      Not all Petco's exercise improper husbandry, just the same as not all mom and pop shops have the best husbandry. But if yours does, then by all means play this for their management!

    • @believeinshadows139
      @believeinshadows139 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stefania's Exotical Adventures your probably right. Tho from personal experience every petco ive walked into has like 10-15 stunted skinny geckoes with stuck shed sitting in sand. Same for dragons. It’s not hard to put them on echo earth or carpet and split up there numbers to some of the empty tanks they almost always have.

    • @macawlover8251
      @macawlover8251 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      update: so I went to Petco with my chrome book, and stood by the leopard geckos in front of the calci sand (which is by the leos *cough cough* for some reason *cough cough* ) and played this on loop loud, but not too loud as to disturb the dying geckos people, reptile owners I'm guessing, stopped, looked at me, and started slow clapping, I also brought along post its and put a small one over the lable for the calci sand so it said Death Sand, it took about 30 mins to get kicked out, but I feel like my actions did something, I'm going to another Petco soon to do the same thing

    Great video, love the graphics and animation. My leopard gecko is at least 26 years old now, she was adult size when I bought her back in 1992. I wish I'd had this kind of care guide back then, the only book I found at the time said sand was the ideal substrate and it was normal and healthy for them to eat sand.

      @leopardgeckotalk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      wow! great age! Yeah to be fair even back in 2003-2006 when i started researching leos, looking back the books had such terrible info in, I was so glad to get talking to local breeders who told me 'do not use sand!' :')

    My currently unsexed and unnamed baby makes me so happy! I love watching it hunt and explore. Whenever I go in to clean or fill water it's right there wanting to know what's happening.
    My adult, Jasper, is totally different. He won't eat in front of anyone, has no desire to check out the noises he hears or anything, and just keeps to himself.
    I'm still very new to keeping geckos so I often feel lost. I haven't tried handling the adult because he's so skittish and I'm afraid of spooking him, but this video gives me confidence in knowing I seem to be doing everything right. Thank you so much for your content!

    I wanted to ask, since leos aren't fully nocturnal or diurnal, is it absolutely imperative for them to have UVB lighting?

    • @lydiaeddins2083
      @lydiaeddins2083 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They don't need it, as long as you give them d3 vitamin powder with every third meal. But they will have brighter colors if kept with a uvb light. I don't keep uvb with my leos, and I notice that their colors will shift when I handle them in a will lit room verses just hanging out in their mostly dark tanks.

    • @floundrrpoundrr2456
      @floundrrpoundrr2456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @lydiaeddins2083
      @lydiaeddins2083 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@floundrrpoundrr2456 Your welcome! Be sure to look into the different strengths of UVB if you go with a combo light (leos can burn easy). Also, they will need less D3 in their diet to not get a vitamin overdose. But I haven't researched the specifics on those. Leopard Gecko has videos on it.

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lydia Eddins UVB is beneficial but not completely necessary. Don’t use both artificial d3 and UVB. Be sure to use a tube light. Arcadia and zoo med are good brands. Don’t use it with geckos with red eyes. Keep in mind that screen lids block 50% of the UVB, 5% UVB is good

    Hello to anyone reading this, I have a question.
    I am currently planning on getting a new leopard gecko, specifically a baby. I just had a question about the baby geckos setup. I already have a 20 gallon long tank ready for the little guy when he’s big enough, but I’ve been researching and haven’t found anywhere that says if I should or shouldn’t go ahead and put him in the 20 gallon. I’m worried because if it’s really small, it could get lost in such a space and not get the proper heating. I was wondering what an ideal baby gecko setup would look like and if it would be okay in the 20 gallon. Please and thank you in advance!

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use reptisafe to treat water. Or spring water, or tap water left out for 24 hours. I’ve heard that in some places in the UK there’s no chlorine in the water. Crickets are a good staple diet but it’s ideal to vary their diet. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings

    so i've been doing a lot of research on getting a leopard gecko and each website I see all say different things. Whether that be substrates, hides, calcium bowls/sand, lamp temps, whatever.
    Can you tell me, in your opinion, the best substrate and kind of food?
    i've got the main idea for what i need but it's confusing when everything says something different. thank you !

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Substrate: paper towel for the first six weeks for quarantine and under six months. Dry eco earth, organic top soil, a bioactive substrate, or something similar over six months.
      Diet: live insects only. It’s best to vary their diet. Feed mainly Dubia roaches, crickets, and/or locusts. For variety you can use mealworms, superworms, silkworms, and Phoenix worms. For treats waxworms and hornworms. Dust with calcium powder every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings. Gutload the insects with carrot, potato, and apple.

      My guess would be that it wouldn’t count as a cool hide because some rocks can transfer heat? It sounds like a neat idea just for having another hide but I think putting the cool hide on the opposite end of the tank is better.

    I thought it was kinda weird that when flooring was mentioned for the geckos, reptile carpet was never brought up. For a while I used sand, but one of them got an infection, and we assumed he was getting wet in his water bowl, then that made sand stick to him when he got out, this caused an infection, so we switched to reptile carpet.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carpet is not a suitable substrate. It’s unnatural, harbours bacteria, tends to get caught on their teeth and claws, and doesn’t offer any digging enrichment whatsoever. A suitable loose substrate is best. Good options include zoo med’s reptisoil, a mix that’s 60% top/potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude.

(1) How do you make sure you don't get a gecko with Enigma Syndrome? Are some morphs safer than others? (2) The research about feeder insects can be confusing. I have tried switching around the hides (to see if it was the hide he preferred), food and water location, etc. Is this normal? you're meant to spray down the earthmix arid every now and again, but i'll admit i am terrible with doing it, it feels so unnatural to spray down my leos tank haha, but i do spray their humid hide or areas of the tank when they're about to shed. If its full bio active with a clean up crew, it probably doesn't need changing often.
