  • Previously lost deleted scene from David Lynch's DUNE (1984) featuring Lady Jessica (Francesca Annis), Alia (Alicia Witt), and Molly Wryn (Harah). It features Harah telling Jessica of the Fremen's fear of Alia, after which Paul's sister uses The Voice to attack Harah.
    This video features a brand new introduction from Wryn, whose performance was mostly deleted from the theatrical version of the film released in December of '84.
    4K restoration and visual effects by Matt Caron. Interview and editing by Max Evry. Original VHS source provided by Molly Wryn.

      They never should have changed her voice either. She's so unnerving here. The dub voice is meme quality. This is such an important scene. I can only imagine how much more tense the finale when she enters with the Baron and Emperor would be, them not knowing what a little psycho and how powerful she is until she slaps Helen around with her mind bullets.

      Some decisions I have to divorce myself from what I know of the book for it to make sense. I have to believe he's making something for people who didn't read the book and who likely never will, which is most of the audience. She tried out the blue eye drops that were the first option considered for the Fremen characters, but I think they gave her a bad reaction. Amazing to see this after such a long time, I presume the sound effects would have been added over Alia's voice, this was raw audio. Max Evry's book indicates Lynch's preferred edit would have been about 3 hours. Come on David, we are all waiting. I wonder if there is any existing footage of Rabban in the bathtub. Its not clear if they got a usable shot due to Paul Smith's nervousness about getting electrocuted after smashing an oil filled light bulb above him. It's detailed on the late Kit West's website.

  • @getinyepigs
    @getinyepigs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    This would be more complete if the same audio effect was applied to Alia when she shouts the word “VOICE” as was applied to Paul / Muad'Dib when he shouts “Traitor” after killing Feyd in the OG movie. (And also same overall effect on her whole lines as Jessica had when saying “Release my bonds” etc in the ornithopter).

    So we only have this because they probably gave it to her for a professional 'reel'... like a video resume for actors. I suspect Dino had the negatives destroyed that was not included in the theatrical cut done by his daughter. Lot of stuff cut out that actors didn't even get to keep. Coming into the city. The palace garden. So sad.

    TY both Max and Molly ! I'm the same as many others here - saw the original release 11 times in theatres, and likely hundreds more on all home video formats, as well as Spice Diver's cut. Read anything I could get my hands on - including a 2nd draft script. This gives me hope that more "workprint" footage may yet surface. If only the studio would get behind a proper restoration - Max, do you think enough WP footage still exists to warrant it ?

    Thank you for adding this. It was an incredible shame this role was all but cut from the release, other than appearing in the final great hall scene (without explanation). And then a few of the other deleted scenes when Jamis was also included. I was surprised the role was not included in the Dune 2, especially as Jamis had a far greater role in the new Dune even compared to the Lynch uncut version. Would love to see a full version with EVERYTHING that Lynch shot.

    To all fans of Alicia Witt(Alia), she appears in season five of Justified. She is Wendy Crowe, the redheaded paralegal who is Daryl Crowe's sister, part of the Dewey Crow clan. She did great. Loved seeing the little Dune character all grown up. For those who don't know, Harah was the wife of Jamis, the Fremen Paul killed as part of being accepted by the Fremen. She became Paul's responsibility when Paul killed Jamis. I found it hard to understand what Alia was saying. I think she said the following: "Would they deny me that which is mine? Would they deny me the use of spice?"

    Sadly, when you make a 4 hour movie and the Studio steps in and cuts it to fit into a 2 hour run time, somebody's going to end up on the cutting room floor. The Extended version of David Lynch's Dune helps to make more sense of the narrative, but it's just a lengthy story. To her credit, there's more emotional weight in this one scene, than all of these latest CGIfests. And A greater range of visual design and especially COLOR.

    I went to see DUNE the 40th anniversary edition on the big screen a month ago and we talked about Harah being cut from the film. She is in the extended version when they put Jamis' body into the machine to extract his water, but if you don't know who she is then her small scene with her sons at the end is easy overlooked. They should have left the fight with Jamis in as well. This is awesome to see all these decades later!

    The Fremen woman and the two children...the Pug! Is there a relationship?
    As a child seeing this on UK TV in the late 80s, I was drawn to the two children and the woman standing behind them in the final scene of the film. I didn't understand their significance, but I knew they were important because they were closer to the center of the room than the other Fremen, and about as close as the villians - and one of the children was holding an Atredies Pug, which the Duke himself was holding earlier in the film.
    Even to this day I'm convinced that the Pugs are key to everything in Dune!
