  • It's a fairly common problem with older tractors - a weeping PTO shaft oil seal. The good news is that it's also really easy to deal with. Our sponsors: www.anglo-agriparts.com can provide you with the parts you'll need.
On the Ferguson TED20 (and other TE series) you drain the oil, remove the four bolts holding the outer casing and the whole shaft assembly slides out. Watch this video for a detailed demonstration on how to replace both the seal and the bearing. P.s if you're replacing the seal, it is advisable to change the bearing as well. Often the seal leak is an indicator that the bearing has some slight slop in it, thus causing the seal to leak.

Hello Gordon, good demonstration of overhauling the PTO shaft. I used a heat gun to warm the bearing and it dropped onto the shaft with very little effort. Getting the new bushing onto the shaft was a bear because the interference fit was extremely tight. Unfortunately, I do not have a lathe and could not open the inside of bushing a wee bit to reduce the interference fit. AND, I might have damaged the seal because it is weeping oil. When the weather improves I will have a looksee at the seal lip. It may be possible to nudge it back into place. If not, no worries because its $14 to pickup another seal. Life is a journey of trial and error. TTFN/CDC

Hi Charles, it is easy to damage the lip of the seal. As you say this one is thankfully easy enough to replace and relatively cheap too. 👍😉

Thank you! So many tractors we look at would benefit from having the seal (and bearing) replaced and it’s not a difficult job to do. 😀

Hello Gordon. Another top notch video and explanation. I live in the USA (Ohio) and am enjoying this playlist immensely. I was wondering if you would tell me where you are in England, or what town or city is near you? If you would rather not for privacy concerns, I completely understand.
