    Tesla owners: what made you go for this car over the other options on the market?

      The efficiency (5 miles/kWh at 70 mph on long motorway runs), the range (I've had 285 miles from the same model that you've reviewed here). Mainly, though, the Tesla Supercharger network and how it's built in to the sat nav. Also 15,000 miles free Supercharger usage sweetened the deal!

      Sara Dietachy. She does Tech Reviews and decided to get one a couple years back and reviewed it as more of a piece of tech/ipad on wheels rather than a car. That, Tesla being some of the most safest cars on the road with the highest safety scores sold or for me. Having all those extra eyes on the road while you drive, getting a little ping when the traffic light turns green, your phone being a key, Sentry Mode, the Super Charger network, EM may be a d I c k but look at how he’s forced car companies to make EVs or risk falling behind.

      Safety is literally top of the line. Honestly if you have a family, nobody protects you more than Tesla.

      I bought my M3 LR about 4 years ago. Public charging wasn’t as good as it now, so the Supercharger Network was a big factor. Having said that, I hardly ever have to use it.

      For us the deciding factor was the 100% vegan interior. Obviously, we're vegan and have no desire to have dead animal skin against our own skin. Believe it or not, it's nearly impossible to get a 100% vegan interior in a car. You can opt for cloth interiors, certainly, but things like the steering wheel and gear knob will be leather. And who wants a leather knob, eh? Sadly, although Tesla use Michelin wheels sometimes (that are vegan), our Model Y ended-up having a different make. Most tyres are created in a manufacturing process that uses stearic acid, which comes from animal sources.

    I had the same car for 24 hrs on a test drive. Went around many roundabouts and got used to the indicator buttons within a few hours. It's not a big deal at all. Excellent car, my order is in.

    Most those hidden away options are changed via voice or with the buttons on the steering wheel like windscreen wipers speed it easy and all detailed in the manual.

    Good honest review. I liked watching a Tesla noob experience the charging network for the first time! I would have skipped at least one of those charging stops and found one closer to the hotel. Hope you make more content with this car.

    Remember you can put desired shortcuts at the bottom of the screen. You can control the wiper speed with the left scroll wheel. No need to go into menus while driving. There is also speech recognition of commans.

    Now on my second Tesla Model 3 upgraded to the performance. Can sum Tesla up quickly They are like an Apple product. They just work. Excellent cars IMO

    16:36 "everything is drive by wire"? maybe not. The power steering is electric, not hydraulic, so it feels much more responsive and precise than any other cars I've driven, but unlike the CyberTruck, *all other Tesla models currently have a steering shaft which is mechanically linked to the (rack and pinion?) steering mechanism*. I do not know about the brakes. The accelerator pedal has no need for any mechanical linkage to the carburetor and can when let off (if so configured by the driver) will actuate regenerative braking with the motor(s) or even trigger some true braking if the battery has too high a charge to accept power from regenerative braking.

    As for lack of stalks: One reason I bought my Model Y last year was I was concerned that Elon would prematurely eliminate the stalks. Many folk who have been driving stalkless Tesla's have adjust just fine to the buttons, but I wasn't sure I would be one of them. However, with a drive-by-wire system like on the CyberTruck, even old codgers like me could probably adjust, so if such steering comes to the other models, I'd be willing to take a chance on learning to use them -- even on traffic circles (there are more and more of those showing up on this side of the pond these days).

      Have to admit that it took about an hour to get used to the indicator buttons instead of a stalk. Mark's right about the buttons being over the other side of the wheel almost when navigating a roundabout but I've found that you can easily access the left indicator button with your right thumb when you approach the exit that you're taking. It's pretty much second nature now.

    Great review as always! I have has a model 3 for 2 and a half years and wouldn’t drive anything else. The range is great and considering I drive 25000 miles a year hardly ever have to charge it ast a super charger

    11:44 charge at destination: I normally charge at home, because energy costs less than a third at my house than it costs on the road. This incentivises charging up to 80 or 90% right before I leave on a trip and I aim at having around 10% when I get home, in order to shave a few dollars off the cost of the trip, and up to 30 minutes off the time charging on the trip.

    A nice well balanced review the only thing I would add is the Range you quoted is for the less efficient 19 inch rims. The standard range on 18 inch rims will do 355 WLTP miles. The long range does 420 on the smaller wheels.

