  • The Big Picture looks at the state of a world trying to be a world again, and how we balance the need to see "normal" again with the new understanding of how different "normal" has been defined for so many of us. Also, some "PURGE" and "RICK & MORTY" jokes.

I miss my local store's game night. I think my husband and our roommates are badly in need of that. One in particular seems to be collapsing inward on himself and isn't really letting us address the issue. ("I'm fine. I'll handle it.")
Game night lets us get out of the house and interact with people from our community. Not just fellow nerds, but also curious people who wander in. Kind of like church without religion.

Whilst I am also eager for certain things i.e. seeing close friend groups to go back to 'normal' there are a ton of things that I've really found persoanlly refreshing about the situation. The slowing down of the world in general so I don't feel like I'm constantly on the verge of fomo or falling behind, people being forced to keep their distance and population centres not being as busy as before.
The contactless pickup from stores and just generally things being geared towards accomodating people working from home or housebound for whatever reason.

Even once I'm fully vaccinated, I'm still hesitant to resume normal activity for a few reasons you didn't mention.
    - The virus is still going pretty damn strong, and we know it's mutating. Being around people who aren't vaccinated, or vaccinated people are regularly associate with those who aren't, mans I could be putting myself at risk for a variant that the vaccine doesn't work on. Also, the vaccine doesn't necessarily prevent me from inadvertently passing the virus onto someone that is vulnerable.
    - I don't want to contribute to the normalization of resuming normal activity too early. India loosened up too early and that really didn't work out for them.

Somebody made a point once: wheelchair ramps help everyone, not just the people in wheelchairs.
Got a kid in a stroller? Got a toddler who isn't up to stairs yet? Got a heavy delivery on a dolly? Old? Heck, blind or asthmatic or some other disability that ISN'T a wheelchair but makes stairs difficult? That ramp helps you too.
That's what's going to happen with a lot of this progress on remote work (even though it's happening in the other direction), now that businesses have had to figure out how to do these things it'll be hard to take them away again. Especially for people who need accommodation because claiming a remote office isn't "reasonable accommodations" will be really hard to make fly.

Good points, I'm (somewhat) disabled myself and I've been living in near total social isolation since 2017 after having a stroke. Unfortunately the delivery services you mention have been almost impossible to use during the pandemic, there was a priority system in place for clinically vulnerable people but I never managed to get through the red tape involved in getting myself on it, and all the businesses who provided deliveries were chronically understaffed and snowed under with requests. Also think it's worth mentioning that some people can't wear masks for various medical reasons, so not everyone without a mask is an idiot or a fascist. I've not been able to wear one most of the time, but with a combination of caution and social isolation I've got through the last few years without so much as a sniffle.

Like, I GET the science behind the mask mandate lifting. I understand it, and the science is solid. My ONLY reason for concern about mask mandates being lifted as swiftly as we are is that vaccination rates are not particularly high in a lot of the country and 'Vaccinated people can occupy public spaces without masks' basically translates as 'Anyone can occupy public spaces without mask.'
Leaves me in a really awkward position where I know there is near zero benefit to me continuing to mask up in public spaces (which, as one of the few people I know that just got used to breathing in the things really doesn't put me out that much), I still feel the urge to model good behavior and leave wearing a mask a normalized THING. As if seeing me wearing a mask is going to do a damned thing to change the mind of the maskless anti-vaxxer who was probably not masking correctly even when there WAS a mandate.
I can't fix the actual cause of my anxiety (That the mask mandate are being lifted too soon, while we are still Far, far away from herd immunity and bad actors are going to go right back to spreading this thing to everyone they can unchallenged and even unidentified), so I continue to wear a mask any time I'm going farther than my own mailbox to give myself some illusion of control and maybe to tank a little bit of ago for those that NEED to mask up.
It's a slow transition, and I'll change my tune on it once local vaccination rates approach herd immunity levels, but in a red state, lord knows when that might be.
I will be holding onto the masks to wear them when I'm feeling sniffly, though.

Since I'm fully vaccinated I tend not to wear my mask when I'm walking my dog. Frankly people in my neighborhood tend to cross the street when we see each other, so even before I was vaccinated the mask probably wasn't necessary. I do carry a mask, because the people who I see in the street don't know I'm safe, so it's a nice sign that they don't have to worry if we get close to each other.
I also love the fact that for 14 months I didn't get a cold or have the flu. Then after the family was vaccinated, my 3 year old granddaughter played with cousins who go to daycare and BOOM, we all got the cold. So, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to wear a mask indoors for a long time, because being sick is a pain in the neck, and wearing a mask gives me some protection.

If my employer decides to go back to 100% in-office working I will find a new job that will let me work remotely. But for me, 100% or 0% works best so I can keep a regular sleep schedule. I don't want to get up an hour earlier on certain days. That gives me anxiety.
I plan on wearing my mask for a while even though I got my shots. It just gets stuffy after a while (another reason to work remotely). As you pointed out, another thing this plague did was expose the jerks. The people who would call themselves "pro-life" are out there with the "my body my choice" signs. Their view of freedom begins and ends with their convenience and wishes without respect for others. They'll whine about their "right" to put others at risk while taking away the rights of others to vote and have that vote be recognized. They tell BLM to "obey the law" while their orange god broke it almost weekly.
Elitism is thinking you're entitled to better treatment for no valid reason. That's become a defining characteristic of the GQP.

The one thing that has changed me during this pandemic (and the previous 4 years), is that I've dropped all pretext of kindness toward 'right wing conservatives'. At this point I just tell them to 'fuck off', and walk away. I started this practice when a friend I've known since kindergarten was telling me how much he loved Trump and happy that 'GEOTUS' was keeping all the foreigners out, and not collecting MassHealth. At that point a reminded him that his mother was a Polish mail order bride, and that she legitimately suffered a horrific back injury that had left her nearly bed ridden for the last 20 years collecting disability. My local govt is bringing their employees back into the office next month not based on any public health evidence but because they want to celebrate victory by July 4th.
