My doctor forgot to get me the Insulin test last physical which I requested (3.1!) so I looked a google seach for a lab to get it done at. Own Your Labs popped up and gives you a great description of the test and a price down to the cent. I signed up and paid for the test and was given instructions on the lab to go to to get it done locally. I did have to sign in for a portal for the lab. Then I compared the prices on their site to see if they were less expensive. OMG. Here are some of the differences: OYL LAB Complete blood count $7.35 $29 Thyroid panel $27.74 $89 A1C $7.50 $39 Comprehensive Metabolic Panel $8.75 $49 Testosterone $26.08 $69 Vitamin D $39 $99 Same test, same place, same quick results. Just want to save people a ton of money if they don't want/need to pay a copay go get these tests done at their dr's office. Happy Testing!
@@Shantell314 Ownyourlabs simply provides a Dr. who will get you the lab form you need for what you purchased. They, like any other doctors office, has some deal with your major, but localized labs like Labcorp. You have to set up a labcorp account to schedule and receive your lab results. You dont pay labcorp a dime, even though they sent me an email that they were going to submit my order to medicare, even though I’m nowhere close to eligible. I guess they wanted even more out of the transaction :) awkward the first time you do it, but its pretty straightforward. Ownyourlabs was formed to help fund clinical trials for the carnivore diet.
I asked my doctor for a full metabolic panel and hormone blood panel as well. I asked both my OBGYN and my regular doctor and both of them don't want to do it. I asked for a c-peptide and fastimg Insulin, to also check my estrogen levels and thyroid and they said they see no reason why because I'm not diabetic and that they can't just do it because I want it, because they wouldn't know what to do with the information they are supposed to interpret for me. I assured both of them that I did not need them to interpret it for me I just wanted the information and that was it. But of course, they are used to prescribing something if they see fit. I told them I want it for my own peace of mind and it's my body and what happened to my body my choice? I also told them I am the customer and I should be able to order what I want since I'm paying for it. And the doctors both said that that is just how we've been taught, and I told him I understand I figured there would be some pushback but maybe they want might want to do their own research for their own personal benefit and to think about what I'm asking. My Obgyn said it is not necessary to test hormones that if you start losing your cycle at a certain age it just means that you are starting menopause and that they don't need to test the hormones before giving you estrogen or progesterone. And I told him that was utterly ridiculous. I said you check vitamin D levels before prescribing vitamin D don't you? It's the same thing. They just want to chock everything up to getting older and that's just how it is and we know better and you're just the stupid patient that can't read or interpret the outcomes of the blood work and just shut up and listen to us and do as we say.
Sorry but your obgyn is an idiot… you need to find a new one that actually cares for patients not just making their beach house payment! The last doctor I went to literally started arguing with me about me wanting a full thyroid panel and not just a TSH. I’ve had symptoms for many years… I just didn’t realize what it was. I’m going to be giving myself the gift of a full panel for Christmas! Crazy thing is is that I’m self pay so they have NO insurance paperwork and get paid at the time of my visit… they even have their own lab 😮 just draw my blood and flipping test it!!! Sorry you are getting so much pushback! It’s frustrating to say the least…
@@Sweetest_of_Seven I totally agree! She's either a moron who can't think for herself, a sheep who bahs when told, or a gas lighting narcissist! Good luck to you!
I'm in UK and have not seen my doctor for 10 years. I also don't intend to get tested for anything. I have lost faith in the entire medical system here. I began the carnivore transition about 2 months ago. Feel fantastic and losing a little weight slowly. I did not have any health condition reason for starting this lifestyle - just feels right. Thank you for all your valuable info.
Absolutely agree! In 10yrs I've had one piece of sound medical advice and that was from a substitute Dr. at my surgery for a fracture. When I was diagnosed with Irritable bowel syndrome -i pleaded with the Dr"please tell me what I can eat to not get sick?"his reply"Go find out for yourself"!so I did,got a private allergy test and found it was the Dr. that was making me sick for 2months.Been wheat &gluten free for 2yrs,have stunning good health.oh,and I mentioned to my Dr about my test and he wanted to see it.I replied,"ok"You pay me £75 +£5 for admin,(that's what they charge me)and I LL give you a copy".Health care in UK is not only bad but the drugs have horrendous side effects .I am Soo grateful I lived abroad ,in Europe for 10yrs as I only saw private Drs ,and they were super
Excellent info as always. I made a list to bring with next time I'm in for lab work: A1c - For prediabetic or type 2 diabetes CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) - Checks for liver function as well CBC (Complete Blood Panel w/Differential) C peptide - For prediabetic D-25 - Telling if enough vitamin D from the sun or diet DHEA-S - Overall adrenal gland health ESR (sed rate) - chronic inflammation Ferritin - related to hyperinsulinemia or chronic inflammation Fasting insulin - pancreas releasing to much, metabolic syndrome and prediabetic GGT - gull bladder, pancreas and kidneys... not only liver damage if elevated. Replaces alkaline phosphatase Homocystiene - B12 status and inflammation overall hisCRP - If elevated inflammation or infection that needs to be investigated Lipid Panel - Magnesium - Phosphorus - TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) - quick look at thyroid function, if low or abnormal than need full thyroid panel Urinalysis - Ketones, infection, damage, etc. ? Sex hormones - Testosterone and Estrogen
Dear Dr. Berry & Staff, thank you for your caring. I so appreciate one reply that listed the tests that you recommend. I order from Amazon Books and they didn’t list it per my inquiry. I’m not computer savvy as young people and any help is appreciated. God bless you and your family. Bibby
Today I went for my annual labs w a focus on Thyroid as it had been wonky in the past. I've been eating clean, high quality veg/meat for close to a year now. I love my GP and today she had a 4th year med student observing. She immediately noticed I'd lost weight (5kgs / I wasn't particularly heavy, just those post menopausal pounds) and was interested in my strategies/approach. So I gave a 10 minute lesson on ketogenic and clean eating and she agreed to the large panel of blood tests (per your book!) to set my new baseline. As I told the med student, patients can be partners in their care when they choose! I also encouraged him to do more independent study into new nutrition paradigms and get off any ultra processed foods. Will get the results in the next few days 🤞
all good, EXCEPT Thyroid and because I asked for the EXTRA labs, I got kind of scary results: TPO 246 and TG >1000 so I guess I've got Hashimotos but other markers okay and so I'm going to remain positive and work with her and experts to understand how I can manage this via diet
@@debramccord3461 Hi Debra, thanks for following up. My last set of labs were March 1 (2024) and T3/T4 levels fine, TSH still elevated and the antibodies still there (and slightly higher). However, as I'm now fully leaned into carnivore, and also have pulled out all wheat etc. which may be at the root of the autoimmune response. I've also got my D3 back up to a super level, which should manage the autoimmune side of things. I'll expect improvement at the next visit which will be next month. I certainly have never experienced any of the 'symptoms' associated with Hashimoto's as my body has been able to manufacture and convert the hormones well. Will post an update once I have one.
Most doctors won't order labs we request. They don't want to be told what to do. Good thing is that we can order them ourselves but have to pay out of pocket or with HSA
bingo. telling a dr that you'd like a certain lab done can be a slippery slope. they do not want to be told what to do. esp if you're not suffering/complaining about a certain ailment. also, what does insurance cover is key. kinda pathetic.
One day saw something on the internet that caused me concern about my Vit D level even though I had no symptoms of being deficient. Dr. blew me off the first time. The next time I insisted. He made a big deal about I would have to pay for it, insurance would not cover and had me sign for it. Well guess what?! I was EXTREMELY deficient and now on a supplement. AND insurance paid for it!! Stand your ground...don't take no for an answer!!😁