    4:22 Phone app entry/exit/starting car: some people (including myself) have claimed one must fiddle with the phone a little at times. Most of the time everything works perfectly, but once in a while I'll need to take out my phone and bring the app to the foreground or even sometimes kill the mobile app and reload it before my car will recognize me and let me into the car or start the car. I had the problem sometimes with an iPhone 11 Pro and now still have it sometimes with my iPhone 15 Pro.
    I don't find it much of a bother, and as I said, it usually works just fine, as smooth as you make it sound here, Mark.

    Great review of the new Model 3. I've had my "old" 2023 Model Y LR AWD (Perl) for just over a year now and loved 12,080+ of the 12,110 miles that are on the car. The only exceptions were those miles already on the car (maybe 10?) when I picked her up in Georgia, the 10-15 miles my wife drove Perl when her truck was in the shop and about one mile of the 150 when I was driving myself on my way home to Alabama from picking Perl up in Georgia (Tesla can't deliver direct in Alabama). That one mile of dread and regret came from trusting the automatic wipers on the highway in an extremely heavy rain. Tesla has since greatly improved the auto-wiper experience, but those moments last July, when wipers stopped in the middle of a frog-strangler while traveling down the highway at 70mph in moderate traffic will forever be in my memory.
    The lesson I learned was to make sure I know how to override Perl's auto-wiper control (and likewise the automatic bright lights).

    Really nice video. Couple of things. Steer-By-Wire isn’t available yet. Just in the Cybertruck but should trickle down to Model 3 and Model Y. You don’t need to go into the menu system to access things like the wind screen wiper speed. Just press the wind screen wiper button on the steering wheel and a menu pops up on your side where you can use your scroll wheel to change the settings/speed. Ditto with other things like the headlights.

    I wish you had FSD 12.5 and steering by wire. That would have made you flip your opinion on shifting and steering wheel controls I think.
    Soon, the UK and EU will get the next hardware revision and software approval.

    Very interesting review, and interesting to see satnav route planning involving charging stations being put to good use (I'm a patent examiner and have dealt with a few applications like this).
    I do however think you're using the word "sparse" incorrectly - I think you meant to say that the interior is spartan.

    Great review. I agree the indicator stalks and drive selector going are probably a step too far. One thing you would learn with extended use is all the short cuts to access things and to just trust the nav and follow the suggested charging percent. It is much quicker charging to 80%. The last 20% takes considerably longer. And also, it’s like any other piece of tech, it gets new software updates all the time which really add to the car in meaningful ways

    The Renault Zoe has lock and unlock with the key in the pocket. Seatbelt off and it engages park.
    I bought a Kia because it has buttons and stalks. I like a Speedo in the direct view not on the screen.
    The Kia cruise control keeps you in lane (automatic steering) which I find a bit creepy.

    Might be the lighting and it looks different in real life, but the car looks very black for grey. I usually find the official car colour strange and not reflective of what it actually is though.

    I think it’s a bit unfair to review a car without getting to know the controls properly. The wipers are easily controlled without going into the computer settings. Just press the wiper button and then use the left scroll wheel. Without taking your eyes off the road, you can get to any wiper setting you want, I quickly got to know how many clicks of the scroll wheel to do to get to any wiper setting. As for the indicators, here in Australia we also have to indicate left out of the roundabout. So as I go into the roundabout, I just make a note how far I’m turning the wheel and I can easily pick the left indicator, without looking at it. It’s just a matter of getting used to these things. Like you got used to storks, which I’ve always disliked. I’m old enough to have had cars before storks became popular and the system back then worked well.

    What about the suspension? I have read owners complaining the Tesla ride can be quite stiff making it uncomfortable especially for the back passengers.

    I enjoyed the video. I am a long time model 3 owner and agree about taking away the stalks and the windscreen wiper controls/ Lights.
    I have no problem with the HVAC and entertainment controls as I rarely touch those while driving. The voice assistant could be improved. I use my wife as a voice assistant on long journeys ;)

    So how much longer did it take you to do that journey compared to a petrol car where you would spend 5 minutes at a petrol station?

      Possibly about an hour. Maybe less when you factor in the fact that I usually stop during such journeys to take a break and work. Didn't feel like any longer, to be honest!

