    Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as crazy as you might think. In this video, he tells you five cool facts about crocodile monitors, also known as monitor lizards and Salvadori's monitor.
    Fascination with reptiles often comes from a fascination with dinosaurs. And there are a few reptiles that really conjure up your imagination when you see them for the first time.
    One of them is the crocodile monitor of Southeast Asia. This is almost a living dinosaur in its appearance. In fact, he's a celebrity lizard of sorts. The movie Jurassic Park, which made dinosaurs famous in the United States, actually used the crocodile monitor's face for some of the scenes because he's got that formidable looking eye that kind of looks right through you. They used him as the Velociraptor in that movie.
    The actual history of crocodile monitors is much more interesting. Not much is known about where these creatures come from. They lived way up in the canopy in Southeast Asia, Borneo and places like that. And not much is known about their habits. No one has ever seen eggs hatch, no one has ever seen them mate. People don't know exactly what they do or how big they can get.
    Natives who live in the area said they get in excess of six meters which would be an 18 foot lizard. My little friend here is about seven or eight feet long at the moment and that's predominantly tail.
    You want to be careful with an animal like this. As far as what I'm doing, I don't recommend the average person do so. This animal has a formidable set of teeth. Triangular serrated teeth that are designed to rip flesh from its victims. Its claws are little razor blades that are digging into my right wrist as we talk. They are slicers. They will disembowel an animal much like the Velociraptor in Jurassic Park. That's how they kill their prey.
    They live entirely in the canopy of the forest and use their incredibly long tail, almost like a fulcrum. To some degree, they can wrap and grab with it. It's not totally prehensile, but it's pretty close. It's also a formidable weapon if an animal would come across one they don't like, they'd whip the tail in its direction and that can cause an animal to lose its eye.
    The crocodile monitor is not something to be reckoned with. I'd certainly not recommend it to anybody as a pet. If it did get 18 feet long, it would be a monster on four feet.
    The croc monitor from Southeast Asia.

    This guy's reptile shop is in Long Island. It's disgusting. Last time I visited his shop, I saw several dead animals in his display enclosures. The husbandry is appalling and he has no right to tell you how to take care of your pets. He's an animal abuser. If you're considering introducing a reptile to your family, please do proper research. Visit forums, reach out to responsible owners. Understand that your decision is a commitment to give said animal a responsible, loving, and engaging life for the duration of that animal's life. This could be decades. This animal, especially in chelonians, can exceed your lifespan.
    Don't listen to this clown.

      Dark Sev. How?

    • @megasupreme9985
      @megasupreme9985 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dark Sev. Definition of birds STRAIGHT FROM WIKIPEDIA. It clearly states that true birds came around in the cretaceous period.
      Birds (Aves) are a group of endothermic vertebrates, characterised by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a lightweight but strong skeleton. Birds live worldwide and range in size from the 5 cm (2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.75 m (9 ft) ostrich. They rank as the class of tetrapods with the most living species, at approximately ten thousand, with more than half of these being passerines, sometimes known as perching birds or, less accurately, as songbirds.
      Fossil records and modern advances in “reverse evolution” genetic engineering[3] indicate that birds are the last surviving dinosaurs, termed avian dinosaurs, having evolved from feathered ancestors within the theropod group of saurischian dinosaurs. True birds first appeared during the Cretaceous period

    • @darksev.6468
      @darksev.6468 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua Lowrie I actually thought that dinosaurs were considered birds, so you could call a T.Rex a bird, but not the other way around; as in you can't call an owl a dinosaur.

    That's a cool looking lizard. Doesn't look like a therapod or or anything but definetly looks very similar to what archosaurs and all the early reptiles maybe would have looked like. Not much change In overall design that's why reptiles are cool they look ancient. Jurassic park did not make very accurate representations on velociraptors though.

