    Child's Play Movie Description:
Gunned down by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), dying murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky -- which Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) then buys for her young son, Andy (Alex Vincent). When Chucky kills Andy's baby sitter, the boy realizes the doll is alive and tries to warn people, but he's institutionalized. Now Karen must convince the detective of the murderous doll's intentions, before Andy becomes Chucky's next victim.
Child's Play is a 1988 American slasher film directed by Tom Holland, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Don Mancini and John Lafia, and based on a story by Mancini. It is the first film in the Child's Play series and the first installment to feature the character Chucky. It stars Catherine Hicks and Chris Sarandon with Brad Dourif as Chucky. Its plot follows a widowed mother who gives a doll to her son, unaware that the doll is possessed by the soul of a serial killer.
Child's Play was released in the United States on November 9, 1988, by MGM/UA Communications Co. It grossed more than $44 million against a production budget of $9 million.
Along with the film gaining a cult following, the box office success spawned a media franchise that includes a series of seven sequels (one of them being a television series), merchandise, comic books, a reboot film of the same name released in June 2019. Child's Play was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, although the rights to the series were sold to Universal Pictures in 1990, beginning with the sequel Child's Play 2. MGM retained the rights to the first film and, as such, distributed the 2019 reboot.

    Trivias-
1.Don Mancini was inspired of the story Child's Play with the Cabbage Patch Kids Craze of the 1980's. He thought it would be good to write a satire about the marketing done to drive kids mad for these dolls.
2.Chucky's full name was a combination of three well known murderers. Charles Lee Ray. It was created from Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray.
3.The man playing Dr Ardmore is Jack Colvin, maybe one of the best underrated actors from the 70s ,he was known for playing Mr Mcgee in The Incredible Hulk who always chased Banner/Hulk in a few episodes, his role in Child's Play was his last performance he ever made since he retired. He died in 2005.

    • @Thundarr100

      4. One of the inspirations for Chucky was a real life haunted doll named Robert. Allegedly, whoever owned the Robert doll would become victim to several strange accidents. The Robert doll is currently on display in a glass case in a museum in Key West, Florida. Apparently, people are warned to not take Robert’s picture without asking the doll for permission first. Those who disregard the warning and take the photo of Robert without asking permission will suffer from tragic accidents.

The kid who played Andy actually still does in the TV show. While he was recast for 3 and didn't show up for two movies, the original child actor returns to play Andy in any adult appearances. Aside from that, he also does a lot of behind the scenes work for other shows and movies, mostly sound design and editing.

Of course, then they went out one night and it was on HBO... and I watched it happily. I LOVED IT... yes, it was scary, but as we all know that's the point.
I still love the series to this day... IMO the only low-lights are Bride and Seed, but I've even come around on them more over the years...

Soon to be turning 35 years old on November 9th, this year.
Way back when studios were trying to make that next, new horror character.
Child's Play was one of the most creative concepts of the era.
Mixing the supernatural with mystery and suspense while still keeping the slasher feel.
Brad Dourif in his performances as Chucky, from human to doll and through every installment has been incredible.
I liked the first film and the 3 sequels that followed.
After those, i was done with watching the franchise.
It got a little too convoluted with the multiple continunities.
Parts 2-4, 6 and 7 were from Universal Pictures.
Of course, The Universal Monsters' legacy is a whole other success.
But in the time that the franchise was with the studio, Chucky was made an honorary Universal monster.
Fright Night (1985) is another classic by writer/director Tom Holland.
His debut as an filmmaker and a fan-favorite vampire movie, prior to Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys (1987).

Dude, I had a life-size doll. My older brother rigged it to move, then had me watch the movie, and because I wanted to be cool, I watched it with him. Being under 10, I was trying to show him I could handle it. Well, when it was over, he said I should probably go to bed since it was late. As I was walking down the dark hallway to my room, he pulled the sting he had attached to my doll, and it fell out of my bedroom door. Man, I have never ran so fast before, back to the couch, and would not go back to sleep until my mom got home later that evening. He got grounded for like a month, and I didn't want to see or know where that doll went ever again.

