Most films feature elaborate, methodical plans to seize and take over a high-ranking government building, like Air Force One or Olympus Has Fallen. Trumpists just waltzed in like a sugar-high Lord of the Flies crowd on the playground believing cartoon villain schemes and somehow they were just let go.

Apparently the floor plans were shared with the rioters, we have video of the police straight up opening the gates for them, and we have pictures of rioters carrying ziplock handcuffs into the chambers of congress. Someone had a plan and inside cooperation to take congressmen and the VP hostage in this coup, they just weren’t smart enough to pull it off and those tasked with personal security got their principles out before that could happen.

I've been thinking a variant of this since two years ago. Cheap 1980s movie plots always involved killing or kidnapping the president, right? So I thought of a situation where Donnie gets held for ransom by some nation or terrorist group. Then they get this message: "How much for you to keep him?"

"Terrorist" in the 21st century is a term of art used by the government to strip people of political rights. People who think of themselves as liberals need to stop using it so aggressively. People who have been called terrorists in the last 20 years have been subjected to torture, kidnapping, indefinite imprisonment, and extrajudicial murder by the security state. It's baffling to me that people who supposedly want a more peaceful society are so eager to expand the use of this propaganda term.

We had two incidends in Germany this year, one in which a bunch of right-wing protesters made it to the step of the place where our parliament is seated (where they WERE stopped by the police), and one where our far right party, the AfD (think Republican, but without any real power) invided a bunch of people into the parliament during an important vote, who then verbally attacked our elected officials. THAT was already a disgusting attempt to damage our democracy (and thankfully damaged the standing of the AfD considerably), but in the end, those were mostly silly stunts compared to what happened in the US.

Still, bob at least you understand that it is the case and can see that cynicism can be unhealthy sometimes.

Same - I'm not really one for, say, religious or spiritual significance, but _things mean things,_ and symbolism is a major part of how we communicate as a species. Storming the seat of Democracy for this nation, draped in a US flag (and using them to literally beat down the building's defenders) means something symbolically. Flying the flag of a failed attempt at a traitor state in the halls of the nation that beat them means something.

    Speaking as a Conservative Republican...
What happened yesterday in the Capitol was reprehensible. EVERY single person involved should be ashamed of themselves, and face the full legal ramifications of their actions.

@Michael Prymula I have to answer... does it matter?
Should I be any less upset over a riot in the Capitol, regardless of who I voted for?
I believe that we should be taking a closer look at the allegations of questionable voting, but I sure as hell don't think storming Congress and holding them hostage or trashing the building helps anybody's case.

    • @DarthLocutus0
      @DarthLocutus0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@Michael Prymula I think there's enough evidence that *some* things may have been questionable.
I don't think it's widespread enough to have affected the outcome, but it should still be looked into.

Sure, the Media Is Weird episodes are great and your deep dives into the obscure are a delight, but this was something we needed. You know whats tragic? How numb we are too this at this point.
I'm tired of being angry, and all of this makes me angry!
Violent, irrational thugs being allowed to do this.
    The police response.
The fact that most of these people are going to get away with it.
And also the betrayal~... we trust people in power to not allow this, we give them the power to rule and keep everyone safe and they failed.
Just... be decent. Be good and kind~ and the issue is the majority are! So many people in this world are good but these hooligans take up that stage and just... urgh.

Hi Bob, long-time fan, first-time commenter. No apology necessary. The very fact that you stop to consider whether or not your platform is the right place for your two-cents (/tuppence)-worth about IRL stuff is pretty rare. I'd have a problem if you thought you were entitled to your two-cents-worth _because_ you have a platform. In the spirit of animated conversation, I often want to do some hair-splitting in response to your content but the comments section is invariably a bad place to do that. That's also the case for this offering. In the absence of an opportunity to engage in such animated conversation, then, suffice it to say that daring to _care_ about pop-culture ephemera is the very act that has the potential to tansform it into something lasting. Myths are the narratives we care enough about to perpetuate. In this sense, there can be better and worse myths; true-r or false-r. If there's anything worse than the true-believer it's the true-believer whose faith has been manipulated by cynical opportunists. The maturity of a person, community, society, or culture is measured by the extent to which it can sustain animated conversation about the relative truth and falsehood of any given myth -_especially_ those in which people are most invested- and still maintain relationships, or even cultivate deeper bonds. In this sense, the geek shall inherit the earth. Which is, of course, a metamyth itself.
If my own tuppence-worth is of any value to you, hear me say that _every_ voice has a right -a duty!- to chime in about whatever it _cares_ about. As long as sharing that concern is characterised by the same humility (self-reflection? self-doubt?) you express in this video -and is therefore also characterised by readiness to _listen_ to what others care about- you are contributing to that metamyth. That's using your powers for good.
I, for one, welcome our new geek overlords.

Likewise, you don't need to hold religious reverence for the government to be aware that the seats of these governments and political centers likewise are the places that represent large chunks of fellow humans.
