Nobody in italy ever used "mio dolce" (unless it's some kind of inside-joke of a specific couple I guess). It's clearly a made-up couple nickname, probably made-up by somebody that does not speak Italian. When you use a possessive adjective ("mio" = my), you need a noun after it (most of the time). "Dolce" is another adjective. It's like calling somebody "My sweet lover" but without "lover", just "my sweet". My sweet what? What?! Unless "dolce" is intended as a noun, which in that case means dessert... But it's still wrong because when calling somebody "your something", you move the possessive adjective after the noun (eg. amore mio, vita mia, figlio mio, cara mia, etc.). So, the correct version would be "dolce mio", but it still sounds horrible and I doubt any actually Italian couple si calling each other this nickname. At least, I have never heard this and it really sounds horrible to my subjective Italian ears.

see, these tiktoks aren't even what dark romance is SUPPOSED TO BE. the reason the "bad boy" archetype was always appealing was because there is fundamentally a soft gooey center to him. it's fun because in that fantasy you have the privilege of seeing parts of him that nobody else does. and the privilege of that relationship not turning into one that's severely abusive lmao. there is NOTHING appealing about a guy who's just fucking cruel to you. they've ruined the genre entirely. i'm about to enter my joker era i swear to god.
Love me the bad-boy-who-is-secretly-a-teddy-bear trope. Almost ALWAYS pair that character up with the flirtatious-comic-relief-who-is-actually-more-sensitive-than-they-let-on guy….. …. Y’know what, I just say it. Klance, I ship Klance 😂 Still stanning those two idiots years later. Those two got me through a really rough point in life and helped me get out of an extremely toxic (my family claims it was abusive, but I’m not sure) friendship. Without a silly ship with two FICTIONAL characters, I very well could be still under the thumb of a very nasty woman.
typing this to save you future embarrassment- when you mean a smooth transition between topics, you mean 'segue' (pronounced segway) and when you mean automated scooter, you mean 'segway' (pronounced, you guessed it, segway) bless up
Italian speaker watching! Don't worry about the pronounciation at all, our "c" are so different you must have known some italian to get it! :) What I take issue with is the fact the op uses it as a pet name: unless you add "amore" (love) at the end we don't use it like that. Also even if you add amore, it's still something you wouldn't commonly use in public. Mio dolce by itself it's like calling your so my dessert or my cake. Better pet names would be: "tesoro" (tresure), "amore" (love), "luce mia" (my light) or "vita mia" (my life) Adding: PLEASE AMERICANS STOP ROMANTICIZING THE MAFIA. Imagine if any other culture romanticized the terrorists of 9/11... then imagine those terrorists were so pervasive in your country to have still people in the goverment. That's the mafia for us. Also the mafia has no kings
You think people don't romanticize terrorists already? 😭 I agree though, people should make up their own evil organization based in fiction instead of using the mafia.
grazie mille di averlo detto, mi sono cringiata fortissimo quando ho letto “mio dolce” anche perché, purtroppo, ho immediatamente capito il motivo dell’averlo scritto
Honestly, I read some dark romances but the key word is 'dark'. What TikTok girlies recommend are abusive not just toxic but the whole vat of industrial grade acid. Like whenever they hype books up it is mainly based on the tropes and certain specific scenes of the book not because the writing or the plot is good. People can read what they want but I can also judge how I want. One of the most heinous books that got hyped up was 'Haunting Adeline' which is a prime example of crossing the line from dark to straight-up criminal. Spoilers and SA TW. The main guy stalks and r-pes the main girl while ironically taking down sex trafficking rings (I guess it was the author's way of softening the blow). I saw one of the comments under a video criticising the book saying 'but she liked it'. The author and the fans of this book need to be studied. Idc if it's through vivisection
I actually had a small argument with one of them online. Let me tell you, they are absolutely disgusting and ignorant. The one I had argued with literally claimed Zade was innocent because Adeline's body "took a liking to it" and kept going on about Stockholm syndrome while knowing nothing about it. The fact that it was a female too would never fail to upset me
@@slutforaaron Frrrr, I hate the 'its just a book argument' because if it's making you think assault is okay because the victim "enjoyed it" then you're already too far gone. Like I get liking dark romance and Stockholm syndrome but stockholm syndrome mainly applies to kidnapping not SA. Istg all the smut is rotting people's brains.
My whole mantra has always been, you can have whatever kink you want....but don't be fricking delusional. I get that people out there have an SA kink but lets not be delulu and act like that shit is morally ok.
@@slutforaaronit such a dangerous way of thinking. If consent is striped frome someone it doesn’t matter how their body reacts. It puts the blame on the victim, framing it like they eventually started liking it. Like no sexual relationship should be built on that, of eventually not suffering. Its horryfying.