My parents liked going to Spencer’s even though they knew I hate that doll, but they couldn’t just leave outside of the store so my dad’s idea to help me face my fear was to tell me to go up to the doll and just poke it in the head just show me it’s just a doll, but that didn’t do anything for me.
That is until I got older and I started to learn more about Chucky I started get less and less scared of him. It was through understanding who the character of Chucky was, was how I got over my fear of him.

I got into this franchise recently absolutely love it. And I have a feeling based on your love for Evil Dead that you'll love this franchise as well. The first two films TRY to stay in that horror realm, but to me kinda fail at it. Hard to be scared of a doll unless the movie version of Annabelle. But that has more to do with the fact it's a porcelain doll rather than the doll itself. But Child's Play 3, and and the two films after it lean into camp and comedy, sometimes going full comedy. Then Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky go back to the horror roots, though Cult has a bit more of the campy comedy, while Curse is (in my opinion) the scariest of the films. And then there's the show, which is balls to the walls insane. And insanely funny, too.

The chucky franchise gets campy after the 3rd movie and plays more into comedy. the last 2 movies go back to their more horror/serious route. the show takes place after the last movies and is actually pretty fun and enjoyable.

I remember being about 6 when I the trailers for this on TV, when it was about to come to theaters. I was terrified of jist the trailers, so I couldn't take this movie, whenever I'd come across it by accident, flipping channels once it showed up on cable. When number 2 came out, I finally toughened up and forced myself to watch it. Mainly because the protagonist was a little boy the same age as me. These movies were my gateway into horror. Nightmares were definitely had, but seriously love this series. Specifically the first four movies. Great reaction!

The tv series is great, but you need to get through all the films first, as it is a direct continuation from the last one. This series does a great job building lore and continuity. I recommend watching them all!

To answer your question, $100 in 1988 (which is when the movie takes place) would cost $257 today. If you react to all these movies, watch the "Chucky" series, especially since they bring Andy back and explains how things lead up to the first movie.
some Trivia: Andy's actor, Alex Vincent, didn't want to curse during the film so he intentionally "forgot" his lines while filming.

there's a guy that went to the filming locations for this in chicago (video on youtube) and all the places are still standing except for the house with the rats. Believe it or not, all the buildings were really close to each other, except Andy's house. I've always been in love with the building they lived in, it's an actual building and the interior is the same. So you know the apartment was real too as opposed to a set. Its crazy how Karen is shooting into the 7th floor apartment and all this noise yet no one hears it LMAO. But seriously, that apartment was huge, looks like it takes half a floor. I could of sworn it was a 1 floor house.

Funny you should mention Smeagol, considering that Brad Dourif played a *different* Lord of the Rings character (the evil advisor in Rohan)
And scariest moment had to be the head-turn immediately after she sees Chucky has no batteries.

I was so scared of dolls as a kid because of Chucky. My great grandmother had a room FULL of porcelain dolls. Like 30+ in a tiny room.
Well, she gifted one to my Mom. My Mom then thought it was fun to lock me in the closet with it.
    I was horrified.
But now I love Chucky and am not scared of dolls so it's all good.

honestly, horror movies made back then are so much better than the ones made now thanks to the practical effects. Like, yea it may look a little silly at times, but most horror movies now use CGI and honestly, the CGI just makes it look even faker in my opinion. to me, it always looks like real people inside a video game😭and thanks to the low definition in older movies, it makes it much scarier cuz not everything is crystal clear like how it is in high def. i kinda wish that horror movies today would sometimes use the lower definition

Chucky had supernatural strength from the vudu god damballa which is why he's hard to fight with. If you decide to watch the sequels watch all the movies first before watching the tv show because it's connected to the movies. I think you done well reacting to this movie provided on how you thought how it would effect you. And just a heads up his kills do get more creative and bloody. The show in my opinion is even more shockingly bloody than the movies!

I loved chucky as a kid! My favourite franchise since I was three yrs old till late teens, now it's the hellraiser franchise, love me some cenobites.😂 chucky still gives me nostalgia and I still do enjoy the franchise.
Remember when we had dvds and there was a menu page? Well my younger sister would start balling her eyes out when she heard the chucky menu page music😂 pretty sure I traumatised lil sis.
