    Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as complicated as you might think. In this video, he shares five tips about caring for a tokay gecko.
    We see Tokay Geckos in almost every type of pet store in America. And there's only reason for that and that is their low cost. Because really this is more of a specialty animal. I see them very often for $19.99 or, "Buy the tank and we'll throw the gecko in for free". And I would say 99 percent of the times that people succumb to that come-on, it ends up bad for the owner or for the gecko.
    These animals are absolutely beautiful and in a tank they will sit on the back of the glass because of their sticky feet and sticky hands. So you can see them readily. They do make a noise. I was trying to get him to do that. I think he did it a couple of times. They make a call. They do that Tokay kind of a call. So you can hear them at night, which is very, very pleasant to hear.
    However, they're also known by people in the know as the pit bull of all lizards, if not the pit bull of geckos for sure. This animal has a tremendous jaw strength for its size and extremely sharp teeth. So the uneducated may go to a pet store and say, "Wow, I got this whole tank setup and I got a free gecko with it. I think I did well." And the first time they try to reach in and take him out of the tank, this animal will latch onto their finger and quickly he's being brought back to the pet store, because no one told him that they have a ferocious bite. They bite. They bite hard. They got tremendous jaw muscles and I call them the pit bull of geckos, because they don't let go. So you don't want really to be bitten by a Tokay.
    It is not a beginner animal, even though it's priced as such. It is really more of an advanced hobbyist animal, who can appreciate the beauty of it. It certainly is a beautiful creature, from the front to the back. There's all kinds of wonderful patterns. And now they're being bred in captivity and the color patterns are changing, which happens quite often in captivity. Recessive genes meet recessive genes and different color patterns pop up out of the Tokay. So, a beautiful animal.
    In my store here, we always let a few of them go in the store. We put them on cricket patrol. They're fantastic insect eaters. They come out at night. They got those big, beautiful eyes and they could see in the dark, and they'll hunt down any cricket that may escape in the store and be free. So we got one giant Tokay Gecko that lives in the back room. He's over a foot long and when my employees encounter him, they steer clear because he's got a ferocious bite. The Tokay Gecko, not for the uninformed, that's for sure.

    I live in Japan and there are many house geckos here, much smaller than the Tokay .
    House geckos are called "yamori" in Japanese which translates to house protector, and it is said that they will bring you good luck if you be nice to them.
    I usually let them roam around my house. A couple of them intruded from my veranda, and they have done a great job getting rid of nasty bugs. The first time I saw one it was about an inch, now they have grown to about 5 inches. They are such adorable creatures.

      We have some over in Florida as well. They’re roughly the same size but can be up to 6-8 inches. They are also very friendly, I’ve been able to walk up to a couple and they will just crawl on your hand, willingly. When they get scared, they occasionally squeak and have been known to brawl with the other lizards around the house. They try to stand up tall on their little legs and act like some sort of shield like lizard and charge at their enemy. They’re amusing little creatures.

      I remember when I stayed in Mindanao for a month... My first night I crashed out from long flights and no sleep, and I awoke from a Tokay calling, but I had no clue what it was, I was looking around and it was dark and he was very loud and I was nervous haha, my mind pictured a bird lol (but at night? Lol) Now I own 2 here at home and I keep them in a tank because it's a dry high desert in northern Nevada so hardly humid. I think she believed that they predicted the weather because they can sense a change in barometric pressure (sudden change in weather and rain) and that's when they like to mate, in the rain so it's makes sense because they'll call during that time.

    It's true that pits are just like any other dog (raise them right and they'll be simply great dogs), however they do have larger than average temporalis muscles which control the jaw, which is where they get some of their bad rep from (when brought up horribly)

    • @TheAnimalGuyTV
      @TheAnimalGuyTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you 100%! Pits are only aggressive because the owners make them that way. If you love and are nice to your Pit they are one of the most loyal dogs you can get! But yeah, a bite from them is NO joke! But that doesn't make them bad animals, they only bite because they feel they are threatened or scared.

    Im thai and we can found these little lizard at night around and inside our house. They bite hard and they bite often if you wanna touch or catch them, they're a small great predator of the house, it eat almost all kind of insects so if you wanna pet it, I prefer you prefer it with care, and also why thai called it Tokay? easily, thats because they sound 'Tokay! tokay!' during night.

    oh man i had one of them and let me tell you they are very soft. just like any animal if you put the time into them they turn out to be a great pet. my tokay Riply cause her back was so riply lol i had let all 3 of my kids hold her when they were babys. she was the best pet! i had her for 9 years. i found her in the tank on her side still alive so i picked her up and she died a few min later with me holding her. this is not a starter pet. they do bite hard. and the way to get them to let go is to put a blanket over their bodys and head. even though my girl was and old bird befor she died she would still bite me(not hard) when i had her out to long. or was playing with her to much. i even got her to do "tricks" like sitting on her back with legs in the air, and i could get her to bite softly. and she would always let go right after.(only after she was tame) i miss Riply. she was a good pet.

    Tokay gecko are native in the Philippines and there is one in our house which I discovered recently and they are not welcome because they are known to bite when you accidentally cornered them like when you open the door they jump on you and bite and won't let go. I want to get rid of them but when I hit them with a broom they just hide behind anything only to come out later on. Their bark reminds me about their presence which make me uncomfortable. They don't look beautiful to me, they look ugly.

    Also not mentioned, but some of these geckos, especially *captive bred* more than anything, can possible be tamed out and become gentle pets. They're also somewhat intelligent for a gecko, or so I've heard.

    tokay's are my favorite lizard and we have had a few over the decades, my wife wanted me to get another as she missed hearing them call at night but the one i ordered online is female instead of the male i ordered but o well. she is very testy about me cleaning her cage and comes out of her hide and attacks my hand when i remove and replace her water bowl, it is very funny as she will charge at my hand and bite at it while repeatedly making a loud ' GACK!!!' sound.

    I live in the Philippines and I always see that in my house. We call it "Tuko" because of its sound. Most people are afraid/killing it because they say that if it you get it startled, it will jump onto you and it will stick in your skin (which can not be removed even if killed)
    Please tell me if it's true. I dont want people killing them!

      That Tokay looks to be in perfect health. Not sure where you get MBD from....

    • @shinkinotenki
      @shinkinotenki 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the shriveling of the snout. May be a birth defect of some kind or I might just be seeing things, but I have had imports with mbd develop that shriveled, downturned nose when the disease progressed past a certain point.

      shinkinotenki when they bite down hard, it causes their faces to scrunch up. That's what you're seeing. Healthy tokay, regrown tail.

    • @cheriepope9989
      @cheriepope9989 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      get one from a breeder since a lot of petstore ones are wild caught. some people can tame them and some people have no luck doing so. If they bite you and have a hold on you, you may have to run the gecko under some water to make it let go.