By some miracle a doctor ran a d3 test and found I was difficient and prescribed pills. A couple years later I was in the normal range and he discontinued the prescription. Not as dumb as I look, I bought OTC 5000 iu plus k2 pills and have been taking them 3 times a week ever since. If anybody lives in the north or doesn't get much sun this should be automatic.
Thanks Dr. Berry. Get this, I gave my daughter this list. Her family doctor wouldn't order any inflammation marking labs because if they came back high she would have to treat it and that's out of her scope. So she only ordered what she could, what she considers inside her scope of practice. I'm beyond frustrated and disgusted with this line of thinking.
I got so annoyed with the medical establishment that I quit going to the dr years ago and took my health into my own hands. However, now that I'm coming up on 54, I decided to schedule my first checkup in years, which is in a few weeks, so this is just the video I needed. I found a young D.O. with a solid reputation, so I hope he's a good fit for me.
@@squirrelslayer6837 It went very well. I requested a long list of labs and he didn't bat an eye. My last dr would fight me on everything. The best part, not a single red flag. Every result was within healthy ranges, although there were a couple things I thought I could improve upon... vitamin D level was only 50 and a1c was a bit high at 5.5, but that's it. I was surprised everything looked so good because I have so much chronic disease throughout my family. It turns out, maintaining a healthy lifestyle actually can help you overcome genetics.
My doc would only test 4 of those on your list and he said he didn't know what he could do with the information from them if he got them. Man I wish we had more Ken berry's around the USA so I could have you as my dr
We need lists of “good” doctors in every state a new medical association. Something to completely counter the AMA. Good doctors stand up before all trust is lost
Just wanted to share with those watching and reading comments.... Thank you Dr. Berry for putting out this video. Fist thing I did was fire my previous doctor and I interviewed and hired a new one in September. I am using OwnYourOwnLabs and did my first test since 5 months of full carnivore. My improvements from pre-keto to Keto were pretty good, and now after just shy of 5 full months of carnivore (BBBE style), I have had even more improvements. Folks, it is not an overnight fix, but my cholesterol ration has only been this low one time since 2012. My Bun/Creatine ratio is up and I believe that is expected with the extra proteins. My A1C is lower and my insulin numbers are very comfortable at 9.8 with the range of 2.6-24.5. Folks, Dr Berry tells you what to test for, its your choice if you want to do it, and I am saying thank you, I have done it and feel so pleased with the results of my test. Almost 5 full months of Carnivore, thinking I am going to switch to Lion mode after I finish off some of the other foods that I already have bought and made that are in my freezer. Clearly my body is one of those that really appreciate what I am doing for it. Thanks again Dr. Berry - you are awesome with your videos and support of people that want to help themselves.
I’m at a point where I’m opting for self testing meaning I go directly to one of standard labs. My insurance has a high deductible and copay and I’ve determined that it’s more cost effective to forego the initial copay to the doctor, get tests done (I can uses HSA if I want). If my results are concerning then I can consult with the doctor. Many people don’t know you can get most of these blood tests without a doctor’s order.
Let me know what you find. I think this is the best approach. Straight visits to the labs, get samples collected and results emailed to you with standard interpretations. You can then interpret them based on your own research. You can then get a quick prescription from a Dr based on your tests if need me. I bought a total and free testosterone test from Quest lab for less than $70 and a Vitamin D test for $48. I believe Quest is a middle man and the prices would be cheaper when dealing with the actual labs directly.
I hate when doctors and nurses try to draw blood. What a bunch of butchers! They stick in the needle missing the vein and then without removing it they start pushing it this way and that way trying to find blood. My wife suffered a lot by these clowns. She needed a good phlebotomist to get to the bottom of this! And a real professional is a gem.
Dr Berry Thank you !! My pancreas dr said about my recent abdomen mri that the fatty liver disease is gone, also fatty pancreas is resolved and I haven’t needed creon for the chronic pancreatitis hardly at all anymore. I thank God that I have found your channel🙏 thank you and God bless you and your family 💕. Ps. Dr told me to keep doing what I was doing that it was working 🎉 also I lost 32 pounds so far❤
Just had all the tests from soup to nuts as I hadn’t had a physical in 5 1/2 years (because I was living overseas where my Medicare doesn’t work), and I’m 70. Said I’m healthy as a horse. Usually when a doc tells you that you’ll be pushed up daisies within a couple of months 😂 PS I’m five three/135 Pounds, BP is OK, cholesterol OK, take no meds (do take B12 as I have no intrinsic factor), cook and eat healthy food, don’t drink or smoke. 30 year cancer survivor.
One of the advantages of some countries is that you go to a lab and give them your list and they do it, no pseudo -doctor needed. Mine emails my results same afternoon. People who live near the border can get this done in Mexico, have a Mexican lunch, buy a bottle of Kahlua, and be done with it.
Great. I’m in Canada and ordered the e-version of the book. I was at the Dr last week because he was very concerned about my high LDL (normal Tri and HDL) and I had to ask for more tests including an NMR. Thanks for the book and allowing people to take control.
Request a VAP profile of LDL. Yes there is a component of beneficial LDL. This test shows the fluffy parts of LDL (good beneficial form) ratio compared to the dense form of LDL (the not so good portion) of LDL. This shows the greatest amount of information regarding your cholesterol. The higher the HDL, the better. It compensates for a generally higher total cholesterol. Sidenote: if you eat a fair amount of coconut 🥥 oil, that will raise your LDL. But ...not to worry... .it raises the "fluffy" portion of LDL, the beneficial portion of the LDL. Cholesterol has really gotten a bad rap the last 20+ years, which is quite a shame. And honestly, a money maker for big pharma in order to sell more meds. Just my opinion. 🌞
@@AMDG_-nk2dp I believe the "cholesterol is bad theory" is a concoction of the pharmaceutical companies that was created to sell drugs. People with low cholesterol have as many heart attacks as those with high cholesterol. I have seen studies that showed that women with high cholesterol live longer than those with low cholesterol.
@@delinquense LP(A), CRP, apo B, NMR, plus a full panel for my thyroid. I haven’t filled the requisition yet but I believe everything but the NMR is covered.
@@LivingTheLifeRetired make sure you ask for HS-crp which is heart specific CRP inflammation test. Also request fibrinogen ( for cardio health). Lipo- protein a. And homocysteine. These are tests that are all needed for a complete cardio health picture. These are not usually cost extra, your doctor just has to check off for these tests or write them in. And if course he should know about them and realize the importance of having these tests run. And again, the VAP profile test of LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. It's an awesome complete test that tells the patient exactly how their cholesterol is in detail. We seriously do not hear enough about these apparently avante gard tests, that are readily available to be requested on the physicians script pad for blood work labs.
Thank you!!!! As a nurse, it has been making me crazy trying to figure out what tests to get while being on keto for the past 3 years without having to stick with the standard tests that generally skew and make me appear ill to a non keto informed PCP. Just ordered the book. Again thanks
Hey Doc. I found this video just MINUTES before heading to my doctor for my annual physical. I’m. About to ask her about all 15 of these lab tests. I just subscribed to your channel. I will order your book later ! Thanks. Marc
My dr. is very good about just adding any labs I request. He is keto friendly, don't know about carnivore though. At age 70, I don't believe I've had any urinalysis for years. I haven't even had a cold since 2008, 12 years before going keto. I'm now at my high school weight of 160, haven't taken any otc pain meds in years because I have no pain.
