Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as crazy as you might think. In this video, he tells you eight cool facts about crested geckos.
Crested geckos are arboreal lizards, meaning animals that inhabit trees, that are found in the South Pacific. You'll find them in the islands of New Caledonia and surrounding areas. And, amazingly, I've been in the industry for a long, long time, 45 years ago this animal didn't exist.
This was something that we didn't see very often, and certainly not in the pet world. They were very secretive creatures that lived in very sparsely-populated areas of the planet and, therefore, they weren't "known to science". But lo and behold, someone did find them and started to bring them back into the United States to breed, and now they are a popular animal in the pet trade.
They are beautifully adorned with colors that will match their habitat and match their backgrounds. They do not have the ability to change colors, but they do come in a variety of different ones. My favorite parts of them, if you could focus on our big guy here, is that they come with built-in eyelashes. You'll find that snakes do not have any eyelids, but most lizards do. Crested geckos are one of the exceptions to the rule. They do not possess a closeable eyelid.
So, they're constantly staring wide open. Nature gave them a little bit of an eyebrow row right there to protect them, but in order to clean their eyelid, they've developed a fascinating habit. And that is they just stick out their tongue and it extends far enough that they can actually lick their eyeballs. So, that is always a favorite for people to watch when he needs to do it. And it's a very effective way to keep his eyes clean if you don't have an eyelid.
If you see the little baby one I have here, he's complete with a tail, where his daddy here, that's an adult male crested gecko, has lost his tail. And that is another habit of arboreal lizards, in particular, that they drop their tails when any kind of danger comes along. This one is so quick to do that.
You could stare at him for a long time and if you frighten him enough just by looking at him, he will just drop his tail automatically. Unfortunately for him, he does not grow his tail back. It stays a stump for the rest of his life. That's just his problem.
But crested geckos are an amazing creature. They're fruit eaters to a degree. They'll lick the nectar out of flowers, almost bird-like. They'll also eat fruit that's rotting on the forest floor, and they're no strangers to catching an insect that's running on the ground. You'll see them usually in a tree upside down, facing downward, sleeping all day, therefore, a nocturnal predator, with their eyes wide open. Those fantastic eyeballs, those little slits, that always gives you an idea it's a nocturnal creature.
He's looking for anything that's moving on the forest floor and he just flies down and gets it. I say fly because he's got a little bit of a, not a webbed foot, but his toe has got a little bit of a pad to it, that he can just glide down to the forest floor. Little nails all across make it easy for him to climb, and he's perfectly adapted for hunting and living in the trees in the New Caledonian rainforest, which is a very temperate area, not very hot, not very cool.
He doesn't get a lot of sunlight. He just kind of lives in the canopy and he's a very peaceful, easygoing creature. There's a variety of different types these days. The crested gecko from the South Pacific. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

i was laughing out loud thank you for making this comment
Omg I'm crying ahhh so funny
Try not to squeeze it to death
I thought you said try to and I almost got mad
Ha lol me too
+Kellic Quentes haha so did I and I did it haha
+Jim Root what
+Jack Dawson you know what you read
jeeze this guy is a ruff handler!
Was it just me or was he handling them quite rough
yeah
This was 7 years ago, it was probably natural to handle them like that at that time
I have a very healthy male creasted gecko he is 4 years old I got him at 1month and he still has his tail
its quite rare for a Crested to lose its tail actually, it only really occurs if you pick it up by its tail or its hanging onto something with its tail and you pick its up without noticing.
in the wild pretty much all adult Cresties that researches have come across have no tails. It is definitely not a rare occurrence in captive Crested geckos. Some will even drop their tails for no apparent reason at all. Literally just walk away and leave it behind!
I just got 2 babys 1 with a tail and 1 with out...feel bad for the ones with no tails
Wow it's been 2 years but yeah they don't drop it often but that guy is so rough and those geckos are terrified of him
Respect
He has no idea how to handle these geckos, no wonder why the on dropped his tail
Crested geckos are known to drop there tail for many reasons
True but he really is just a joke leave a big fat dislike
True
“The on dropped his tail”
@@NuclearSquidward This comment was made 6 years ago.