@@hadrianhexe9603 And let's be real right now, if people out there are getting a "kink" out of somebody literally being assaulted then they are clearly the problem and need to reboot their brain or something because they are anything BUT okay
Dark romance irritates me but the fans are even worse (not all of them, some are pretty chill and understanding that it’s not for everyone). They gets so offended when you call out that the the story is straight abusive and be like ‘Oh but it’s supposed to be like that it’s DARK romance!’ Like babe, it’s also a ROMANCE! I shouldn’t be struggling through some girlie getting assaulted and bullied but it’s ‘okay they’re in love’.
hello, im kinda late to this but i think as long as they know that it's fiction and should not be followed in REAL life then i think it's fine. these troupes make the stories interesting for some readers because sunshines and rainbows are good i know, but in terms of immersing readers to the plot, or giving character depth, making them likeable/hateable (if intended by the author hence the abuse or whatever they want) are plausible. though i agree the overdramaticness of the characters make me cringe LOL
the whole ‘you can’t escape me ‘ thing is creepy and unhinged but my mind first went to the thought of someone being with me 24/7 and thought “ oh no my social battery could never”
the one about the girl getting kissed without consent while she was having a panic attack gave me severe flashbacks to the HBO Max VELMA series where pretty much that exact thing happens 💀💀💀
VELMA has ONE good thing going for it - it was so horrifically awful that it united everyone in a hyper polarized society into agreeing on something, and it was that VELMA sucked.
Protagonists in those stories: "Omg it's so sweet that your boyfriend got you flowers when you met but mine threw me across a cliff and implemented an unborn alien inside my unconscious body that possessed my body and committed genocide as my sense of morality and individuality faded away eventually, he's so sweet 😊"
8:30 I’d like to think that he starts wearing the bulletproof vest because he thinks the child has it out for him, like it will come out the womb ready to shoot him
I read a comment that said smth along the lines of "the child shot out during child birth and the dad had to literally catch the baby" sooo 🤡💀💀😂😂 I can see that fictional man getting scared of a baby who shots out of the vagina and shoots towards his dad trying to kill him (hang him??)with his umbilical cord 😂😂😂
The thing i hate the most in BULLY ROMANCE is when the boy justifies his actions by saying that I BULLIED YOU TO GET YOUR ATTENTION , I WANT YOU TO NOTICE ME... like what the hell...
Okay, hear me out. As an avid reader, the enemies-to-lovers trope can actually be fantastic when it's done right. Usually, both are good or at least decent people who could use some character development. They might get off on the wrong foot because of a misunderstanding or one or both of them had a bad day causing them to act differently than they usually do thus causing them to hate each other's guts from day one. We get some interesting but keyword HARMLESS banter and they eventually get closer and figure out that they misjudged them and they're not a total asshole (Cue Beauty and the Beast "There may be something there that wasn't there before") They become friends and some plot device nearly keeps them from being together but in the end, they end up a couple, happily ever after, and that's the standard for that trope. However, there is a special subset of writers who do it wrong. Special of course is a euphemism for crazy sickos who romanticize bullying, harassment, or even violence and abuse. It usually places the guy as the "bad boy" and the girl as the victim- I mean the good girl. But the roles can be reversed just like real-life domestic violence which is exactly what these types of books encourage. The guy usually gets away with murder (like sometimes he actually kills people) just because he's described as "6'3 and devilishly handsome" while the girl ends up falling head over heals (Can anyone spell Stockholm Syndrome?) and forgives him completely because "He loves me, he's changed." So yeah, the trope can be done right or very VERY wrong and I guess you just have to read the reviews to weed out the bad ones.
i mean yes i agree, and there are good dark romances/enemies to lovers stories out there, but my god these tiktoks sound AWFUL lmfao. I wouldn't be caught dead reading this fr. The problem with this genre is for every good book theres like 20 awful ones, and you can't even trust people to recommend you the good ones because tiktok girlies will genuinely recommend haunting adeline for you to read....
@@katierasburn9571 Yeah these tiktokers are out here swooning over Colleen Hoover's books and I'm like "Please get help. Seek therapy. You can recover."
yeaaaahhh this trope has such a great slaying potential. Like you know that "Howl's moving castle" by Hayao Miyadzaki has a book origin and in this book the dynamics between Howl and Sophie is just like this trope (maybe it's a bit slighter than usual like at the beginning Howl kinda behaves like an arrogant child and Sophie grumps and hisses at him, but eventually they develop feelings for each other)
@@AthmosSounddesignAgree, the balance between giving the leads reasons to hate each while not making the audience also hate them is very, very difficult.
“A lot” and “borderline” lmao 90% of it is centered and built on severe abuse. He’s hot and/or rich, fucked up in a major way and extremely abusive. That summarizes pretty much all of women’s romance, the rest of it is borderline bestiality.