Finding this video in the most difficult times of my husband and I’s life…Just last month, Early October at his annual physical he was told by pcp doc that his kidney needs to be check and ordered to be seen by a Nephrologist. Our world turned upside down 2 days after when Neph said his kidneys are failing and send us to Transplant center asap. I don’t get how can a pcp missed this lab, when I called and asked our pcp she just said that she missed to call that egfr # last year which was already stage 4😢 Now all we have to do is move forward. Glad I’m my husband’s perfect kidney donor 💚 but my heart is still very heavy when I think of the what ifs…
@@jna9888 my husband was never told he has CKD. He takes low dose blood pressure medication. He has very aggressive autoimmune disease-Berger’s disease that attacks his kidneys.
Every time I have asked my doctor to order extra tests he seems to get very annoyed and pushes back. Last time I asked for A1c, fasting insulin, hsCRP, and D-25. He said "I don't think I'm a good doctor for you because you just want me to do what you want". Most doctors don't want to be questioned or told what to do. No customer/patient service. The healthcare system is trash. They don't want to prevent disease, only treat it with medication. I will be trying a new doctor next time by the way.
My daughter had normal hemoglobin but fatigue and always cold. She went to a hematologist and she ordered ferritin. So low she was scheduled 5 iron infusions.
I go to the VA. If I say I have a problem they send me to a specialist. They check my blood and say come back in 3 months. They don't tell me what to eat or to exercise but they did say to stop drinking beer and to lose weight. I get most of my information on things to improve my health from Drs here on TH-cam. This KETO diet is the first thing I found that worked. Of course I could eat veggies and lose weight too...I have done it. Eating meat is easy though cause I like it!
Great info! Just ordered both forms of the book. Recently had an eye doctor order a bunch of tests I’d never had & found out, much to my surprise, that I’m pre-diabetic! Appreciate your work!
Can I ask if you get a doctor/insurance involved? If you order them yourself, is there a way to keep out of pocket cost down? When I looked into ordering labs from Labcorp it was about $400ish for the labs I wanted drawn. Doctor won't order some, and insurance only covers them once a year
Thank you Dr. Berry, for me it was vitamin D and B12 deficiencies that came out from the check, none of the doctors told me to do this check and I have been suffering from a knee pain for an over a year now, and been to so many doctors over that year and they did not know what it is. 2 things I have changed over the last month(!) & got a relieve: (1) removed sugar (& sugar containing foods), wheat, nightshade plants (tomatoes, eggplants, etc) from my diet, which is basically following a near-keto diet - the goal here was to reduce inflammation which is caused by food and (2) staring eating nutritious non-plant based diet and added vit D + B12 to my diet. Insane how deficiency in D may impact your bones, joints and muscles. And do not stop moving & exercise to the level you can - otherwise it will get worse.
Keeping this plain and not bad mouthing the doctors allows me to forward this video to my doctor. Thanks Dr. Berry. I got 2 copies of your Labs book so that I can give one to my doctor.
I had one doctor that refused to order inflammatory markers of CRP, sed rate, hbA1C, insulin, liver enzymes, or almost anything above the metabolic panel. In fact, she told me that I could not or should not request any of these. So quite a few years ago, I fired her and didn’t look back. I didn’t think bout the c peptide.
Interesting. I figured out I had big problems with gluten and once I cut out gluten I went from triglycerides at about 180-185 down to 100 Ideal in about 6 months! Amazing! Still at 100 seven years later. I watch my carbs but not keto or carnivore. I love my veggies and variety. I’m definitely eating less carbs than a typical American diet but not that strict. No white, regular or gluten wheat bread though. No fast food and junk. Healthy balanced Whole Foods 90% of my diet. Little to no added sugar and no more than a small serving of berries a day. I do eat eggs and dairy.. cheese and plain organic yogurt plus meat and veggies. Cook at home. Typically 2 meals a day in a 6-8 hr window.
I've been low carb/keto/carni for a long time now, but recently I did try higher carbs because I exercised like crazy, and I base carbs around that when I don't try to stay in ketosis 24/7. My trigs were 0.47 mmol/L, lowest I ever got I believe, lol. Prior to eating actual real food where I only ate junk, my lipids were trash, though, and my trigs were ~1.5 mmo/L, which for my personal optimal ranges is way too high, even though the cutoff here is 2 mmol/L.
whole food carbs such as potatoes, brown rice and legumes are some of the healthiest foods on the planet. our body runs on carbs, do not let them scare you. a plant based high carb low fat diet is actually the healthiest diet you can eat
@@rayyysmr Not for a type 2 diabetic! That diet will send your blood sugars soaring into the stratosphere!! I know as it did for me. I am on low carb diet and I am off all diabetic meds and have lost 35 #. If the high carb diet works for you and your A1C and blood sugars are okay then good for you but that does not work for the majority of people.
Some doctors won’t order tests without a reason. I told my PCP that was tired with little energy. I thought I might need iron. He ordered my usual yearly labs plus a full thyroid panel and Iron studies. Nothing was abnormal. I had lost muscle after having surgery. I started eating more meat. I’ve resumed weight training.
Sir, I get my labs once per year, and I get everything that I can think of; thyroxine, 25 hydroxy vitamin d, cystatin c, hemoglobin a1c, CMP, CRP, VAP. Will finish watching your video to see if I need to have any other tests. BTW: I do not wait for my doctor to do anything I believe the patient has to do it himself, I take the bull by the horns when it comes to my blood work, since blood work is a complete and total roadmap of your health to your doctor!
You are really amazing! You are helping millions of people, thank you!! I’m on keto for a year. Amazing! Perfect health, no more back and hip pains! Cranky teenagers have disappeared through keto! Husbands hip is no longer painful and his limp is gone (we take collagen, glucosamine and condrithin for this also, zinc, copper and boron). We have also asked for complete bloods and we read them ourselves!! ❤❤
Too funny!! I'm literally looking through your book, Dr. Berry, and then this video started playing! Haha! I'm SO thankful for your book! I wanted to order my labs online, and thanks to you, I know what to order!
I won hundred percent agree that the TSH level needs to be checked but I also think it is important to check the other thyroid hormones as well. According to my research the TSH does not always indicate that there is an issue. I also think it’s important to have a full thyroid panel done especially if you have a family history of thyroid disease.
Great walkthrough, but I missed testing the Omega-6/Omega-3 ratio, and Omega-3 index. Very important! I also miss information on what actually is optimal levels. Docs usually tell you everything is normal, but that is definitely NOT always the case. It would be nice to know what to look for, and aim for, to actually be healthy.
I wish I had known this before I was type-2 diabetic. Thank you though, thanks to you and channels like yours, I am no longer type-2. My A1C went from 10.1 to 5.1, I’ve dropped over 60 pounds, and now my metabolic panel looks great, with the exception of my cholesterol which is a little high.
@@Sheryleization Yes. I cut out all added sugars from my diet and went on a keto diet - less than 25 grams of net carb/day. Also, no alcohol, there’s a ton of sugar in alcohol. Not only did it lower my A1C, but it also cleared up many inflammatory issues that I was dealing with such as gout. I’m not saying the lifestyle is a miracle cure for all you medical issues, but it certainly did a lot for me. It’s worth a shot.
I went vegan for 10 months. My health was messed up. I am a diabétique. Stared carnivoire 10 days ago lost 3 kilos and of meds. I will continue. Thank you for
Thank you! I used to work for Quest Diagnostics, and didn't realize I could order on my own labs with Ulta and avoid the middleman markup. Seems that Quest Diagnostics acts merely as the draw station for Ulta. I'm on their site right now shopping for my labs.
Had my gallbladder out in 2003 caused pancreatitis so last year I told my doctor I want a test for my pancreas just as a prevention she said I didn’t need it I said I’m paying for it and I want it sometimes you just gotta be your own advocate, and quit listening to what they think they know or don’t know