I have 3 of these little guys. They are really fun to handle, and very friendly with people.
secondghost I got my first one on Saturday. He's always in the trees and i can't see him lol
I love Cresent geckos nice video but some of that stuff is not true
He feels threatened
against you
I have 1 and her name is Fiona❤️ she's dark orange and is currently crawling on me😂 we currently have 7 pets! 3 cats, one dog, and 3 lizards! I have one in my room and my brother just got two I love pets
He handles them so poorly and roughly and it makes me want to take them off of him -.-
Really thought I can see why the big one dropped his tail~!
Ugh, I know, tell me about it. Well, what do you expect from Howcast, I suppose.
Harry Jackson
he seems to treat tarantulas better
You can tell the gecko is uncomfortable by how wide it opened it's mouth when he grabbed it :/
I thought the thumbnail was a Photoshoped version of the scene from "Lion King" when Rafiki raises baby Simba, but with crested geckos and with long arms lol xD
John Dominguez I can see that haha
That baby one looks like the one I got yesterday for Xmas
epicRMiddleton omg I got a baby crestie for Christmas too last year😭 ! Hope yours is doing just fine 6 years later ☺️
@@kevintuchez440 I had a baby crested gecko for the last xmas too!!!! Hows yours doing?
K6 ohhh nice !! He’s doing great thanks for asking he still has it’s tail which makes me happy 😃 blessings to you and your crestie :)
Same
At the end he's like "DON'T TOUCH ME".
Anyone else like how it feels funny to have them scuttle along your arm with their little pads? They feel soft so it's kinda fun^^
This guy is a joke.
Y
How
This guy says he is a profesional, but no! In every video with this guy he handles the animals so badly! And he need to get his facts straight!!! Cause they do change coulor!
agreed!!
He has more experience than you, so you have no right to question his professionalism. The guy knows the limitations of these lizards and will handle them accordingly. They jump from trees in nature. If they can survive a 50 foot fall, I doubt a little firm handling is gonna hurt them.
Most lizards can "some what" change colors. Meaning, they can brighten and darken, or maybe change their shading slightly, but they cannot "change" color per say like a chameleon.
Yah they shift shades of yellow. Dark to a light whitish. Not to be mistaken as simple color change when shedding (they get pale). I guess he means they don't go from, say, yellow to blue. They just change shades.
CardTricks101 That's pretty much what I mean. They can't change from lets say, tan to green. But they can change to a lighter tan to become more white, or darken to become more brown.
When most people think about color-changing lizards (or just animals in general), chameleons are usually the first things to come to mind. When you compare crested gecko color change to chameleon color change, it's not much; he's probably just stating that they're not exactly gonna be turning into rainbows, so people who don't know as much about reptiles as you won't be confused. Also, those are some pretty expensive terrariums in the background, so I doubt he's one to mistreat reptiles!
made me cringe everytime he kept grabbing the baby one
They change colour called firing up the dont blend with other objects like a chameleon though and they dont use thier claws to climb they use their feet like tree frogs have that suction cup to what ever he wants them too
good video i have decided on one of these instead of a bearded dragon, uses a smaller viv,no special lighting etc,you can kit the viv out with a water dropper etc and seem they happy on a pre made gecko diet and you can make there home look so cool!
Imagine having no eye lids, wow i kinda feel bad for them having to keep their eyes open their entire lives lol
xeztan They use there long tounges to clean there eyes when needed to, no harm done!
1:12 rest in peace baby gecko......
they fire up which means they change color and u handle them badly ur too ruff with them
I'm sorry but shut up
I agree ,y baby hates being handled fast
Ya agreed he is too rough
yoloswag thuglifeselfie No it's not
Yeah it is!
Omg! I just love crested geckos I love them so much!!!!!