      The assumption that such journeys must take longer is based on a non stop drive.
      I'll offer an example leg from our drive from East Midlands to Madrid.
      Starting from Calais, ending at a hotel South of Bordeaux, Le Teich. This leg was 576 miles.
      Note Google maps offers an optimistic 8 hours 35 minutes and so my question to you would be: In that 8 hours 35 minutes, would you eat? Would you stop for the loo and have you ever timed those activities? Unless you're hell bent on racing the clock, they typically take longer than perceived.
      Anyway, given that we left at 6am, we stopped for breakfast, later on lunch and a couple of loo stops.
      During those, the car charged and our stop times were: 24 mins, 35mins, 36 mins, 19 mins.
      The last one could have been avoided had I chosen to charge overnight at the hotel but instead opened for a nearby supercharger (v cheaper) so that was a choice.
      So the question now is, to include lunch and breakfast and a couple of loo stops, is 1.5 hours a reasonable amount of time to stop on such a journey regardless of vehicle?
      Now out there is always something who will scoff, state that they drive 10 hours non stop, take a packed lunch and eat and drink on the go. Fine, whatever, if that's how they want to enjoy such a journey.
      Ironically, the charging times usually end up getting extended because we haven't finished eating.

    Great video… interesting as well. Seems like so many people have made their minds up about Tesla being shit- without even giving them a chance. Takes slightly longer obviously, but how does it compare on cost for example? I’d really like to know on running costs- not just energy or petrol but servicing and purchase price etc. compared to a fossil fuel equivalent car.

      We have a Model Y, 2 years in, no service costs because Tesla doesn't specify service to maintain warranty. It does have a service schedule but how that's performed is up to the owner.
      We've just done 3,000 to Spain and France. Cost was £247. The first 250 miles cost negative money because I'm on Octopus Agile and charged when the price was negative, literally got paid to charge.
      This works out at something like 8.4p per mile. A trip to Italy was about 11p pretty mile. French Superchargers are cheaper.
      Home charging is typically about 2p per mile, rarely use Superchargers in the UK, no need.
      We have diesel, petrol, LPG cars too, the diesel did the most last year, a whopping 1,703 miles versus 10,000 in the Tesla.

      @@Vartan297 Correct, all EV's are not Tesla. We had a Leaf back in 2015 on a 2 year lease as an experiment. Idea was to shuttle around town, school runs etc. and it did that just great. The only other trip we did was to parents which was 70 miles each way and had a 7kW charger installed at my parents. Never attempted a trip as the infrastructure really wasn't there back then. Nissan also had a scheme where you could drop the car off and take a petrol car for a limited time on a trip such as holiday. That was a simple approach to the occassions where the Leaf didn't suffice. We never used that, other cars available.
      Like many, we'll go months without touching a public charger so the regular "my diesel does 700 miles and I get home with 300 left" is really a bit daft, that only means no need to refuel but that's just a deferral. On the other hand, someone in an EV could do 200 miles every day (1000 a week) and never have to spend any time charging if they can charge at home. That's MORE convenient than having to go somewhere to fill up but the narrative is that holding a nozzle somewhere is convenient?!
      We did try other EV's, many would suit our needs, the Tesla choice was that it was available in the timescale desired and as a car, we just wanted to be able to use it with the minimal effort and superchargers really deliver that. No apps, no payment card needed, just turn up, plug in and done. Very very seamless. For someone who rarely travels and needs public charging, this wouldn't be missed.

      I drive a Model 3 with 110.000km that I bought used at 40.000km
      First real service besides mandated inspection hasn't happened yet but I have an appointment for tomorrow 😅
      The control arms are surely done and they might have to change brake fluid but other than that, I can't think of anything that would need any special care.
      I've changed the interior cabin filters twice. Seasonal tire change.
      I think that's all...
      Don't know about equivalent ICE car cause I would have never bought an ICE car for that much money, since the running and insurance costs are enormous.

    Soo 600 miles needs 4 recharging stops?? I thought at the start you said the range was over 300 miles so why 4 stops?. I know that it is good practice to take breaks when driving distances but even my MX5 with a small petrol tank does an easy 400 miles on that kind of run, this where EVs still loose out on the the high speed mway runs, whereas petrol cars do better. Anyway interesting I don't think I could live with the lack of stalks - especially the indicator stalk - and proper buttons for most needed features Ac etc.

      You wouldn't normally charge to 100% then drive down to 0% on public chargers. The First and last 10% are far slower than the bit in the middle, so the journey is faster if you make maybe a few more, but shorter, stops. I would also guess that he left it longer than the car wanted at the first stop (eating tends to take longer than charging) and also overcharged at Larkhill as there aren't SuperChargers between there and Lock Lomond and was nervous about getting there and back.
      This was the Standard Range version of the Tesla, not the long range, so there will inevitably be more stops. Basically this one means a stop every 2 hours, the Long Range every 3 hours, at motorway speeds.