My dr got pissed when i asked for lab test for hoshimotos. Said it was a useless money making test. Hated when people ordered. I left not happy with him anymore. He was actually beet face mad
I took a list of labs I wanted done a week ago to my doctor and she wouldn’t do any of them. She said they are not necessary. She said 6 years ago your blood glucose was 83 and that’s fine. So A1c, c peptide, fasting insulin where only necessary if type 1. She said she wouldn’t do any thyroid etc. or sex hormones because she wouldn’t know what to do with them. I told her I was fatigued, having problems sleeping. I told her I would pay for them myself.
It’s easy to say that but in order to keep Medicare you need a PC and they are ALL over worked bc there just aren’t a lot of them. Every doc is a specialist bc they do procedures and make money. I tried Dr Bs link to find a supportive low carb md but most aren’t really helpful and are confusing
Great information as always Dr. Berry! Just read your book!! LOVED IT. Recommending it too all my groups, family, and friends. You most certainly deserve that saintly aura your clock is giving you!! 😁
ThanQ Doc, preparing to go in for labs and have been putting a list together. Although, my body seems to require supplementation with my Canavore/Keto food, your knowledge shared is so helpful. May blessing be upon you and your beautiful growing family.
I am a57 y/o veteran and have my annual VA physical next month. This video was perfect timing; it saved me the time to research which labs I should ask for. I just ordered the digital and physical copy of your lab work book. Now, the challenge is to get the VA to agree to order them. I only wish you would have added a more detailed and complete lipid panel to the mix to get a better picture of the health of one's LDL if elevated. As always, thank you for all you are doing. God bless.
I'm on VA too. Lots of trouble getting labs I want. What worked for me was getting a lab draw kit from an outside DIY lab and asking him to have the Vampires do the draw. I am being ignored/under diagnosed for Thyroid. And overdiagnosed and overtreated for lipids/Statin. That Doc is Pissed at me but is slowly developing some respect for an old Electrical Engineer's ability to function outside his trained discipline. The results were that the T3 was on the low side of normal and we disagree on a small supplemental dose. On the statins, he did not like my suggestion that he should try them out as suppositories!
I was doing errands yesterday and noticed a business in an odd corner of a shopping center with a big sign advertising that they would order any lab test you want. Start with the cheapest ones, and go with God sir. Thank you for your service.
@@ledenhimeganidleshitz144 I am fortunate to have a great VA doc now. That wasn't the case for the first 15+ years. She is a PA/NP, so the final say still has to come from the facility MD whom I don't know. I had to laugh at your last line, "he should try them out as suppositories." I will have to remember that one. Brilliant.
Thanks for making this information available to the world, Dr. Berry. I'm one of ur devotees. Blessings to u and ur family throughout the year and always! - Bella
My doctor is willing to order the tests that I ask for. However I got a letter from my insurance company stating that the test is not covered because it is considered experimental, investigational, or unproven for the diagnosis. The cost was upwards of $300. It did t even mention which blood test it was. I never got billed by my doctor, so I’m not sure what happened. This makes me so mad, because this kind of testing can prevent disease. Thanks for your book Dr Berry!
they're not in the business to prevent disease, but only treat it once it happens, which they are banking will happen mainly because of what they feed us in the west.
I don't think that's it, @@FlintSpall. If they paid more for diagnostics on patients willing to change their diets, they would end up paying less for disease treatment. Why else would they pay for flu shots? I think they just fall victim to the same propaganda as doctors.
My doctor orders most of this We did the ApoB etc tests, CRP and ldl particles etc etc and some surprises. Always have do for that is willing to go deep
Thanks, Doctor. I found out that my C-Peptide is elevated even though I've got normal blood glucose. I would have developed diabetes if it hadn't been for your help. Now I know exactly what I've got to do. My total cholesterol is a bit high but HDL and LDL are in the healthy range.
Well after watching this I realize my Dr. sucks I complained about numbness fatigue on the left side of my body for weeks on end. I told her about it she said how is your blood pressure? It’s high usually but these symptoms disappeared and she send me for blood work. I haven’t heard back from her in 3 weeks. I found my results on LapCorp but I honestly think I need more blood work done bc I’m so tired all the time. High cholesterol pre diabetic and slightly high liver enzymes it showed.
And a friends doctor ordered labs before a visit but did not order fasting insulin or C-peptide She called and asked him about having these and he agreed Her C-peptide was 16.4 and her fasting insulin was 23.3 He told her it was nothing to worry about! And he would see her in four months… But maybe try to lose some weight! I was livid! She has all kinds of body pains, arthritis, sleeping problems, bad eating habits! And she does nothing because her doctor told her it was OK
@@KenDBerryMD I believe so too… But there’s no way to prove to somebody that they’re doctors lying to them… Except for to show them the difference I have begged her to try carnivore or just extremely low carb to no avail Some people just will not see what is before their face! I agree with everything you tell us on your videos I believe it because I have lived it!
How many of these labs test is not covered by Medicare? Is there a list from the medicare dept that list how many times they will pay annually for a test?
been doing carnivore and keto for about seven years with a normal cholesterol number in the 250 range. At my last check up my Doctor again tried to get me on a statin. I saod no and she said then get a stress test and lets she where you are at cardiovasularly. I said fine and if it is bad I'll take the statin, if it is not I do not want to hear any more complaints about my eating lifestyle. I had a stress test and they found no new or old Ischemia. I had an echocardiogram and my heart valves are all good great function for a 63 year old. I have a video conference with her next week, can't wait to see what she has to say.
It takes months to get in to see my primary doc, and most docs in my area aren’t seeing new patients. At 61, I’ve never had any of the extra tests mentioned in the vid done. My doc doesn’t even go over any test results anyway. Health care in the US is a joke. Maybe it’s just for rich people.
I've noticed in the last few years, my doctors order very few labs to detect anything showing your true health, except for hdl, ldl tris and cholesterol.
I am so lucky to have a DO who is willing to order any labs that I request. I ask for all but 2 of these tests and then some, twice/yr. I will be adding the two that I hadn't been asking for, to my next set of labs. It took me yrs to find a Dr willing to order labs that I want done. Most of them have a bunch of excuses for why they won't do them. I think DOs and nurse practicianers are more willing. Any functional med Dr or ND would be willing but not all insurance covers labs ordered by them. I see an ND and then my DO orders my labs and writes prescriptions but doesn't manage my car in any other way.
My doctor is always on it. She has me get lab work all the time. As a matter of fact, I just saw her this past Friday and she had me do lab tests before I checked out. The last time was six months ago in May. She saw that I just turned 45 last week and scheduled me for a colonoscopy on the spot and then asked if I wanted anything else like a Pap smear or any testing for STDs. 😂 For the amount of money I pay for health insurance, I said yes to everything. ❤I love my doctor and I’m happy she does this. I don’t know how my insurance company feels about all of these tests back to back though.
I live in the UK, and I am on a low carb diet (30g a day), I had h1c blood test in August from my Doctor which was in the normal range. I paid a chemist to have a Cholesterol test last week and the result I was given was total cholesterol 5.25mmol/l, HDL 1.85mmol/l and total cholesterol HD ratio 2.84 which I think is quite good.
I agree with this list for the most part. However...ESR (Sed Rates) are antiquated and are highly subject to the method used because manual methods can be affected by many factors in the process of testing. CRP (QUANT) is what I prefer over ESR and is, of course, different than hs-CRP. In order to get all these tests covered by insurance or Medicare, the proper diagnosis codes must be presented with orders which is often times a problem.
