This concert on public television was the first time I saw them. Phenomenal. And subsequent concerts, back in the day, were also great. Agreed, not a smooth jazz sound at all.

Pieces was the Rythm Section of Philadelphia's M. L. High School Jazz Band 1979 - 1981. "Take the A Train" was one of our standard renditions.