      Would you drive 400 miles non stop though? People eat, pee and poop.
      Comparable journey of ours recently, Calais to Le Teich, South of Bordeaux. 4 stops but the last one was a choice to use a nearby supercharger to the hotel. I could have avoided this one by charging at the hotel.
      The stops were 19, 35, 36, 24 mins.
      So removing the optional last one, Do you think 1.5 hours time to stop on a journey including breakfast and lunch is reasonable on a journey that Google gives as 8 hours 35 mins?
      Sure, there's always someone who claims to drive non stop or swaps drivers and eats on the go will be a bit quicker but for us, no issue stopping and taking a break to eat.

      I've driven it, it's not an issue at all and feels natural once you are used to it. Took me a couple of hours to get used to it.

    Sorry would not give it house room. £40,000 really. We have 4 Telsa supercharger stations for the whole of Devon & Cornwall. Eh! That interior is not for me. Hydrogen is the way to go.

      "Hydrogen" has hardly any fueling stations world wide. It takes longer on average to fill up than charge, thanks to lines freezing. It's substantially more expensive than petrol or diesel up to 3x. It's good gravimetric energy density is a laughable point considering it's volumetric energy density is so horrendous that you basically have no trunk space, frunk, or headroom because you are sitting on giant tanks.
      Last but not least, even if you could fill it at home for pennies like an EV, you can't park it in the garage, because it constantly vents to prevent over pressure and flipping a light switch could ignite the air. You ever seen a gas leak?

      It doesn't need CarPlay. The user experience is far and away better than anything CarPlay can offer. The Spotify experience is 1000% better. The maps are way better, especially as they are also integrated into the supercharger network. You can watch TH-cam, Netflix, Disney + when you are stopped. I usually watch it whilst I am waiting for my kids at clubs. It is a perfect way to pass an hour or so. My wife has CarPlay on her car and I have to say I feel sorry for her with the experience the Tesla infotainment provides.

      @@leonmorley9091I’m not denying the inbuilt stuff isn’t any good. But I’m on Apple Music and have a number of apps I like with CarPlay. It’s baffling to me that neither Tesla or Rivian support it. I’ve had CarPlay in my cars for the last 8 or so years. Would be hard not to it have it going forward. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Car play can be made to work in a similar way but there's just little point.

    What! 965 km in 12 hours. No thank you! Basically this is from Toronto to Ottawa and back. I have done this in 9 hours with two gas fill-ups. Given the price of the Tesla the cost of the gas is a wash. Plus, I can pull over whenever and wherever I wish to refuel.
    Don't talk to me about "carbon footprint" or environmental as it's proven an EV with a large capacity battery takes a minimum of 10 years to break even environmentally to an equivalent gas vehicle. Hopefully, one day EVs will be equal or better than what we already have. They just aren't there yet if you need to leave the city.

      He said how long he stopped to charge it was under an hour and he over charged massively, this is Tesla's slowest charging vehicle that costs 35k in north America.
      The long range RWD 3 has nearly 400 miles of range per charge and charges 30% faster at 1200miles/ hr
      It's also only 3k more with significant upgrades.
      The crazy thing is people like you don't even bother looking at fuel costs or home charging. I spend less time charging than you spend filling up because I charge at home. 3 second to plug and unplug. $7 to fill from 0%. Total cost of ownership is lower than a Toyota camery that cost 20k. And no maintenance.

      Reference for your 10 year claim ? You made it up didn't you? in the UK it's really about 1-1.5 years, so all EVs are far more efficient over their lifetime.

      The 10 years break even quote is the usual misinformation - in really, it’s 10-15k miles. Also, EVs don’t pollute towns and cities where petrol/diesel pollution leads to 1000s of premature deaths.

    What a faff! 600 miles and 4 stops! You were lucky you didn’t have to wait for a charging point, imagine a few years down the road when there are more EVs on the road and you have to add wait times to the 4 charge times. The convenience we currently take for granted with the internal combustion engine is being eroded away and we are being nudged into excepting the inconvenience of these multi stops as the new normal.

      I charge at home and only need to use public charging on journeys of >250 miles which I don’t do on a regular basis. So, 95% charging at home which cost less than 2p per mile. You can keep your diesel.