They learned how to pay student loans by prescribing pills for life and cramming their schedule so full they couldn't talk to a patient if they wanted to.
I asked for C-peptide and my Dr said.. "Why?" She said they would only test for that if my A1C or insulin looks weird. Sometimes it's a fight to get what you want tested.
Thank you so much for doing this video. Came at a perfect time. How can you find out if you are actually depleted in potassium and magnesium even though your bloodwork says you are in normal range. Thank you for all you do. Have learned a lot since subscribing to your channel about 4 months ago.
Good question. Much of those two elements, mag and phos (not potassium which is readily found with a simple BMP or CMP) is intracellular, meaning a lot of it is stored outside of the blood and in your cells. So you could be normal in the blood but your total stores could be very low. As far as I know, there's no easy way to check total body Mg and P levels.
For potassium levels it needs to be a more specific intercellular test. I know this because I lived the nightmare of my potassium almost being depleted. I had learned this info from Dr. Berg and Dr Berry here on youtube and my cardiologist finally listened to me and ordered the more specialized test...to his surprise, but not mine nor my nurse, I was almost completed depleted of potassium. I had like 9 symptoms that I was but no one wanted to listen to me...
Tell 'em it hurts. I once lucked into a good HMO doctor. I asked for a lab test and he said he couldn't order it unless something hurt. That, of course, triggered my memory of the nagging pain and I got my test. HMOs want you sick, protect yourself.
I'm a Veteran. My good Dr. seems to order most of what you suggest. I get a 3-4 page printout, showing comparisons/ highs and lows. But ..what the WHO, and VA show and suggest may not be quite everything I need. I'm on this!!!! I'll get things done that covers ALL necessary results.
Hi Dr. Ben - you are kind of shy in your lab requests but I understand you live in Australia. I'm a doc with 40 years of experience (the photo is from 15 years ago, sorry). Many years ago I spent 3 months in Australia and some folks asked me for some advice. I ordered my initial blood tests (around 85) and, at that time, cost like 10 thousand dollars. Crazy shit. The same tests in Brazil cost around 1 (one) thousand. Good luck to you and the people from Australia. BTW, good videos, I appreciate your work. And as a comment, high homocysteine, in my knowledge, is mostly related to folic acid deficiency, not B12. And with people with the 5-MTHFR C677T variant (1 in 4 people, 25% of people....a lot). I ask for this test when I see high homocysteine and the percentage is true - like one in four have this problem that is easily solved with methyl folate.
Dr, Berry is from Tennessee, USA. Anyway, as a patient, I want to thank you for taking the time to watch the video. We need more members of the medical profession to learn about what insulin resistance can do to a body and what methods to use for prevention.
I had a thyroidectomy about 20 yrs ago and cannot find a thing about using kelp powder in my diet. Not one word. Do your have any answers??? Thank you. Be healthy, stay safe and many blessings, Morgan in CO
Have you heard of Amy Myers MD? She might have info about that. She had severe thyroid issues while she was a medical student and was treated badly by her doctors. Propelled her into functional medicine. Has her own website and products, on Facebook and TH-cam. She's written books and has a lot of informative videos.
My doctor has stopped all full physical examinations. I live in Canada, where we can’t expect much more than third world medical standards. I feel like getting tests done while in the US next time. US doctors seem to be more professional and take their job seriously due to the fact that it is a competitive industry, unlike in Canada where private health care is not permitted therefore we all get sub standard care. Competition breeds excellence.
more testing doesn't translate into better outcomes. public health care doesn't pay for full physicals because they aren't of value, no proof they do anything good.
Well, matters could be even worse. My case: I have not had a physical examination since I was a teenager. I have not had a blood test done in 17 years. I'm 41 now. I live in Czechia, which is definitely not a 3-rd world country. Yay, Czech healthcare! The doctors won't do anything unless you're almost dropping dead.
Private health care not PERMITTED?? I never knew that about 🇨🇦 Canada health care. I am sorry. When elections pop up every now and then in the US, public health care “like Canada has” is proposed. This part of it is not known. 🤔
Be prepared to pay out of pocket. Insurance may (very probably) not pay if there is no history or no specific symptom to justify said tests. I had to pay a retail lab for a D test so I could show my doctor proof I was defficient. Now they'll pay but I have to ask every time.
I did a fasting insulin test a few months ago and it was 76, which is literally off the charts, apparently. The results said that anything over 21 was high and abnormal, so I presume 76 is pretty bad. I started keto then, but have been carnivore for the past 6 weeks. I'll wait another month or two and then do that test again.
Have you ever wondered why something as simple as the all important Vitamin D3 test is not part of the general blood test panel? It’s ridiculous that something so important that is often low in many people is not ever tested usually unless you personally ask for it. It may not even be the doctor’s fault either, but the insurance that dictates what exactly they’ll cover for you.
Exactly. It's even telling that the importance of vitamin D wasn't broadcast loudly by health officials early in the manufactured health crisis 2 to 3 years ago.
I agree and am so mad about it. I didn't even know to ask for that to be tested until 2016 and I live in Chicago which is far north enough for most people here to be low. Of course I was below the normal range. Got the high Rx to raise it, still below normal the next year. And according to an MS doctor I know, the bottom of the normal range is to low to be healthy. Thankfully the sell supplements.
This was immensely helpful!! Thank you Dr Berry I’ll have to pay for them put it will be worth it. Is there anywhere to understand them? Not sure my doc will take all that time bc she didn’t think they were needed to begin with.
I suggest getting Dr Berry’s book of labs. I did and found it very helpful. For those tests I wanted more info on I either googled it or looked for older videos from Dr Berry. It really isn’t hard to interpret them at all by yourself (with Dr B’s and googles help). I did a number of tests myself through Own Your Labs. Easy and fairly inexpensive.
I've never heard of GGT and ty for mentioning it as my ALP has been elevated since at least when I had my gallbladder out several years ago. I've been blown off by at least 3 primary care professionals so I am going to bring up this test at my next visit in Sept. I keep getting told it's because I had my gallbladder out, but I've been having pain on and off in the area for years after the fact now and feel like they messed something up or left a stone in a duct.
Dr Barry- do you have a good doctor that you can suggest in New Hampshire- hopefully best Hampton area? My boyfriend 61 yrs has always been in great shape but now he's losing potassium so much he has been to the ER three times and the 4 different doctors he has gone to do not know why or what to do except to tell him to eat potatoes and take prescription potassium tablets. Then they just told he has thyroid cancer, then he probably doesn't, and then he probably does. They simply don't care and we don't know what to do. Thanks for ALL your videos and help to us Dr. Barry! Your diet info has saved his life up to now!
I live in NH. I love Dartmouth Hitchcock in Manchester. Their Oncology department is called The Norris Cotten Cancer center also in Manchester. I highly recommend them.
Thank you Dr! A question: Can we trust the established normal ranges for the values of these studies and, if not, where can we find information we can trust regarding these? I'm asking because, for example, the range amount of daily protein intake established is supposedly very low. Also, some minerals and vitamin healthy ranges vary depending on the amount of other minerals and vitamins in the body, or, if the body is metabolicaly healthy or not. I was thinking maybe there could be something like this going on with these studies.
2:58 hemoglobin a1c
3:37 complete metabolic panel CMP
3:58 complete blood cell count with differential
4:06 c peptide or fasting insulin
4:38 vitamin d25

