As far as I can tell, TikTok-popular dark romance is only allowed to have violent possessive MMCs, and the FMC has to be comparatively innocent.

I have such mixed feelings about dark romance as a genre. One side of me understands that it's all fiction, all fantasy and a way to consider aspects of yourself, your sexuality and your desires in a safe space. Like I get that psychologically speaking. But then there's the other side of me (idk if its kinda radfem or what) that wonders if these women actually like these concepts, or maybe they're just conditioned by the patriarthy to enjoy the pain inflicted on us by men, because they'll do it either way. Like if we think about it, women are suffering from misogyny every day, and even in our dreams and desires we cant escape it, it's integral to our being. To debase yourself for a man is considered the most feminine quality. (Hunter Schafer wrote about this really well). No one is exempt from the patriarchal society we operate under, influencing our inner most thoughts. And for that reason, I cant help but feel sympathy? Especially because it's a journey we are all grappling with, in dismantling patriarchal ideals, no matter our gender.
It is pretty interesting to think about. What we like vs the influences that gets us to like something psychologically wise.

I think the worst part is that long time ago once upon a time, dark romance was under wraps in all forms because people knew it was taboo and what they liked was someone else’s nightmare and looked down upon. But also long ago dark romance had a lot of depth and story to it which sucked you in, it was an actual book instead of porn nowadays.
But now they brought dark romance into mainstream and it fucked up EVERYTHING. Now it’s just horror porn with extra steps, with barely legal potato FL’S And older abusive and shitty basic in attractiveness ML’s.
What these Booktok readers don’t seem to understand is that this drama should and is supposed to be shamed, you are supposed to be disturbed because it is meant to be dark. It’s somebody’s real life nightmare that you are reading, things people experienced, things like rape, pedofilia, racism, incest, abuse, kidnapping ect.
What you take pleasure in is somebody’s real tragedy so you should actually be glad it’s frowned upon because that means people understand how fucked up the subject is.
If you want to read dark romance and it comforts you or interest you then by all means go ahead, it’s not wrong to read it but what these people are doing it trying to force acceptance of it becoming mainstream and okay being celebrated and fawned over major platforms that people all over the world can see.
Read what you want but trying to fight with people who find it wrong and disturbing and trying to make it more popular makes you sick and twisted because now the real life victims who use these apps daily or read to escape cannot get away from it. Don’t expect to get sympathy when you push a damaging agenda as if the contents aren’t real life horror.

It’s not that people like being stalked irl, it’s just a way to bypass insecurities (feeling undesirable) and experience thrills (intensely desired by hot man) in a controlled environment.
Just because you enjoy Haunted Houses, Clue or Hannibal doesn’t mean you wanna kill people or be threatened with murder in real life!
*Still, I don’t think fantasies are always completely harmless.* The show 13 Reasons why did cause a spike in suicide rates irl, and I believe dark romance probably makes impressionable kids more likely to find abusive behaviour romantic.
The Hays Code, which banned almost all depictions of queer people and interracial relationships in Hollywood from 1934 to 1968 did have a huge alienating effect on irl queer people, and killed the careers of many POC actors.
Our media definitely shapes our social norms, and gender + beauty ideals. It also shapes which traits we see as shameful VS desirable as a culture.
But idk, I think it’s a grey area?
@@kaijuno what part of dark romances are the fantasies about? Is it the brooding? The hostile nature? The aggressiveness for absolutely no reason? The assault? You can say its a fantasy all you want, thats not the issue, its the fact that so many undesirable traits are in the mix it makes you question what people actually want in their fantasy.
The second bit basically goes with my first. If the entire point is to fulfill that fantasy then why add sexual assault into the picture? Cnc is a perfectly fine and informed thing, its exactly what you described even, but outright rape is a different beast thats handled even worse you'd think cnc is. Its so just fetishizing in general but it seems people hate it when you call it that.
By the way, with what you described its quite different. With Hannibal and Clue you're not the cannibal or the crazy person, you're the detective. When you are the killer its not like you're maticulously plotting to kill 5 people in a day, but Zade plots out the multiple ways he can creep on the MC. You go to haunted houses for scares, thats the point, you wanna be scared. Not every story is a self insertion after all.
SPEAKING OF SELF INSERTS, its very plausible that Haunting Adaline is a self insert story, so every part written here to some degree is something the author is attracted to and she makes no effort to hide or justify it. The stuff she does justify (the rape for example) is done so by the predator poacher plotline

This is why I am so scared to post one of my stories. It’s one about surviving abuse and is meant to comment on how young actresses and girls in media are taken adverse of, as well as how abuse can be mistaken for or trick people into thinking its love. The main character is a young girl who is being abused by a very possessive and older man who says things similar to the stuff in these tiktoks. But I’m concerned that since he’s a conventionally attractive older guy, people will read my story and swoon over him instead of getting the message: Beauty is a veil for awful people and how young people, especially girls, are unknowingly being abused of under the guise of love.
