Lovely, the Doric Croissant. One of my favourite treats. Equally at home with savoury or sweet toppings. Originally made with all the butter, lard & salt so they'd stay fresh on multi day trips to sea on fishing trawlers. Used to be a wee shop off of Union street that did cheese rowies ... I used to time it so I'd get there while they were still warm from the oven. Whenever I eat them I think of sitting down with my Granddad on a Saturday afternoon, big bowl of homemade scotch broth & rowies that had been warmed in the brown paper bag under the grill then slathered with salted butter. Simple pleasure but a happy one. Many thanks for sharing the recipe with everyone, they get to make their own happy memories with a wee buttery treat.
Love your Natural accent. My family was from Scotland heritage but have been in the States since early 1800's. Traditions were lost in the years along with many things, and I've been researching over the years. Cannot wait to give these a go. Usually we are making Biscuits for breakfast, which are completely different from a normal English biscuit. Our biscuits are made from flour, bread and milk very similar to a roll but without proofing or sugar. Goes great with sausage and gravy, or putting an egg with cheese on it.
My dad came from Keith in Banffshire and we would spend summer holidays visiting my granny in Keith. Butteries were our favourite breakfast and I think we had them most days! As we live in the Midlands and granny is long gone, it's a long time since I've had a buttery, thank you for sharing this, I will definitely be trying this one out x
Yer, we are from Stonehaven and now in Aus. Really miss Butteries, so I made this recipe. Gold star, hubby and kids were so happy. They didn't last long.
I’ve never heard of Butteries before, oh how I’ve been missing out! You have inspired me to have a go at these! Thank you for telling us you have a small oven, because it’s inspiring to see how you make everything so doable!! I love your down to earth style, nothing very fussy or pricey, shows us how a home cooke can create some very awesome dishes!!!❤️👍🏻👏🏻💗
Oh good grief! I remember eating these when I stayed with some friends who lived in a little village called Kemnay, many years ago. Absolutely delicious 😋
These look marvelous! I have never heard of these, but am going to make these in my iron skillets to add a crispy bottom to them! Thank you for this love recipe and video. I am drooling!
Hi Cheryl, my Mum used to make these when I was a kiddy and we used to call them fatty cakes, we came from Yorkshire and it was about 70 years ago, I’m an oldie, and she also used to put raisins on top sometimes. I often do this when I have pastry left over, so it’s not wasted. It doesn’t rise as much but still tastes yummy. Thanks for your lovely videos, I really look forward to them. Love from Sandra.x
Those look so good. I’ve actually got some lard so I may give them a go, especially since its a long holiday weekend (Labor Day) here in the US.🏴🇺🇸
OMG! The slippery slope from Lorne sausage to rowies! I MUST try these, haven’t had one since my last trip home in 2014 (also Arbroath smokies mmmmmm..)
Im just back from gardenstown in Banff and tried Butteries for the first time! Omg I ate them the whole week with strawberry jam and since coming back to Glasgow I have struggled to find one as good! Aldi have them but they dont taste the best. Im going to try this recipe for sure! Looks amazing ❤ xoxo
I've made these twice now and my husband and I are ADDICTED...the only thing....I can't get my USA converted weights correct for butter and lard I always have it seap out....while rolling out each layer....it doesn’t change the look or taste it's just a bit messy 😂😂😂😂 But Thank-you SO much for your recipe I'm now following and going to give several of your recipes a try!!! We're in USA but my husband's DNA is Scottish and mine is Danish/ Scott and Irish no wonder we love the foods and music of your country ❤
i will definitely be making these tomorrow morning. i have been making your morton rolls recipe for the last few weeks(and your caramel tart-see my instagram and facebook photos)really enjoy your laid back style of presentation, and your skill in the culinary arts. thank you once again for sharing these recipes with us, from a happy wee edinburgh guy.
@@billyaitken7461 exactly! Or potato soup, ham & beans, clam chowder, lol, can you tell I’m ready for Fall to be here? So stinking hot this summer and I just want to get the garden cleaned up and ready to plant for next spring. Then I can retire to my sewing, baking, and reading a good book before the fire for the long, cold, snowy Idaho winter. Have a great weekend, TeresaSue.