5:15 ferritin level
5:31 fasting insulin or c peptide
6:03 ggt
6:50 homosystine level
7:05 high sensitivity crp

My doctor forgot to get me the Insulin test last physical which I requested (3.1!) so I looked a google seach for a lab to get it done at. Own Your Labs popped up and gives you a great description of the test and a price down to the cent. I signed up and paid for the test and was given instructions on the lab to go to to get it done locally. I did have to sign in for a portal for the lab. Then I compared the prices on their site to see if they were less expensive. OMG.
Here are some of the differences:
OYL LAB
Complete blood count $7.35 $29
Thyroid panel $27.74 $89
A1C $7.50 $39
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel $8.75 $49
Testosterone $26.08 $69
Vitamin D $39 $99
Same test, same place, same quick results.
Just want to save people a ton of money if they don't want/need to pay a copay go get these tests done at their dr's office.
Happy Testing!
@michaelainsworth6849. Where did you have your blood drawn? Are they associated with Labcorp?
As long as it’s a good lab that knows what they’re doing.
Thank you for sharing that valuable information!!
Your obgyn is right

Sorry but your obgyn is an idiot… you need to find a new one that actually cares for patients not just making their beach house payment! The last doctor I went to literally started arguing with me about me wanting a full thyroid panel and not just a TSH. I’ve had symptoms for many years… I just didn’t realize what it was. I’m going to be giving myself the gift of a full panel for Christmas! Crazy thing is is that I’m self pay so they have NO insurance paperwork and get paid at the time of my visit… they even have their own lab 😮 just draw my blood and flipping test it!!! Excellent info as always. I made a list to bring with next time I'm in for lab work:
A1c - For prediabetic or type 2 diabetes
CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) - Checks for liver function as well
CBC (Complete Blood Panel w/Differential)
C peptide - For prediabetic
D-25 - Telling if enough vitamin D from the sun or diet
DHEA-S - Overall adrenal gland health
ESR (sed rate) - chronic inflammation
Ferritin - related to hyperinsulinemia or chronic inflammation
Fasting insulin - pancreas releasing to much, metabolic syndrome and prediabetic
GGT - gull bladder, pancreas and kidneys... not only liver damage if elevated. Replaces alkaline phosphatase
Homocystiene - B12 status and inflammation overall
hisCRP - If elevated inflammation or infection that needs to be investigated
Lipid Panel -
Magnesium -
Phosphorus -
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) - quick look at thyroid function, if low or abnormal than need full thyroid panel
Urinalysis - Ketones, infection, damage, etc.
? Sex hormones - Testosterone and Estrogen