People say they can eat fruits but my crested geko turns into idominus rex when he sees crickets
Rocky Gudiel HAHA yeah mine seems to go for crickets instantly when i give them to him
Rocky Gudiel They like crickets but you are supposed to feed them more of the powder mix than crickets. Max for crickets would be around 2-3 times a week
They can't change colors per se but they get darker when stressed and paler when relaxed though
love your vedeos
Great video!
I love these little babies, I have a harlequin(I think.) gecko morph.
lol I love Jungle Bob
My baby crestie is so sweet and half calm and half active hes so cute
Those geckos are terrified of that guy
I’m getting one and it’s great to know this
cool video!
i have had my gecko for like 3-4 months. And i cant handle "it" at all. He/She is very, VERY skittish and freaks out when he/she sees my hand. I have had it on my hand and trying to get he/she to be used to my hand. Im trying! I hope when it gets bigger i can handle he/she more. Any suggestions?
My crestie always poops on me when I get him out lol. Yes, I actually laughed out loud, don't worry.
Nice video! I have a crested gecko too:)
hello I have a question don't know if you know but I noticed my gecko has two different eye colors and I guess he had this for a while is this rare or bad ?
Its called fireing up, They do it mostly at night, or when they are pissed.
This guy must be saving a lot on car insurance
+reptileawesome
Agreed! He's a terrible handler, and my Crestie changed colour a lot, even if it was quite subtle.
Who else has this geko? I do and it's a female and it's so beautiful where going to breed her in about 4 months!
i got a homeboy that breed his and they are very colorful like the mother ivy
can you guys do a flying gecko care vid for me
I'm thinking about getting one for my first lizardn
We have two cresties, mine looks exactly like the small one :)
If you house a few of them together will they make this sound constantly?
Crested geckos are typically not social creatures and shouldn't be housed together. The sound you're hearing is probably (I don't know what sexes you're housing together) either a female protesting a male's breeding attempts or two males fighting. I would highly recommend you buying a 20 gallon terrarium for each adult you own for the safety of your reptiles.
1:24 That gecko's hand/foot looks like a lion's paw.
I'm going. to get one soon
the baby one looks like my baby cresty
Do they all lose there tails? Cause I'm getting one, I get a lot of storms where I am. So, will his tail fall of just of a struck of lightning?
Haylee Pickard it's very probable that it will
He is trying to talk about information while those two geckos are jumping everywhere, and he is trying to keep calm. Most normal people would handle that situation much worse.
They can only be flamed ! , Doesnt mean it can change color. Flamed means they get darker and that most likely means its mad or just annoyed
Gmasked ThaGasGod fired up not flamed lol
*insert annoyed crested gecko noise here*
If somebody was handling me like that I would bite off their fingers
I have never seen my crested gecko eat before and he is 3 years old. I feed him repashy in a bowl and he I guess he only eats it at night. He also won't eat live food.
Raging_Crocodile they are nocturnal creatures dude you won't ever see them eat I've had mine for over 5 years now. And I have never once seen him eat until I put a camera in front of his cage at night. And idk why your cresty won't eat live food, every week I give my cresty 10 great crickets and they're gone by the third day. Lol
they taste very good
I hope that one day I can own my own crested gecko or maybe a bearded dragon
I heard that as "animals that have dreams"
My crested gecko changes his color from a tan to an orange. They do change color lol.
0:27 HEY DONT PICK THEM UP LIKE THAT. DISLIKE
XxTaYloRxX 2006 no
One time i was feeding my crested geico and he jumped up and bit my finger then just hanged their
What expert are you handling a small fragile gecko like that. Also, Im not surprised his 'Daddy' lost his tail; maybe think about the way you pick up a animal so much smaller and more fragile than you next time
My crested gecko changes colors too.
I want one they are
expensive
Breaking news guy squeezes crested Gecko to death in a video trying to teach people about them lol 😂
they will be light during the day and darker at night
Thank you +Pixel Rilex (iPLAY) this helped
His hat though
how did you train the two males to not fight?
