to hear from you again, hope all is well over there? - I'd love to ride in Arizona, one of my favourite states (not that I've been to them all) - I did a flying tour there once and landed at Sedona, would be a great place to ride........thanks for your kind words. The big GS is a great bike for touring, I've not found better yet. For me the GSA I think would just be a bit too much of a handful to manoeuvre on my drive way due the extra weight of the bigger tank, where I ride range is never an issue - although in the desert I dare say it is more of a problem where you are!! Ride safe and thanks for watching/commenting.....TMF

      All is going pretty well, now! Thank you! You'd really enjoy it in about another 2 months or so, the summer heat is still here and the monsoons make for some unexpected floods. Lots of touring destinations North of Phoenix that cool down before the valley does. Haven't made it to Sedona yet, but its on my list for sure :)

      I agree it doesn't work so well lower down the box unless it's under heavy load - this is by far the clunkiest of quick shifter's I've ever used, I don't think there is likely to be anything wrong with yours.....

      Some subtle generalisations in there, though. It doesn’t really double-declutch (lest anyone be misled - there is no clutch actuation at all), and the electronic connector doesn’t really do any wizardry except relay the outputs of the strain gauge sensor to the BMS engine control unit. The smarts are in the latter, cutting power for the appropriate time during upshifts, and blipping the throttle appropriately during down shifts.

    Good review. I've got a question if you can grab a minute or two to answer please...? I have the GS Adventure with the same unit on. For me when Im changing down it won't let me unless I roll-off the throttle each time - in other words if Im slowing down and the throttle is idle it won't let me shift down. so i can't go down without throttle on and off again before I shift down again. Is yours the same? Also, when shifting up, it doesn't allow me to shift up unless I'm absolutely at the right revs - I'm mean almost clinically so. The shifter is very stiff if I try slightly too soon. Does yours do that? I only ask as it looks like yours was much easier than I am experiencing and it made me wonder whether mine is working at all...

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Think you have an issue there, mine will change down with throttle on or off - but it will complain if you get the revs wrong, smoother if you're coasting with no throttle on the downshift (as you normally are). Mine will upshift at pretty much any revs, but again smoother if the revs are at the higher end of the range - sounds like yours needs some adjustment! Good luck with it.....TMF

    Hello again TMF,
    just a quick message to ask if you have adjusted your gear shift lever at all?. I had all sorts of issues when using the GS Pro boots to such an extent I had to use another pair ( Forma Adventure boots....super comfy and very waterproof) then sat down a worked out how to adjust the little blighter.... first thing is the actual black rubber part of the shifter is on an eccentric shaft allowing around 5mm up movement, then along with loosening the small nuts either end of the stainless steel shaft behind this adds another few mm which may not sound like much but makes a huge difference....by the way the little nuts on each end unscrew opposite to what one would think.
    Keep up the video's always look forward to a new post from you
    regards
    BH

    Quick Shift, it gives you something but it takes something away from the riding experience, BMW should make a GS with DTC then you wouldn't have to worry about using the clutch. Cool on the track, not sure about country lanes in the rain.

    Another excellent video from you! As mentioned on another one of your videos I have just purchased the new GSA with Gearshift Assist Pro & I too love it! However, would you recommend on occasions use the clutch as one dealer told me no need to use the clutch & another dealer told me to use the clutch occasionally so very confusing! Would love your opinion please?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Taylor Yeah depends on how lazy I'm feeling Robert - I do use the clutch in low gears or if I want a smooth change, if it's a drag strip start from the lights then the quick shifter wins. I do enjoy changing down with it too. Having said all that the BMW quick shift is nowhere near as good as the Ducati or Triumph ones I have....

    I was wondering how you experience the evolution of BMW's Gear Shift Assist? Or is there anything changed over the years? In your BMW GS videos you talk about more smoothness over the years? For example, if I compare your comments on the 2017 GSA compared to the 2018 GSA and so on.
    Very curious if the 'clunkyness' improved over the years?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What on my bike you mean? Yes it has got a little bit smoother but still the newer engined bikes, particularly the current 1250's have way better gearboxes and quickshifters....