Thanks for your update! How’s it going?

Remember: your doctor also work for you.
Are you kidding? Surely You’re joking. The doctor works for “you”. If they aren’t listening to you, find another. That’s dangerous and insanity.
Doctors 99.9% are all ego. They live off ego.
bingo. telling a dr that you'd like a certain lab done can be a slippery slope. they do not want to be told what to do. esp if you're not suffering/complaining about a certain ailment. also, what does insurance cover is key. kinda pathetic.
Watch how doctors react when you call yourself the customer instead of the patient!

How did it go?

Me too. I’m going to have to check into exactly how to go about that..where to get the blood drawn etc.
Lab Corps also offers lab testing and is reasonably priced.

Wow, I picked a great primary care nurse practitioner then. She orders every one for me. I knew I trusted her for a good reason.
Woohoo, congratulations! 🌟
What area do you live in? I am having trouble finding a keto-friendly dr close to me.😢
Finding this video in the most difficult times of my husband and I’s life…Just last month, Early October at his annual physical he was told by pcp doc that his kidney needs to be check and ordered to be seen by a Nephrologist. Our world turned upside down 2 days after when Neph said his kidneys are failing and send us to Transplant center asap.
I don’t get how can a pcp missed this lab, when I called and asked our pcp she just said that she missed to call that egfr # last year which was already stage 4😢
Now all we have to do is move forward. Glad I’m my husband’s perfect kidney donor 💚 but my heart is still very heavy when I think of the what ifs…
PCPs are just "in-out-here's a Rx". Looking back I see I've been pre-diabetic for nearly 10 years. dammit.
@@jna9888 my husband was never told he has CKD. He takes low dose blood pressure medication. He has very aggressive autoimmune disease-Berger’s disease that attacks his kidneys.
That's pure negligence on the doctor's part!
I hope you found a new doctor that I was willing to work with you
Tell him it hurts and you are afraid you are going to die.
Congrats on the 2,000,000+ subscribers! Spreading the word to the masses instead of one patient at a time! keep the videos coming doc!
I get labs every 4 months. Since carnivore a year ago, everything is perfect. She checks everything. 64 and I feel 24. And swole.
Can I ask if you get a doctor/insurance involved? If you order them yourself, is there a way to keep out of pocket cost down? When I looked into ordering labs from Labcorp it was about $400ish for the labs I wanted drawn. Doctor won't order some, and insurance only covers them once a year
@@wesmcgee1648 Swole! Yay!
I finally got a CPeptide test. I couldn't believe it was normal. 3.5. My Dr couldn't believe it. Thank you for suggesting that test.
What is the ideal range for this test
Lp(a) (once in a life), ApoB (regularly), coronary artery calcium CT (at least once) - to prevent cardiovascular diseases + homocysteine, ADMA, fibrinogen.
And do not stop moving & exercise to the level you can - otherwise it will get worse.
have yu seen hiz vid on antibiotics; cauze less abortion of b-12
Keeping this plain and not bad mouthing the doctors allows me to forward this video to my doctor. Thanks Dr. Berry. I got 2 copies of your Labs book so that I can give one to my doctor.
I'm so glad you are giving us this information, thank you!
👩💻🗯" A thumbs up for you ".
There are a few here that I didn’t think about
Another great video, Dr. Berry. I went to a low carb diet two years ago. Dropped my triglycerides from 300 to 150! Low carb is the way to go.
Thank you for all the good information in your videos.
You got my vote for one of the best Doctor's ever!
You are the best! You helped me and my loved ones immensely.
😇 Love your halo! I get most of those tests done already, but that is because I "need" them done to keep track of my (bad) health.
I am glad I got a HbA1c done because my fasting BG was in the low 90s always. Well, pre diabetic I was.
How did you lower a1c? Low carb diet