I will definitely be making these because I absolutely love butteries and I;m from Northumberland, I did make them about 30 yrs ago and they were a success but I am going to have another go.
So interesting how food changes from one village to the other. I lived in Pittenweem on the East Coast but never saw these. Mind you it’s farther south than Aberdeen but you’d think they would pop up in a bake shop or cafe. They look delicious.
My mum’s family moved to Aberdeen when the British left India (soon to be back to its original name (India is a British name) Bharat!) Her family are massive, and we’re quite the celebrities when they moved in the late 1940s. Whenever my mum goes back to see them, or if they come down to see us, they always bring a few bags of butteries. Unfortunately, my mum is now the eldest, having started as 4th out of 14, and is 96, so the trips are infrequent now. I was brought up in a place called Corby, which used to be known as “Little Scotland”, but I live quite a drive from there and so I can’t get butteries regularly. Your recipe will allow me to eat these again (in moderation, as they really are bad for you in excess, lol!) I’m going to make some this weekend and take them over to my mum. Thanks for this recipe.
I know this is late, but just butter is better, it's more authentic actually, batteries with lard is not the traditional recipe, it was started to cut costs.
nice Cheryl, I don't have Lard at home..ever..not sure where I could buy lard in the Netherlands, but they look fab a bit like our pain au chocolats ( but Dutch)I wonder iof lard would go with sweet , must try ;-)
Hi Cheryl, first time for me baking “Rowies!” Fantastic, I’m from Arbroath but live in Devon. I did your morning rolls yesterday, very good, so went looking for Aberdeen rolls today and you have done them as well. Am I surprised😂😂😂 I wasn’t sure about the plain flour but they were delicious. You have a great channel and I love the name. Keep up the great work. Love the shots of the Firth of Clyde and Aran, must visit the island in our campervan some time soon. Spend a month in Scotland in September but we were way up North. Dropped into Arbroath for a pair of Smokies, yum yum. Cheers from Mike 👍🍷🥃
I've been to Aberdeen many times as a child. My family originally is from Brechin. On my father's side it's Glasgow. I've eaten all of these rolls etc..one thing I never enjoyed scones!!
Instantly called a local poultry farm. I'll have to wait 'til nov. , but they sell pure goose lard (I've health issues with pork). On my list for sure! Thanks for sharing from the far north of Germany!
Hi Cheryl, we live in Turriff not too far from Peterhead. Def got great butteries over here in our bakers! Will def be trying these, love one with a bowl of soup x
I was born in Turriff. My parents moved to Canada but when we came back to visit these butteries were a favourite of mine. As I child back then mine were slathered in butter and lyalls golden syrup. 😮
I'm doing these now. I'm in Australia and even though it is winter my dough is quite loose after layering the butter and lard so I've popped it into the fridge to firm up a little before cutting them. Can't wait to try these! I'm also going to try your fish cakes tomorrow, but can't get cod. I'm in the countryside and can't get fresh fish so I'll have to use defrosted frozen whiting. I'll let you know how they come out . Hubby was an Army chef and he'd never seed them done with baked potatoes. We think they will be Wonderful compared to using mash.
On a weekend trip to Aberdeen to visit friends, I found that people had to get out to the bakery first thing on the Saturday morning, before the butteries were sold.
Cheryl these are so delicious. We enjoyed ours with some honey on the side and it goes really well. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Are there any traditional ways to serve them?

That memory sound amazing man 🙌
Love them heated up in the toaster so they are crispy 😋
With golden syrup and butter it’s heaven on the tastebuds. Heaven!
I like to add a wee bit of mustard powder in the dry mix and then grated cheese in the folds so that they come out nice and cheesy
That's a lovely idea! 😊
You put the cheese with the butter?? What kind of cheese??
@@tinkerbellwiz I use English Cheddar but you can use any flavourful cheese.

You can have cheese with a buttery but not in it !🏴❤️
