How to install component car speakers | Crutchfield

  • Component speakers, also known as separates, separate the woofer from the tweeter to help raise the soundstage off the floor in your vehicle. These speakers systems use crossovers to send the right frequencies to the woofer and tweeter, and their installation is more involved than a normal speaker swap.
    See what car audio gear fits your car or truck: www.crutchfield.com/i-rYTVc2Q...
    The main ways this installation differs from that of a coaxial speaker is that you have to custom-mount your tweeters, and also find a place to stash the crossover block. Tweeters are almost always a custom job, usually requiring you to fashion a mounting bracket. Most tweeters come with some sort of mounting option, but your car will dictate which method works best.
    The sound quality gains you get from separate tweeters and woofers justify the means! Crutchfield's MasterSheet that we provide with your order shows you how to remove your door panel and the location of your factory speakers.
    In this video, one of our Tech Support experts shows you a typical installation so you can follow along if you get stuck. And don't forget, if you get your gear from Crutchfield you get free lifetime tech support, 7 days a week.

      The installation we detailed in this video didn't have that need but that information is often found in the owner's manual for the component speakers. Sometimes the crossover is labeled with short acronyms to indicate which terminals are inputs and which are outputs for each driver. If no owner's manual was included, we may have a copy if you are working with one we carried. Which brand and model component speaker are you trying to install?

    Very useful. NISSAN Almera S 2004 5-Door - I am having a problem understanding how to fit the Pioneer TS-A1600C CrossOver cabling between the Woofer (In door) and the Tweeter Cabling (In Window Column). Do I need to use the existing wiring and tap into it or run the new cabling up to the dash? Any tips would be appreciated.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have not researched the 2004 Nissan Almera's to know what to properly suggest. If you can confirm with a local installer than the tweeters in the pillars are wired in parallel with the door woofers, then a combination of splicing into the stock wiring from the door woofers before it gets to the doors and running a new wire to the tweeter in the pillar should work.

    Okay so what if you have a amplifier and your component speakers came with you know a 3 in by 3 inch crossover do you still use the crossover when you're hooking it up to the amp or no?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  ปีที่แล้ว

      In most applications the crossover will be installed. This includes setups that use one channel on an amp to power both drivers (one woofer and one tweeter connected to the same channel on the amp).
      Some high-end systems are designed with an active crossover so that each driver will connect to an amp channel. Woofer connects 1 channel of an amp and the tweeter connects to a second amp channel. This is the only setup that does not use the crossover that came with the speakers. And that is due to the active crossover that is being used elsewhere in the system.

I bought an aftermarket component set of speakers with external passive crossover to which you plug in only one power wire and from there it goes to both woofer and tweeter. I've been thinking about leaving the factory tweeter connected as it's not bad and mounting new tweeter externally (connected via crossover with the new woofer to the woofer power cable), so I would have two tweeters playing at once. Hi Uriel, sounds like you're working on a nice upgrade! What is the year, make, and model of your car? What location did you want to add the tweeters to? What brand and model 2-way speakers are you using now? What do you plan to use to power all the speakers?

      If you are planning to use the speakers on radio power (factory or aftermarket) you will need to swap the front door 2-ways for a component speaker and custom mount your tweeters in the A pillars, Uriel. The Kicker 46CSS674 components in the link below would be a great call!

    Is there a spacer to replace the built in spacer that the factory speaker had? I can see not having one being a problem with potential rattling.🤔

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A spacer would only fix mounting depth issues such as there is not enough mounting depth for the speaker at all or there is not enough mounting depth to be able to roll down a window. Other products help reduce rattling from mounting speakers. Speaker baffles are one such product:
      www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/g_762/Foam-Speaker-Baffles.html
      And other sound deadening products like those shown here:

      There are speaker mounting brackets available for many vehicle speaker locations to help get things lined up and prevent problems. If you are looking for new speakers, we are happy to check on that for you! What vehicle are you working with?

      @@crutchfield 2:40min. Into the video, the original speaker has at least a 1" riser built into it! Shouldn't the new speaker have one as well? If not why?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not necessary for a mounting bracket to be built to the exact same dimensions as the one used to mount a factory speaker. The factory has only one speaker they intend to mount. They also have complete control over getting a speaker built to use it. Aftermarket speakers of any given speaker size are not all built to the same dimensions. Some will need more mounting depth; others need more mounting height. Pushing a speaker that close to the door panel will greatly limit the number of speakers that can be installed and making a mount that is not as thick will help give more options.

    It shows every thing but he doesn't show you how to find old speaker wire to cut to add your crossover. The title is misleading for a total first timer

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  ปีที่แล้ว

      The only existing wiring was the wires running to the woofer location. There was no stock tweeter location in this setup and we cut a new hole for it and as such had to run new wire for it. The install in this video is different from yours and we recommend contacting technical support for help. We send our technical support phone number on the order invoice and recommend contacting them for help installing and wiring component speakers purchased from us

      I figured it out. It doesn't show you how in this video but I took a risk and unraveled all the tape from all the wires in the door to find the stock wire and the tweeter wires original. It doesn't show this part and I risked it. Payed off at the end. Ty for replying

    What about the crossover?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With a component system that includes an external 2-way crossover, the crossover typically gets installed inside the door panel. This video goes over that starting around the 19 minute mark.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stock systems don't usually have external crossovers. Those are either built into the amp or the speaker. Based on the fact that the woofer and tweeter in the front doors of your Sportage are wired in parallel to the same amp channel, we believe the speakers have the crossover built into them.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We didn't need to for this video as the component speaker system we were installing didn't come with separate crossovers like the one he held in his hand to demo. These speakers have crossovers inline on the tweeters while the woofers use their natural roll-off as their crossover. However, an external crossover should have identifiers on the speaker wire terminals to help identify which set are the inputs, the woofer outputs, and the tweeter outputs. This is most often found in the owner's manual for the components.