Ulta labs did great for me. No Dr. Ordered my own labs online, scheduled online, results online...$99
What was the cost of the tests through Ulta? Do you mind sharing?
Thank you! I used to work for Quest Diagnostics, and didn't realize I could order on my own labs with Ulta and avoid the middleman markup. Seems that Quest Diagnostics acts merely as the draw station for Ulta. I'm on their site right now shopping for my labs.
Technically an ULTA Labs doctor reviews what you’ve requested and places the order for you
Had my gallbladder out in 2003 caused pancreatitis so last year I told my doctor I want a test for my pancreas just as a prevention she said I didn’t need it I said I’m paying for it and I want it sometimes you just gotta be your own advocate, and quit listening to what they think they know or don’t know
My dr got pissed when i asked for lab test for hoshimotos. Said it was a useless money making test. Hated when people ordered. I left not happy with him anymore. He was actually beet face mad
Mine won’t check either, she said you already know you have hashis 🤦🏻♀️don’t need to check
My endo would not, but my P.C. did
I took a list of labs I wanted done a week ago to my doctor and she wouldn’t do any of them.
That's not a 'Doctor'. Find a real one.

Fire her! She is supposed to be working for you!

@@Lola_West-Coast Thank you for your kind words. I wish you and your loved ones a blessed and joyess holiday season as well. God bless you.

My doctor orders most of this

That's a pretty good combo. check your BP twice/day when calm/relaxed and record. Keep your carb intake very low...
I decided to try Neo 40 to reduce pharmaceuticals. Bp down to 117/ 72.
Starting with a new doctor…this will certainly help me! Thanks Dr. B!
And a friends doctor ordered labs before a visit but did not order fasting insulin or C-peptide
She called and asked him about having these and he agreed
Her C-peptide was 16.4 and her fasting insulin was 23.3
He told her it was nothing to worry about! And he would see her in four months… But maybe try to lose some weight!

The greatest doctor on the internet ever!
What about Apolipoproteins B and A1?
Going to the doctor tomorrow to get this done, glad we live in time where information can flow freely. "for now at least"
Don't do colonoscopy as the laceration or colonic perforation percentage is high (50%). Better a stool analysis and it doesn't hurt.
Had 5 colonoscopies with no problems
Cancel the colonoscopy. It's a scam.

Thank you Dr. Berry I test my A1C at home every 3 months. Is it accurate. 2 years ago my A1C was 10.6. 1 year ago 5.7. Today 4.7
Is this after carnivore woe ?
I agree with this list for the most part. However...ESR (Sed Rates) are antiquated and are highly subject to the method used because manual methods can be affected by many factors in the process of testing. CRP (QUANT) is what I prefer over ESR and is, of course, different than hs-CRP. In order to get all these tests covered by insurance or Medicare, the proper diagnosis codes must be presented with orders which is often times a problem.
Amen!
I don't have to know what the doctor learned in medical school; I just have to learn what he didn't learn in medical school.
@DonStewart: best comment of the day.

They learned how to pay student loans by prescribing pills for life and cramming their schedule so full they couldn't talk to a patient if they wanted to.
I asked for C-peptide and my Dr said.. "Why?"
She said they would only test for that if my A1C or insulin looks weird.
CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Profile) checks Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium
For potassium levels it needs to be a more specific intercellular test. I know this because I lived the nightmare of my potassium almost being depleted. I had learned this info from Dr. Berg and Dr Berry here on youtube and my cardiologist finally listened to me and ordered the more specialized test...to his surprise, but not mine nor my nurse, I was almost completed depleted of potassium. I had like 9 symptoms that I was but no one wanted to listen to me...
Muscle spasms, heart palpitations and arrythmias, blood pressure high, muscles tired.
I truly appreciate you Dr Barry! Thank you for the wonderful list and video.

For that reason I go to the licensed naturopath, Dr Sean Ceaser, in Winnipeg. Check him out
more testing doesn't translate into better outcomes. public health care doesn't pay for full physicals because they aren't of value, no proof they do anything good.
My Michigan doc gave me a "Complete" no-touch physical 2 years ago. He has been replaced!
I was one of your early subscribers after seeing you on James Yeager’s channel. You’ve come a long way! R.I.P James.
Be prepared to pay out of pocket. Insurance may (very probably) not pay if there is no history or no specific symptom to justify said tests. I had to pay a retail lab for a D test so I could show my doctor proof I was defficient. Now they'll pay but I have to ask every time.
got it and thank the good Dr. for all his wonderful advice over the years
I did a fasting insulin test a few months ago and it was 76, which is literally off the charts, apparently. The results said that anything over 21 was high and abnormal, so I presume 76 is pretty bad. I started keto then, but have been carnivore for the past 6 weeks. I'll wait another month or two and then do that test again.
You'll be fine with the next test, good luck.
maybe your body was shocked by the sudden need for insulin.
Ideally it should be below 6. Follow IF & go low carb asap.
Thank you for this list - I'm going to use it ❤!

I’ll have to pay for them put it will be worth it.
@@WickedLowCarb thank you. Yes I will definitely get the book. I want to support Dr Berry anyway. He’s really a gift to all of us. :)

Thank you Dr ,God Bless You.
Great question
