    Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as crazy as you might think. In this video, he tells you five cool facts about leopard geckos.
    Probably the number two animal in the pet world of lizards, after Bearded Dragons, are Leopard Geckos. Leopard Geckos are a terrestrial animal, meaning they live their life on the ground. And you'll find them in the Middle East, from Iran, Afghanistan, those types of areas, mountainous rugged terrain dominated by sand, dominated by very hot temperatures during the day and very cool in the evening. They are, therefore, an animal that's seldom seen during the day. They spend most of their time underneath the ground because of the high heat. They'll come out at dusk. They'll forage for their favorite food, which of course are insects. And they're quite visible at that time of the day.
    I know a lot of military guys that are spending time over in those areas of the world and they tell me about the variety of colors and things they see on the Leopard Geckos in the wild. Primarily, they're spotted like a leopard, but through captive breeding we find them now in all different colors, all different patterns, solid yellow, solid black, striped. You name it, Leopard Geckos are being bred that way.
    Cool facts about them. If you see up close, it's hard, but they have an ear on the side. Of course, one of the things that differentiates lizards from snakes. Snakes don't have any ears, but lizards do, for the most part. And the Leopard Gecko has got a very strange one in that if I put a flashlight on this side and shined it through, I could see right out his ear, through his other ear and out his body into the background. It's transparent. It's a solid ear canal, but I could see right through his head. So it gives him a lot of bad names, like he's an airhead and things of that nature. But that's not really true. It's just the way this animal's ear canals are formed.
    Leopard Geckos shed their skin in patches. The Leopard Gecko kind of has a habit of covering his trail. What he'll do in the wild and in captivity is when he sheds his skin, he makes a meal of it to make it disappear so he can't be tracked. Very simple creature, the Leopard Gecko from the Middle East, Afghanistan, Iran. I guess they're not totally bad places. Checked out this cool lizard.

    Hey guys I got a leapord gecko named Ozzie and I am keeping him in a five gallon until he gets older. I'm not sure how old he is but he is 4.5 inches in leingth. When should I move him up to my 10 gallon? Also what is the ideal amount of crickets I should feed him a day? Thanks!

    • @typaw1262
      @typaw1262 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      When he gets close to 6 inches put him inside the ten gallon, that tank will due for his entire life but if u want to give him more space a 20G long tank is perfect for his entire life also. If it's a male then perhaps a 20G is a better option since males due get larger then females. As a juvenile feed 5 or so crickets depending on their size and wait to see if he eats it all, if he does and continues to look around licking and roaming, toss in a small amount more until U can tell he has lost interest and is full, some geckos can eat a dozen in one feeding just saying. PLEASE remember to feed your gecko at dusk or true night, and always gut load your crickets via fruits or commercial cricket food or both. Don't feed during the day because that's when your gecko is sleeping. Enjoy your gecko they can live up to 15 years even more in rare cases U have years of fun and joy ahead.

    My youngest sister got a baby gecko yesterday. I was worried my other sister's gecko will fight it because it is twice the size but now we can't separate them the bigger one is so protective of it and we only had it for a day.

    • @emopuppy21
      @emopuppy21 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omg NO! You can't have a smaller one with a bigger one, the big one is probably "protecting" him as food

    • @robertq6215
      @robertq6215 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emo Puppy I'm not worried the bigger one is just barley bigger. And the little one has a big attitude he kicked the older one out of his favorite spot one time.

    • @robertq6215
      @robertq6215 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emo Puppy one more thing the older gecko knows not to eat them he has been with smaller geckos more than once so I see your warning thanks for concern really but they're fine.

      +Futureminer Here is all the stuff you need to know. I feed my 15 year old female leopard gecko meal worms mostly. For meal worms you feed them however many they can eat in 15 minutes. With Crickets you feed them however many they can eat in 10 minutes. Wax worms can be given as a treat twice a month. For a tank a 10 gallon tank is comfortable for a leopard gecko. There are specific heating pads for lizard tanks. Get one of those and have one side be heated and the other no heat. Put one hide (ask the pet store employee) on the warm side and one on the cool side. Put a water bowl on the cool side too. I do not recommend getting heat rocks. They tend to overheat. Despite what people will try to tell you they don't need special lights. For substrate I use carpet (special tank carpeting), but you can also use paper towels or newspaper (these will need to be changed a lot). When handling NEVER grab by the tail. When a leopard gecko feels like they are in danger, they are scared, or their tail is grabbed or even touched, their tail may fall off. It will grow back but not as pretty as before. When leopard geckos shed you must help them get any loose shedding off. Most loose shedding will be on the toes. Put your leopard gecko in warm water for five minutes and then try to get the shed off by hand or with a cotton swab. If you do not remove shedding their toes will probably fall off. I recomend getting an adult for your first one. Never put two males together.

      Yes before and after but make sure you dry your hands thoroughly. And dont use hand sanitizer before either cuz the alcohol can get in theyre skin.

      Almost all reptiles carry salmonella, mostly in their fecal matter from their digestive tract, but that doesn't mean they can't step on their own faeces! So it's always best to wash before eating.
      Generally though it's not that common to get it unless you're practically licking your lizard, if that's the case I think you have problems! xD
      ALWAYS avoid the risk though, nearly all reptiles carry it! It's a nasty disease and though rare can be fatal. So absolutely make sure you're little children if you have/know any wash their hands as if their life depends on it! c:

      Purplepoppyanimator Fun fact to add to that; You have as great a risk of getting salmonella from your reptiles as you do from your dog or cat.
      You should 'always' wash you hands before eating or touching your face if you want to avoid that little germ, and even then you'll probably still get it.