    • @Quiestre
      @Quiestre 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tomy Tran then dimetrodons look like dinosaurs, because this lizard here looks closer to that, than a velociraptor, which had feathery plumage on their face.
      Yes they are all reptiles, but so are turtles and crocodiles but they are far away from any dinosaur.

    • @five_pho
      @five_pho 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Lol wow. You're a little slow. This guy in the video was just comparing the appearance of a crocodile monitor to a dinosaur. No one made a claim they had any relations BUT looking like one. How hard is that to understand? You keep repeating yourself saying monitors aren't dinosaurs. Everyone knows that.

    • @Quiestre
      @Quiestre 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tomy Tran "Everyone knows that. "
      well that's not true. i know a lot of people who don't know that.
      And the fact that he mentioned that Monitor Lizards have been used in Jurassic Park as Raptors means that those people also didn't know that so well, since we now know that Raptors had feathers, also in their face. So they don't look that much alike.

    • @five_pho

    So, I stopped watching pretty early when he talked about Monitor lizards starring in Jurassic Park. There were no live animals used to portray the dinosaurs in that, or any other Jurassic film. There were many animals used for reference, including lizards like this, but for the closeups of the Velociraptors, the filmmakers used detailed puppets and actors in suits - never live reptiles.

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually crocodile monitors are quite a handful. I wouldn't reccomend them to anyone but experts. They are among the most aggresive monitor lizards and have the largest teeth in proportion to their skull of any lizard. They also have anticoagulants in their saliva. That means even a bite from a tiny crocodile monitor will bleed ALOT and likely require stitches. I absolutely would NOT reccomend these to anyone without lots of experience with other monitor lizards. They are not your every day lizard and they can do more damage than virtually any other lizard available to the public. I'd rather be bitten by a small alligator than a crocodile monitor of equal size and that's no exaggeration.

      I've had a Savannah monitor for many years. Got him as a tiny hatchling. Goes everywhere with me if possible. He's been my absolute best friend. Of course he is much smaller at only 5 feet long. He is the exception to the majority rule. Have been bitten just once when I hand fed him some smaller than usual shrimp. Mistook my fingers for shrimp. He let go immediately. He even naps with me and comes to my bed burrowing under the covers on his own.

    Longest tree crocodile monitor in the Guinness Book of World Records grew to 15 ft 7 in Long I'm thinking since the tail was so long more than double the length of its head and length I'm thinking for a tree crocodile monitor 15 feet 7 inches long what have no more than a anywhere from 4 ft 7 in head and body ahead and vent length and 11-foot tail. Or a 5-foot body and a 10 foot 7 inch tail

    Not many croc monitors in captivity, nevermind as pets. This one looks tame so props for that. You should see their teeth ! They look like shark teeth. Wonder if the croc was with him as a hatchling? Musta been.

      All dinosaurs are birds? Here's an argentinosaurus, the largest bird to exist.

  • @johnbiever4204
    @johnbiever4204 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If it DID get 20 feet long, that would make it the world's second largest lizard to ever exist, second only to Megalania, the giant prehistoric Komodo Dragon of Australia. Also, most of the thin branches in the canopy would crash to the ground. Plus, what would feed something so big in the canopies? Parrots? It would be so cumbersome. I doubt the locals have it right, but whatever. If they are, I'd love to see a real monitor lizard so damn big with my own eyes.

      The thing is that occasionally a small group of these monitors will scavenge or hunt very large deer or buffalo. They'll attract all the surrounding population of monitors and that leads to competition, which is the basis of natural selection. There is a reason these creatures evolved to be so enormous, and following in their ancestors' footprints they will continue to get larger.

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are very thin compared to most monitors though. Even with all their length they don't weigh much. They so have some of the largest teeth of any monitor though. Proportionally their teeth are the longest hands down. Check-out pictures of crocodile monitor skulls on google. Those teeth in proportion to their skull size would make even the T-rex jealous.

    I hear Croc Monitors the reason being why they have such a long tail is that when threatened they aim for the eyes, much like a spitting cobra.