I feel like enemies to lovers and a little bit of dark romance can be understandable if it's in a fantasy book or dystopian novels but not in like a highschool romance or if it's too realistic..💀
I always try to remind myself of the cringey things I did when I was 14. Thank god it wasn’t as public as this mess. But also thank god the internet is in a place rn where we can immortalize this cringe to make fun of as adults and someday those kids will be adults and appreciate the shrine of their cringe too.
Is that a pillow behind you? That's so cute! But yeah, when Lydia kissed Stiles during his panic attack on Teen Wolf, I was like... wouldn't that just make him panic more?
Hey that painting of tiger behind you reminded me of a beautiful poem! It's about a women who can't achive her dreams due to patriarchal society so to express her desires she used to stich on curtains and one of her works were two tigers in the forest which she made in final moments of her life. (Sorry it's off topic.)
As a dark romance reader these are terrible. It can be hard to find good ones but the main draw for me is that both of the people have some levels of caring and consent. The darker parts are the trauma the characters go through outside the relationship and the power dynamic. Like obviously they aren't healthy relationships but the passion and strong emotions make for something interesting. It's also nice when the usually female lead has character depth and agency. It's mostly for funsies though.
i really want a dark romance where both of the people in the relationship are fucked up and they're trying to make it work together in their psycho world while they fuck other people over if that makes sense??
It is SO BAD. I’ve read this book, and it’s just pure flaming garbage. Like, the male lead is just a massive prick who mistreats the protagonist constantly, and his name is Dutch. DUTCH. No, his name isn’t Dutch as in Dutch in origin, it is literally the word Dutch.
Also, as an italian, i gotta say romanticizing mafia is really fucked up cause it's still a serious and dangerous matter in our country and believe me, you wouldn't want to get into that in any possible way, no matter how romantic it might sound. I personally am lucky enough to leave in a part of italy where it's not very common, and i still get the ick seeing how mafia is used as some sort of fetish, i can't even imagine how someone who's closer to the issue might feel This aside, very nice video as always, i found your channel pretty recently but i gotta say i already love it
Dark romance is so weird because why would anyone want to subject themselves to humiliation and possibly getting killed by a psychopathic person when you could just have a sweet and caring relationship?
i had this on in the background because its nearly 4 am and i have overdue work for every single class due TOMORROW (today in like 4-5 hours) but the way my head SNAPPED up when i heard "theres nothing like summer in the city"
I'm Italian and that "mio dolce" means was so unnecessary and we don't even say that, I rolled laughing. It was as out of the pocket as when Lana Del Rey threw in the cauldron some random Italian words in the song "Salvatore" 😂
Okay, I feel like it needs to be said that you’re legit super funny. You have a great ability to make up jokes on the spot that actually hit and that aren’t overused internet references.
Hot take: Dark relationships, IF you do them right, are actually very narratively compelling. What makes the difference is how deeply the author and characters engage with the ‘I can make them worse’ or ‘I can fix them’ trope. It’s quite realistic actually that someone in a relationship feels compelled to ‘save’ the other; however the writer and characters should be fully aware of this saviour-complex and make it another psychological tool to drag the character further into the line of fire. The writers, characters OR readers should hold NO illusion of this being an ’ideal’ relationship: nor can it be made so by one party’s sole effort. This is like. The complete opposite of a feel-good work, so it is definitely an acquired taste. But I enjoy this as a very precise dissection of human psychology and relationships, and makes it all the more rewarding when the people in the relationship MUTUALLY decide to change for the better. Or not. Whatever. It’s fun to see what happens. Also, dark relationships aren’t innately romantic; some of the most well-written dark relationships I’ve seen have actually been between siblings TL;DR don’t avoid all dark relationships, just those not self-aware
@@alchemistofsteel8099 not super familiar with their relationship, so can't say for certain. But what they give off to me is moreso "super damaged people have issues that prevent their relationship", while the kind I'm talking about is when one or both people unhealthily value their relationship above anything else, and become incredibly codependent as a result. Denji and Makima might be a closer example, but what I'm really looking at are the titular characters from 'The Coffin of Andy & Leyley' typa stuff
I like fked up romance when it actually dwells into the psychology of the characters. But most of it is just smut and character assassinations. Take haunting adeline. Zade meadows hates rapists, and pedos and kills them amd saves kids from rings. He is insanely devoted to his cause. Now why would any dude mindlessly have a rape kink and call his lover "little girl" there is literally no explanation.

