I definitely had some similar experiences, it took sooo long, months to almost a year for my skin to stop purging and breaking out. I started out with the lowest percentage of 0.025% which did break me out a lot, then I was put on 0.05% too soon and that left deep indentations from acne scarring. I was also using clindamycin phosphate in the morning, along with an antibacterial oral medication for the acne which i think helped push me through. I still have some noticable scarring today, but my skin has finally acclimated to the 0.05% tretinoin. Im happy that im not the only one who had experienced purging for this long and It's definitely a journey that everyone needs to be careful with 😭

I began with .025 cream, and then moved up to .05 gel. I didn't like the slickness of the cream on my skin after application. The gel is perfect for me. It has a moisturizer texture, but it dries quick. I use Cerave Daily Moisturizer Lotion before tretinoin, so I do get it under my eyes a bit since I also have seborrheic dermatitis there. Then after application, I wait about 15 minutes or so, then use Cerave Healing Ointment. I have been on the gel for 2 months, and my skin is clearer (I'm 55, and have adult acne). I have super light peeling in my chin, and under eyes, on the bone area. My under eye circles were light before, but they are a bit lighter now. The Cerave Moisturizer + tretinoin + healing ointment combination, my skin feels thicker, and my under eyes feel firmer.

I have dark skin and live in a tropical climate, the UV is extreme daily, I really was hopeful about starting Tret (Retin A) I started with the lowest concentration and kept at it for an entire year! My skin ending up looking very similar to your photos. I ended up going to my Derm and having some RF micro needling to help with the stubborn dark spots and help restore my completely destroyed skin barrier. About 3 months ago I gave it another shot and boy am I glad I did! My skin looks amazing now!! I know it sounds crazy but I think the culprit was my cleanser, pay attention to your cleanser, you don't want one with harsh actives, stripping, drying or very foamy. I switched to the CeraVe Oil Cleanser and it made such a difference, it even takes off my sweat-proof, tinted, mineral sunscreen easily. I lost the make up wipes and make remover as well, since the CeraVe oill cleanser has been great for gently and thoroughly removing my make up, not having to rub my skin really helped reduce that stinging, sensitivity I had the first time around.
I'm not able to do more than twice a week without getting excessive peeling, so I've settled on just 2 times weekly, a high quality hyaluronic acid (Anteage) and a hydrating moisturizer along with my SPF protection. I also had to axe my vitamin C, which was unfortunate but the results from Retin A far exceeds any results I had with Vitamin C. Wishing everyone a successful skin journey, in sunscreen we trust!!

After my hysterectomy I got adult acne and I started with tazarotene and the black derm that prescribed it gave very little direction. After changing derms and switching to Adapalene and then 4 months later getting to .025 tretinoin. Today 6 years later I am still at .050 as I still have other actives in my routine and have not intention of going higher. Twice a week I use 10% lactic acid at night, Finacea azelaic acid with my Vitamin C and Q10 for daytime. I now use Altreno and keep my generic tretinoin for my neck, backs of my hands and my chest. I've used Retin-A micro (tretinoin microspheres) for over a decade and it has really improved the texture of my skin. Well I had really oily skin and I did have acne before i started using tretnoin. I started using it in April and I used a 0.05% concentration , I usually skipped a day in between, but i did not feel any redness or stinging or any breakouts in the morning, my skin was also not that dry after I washed my face in the morning, it was just normal skin wanting a normal coat of moisturizer. But after 2 months whenever I would skip tretnoin , I experianced some purging , like a pimple on the forehead one day, another on the cheek , at another day maybe another on my chin. So I am not reallyy sure if tretnoin is suiting me or not ?? HELPPP!!! But my acne scars from previous acne have healed , although they are still visible.