I don't think that you can I think it is just in their nature to fight once old enough
They can Change color!! to blend in to the forest
I have 3 of them 1 male 1 femal and one super small babe I love them
The crest on their eys fold over kinda
They do change colour but not the way a chameleon does.
Looks like my gecko 🦎
so i could feed mine fruit? or is he insectivore. and i have a leapord gecko (seperate) and my crickets die in the keeper! why is this?
I'm not sure about leopard geckos, but crested geckos shouldn't be fed crickets regularly, and really don't need them ever. There are specialized food powder mixes for them that have everything you need for a healthy crested gecko 😊 you can also feed them fruits every once and a while for a treat if you'd like.
Ye they do change colour. They fire up.
Are they friendly
Isn't tube big one a little skinny
I'm usually big into snakes but after talkin to a breeder at a show recently I kinda got turned into these guys. Any owner/breeders wanna give me a price range I should expect with these
Depends on the sex, coloration, age, and place from which you make your purchase. Females cost more than males. Some breeders price attractive colors higher than others. And a baby will almost always cost more that a full grown adult. I would expect around $200-$300 for a healthy adult on the low end of the price range. I've seen $400 and even $600 for a really beautiful female.
spoopyboopy So i am a breeder myself and i can tell you that babies almost NEVER cost more than adults. He's right saying it depends on many factors and one of them is age. The reason adults are more than babies is because they can breed. Healthy babies at shows range from about $60-$250 respectively and healthy adults are normally $175-$350+, females being on the higher end. Great and hardy reptiles definitely recommend.
They can change colors
They will change coulors..... Its called fiering
Are these the same as eyelash crested geckos?
Yes, pet stores often call them eyelash geckos or crested geckos.
Do there tails grow back once they fall off
It's rare (almost unseen) for them to grow their tails back, but it has happened. It's never their full tail, but they may grow a little stump type tail that would be longer than the stump of having just dropped it.
Lol the gecko fell down
I'm SOOO excited to get mine YAAAAAY
HIGH FIVE FOR GECKOS! **high fives**
me too! gonnna get a baby gecko! WOOOO HOOOO High five? no? okay *frowns and cries*
**high fives**
=^_^=
They are so cute... Only flaw is they might poop on you
What are different crested gecko morphs
Sarah Alexander pin stripe, dalmatian spot, ect..
Do they sleep
Oh bob... *scoffs*
He's right they don't change color. But I don't like how he handle's them.
Can you have it as a pet
I've talked to jungle Bob…yeah that's right be jealous
Cactus Productions so have I, like it's not that big 😂😂😂.
Ben Saf I know...lol I was being sarcastic
Your way to harsh on the tiny one, they are delicate creatures. :)
......LMAO!!!!! this rough!
oh
My crested gecko doesn't like to eat crickets or that so if anyone could tell me why that could be helpful
They do not need to eat crickets
They eat crested gecko diet and fruits like , banna,Apple, straw berry, and melon
Yea most crested geckos tend not to eat insects for some reason. Just use repashy crested gecko food and you're good to go.
My crested ears crickets lol. I give him 10 crickets every weeks and he'll eat them before the third day. Crickets is their protein. But he does eat crested gecko food made for him for his main diet
The Anonymous BP it's perfectly fine, don't worry your cresties can live without them.
Fly? Nails to climb? Thats fals their feat stick to most things and they dont fly they do jump.
Love the video, been thinking about getting one. Seem like easy going pets that you can actually handle too.
they are very easy to handle just be very gentle but they are not that easy to raise and own. You have to have researched a lot to be able to fully take care of a cresty.
I have a pet one
can you but the baby's with the adult crested geckos ?
Yes, but if the adult is a male and the baby turns put to be another male they must be separated before the baby matures.
Actually no, do not. It's not unusual for adults to eat the babies. It's also common for bullying to occur if one is smaller than the other.
Wooooow