It's at times like the TikTok Dark Romance makes me happy that I will stay far from Dark Romance. Like I wasn't in Dark Romance's Galaxy before now it seems like I'm nice and comfy knowing that I won't be having an anxiety attack while reading while questioning the storyline.
Whoever wrote the panic attack thing... either has never had one, or has panic attacks that are very very different from mine and what I've heard. Like DON'T FUCKING TOUCH ME when i'm having a panic attack
i know we can do the "why are you into this" while recognising it is fantasy but a big appeal of the 'date your bully' trope is a way of making the experience of being bullied more bareable. like people who were/are being targeted by bullies often end up with a lot of psychological trauma and to imagine a version where the bully eventually falls for you and becomes a protector instead is a popular coping mechanism. also unusual and dramatic character dynamics are just more interesting to read about.
And that idea can make for a really compelling story when the bully actually grows as a character thru recognizing the underlying reasons for their bullying (ie Daddy Issues); sincerely apologizing, taking full responsibility for his actions; making amends that are about her comfort, not his need to assuage his guilt; and working on himself so he breaks his pattern in order to be a better person and deserve his victim's love. Unfortunately, in too many cases, the author is so focused on keeping their love interest as a toxic alpha male, they don't bother with much more than a superficial apology dusted with excuses from him to his victim so when the she gets with him, she just looks weak and stupid for the dick and the guy still look like a dick. It's not compelling, it's shallow and vapid.
"Hey um...the line was actually, "I'm right here, " not, "Turn around and face me with your lazy eye, you lopsided skank...so..." Oh my goodness😂😂😂😂 7:32
6:05 im italian and it doesnt really mean cake lmao it just mean dessert obviously talking about food but to call a person youd have to say dolcezza or smth
I despise when kink or fetish things hit a larger audience because it immediately twists away from what it originally was and is misunderstood. I’m someone who enjoys genuine dark romance stories, but not because it’s romantic or something. It’s because sadomasochism is a kink. Suddenly 12 year olds (probably the people making these TikToks) are seeing this and thinking it’s cute when no, this is very unhealthy and we all know it.
5:07 I think they wanted to go for the Italian translation for "My Sweetheart"? But like, you won't hear an Italian say it like that, ever. A more appropriate translation could be "amore mio" (translated: "My love") o "tesoro" (literally means "treasure", but you should get the point). Edit: forgot to say this: while "Mio dolce amor" is also appropriate, "Mio dolce" still doesn't make sense at all. That's why the translator put "my cake" and "my dessert" as possible translations. Speaking of sweet-related pet names, there's actually one in Italian: it's "Zuccherino", a diminutive of the Italian word for sugar