    • @robinvaseline
      @robinvaseline 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheMissendenFlyer the last point. How did it improve over time in the models? You tested the 2017, 2018 1200 GSA and now also the 1250 one.
      So is the 2017 GSA less clunky than your own bike? And is the 2018 better than the 2017? Or is only the 1250 upgrade better?

    @TMF I could use some advice on Gear Shift Assist Pro - I test rode a R1200GS with it fitted yesterday, but it didn't feel like other quick shifters I've ridden. On the upshifts I was really having to pull up the leaver to get it to shift (it was almost like when firing any sort of firearm - going to first pressure on the trigger and then a second effort to complete the action). On the downshifts it was a simple "prod" of the leaver (as expected).
    Is that how it feels for yours? Or is it a simple "prod the lever" as long as your under load? That was my experience on the Tracer 900GT so I was wondering if I'm missing something.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the advice to be “positive” with the upshifts is bang on, even on the new R1250 GS. I test rode one a few weeks ago, having never used a quick shifter previously. I got to a quiet stretch, pushed the gear lever up but without any great conviction and caused the bike to leap forward as it clunked from 2nd to 3rd - I thought it was going to rip my arms out of the sockets! I decided to change gear the old fashioned way for the rest of the ride.
      Didn’t put me off the bike though, and hopefully 2 weeks from today I’ll be getting my hands on my new Rallye TE and be able to put TMF’s good advice into practice 😀

    Hi, I have a new BMW Adventure LC 2015 with the same system, actually I don't use is very often but I have some questions to make you. It was told me that for the first gear you have always to use the clutch, is this true? And the guy from BMW told me as well that if I start to use for example the clutch on second gear I can not use for the the third and so on the automatic shift assistance. I don't know if this is true because I don't see it on the motorbike manual. When you down gear is your accelerator to idle?
    Can I kindly ask you if possible how to adjust the shift lever for a comfortable shift change, with my riding boots I almost need to put my feet on vertical.
    Thank you in advance for your help and congrats to the nice video.

      +Hugo Da Palma Thanks Hugo - the quick shifter works for all gears up and down the box but works best going up if you have the throttle pinned open, if not it is a bit clunky going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, downshifting is smooth all the way as long as the throttle is closed.....hope that helps! Ride safe, TMF.

    • @MaartensTravels
      @MaartensTravels 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like TMF said, the Shift Assist Pro works in all gears, albeit a bit rough in low gears. However, it is possible. In recent months, I've mastered shifting smoothly from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd starting from a standstill. It requires a bit of precision timing and determination. Don't be afraid to use a bit of force when pulling up the lever. The gear shift may fail when you're not applying sufficient force on the lever. Also, you need to keep an eye on your RMP's. They can't be too low for up shifting, and can be too low or too high for down shifting.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

      +Dillian Beverly No, you still have a normal clutch so you have to pull the clutch lever when you come to a standstill to avoid stalling the bike....

    So downshifting should be done on idle and up shifting should be done under load? max load, medium, low...? Is it a problem if i release the throttle when up shifting?

      Found the answer for this? I too want to know

    • @ktm640lc4BGD
      @ktm640lc4BGD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKaizenMaster yes i bought GSA last year and it is like that... when downshifting you have to remove the load on the engine just for a part of a second (what ever the speed, revs or gear is it in) kinda like braking with the engine, shift with confidence fast and without hesitation, not slowly. When up-shifting, same thing but the engine has to be under load (small, medium or full acceleration). Also it is important to let the shifter lever get back to original position between shifts because it is not going to shift properly further. Just like the ball-pen, if you click it several times in a row and do not let the mechanism return completely to the top it is not going to function properly during next click. Do not shift slowly thinking it is better for the gearbox, it is not, it starts kinda grinding sometimes...

    My Honda NC750 has DCT and no clutch. Presumably on BMW you need to pull in clutch lever when stationary and in first gear? Thanks. Jon

    Do you actually have to push hard to get up in gears? I feel like its much heavier than normal gear changes, to a point where I feel fatigue in my foot. Worried about damaging my gearbox. Just picked up my first r1200gs with a quickshifter already preinstalled.

      Some clutches do not have oil in them (notably some Ducati’s).....these are dry clutches and they make a distinctive rattling sound. Wet clutches contain clutch fluid.....