see, these tiktoks aren't even what dark romance is SUPPOSED TO BE. the reason the "bad boy" archetype was always appealing was because there is fundamentally a soft gooey center to him. it's fun because in that fantasy you have the privilege of seeing parts of him that nobody else does. and the privilege of that relationship not turning into one that's severely abusive lmao. there is NOTHING appealing about a guy who's just fucking cruel to you. they've ruined the genre entirely. i'm about to enter my joker era i swear to god.

Italian speaker watching! Don't worry about the pronounciation at all, our "c" are so different you must have known some italian to get it! :)
What I take issue with is the fact the op uses it as a pet name: unless you add "amore" (love) at the end we don't use it like that. Also even if you add amore, it's still something you wouldn't commonly use in public. Mio dolce by itself it's like calling your so my dessert or my cake.
Better pet names would be: "tesoro" (tresure), "amore" (love), "luce mia" (my light) or "vita mia" (my life)
Adding: PLEASE AMERICANS STOP ROMANTICIZING THE MAFIA.

Especialy if the dude is hot like a red flag is a red flag even if it's pretty
hello, im kinda late to this but i think as long as they know that it's fiction and should not be followed in REAL life then i think it's fine. these troupes make the stories interesting for some readers because sunshines and rainbows are good i know, but in terms of immersing readers to the plot, or giving character depth, making them likeable/hateable (if intended by the author hence the abuse or whatever they want) are plausible. though i agree the overdramaticness of the characters make me cringe LOL
the whole ‘you can’t escape me ‘ thing is creepy and unhinged but my mind first went to the thought of someone being with me 24/7 and thought “ oh no my social battery could never”
the one about the girl getting kissed without consent while she was having a panic attack gave me severe flashbacks to the HBO Max VELMA series where pretty much that exact thing happens 💀💀💀

Emily trying not to smile is my favorite ad segue trope. Like, we both know it's happening, so more power to ya, girlie.
The problem with this genre is for every good book theres like 20 awful ones, and you can't even trust people to recommend you the good ones because tiktok girlies will genuinely recommend haunting adeline for you to read....

yeaaaahhh this trope has such a great slaying potential. Like you know that "Howl's moving castle" by Hayao Miyadzaki has a book origin and in this book the dynamics between Howl and Sophie is just like this trope (maybe it's a bit slighter than usual like at the beginning Howl kinda behaves like an arrogant child and Sophie grumps and hisses at him, but eventually they develop feelings for each other)
Thats not "Enemies to lovers" though, its literally "Inconveniences to lovers"

As a dark romance reader these are terrible. It can be hard to find good ones but the main draw for me is that both of the people have some levels of caring and consent. The darker parts are the trauma the characters go through outside the relationship and the power dynamic. Like obviously they aren't healthy relationships but the passion and strong emotions make for something interesting. It's also nice when the usually female lead has character depth and agency. It's mostly for funsies though.
i really want a dark romance where both of the people in the relationship are fucked up and they're trying to make it work together in their psycho world while they fuck other people over if that makes sense??

Hot take:
Dark relationships, IF you do them right, are actually very narratively compelling.
Also, dark relationships aren’t innately romantic; some of the most well-written dark relationships I’ve seen have actually been between siblings
TL;DR don’t avoid all dark relationships, just those not self-aware
Like revy and rock from black lagoon?

This is kind of a Stockholm syndrome mechanism at work here, I would say.
It's not compelling, it's shallow and vapid.
not sure if it’s the location or lighting or something but emily looks extra nice in this video. which is saying something.

I despise when kink or fetish things hit a larger audience because it immediately twists away from what it originally was and is misunderstood. I think they wanted to go for the Italian translation for "My Sweetheart"? But like, you won't hear an Italian say it like that, ever. A more appropriate translation could be "amore mio" (translated: "My love") o "tesoro" (literally means "treasure", but you should get the point).
Edit: forgot to say this: while "Mio dolce amor" is also appropriate, "Mio dolce" still doesn't make sense at all. That's why the translator put "my cake" and "my dessert" as possible translations.
